@@TokyoBlue587Well, probably less awkward than Tyler saying your problem is getting F'd in the A. That would really make my jaw drop! 'Well then, he DOES take after Eminem while rapping.'
I think at risk of feeling dumb being more blunt with its lyrics for me is better than if it were some complex masterpiece. The message is very important and something I think the way they conveyed it was great and the right way to do so to get the message across
Same. A lot of us, including myself, struggle with social anxiety, which can stop us from checking in on our friends. The song serves as an important reminder for people like me on how important it is even to just say hi.
@@Real_aquatic definitely! this concept isnt really something you'd want to hide behind layers of symbolism and metaphors, since the goal of the song was to encourage us to do something.
I always interpreted Midwest Indigo as describing depression. It's a sadness that is deeper than "having the blues", and a color deeper than blue is indigo. He is describing difficulties that living in the Midwest brings, such as frost on windshields or counselors canceling. In my experience, doctors, therapists, and other medical specialists are very busy because it's not like big metropolises where there are dozens of options in every field, so if you are, for example, late to an appointment, they might cancel on you and not let you have your appointment in order to accommodate the dozens of other tightly scheduled appointments. He has a sadness that is deeper than Midwest Blues, thus Midwest Indigo.
From the moment I heard the line "it's a different blue, it's deeper than it's been" I directly thought about the expression "feeling blue". So for me, Tyler is clearly portraying a very deep down and sad time in his life, head, state of mind.
Oldies station is just too good lyrically. It's about getting older and more mature but I also think it could be an ode to his late grandma mentioned in navigating. Tyler reflects on how he learned from his elders on how to prioritize what matters in new seasons.
Yeah, Tyler said in the livestream that this song is kind of an update for the fans on how he's doing. So he's describing in third person the struggles and breakthroughs he's had since we last heard from him. In that context, the line "You've got it down, that old fight for survival" makes me feel very proud of him. Also "you're in the crowd at her first dance recital" talking about his daughter is just adorable 🥰.
@@shannyn7404 yes it means both it is layered. "Your favorite song was on the Oldies Station." Reefer to someone who has passed away . I think his grandma or whoever was at her dance recital before she passed away, despite the difficulty and doing things at a very old age. This is speculation I think it is a nice personal touch to this song
I can't help but wonder if the Vignette line is a call back to Heavydirtysoul. "Its a tribute to zombies, of which I've become. Where do I go from here!?" "Mindless zombies walking around with a limp and a hunch, saying stuff like 'you only live once'." Feels like maybe he's recognizing that he's allowed himself to become a mindless zombie and he wants to get freed from that way of thinking/living.
After reading your comments, I need to delete my video and re-upload with a different ranking... jk jk! But where my "Midwest Indigo" people at? There are too few in the comments!!! People are making some really good points here though.
I am a Midwest Indigo people!! It's definitely the one I find myself singing the most and the first one I latched onto after the singles. MI, Next Semester, and Snap Back are the ones that I think are going to have real staying power with me.
at the first listen through it was kinda last. but the more i listen to it. its def top 5, " I requested counsel with the counselor and he cancelled twice" just hits different.
I really like this from genius: "In the midwest, the subject of the song, winters are particularly dreary. To say the “cloud coverage matched [the narrator’s] outfit” draws a similarity between his clothing and the weather. The “cloud coverage” is dark and gloomy, and so he is dressed similarly: dark and gloomy. “To a knife” is similar to a more commonly used phrase, “to a T” which describes two things nearly identical. The word “knife” may be used as opposed to the more common idiom to add a darker edge to the line, which would circle back well to the reference of “cloud coverage”.
You should NOT be nervous at all. We all get SUPER excited to see you come back to post any of these videos for us on the UA-cam channel that was our “go-to” for so so many great years.(at least for myself❤) Your opinion is valued, I promise you
It was perfect as always. I love Midwest indigo as well. For me a big theme here is the blue, and I can't help but compare it to feeling blue in the sense of depression perhaps. "it's deeper than it's been" - he's feeling more down/blue than usual
Wild that I think vignette is in the top 3 songs TOP has ever made and he placed last WILD lol but just shows how much they have to offer to so many different people in different ways
My #1 is Routines in the Night. Love how it flows so smoothly in the chorus, love Tyler’s falsetto in the background at end & awesome video. Navigating a close 2nd for how hard the drums & bass go ❤💛
for me i feel like midwest indigo is kind of an internal sort of debate or let’s say conversation between the depression and the mania, which are both the poles of the same issue. listening to this song is kinda like getting a glimpse of what’s going on inside a bipolar person’s head, and i find it very cool.
I've always taken the line in Midwest Indigo 'It's a different blue, its deeper than it's been" to mean, that his 'depression' (or something like it) has grown worse. Blue is often used as the colour of depression or mental health struggles.
ATROFD being that far down is almost criminal. It’s such an important song for anyone to hear at least once in their life, or at least read the lyrics.
The lyrics are a good message but I feel like the ‘flow’ is kind of awkward. The ‘drop drop drop’ reminds me ‘bounce bounce bounce’ from Bounce man (my least fav on SAI 🤷🏻♀️) JMO
My list would be 13. lavish (Tho the MV is one of my favorites they've done 😂) 12. The Craving (Jennas Version) 11. Oldies Station 10. Snap Back 9. Overcompensate 8. Next Semester 7. Vignette 6. Backslide 5. Midwest Indigo 4. Routines in the Night 3. Paladin Strait 2. At The Risk of Feeling Dumb 1. Navigating This list changes pretty often lol
Clancy Ranking 1. Overcompensate (10/10) 2. Paladin Strait (10/10) 3. At The Risk of Feeling Dumb (10/10) 4. Vignette (10/10) 5. Routines In The Night (10/10) 6. Next Semester (9.5/10) 7. Navigating (9.5/10) 8. Lavish (9/10) 9. Snap Back (9/10) 10. Backslide (9/10) 11. Midwest Indigo (9/10) 12. Oldies Station (8/10) 13. The Craving (Jenna’s Version) (7/10) 14. The Craving - single version (6.5/10)
I don't agree with a single thing in this ranking but i enjoyed it nonetheless and I'm just glad you didn't put Snap Back straight at the bottom like everyone else. For me it's #2, that song is a masterpiece.
Lyrically it’s an amazing song that I feel like I relate to and have a deep connection to. But as a song itself it’s kinda hard for me to enjoy it musically without getting in the feels. I think oldies station is a good balance of having a touching message without getting too sad
@@reedharrington6954 i guess i can kind of get that, and yeah, Oldies Station is that #1 above Snap Back. But at least for me personally, it's that "getting in the feels", deeply emotional thing I love most about Snap Back. That's the whole reason I listen to music at all and I'm always happy to get into a sad feel so that doesn't bother me.
@@jeebock2061 yea that’s totally justified. I think most people have their reasons for when to play their favorite songs. For me it would just be rly hard to get my friend into the band by showing them snap back first but I personally love the song
I KNEW VIGNETTE WOULD BE UR LAST PLACE!! U mentioned u dont like HeavyDirtySoul cause the word zombie takes u out of the song and that was the first thing i thought of when i listened to vignette for the first time
I love how everytime I watch one of your videos my vocabulary expands, I never come here and leave without becoming a more inspired and knowledgable person.
Paladin Strait is my #1. The lyrics are some of the most beautiful lyrics I have ever heard. I think about my family and friends who I love being on the other end of the shoreline.
Oldies Station is so beautiful. That lyric “you’re in the crowd at her first dance recital, push on through” just killed me for days. Tears as a parent. That definitely has to be my favorite. But i love ATROFD also. Routines definitely my least. I didn’t really think of midwest indigo in that way. It was definitely a filler song for me in the album. But i can’t wait to listen to it again with your comments in mind.
“I see your problem is your proctologist got both hands on your shoulders while you’re bottomless” is saying that someone is so full of shit that even a proctologist wouldn’t get near that. And I think that’s actually an AWESOME line and hilarious way of putting that. We all know that Tyler is against swearing in music, as it’s a cop out to not have to fully explain how you feel. He is using metaphors to say something is full of shit. I always interpreted it as the music industry.
13. Lavish 12. At the Risk of Feeling Dumb 11. The Craving 10. Backslide 9. Snap Back 8. Overcompensate 7. Oldies Station 6. Vignette 5. Next Semester 4. Paladin Strait 3. Midwest Indigo 2. Navigating 1. Routines in the Night I honestly love all the songs on this album. It kind of hurt seeing at the risk of feeling dumb so low. Also always like hearing your perspective!
Honestly, I think all the songs are so good that any list is valid. Even if I don't agree with it personally. A lot of it comes down to personal preference and taste in music.
1. Oldies Station 2. Snap Back 3. Vignette 4. Routines In The Night 5. Backslide 6. Overcompensate 7. At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb 8. Navigating 9. Paladin Strait 10. Midwest Indigo 11. The Craving (Jenna's Version) 12. Lavish 13. Next Semester Even though certain songs are lower, i love every song on the album except Next Semester.
1. Midvest Indigo 2. At the Risk of feeling dumb 3. Oldies Station 4. Routines of the Night 5. Vignette 6. Lavish 7. Navigating 8. Next Semester 9. Backslide 10. The Craving (single version) 11. Snap Back 12. Overcompensate 13. Paladin Strait
I have to love routines in the night because I have an infant that still wakes up multiple times each night and this song plays in my head while I sit up with her.
ATROFD feels like such a definitive TØP song. Has the contrast of fun upbeat bop mixed with some of the heaviest rock they've ever done. Musically diverse and lyrically significant. I love the whole album but really feel that song is such a perfect representation of the band as a whole. And sometimes lyrics just NEED to be direct, and this is very much that.
Although I don't agree with a lot of your list, I definitely agree about the top 2. Next Semester is just a great song and tells a great story and Midwest Indigo is definitely one of the most poetic songs they've put out in a while and just also gives off a ton of Vessel vibes (Which is still my favorite Twenty One Pilots album)
been watching since jumpsuit dropped (then went back and watched just about every tøp video you've uploaded LOL) and the minute i heard "it's a tribute to zombies of which i've become" i immediately thought "oh boy clifford's not gonna like that one"
Great to see you back! I remember your video "7 worst top songs" and I got salty because you had March to the Sea on there lol. I just watched your "All twenty one pilots songs explained in under 6 minutes by an english teacher" though and thought you summarized them perfectly. Since you recently explained in your first clancy video that you really appreciated the religous themes of their early albums (vessel, rab, self titled) and less into the lore (which I am in a similar boat), I'd be curious to hear of you miss the lack of that in their later albums? While I understand you don't want Tyler to be preachy like in songs like Clear, do you wish Tyler talked more about his faith in Clancy? While I appreciate the addiction theme, I wish he'd lean into the positivity of his faith a bit more. The most religious song on clancy seems to be "Backslide" imo, where the line "I use to be a champion of a world you can't see" can be interpreted as referencing the lore as well as his earlier albums that addressed his faith a little more directly. Overall, I appreciate the non-preachy direction he has always taken, but I would love a little more boldness when it comes to what he really thinks/believes these days
Vignette was my lowest too until about 3 days ago when I was learning the verses to song along, now its in my top 3! You said the lyrics are so vague and youre not sure what its saying, but I relate to it way more than any other song. Not tryna right an essay here so I wont get into what I think it means, but I think it describes some of my life and my feelings perfectly, and ive never heard those themes in a song before
That line in Lavish is uncomfortable, but I actually think it's a clever way to describe the way the music industry can screw musicians over. It's a strong visual without being blatantly obscene. It's walking a fine line where it gets the point across, but if I play it in front of my kids, it will go over their heads.
I really don’t think the line about the proctologist is saying “get screwed.” I can’t see how it would mean that. A proctologist is supposed to help diagnose and promote health, but in this case, it’s being used completely inappropriately. He says “I see what your problem is” which I think means he’s pointing out how a lot of people living that lavished lifestyle don’t get confronted with their problems, instead they’re able to take advantage of each situation, and pretty commonly, have very broken and inappropriate sexual relationships
Vignette is right near the top for me, and Midwest Indigo is definitely my least favorite. Just goes to show that all TØP songs are great but just appeal to different people 🙂
Midwest Indigo, routines in the night, and navigating are my top 3. I would not be able to rank them tho. They all have so different moods and serve different purposes.
my personal opinion: #1 Navigating - One of their most relatable songs. I find that being lost in your head and not concentrating on what’s around you just really hits close to home, for me at least. And it’s just so freaking catchy. The fact that Tyler was considering cutting it is just insane to me. 11/10 #2 Next Semester - Man, the lyrical content in this is just 🤌. I’m also a huge rock nerd, so when I heard this really got me excited (same with Navigating). 10/10 #3 Paladin Strait - I was a bit dissapointed when I first heard it because of how it dosent really fit with the other outro tracks (Truce, Goner, Leave The City, and Redecorate), but it just keeps growing on me with every listen. It has an amazing atmosphere and the bridge is phenomenal. 10/10 #4 Overcompensate - WELCOME BACK TO TRENCH! I feel like it would be #7 or #8 if it weren’t for that intro. 9.7/10 #5 Oldies Station - The message of the song is so uplifinting, and the sound literally takes me to space. It’s like The Hype of this album. 9.5/10 #6 At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb - Again, so catchy. And the message, while it is obvious, it is very inspiring. And the post-chorus is nothing short of a gift from God in my book. 9.3/10 #7 Routines In The Night - It’s not super interesting, BUT, as someone who struggles with regularly, it does relate. 8.8/10 #8 The Craving (Jenna’s Version) - Wow, okay. I was not expecting to cry this hard to a love song. It is a bit more raw than the single version, but it does have so much emotional weight to it. Definitely deserves more love. 8.6/10 #9 Backslide - I feel like a lot of people are gonna hate me for this, and honestly, when it came out it was even lower. I do think it hits really close to home, and it’s such a vibe, I just think the vocals in the chorus are very over-the-top. Still way more interesting than the songs below it. 8.4/10 #10 Midwest Indigo - It’s nothing crazy sonically or lyrically, but issa bop. 8.3/10 #11 Vignette - I was obsessed with this is when it dropped. I do still love it, it just shrunk on me. 8/10 #12 The Craving (Single Version) - This is the version I listen to (for obvious reasons), I just it lacks the emotion that Jenna’s version had. Still great. 7.7/10 #13 Snap Back - I have complicated feelings about this one. The lyrics hit and it’s very relatable, but the vocals in the chorus just don’t do it for me. Also, the vibe that it gives just isn’t exactly for me. 7.2/10 #14 Lavish - It’s just so weird. I do like it and vibe with it every once in awhile, it’s just impossible to relate to it. Also, the line about being “bottomless” just really threw me off. Love the music video, though. 6.9/10 THERE ARE NO BAD SONGS ON THE ALBUM! Every song has good value to it and I will be binge-watching every Clancy World Tour video I can find.
It’s insane since the bottom two were my bottom two for like months, although JUST recently vignette did grow on me, so overcompensate is last. I didn’t get the hype for the former for awhile since it’s a huge fan favorite. Overcompensate specifically I feel like doesn’t have a lot going for it lyrically and sounds a bit too different from the rest of the album. My top 3 is Backslide, Snap Back, and Oldies Station
I remember your video discussing top songs from years ago where you said you hated the word "zombie" in songs. As soon as i heard it in vignette, i was sad knowing you wouldnt like it 😂
Man, you put all my favorite songs at the bottom lol. Vignette and ATROFD are absolute bangers and Oldies Stations is such a beautiful song, but I respect your opinion P.S. Vignette 13th???
Tiers in no particular order S TIER: Paladin Strait Overcompensate A TIER: Next Semester Vignette At the Risk of Feeling Dumb Navigating B TIER: Routines in the Night Midwest Indigo Backslide Lavish The Craving (SV) C TIER: Oldies Station The Craving (JV) Snap Back
Same haha I gravitated towards that one instantly. Reminded me of some of their older stuff, the production and structure is so dynamic and interesting and I've always liked Tyler's high notes. Also appreciate the lyrics tacklin topics of addiction. The song is just a banger idc
If you flipped the numbers I love your list 😂 I like the points you bring up though and happy to agree to disagree. Curious if your fandom of TOP has dwindled over the past couple albums. Seems like you’re more excited to have the storyline over so you can see what music looks like without the lore (which I think is totally fine 😊)
I don't really wanna go to college, so i unfortunately don't need to check out the other channel, however im sure you are doing great things there instead ❤
Vignette, Routines in the Night and ATROFD are all in my top 5. Which to me shows how TØP make a little something for everyone. You and I probably have very different taste in music. What I like most about TØP is the way they fuse a dark hip-hop style with an alternative funky indie style, so songs with that present in them speak to me.
lol my list is almost fully different 13 Snap Back - 4/10 12 Lavish - 5/10 11 Navigating - 5/10 10 Overcompensate - 5.5/10 9 Backslide - 7/10 8 The Craving - 7.5/10 7 Oldies Station - 8/10 6 Routines in the Night - 8.5/10 5 Paladin Strait - 9/10 4 Midwest Indigo - 9/10 3 At the Risk - 9.5/10 2 Next Semester - 10/10 1 Vignette - 10/10
A little surprised at the ranking but that's okay, everyone has a personal preference. Imo I'd rank the songs like this: 13. The Craving (no offence) 12. Lavish (lofi version of lane boy?) 11. Oldies Station 10. Paladin Strait 9. Navigating 8. Routines in the Night (best song for insomnia) 7. Overcompensate 6. Backslide 5. Midwest Indigo 4. At the Risk of Feeling Dumb 3. Snap Back 2. Next Semester 1. Vignette (hits different with every listen)
Its pretty funny that The Professor's bottom two are also Tyler's bottom too (If his livestream comments are to be believed), he just needs Snap Back higher and he'll be completely on Tyler's wavelength lol Edit: I'm going to the take the Ohio comment personally LOL. 😂 As a native Ohioan, Ohio is definitely not boring. Frankly, the fact that people go out of their way to rag on Ohio proves it is more memorable than places like...Indiana. When was the last time someone thought to make fun of Indiana? (Sorry neighbors) Tyler is wise to stay in Columbus, and Josh decided to move back from California. Columbus is a pretty good city, one of the few Ohio cities to grow in population and economy, has 10+ colleges and universities, holds the national headquarters of multiple companies, and most of all, the people are nice and respectful as a whole. It's not a flashy city and is certainly not utopia, but is a good place to live and to raise a family especially.
For me it's: #13: Snap Back (6/10) #12: Oldie's Station (6.8/10) #11: Lavish (7.2/10) #10: Midwest Indigo (8/10) #9: The Craving (8.3/10) #8: Paladin Strait (8.4/10) #7: Backslide (8.8/10) #6: Vignette (8.8/10) #5: At the Risk of Feeling Dumb (9/10) #4: Navigating (9/10) #3: Overcompensate (9/10) #2: Next Semester (9.3/10) #1: Routines in the Night (9.6/10)
My take on the proctologist line in Lavish is, Much like the music video, it's a call back to the days they were doinbg Vine. It matches the level of sass from their old Vines
My top (with songs sharing spots) is this: 01. Vignette and At the risk of feeling dumb 02. Overcompensate and Routines In The Night 03. The Craving (Single Version) 04. Lavish 05. Next Semester 06. Midwest Indigo 07. Paladin Strait 08. Oldies Station 09. Navigating 10. Snap Back 11. Backslide 12. The Craving (Jenna's Version) It's funny my first four are your least four hahah
Jenna's version is a beatiful song, don't get me wrong. Possibly it gets me more emotional than what Snap Back and Backslide "hype" me, but I think the song order is quite bad. The way it is originally makes me want to skip Jenna's version every time, I swear. I've heard different fan made order playlists and they all make more sense than the original, it's crazy
I'm going to rank including both "The Craving"s: 14. The Craving (Jenna's Version) | 81 | This is a great song as well, but after hearing the single version first, the simplicity of this song is just too simple for me. 13. Snap Back | 85 | I love every song on this album. This ranking is incredibly different because I feel like Tyler and Josh (and Paul) did a great job at making every song different. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for how slow-paced this song feels. 12. Backslide | 86 | This ranks above Snap Back simply from the "I don't mind if it's lonely, I don't mind if it's fair" refrain that's so dang catchy. 11. Lavish | 88 | So freaking catchy. Fun song. I love the satirical bite. Just not as emotionally satisfying as the next 9. 10. At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb | 89 | Yes, the clown instrument part makes sense as a complaint. The last minute or so of this song makes up for a lot of it. I also felt like this was the most blatant callback to Blurryface in terms of sound, because it has a little bit of that Reggae feel. 9. Vignette | 90 | The falsetto takes a little bit to get used to, and it sounds like Bittersweet Symphony in the beginning. 8. Routines In The Night | 93 | Just a banger. So much fun in the car. The rest of the songs just have such an emotional punch that set them above. 7. Overcompensate | 94 | I remember when this came out and it was ALL WE HAD from Clancy. How much I had this on repeat. That intro that lasts forever. That awesome transition from into the main section of the song. Just an awesome piece of songwriting. 6. The Craving (Single Version) | 96 | The extra instrumentation and the 'mmmhmmm mmmmhmms' seem to fit the themes and lyrics of this song so well. I just feel like the way that this version of the song is structured is so much better than Jenna's version and they should have just left this on the album as the only one, in my opinion. I understand the rawness of Jenna's version being an appeal, but the single version just fits the lyrical progression so much better. 5. Midwest Indigo | 97 | I agree with everything he explains in this video on why it's great. The lyricism is just so strong, and I love the way we go from being anxious to relaxed in just a few minutes. 4. Navigating | 98 | Just a perfect pop/rock song. Josh on the drums in between the verses and chorus make you fly into the sky. 3. Next Semester | 99 | Everything about this song is so great. So hopeful. So much about second chances and trying again despite your failures. The chorus is just so easy to sing along to that you can't help but believe it! 2. Oldies Station | 99.99999999 | Push on through. This freaking song. This song is LIFE in a song. The way the beat moves as if you're just going through the motions and then turns into going through the RIGHT motions. The more I hear this song, the more it makes me appreciate everything in life. I believe that the ending of this song is all the way to being someone who is elderly, and what it's like to live a life trusting God and being someone who has virtually no anxiety as a result. 1. Paladin Strait | 100 | This song is just so perfect. I can't believe how much I connect to this song because it's so much about believing in something despite whatever looks difficult in front of you. In this case, I believe Tyler means God on the other shoreline, and no matter how rough the waters in your life ahead look, God is always with you and knows that you can make it through. Just such a work of art. So much emotion and the culmination of the ending tracks of the last few albums. Especially Goner and Leave The City.
And also, Overcompensate is literally pure LORE and is as it is supposed to be. Invested TØP fans understand as it should be. That said, I can understand why people outside the Clique will see it differently.
Lavish is genuinely the only TØP song I hate. Which is frustrating because, excluding Lavish, Clancy is a contender for my favorite TØP album. The proctologist line really took me off guard, grossed me out, and completely soured my experience listening to the album for the first time. Even more frustrating is that I haven't seen ANYONE else agree with me about this, so it makes me feel like I'm crazy or something. (But if I'm being honest, sexual innuendo has always been something that ruins music for me. That's why I can't get into a lot of rap/hip-hop stuff.)
Hey Cliff! Just wanted to say thanks for your videos! Always a pleasure to see an upload. Ive been following your channel since Trench and have been rewatching them to help with my own twenty one pilots analysis videos. Wish you all the best. ✌🏽|-/
#13: Lavish Love the proctoligist line and the music video. The genre of music isn't one that would appeal to Tøp fans, but is something that a non-tøp fan could stumble across and enjoy. Glad it's on the album even if it's not my taste in music and wish it got a better reception. #12: Routines in the Night (sorry Josh) Beautiful imagery and a good melody. Feels predictable and perhaps lacks variety in the melody. The type of music you could play with friends. #11: At the Risk of Feeling Dumb I love that it's direct and to the point. A message that ought to be said directly and to the point. Everything from the verse to the chorus also sounds great. On another day I could put this at #5 and honestly I'm surprised I've kept it so low. #10: Next Semester Feels so repetitive. The melody is phenomenal but I feel it's let down by the lack of variety in the lyrics. I was never able to get into it and feel that this could've been the song that would go on to become a hit but didn't. Glad it's well received by the fans though. #9: Backslide When it first released I'd said that this would be my favourite song on the album. While I don't listen to it as much any more I appreciate the lyrics and is definitely something worth listening to when you're down. A bit of positivity is shown in the music video (shifting the cycle) but another song that feels like it has less hope when compared to previous Tøp songs (for ex the way guns for hands, not today or lovely promise a way out (each in their own way)) {again this may just be me} #8: Oldies Station Stressed out talked about the fear of getting older. In oldies station we deal with the consequences of it (growing older) and what it entails (ex losing close friends). Your eyes adjust to the darkness as you push on though. Surprisingly (imo) lacks positivity or hope for a tøp song. #7: Navigating If Migrane was describing the emotions you feel, Navigating would highlight the effects of these emotions. Catchy tune and sounds phenomenonal. I love the use of time like in Midwest Indigo. If any song were to break beyond the fan base it should be this. #6: The Craving Both versions offer a different sound that what is seen on other Clancy songs. Raw and genuine. The single version can also be a nice reminder of how hard it is to please fans and deal with your emotions when a song isn't perceived well. #5: Vignette I like the concept of being swallowed by a vignette. Another song that can be interpreted either in a lore way or as is (addiction). Catchy musically. May drop down as I listen to it more. #4: Overcompensate The reimagined version of bandito symblolizing how it's time to tear apart this world is nice. Personally don't relate much to the lyrics but the song is musically satisfying and the ideal opening track. #3: Midwest Indigo For every reason you stated. #2: Paladin Strait A song that can be interpreted differently depending on whether or not you care for the lore for ex. the hurling storm and angry waves could represent how difficult and can be to gain courage to face our demons and fight for control (lore) or represent our emotional turbulence (no lore). Very lyrically rich, relatable and calming. Love that it emphasises the importance of relationships. #1: Snap Back Imagery and lyrics that reach out. Relatable themes
Uff. If I hadn't seen that bottom 3 I would've said it's a solid top 5. It's def one I haven't seen. Not that originality counts for sth as it's your personal top but I just liked to point it out. I for sure disagree with the bottom 3. I love Vignette musically. Routines for me it's one of the most straight forward songs on the album: a full on introspective banger. And then Overcompensate is just fun. I get that it may be a little wild musically, and even Vignette as well but idk I like em. Speciallly the 1st 2 cause they're in my top 5. But yk what else is on there? Navigating and Next Semester. So I can't hate on your list. I do agree that Navigating just slaps and the music compliments the lyrics very well, even though there's not much going on there. I knew you were gonna have Next Semester high knowing what seemed to be your prefference when it came to the album tracks. I love this song. It's such an anthem. I wasn't really into the bridge at 1st as it sounded a bit generic but I now I see it as the climax of the song. The lyrics do hit hard. Love the punk vibes, it gave me a lot of nostalgia as in that mid-2000's alternative like The Killers and early Arctic Monkeys. My fav out the entire album. I could see already that you'd gravitate towards The Craving. It's not my fav from the ones he dedicated to Jenna (Tear In My Heart) but it for sure is the best one at getting the sentiment across. Her version is more intimate and that's why I preffer it but the single one is on that level, too. Idk which one you preffer. And it's the 1st time I see someone putting Midwest Indigo 1st on their list. I do like it though. It barely misses my top 5 but I'm not even sure how it's totally shaped. I just have my top 3 locked in and I see 2 in your top 5 and 1 at the bottom 3. 2/3 it's a W in my books. Great video. Glad to see you back and analysing the lyrics from Clancy. I do feel as well that it's a return to form for the band and I'm not mad at all for them not being super lore heavy on here, even if Trench is my fav album, cause that's why I fell in love with them in the 1st place. Takes me back to the Vessel era with that thought in mind, but keeping that wildness of Trench in the musical standpoint. Love the album and the video
Midwest Indigo is my favourite song too! I agree and disagree with all your rankings. This album is too tight to be able to definitively rank the songs one way or the other. Initially I didn't like Next Semester, but it makes so much sense now in the context of the album as a whole, this is a no skip album for me.
Next Semester and Midwest Indigo are two of my absolute favorites, too. As a Midwesterner myself, Midwest Indigo hits me right in the heartstrings; I love how the color of a dreary winter sky is equated to feeling "blue", and the cold winter temperatures compared to coldness in a relationship that's gone sour. Next Semester gets me choked up with how powerful the message is, of reaching absolute rock bottom, but deciding to keep fighting anyway. And they're both absolute bangers to boot! Navigating would probably be in my top 3, as well, as I can feel the bass and drums, as well as the thought that "Everybody leaves" deep in my soul. Wanting the people you love to stay so badly, but ending up pushing them away as you get lost in the tide of your struggles. The whole album is an absolute masterpiece, but let's be real: TOP never misses!
Vignette being the last is a crime.
Real
Yes
Eh im ok with it. Imo its kinda overrated. I mean i like it but its not in my top 5
Under overcompensate?? This dude is fried
Real
I came in like "i cant wait to hear how much he liked vignette". The second i saw it at 13, i visually went 🙀
The line in lavish about a proctologist is a bit of an innuendo for getting screwed over
Yep, you're "getting fucked from behind" is how I interpreted it. It's a bit of an Eminem style wordplay
Still a very awkward line, though
Reminds me of Simple Plan's "Welcome to My Life" which is easily the reason "At the Risk of Feeling Dumb" is my favorite song from the album.
"Your favorite song was on the Oldies Station."
Reefer to someone who has passed away .
Where do I go from here!?" "Mindless zombies walking around with a limp and a hunch, saying stuff like 'you only live once'."
Feels like maybe he's recognizing that he's allowed himself to become a mindless zombie and he wants to get freed from that way of thinking/living.
After reading your comments, I need to delete my video and re-upload with a different ranking... jk jk! But where my "Midwest Indigo" people at? There are too few in the comments!!! People are making some really good points here though.
I’m a Midwest Indigo Stan for sure. Not my #1 on Clancy, but it’s up there for sure
I love Midwest Indigo, one of my favorites
Midwest Indigo is #1 for me, but I also really like Navigating and At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb. Where are you moving to in the Midwest? I'm from Iowa.
"match my outfit to a knife" is he saying he wants to look sharp?
Good thinking
This is genius...
@@ThePopSongProfessor lol
I really like this from genius:
"In the midwest, the subject of the song, winters are particularly dreary.
@@TomRenti i like this too!
I'm always nervous to check comments after a video like this. 😬😬😬
You should NOT be nervous at all. We all get SUPER excited to see you come back to post any of these videos for us on the UA-cam channel that was our “go-to” for so so many great years.(at least for myself❤)
Your opinion is valued, I promise you
It was perfect as always.
Same!!! The drums are simply too good in this song for it to be in last place
My #1 is Routines in the Night. Love how it flows so smoothly in the chorus, love Tyler’s falsetto in the background at end & awesome video. Navigating a close 2nd for how hard the drums & bass go ❤💛
for me i feel like midwest indigo is kind of an internal sort of debate or let’s say conversation between the depression and the mania, which are both the poles of the same issue. listening to this song is kinda like getting a glimpse of what’s going on inside a bipolar person’s head, and i find it very cool.
damn, vignette amd overcompensate are some of my fav songs of all tøp...
Sorry. I'll re-upload with those at top. ;)
@@ThePopSongProfessor yayyy😭
I've always taken the line in Midwest Indigo 'It's a different blue, its deeper than it's been" to mean, that his 'depression' (or something like it) has grown worse. Blue is often used as the colour of depression or mental health struggles.
Tyler said Vignette is about addiction - may help out with that one!
Have Midwest Indigo at #1 too!
ATROFD being that far down is almost criminal. It’s such an important song for anyone to hear at least once in their life, or at least read the lyrics.
Right? But some songs you gotta hear twice...
The lyrics are a good message but I feel like the ‘flow’ is kind of awkward. The ‘drop drop drop’ reminds me ‘bounce bounce bounce’ from Bounce man (my least fav on SAI 🤷🏻♀️) JMO
My list would be
13. lavish (Tho the MV is one of my favorites they've done 😂)
12. The Craving (Jennas Version)
11. Oldies Station
10. Snap Back
9. Overcompensate
8. Next Semester

Mine is super similar, I just move Next Semester and backslide before routines in the night
You’re list for me is pretty much spot on, I would swap vignette with paladin strait
When i heard zombie in Vignette i immediately wondered what you would think of it...definitely found out lol
I'm too predictable...
SAME HONESTLY THE LINE REMINDED ME OF YOU😂😂😂 and then i came to see if you uploaded anything since your hiatus
Midwest Indigo "deepest blue deeper than it's been" to me means he's struggling more than ever (bluer than he's been before)
Question: do you have a seizure every time you hear the song “zombie” by the cranberries because of… a sertain word

Vignette is my favourite off of the album, and like, the keytar solo is insane. It goes really well to me.
I KNEW VIGNETTE WOULD BE UR LAST PLACE!! U mentioned u dont like HeavyDirtySoul cause the word zombie takes u out of the song and that was the first thing i thought of when i listened to vignette for the first time
Haha, my reputation precedes me.
I love how everytime I watch one of your videos my vocabulary expands, I never come here and leave without becoming a more inspired and knowledgable person.
Wow, thank you!
Paladin Strait is my #1. The lyrics are some of the most beautiful lyrics I have ever heard. I think about my family and friends who I love being on the other end of the shoreline.
15:23 "My second favorite album on this song" lol

I have to love routines in the night because I have an infant that still wakes up multiple times each night and this song plays in my head while I sit up with her.
i'm trying really hard to be like, oh it's all subjective, don't take it too seriously, but VIGNETTE?!? LAST!?!?? 😭😭😭
Vignette, overcompensate, routines, AND at the risk are at the bottom??? This guy cooked and gave us food poisoning 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔊🔊🔊🔊‼️‼️‼️
Switch routines in the night with Midwest indigo and switch vignette with lavish
solid ranking mr professor! haven't watched you since the old days when you talked about the old top stuff
I really think that Tyler is singing to Blurryface in Paladin Strait
Also wanted to ask, since you're the one who introduced me to him, do u get Des Rocs vibes from Navigating? Especially the bridge towards the end.
Are you still doing the No Phun Intended because I wanna know what Hear Me Now actually means
top 3 is valid, the rest? turn it upside down and that’s my my ranking hahaha. funny how music can be so polarizing
I see what you did there
@@PyroFish2612 HAHAHA no phun intended 😜
Routines is a banger idc
Vignette was my lowest too until about 3 days ago when I was learning the verses to song along, now its in my top 3! You said the lyrics are so vague and youre not sure what its saying, but I relate to it way more than any other song. Not tryna right an essay here so I wont get into what I think it means, but I think it describes some of my life and my feelings perfectly, and ive never heard those themes in a song before
That line in Lavish is uncomfortable, but I actually think it's a clever way to describe the way the music industry can screw musicians over. It's a strong visual without being blatantly obscene. It's walking a fine line where it gets the point across, but if I play it in front of my kids, it will go over their heads.
bros least favourite 3 are the best 3
Dude, I'm seriously not equipped to make these decisions. haha I just follow my heart...
@@ThePopSongProfessoryour heart led you astray lmao
My first comment when I heard vignette was "pop song prof is not going to like the zombie reference" 😂
Overcompensate is my favorite from the album 😢
In the song "midwest indigo" where he says" its a different blue its deeper than its been" blue means sadness not colour blue as you interpreted.
Vignette is right near the top for me, and Midwest Indigo is definitely my least favorite. Just goes to show that all TØP songs are great but just appeal to different people 🙂
15:22 "My second favorite album on this song"
My brain is very small. lol
The legend is back!!! also my top three is probably RITN and Snapback and Paladin Strait
Every like this comment gets I will take one breath
Eh
Overcompensate is definitely an opening song, after all they did play it the beginning of the Kids Choice Awards…
Midwest Indigo, routines in the night, and navigating are my top 3. I would not be able to rank them tho. They all have so different moods and serve different purposes.
my personal opinion:
#1 Navigating - One of their most relatable songs. I find that being lost in your head and not concentrating on what’s around you just really hits close to home, for me at least. And it’s just so freaking catchy. The fact that Tyler was considering cutting it is just insane to me. 11/10
#2 Next Semester - Man, the lyrical content in this is just 🤌. I’m also a huge rock nerd, so when I heard this really got me excited (same with Navigating). 10/10
#3 Paladin Strait - I was a bit dissapointed when I first heard it because of how it dosent really fit with the other outro tracks (Truce, Goner, Leave The City, and Redecorate), but it just keeps growing on me with every listen. It has an amazing atmosphere and the bridge is phenomenal. 10/10
#4 Overcompensate - WELCOME BACK TO TRENCH! I feel like it would be #7 or #8 if it weren’t for that intro. 9.7/10
#5 Oldies Station - The message of the song is so uplifinting, and the sound literally takes me to space. It’s like The Hype of this album. 9.5/10
#6 At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb - Again, so catchy. And the message, while it is obvious, it is very inspiring. And the post-chorus is nothing short of a gift from God in my book. 9.3/10
#7 Routines In The Night - It’s not super interesting, BUT, as someone who struggles with regularly, it does relate. 8.8/10
#8 The Craving (Jenna’s Version) - Wow, okay. I was not expecting to cry this hard to a love song. It is a bit more raw than the single version, but it does have so much emotional weight to it. Definitely deserves more love. 8.6/10
#9 Backslide - I feel like a lot of people are gonna hate me for this, and honestly, when it came out it was even lower. I do think it hits really close to home, and it’s such a vibe, I just think the vocals in the chorus are very over-the-top. Still way more interesting than the songs below it. 8.4/10
#10 Midwest Indigo - It’s nothing crazy sonically or lyrically, but issa bop. 8.3/10
#11 Vignette - I was obsessed with this is when it dropped. I do still love it, it just shrunk on me. 8/10
#12 The Craving (Single Version) - This is the version I listen to (for obvious reasons), I just it lacks the emotion that Jenna’s version had. Still great. 7.7/10
#13 Snap Back - I have complicated feelings about this one. The lyrics hit and it’s very relatable, but the vocals in the chorus just don’t do it for me. Also, the vibe that it gives just isn’t exactly for me. 7.2/10
#14 Lavish - It’s just so weird. I do like it and vibe with it every once in awhile, it’s just impossible to relate to it. Also, the line about being “bottomless” just really threw me off. Love the music video, though. 6.9/10
THERE ARE NO BAD SONGS ON THE ALBUM! Every song has good value to it and I will be binge-watching every Clancy World Tour video I can find.
I haven`t listened to the album yet but it`s still interesting to hear your thoughts about it :) :)
You just referenced relient k?! Dude I literally thought the same thing when I heard Midwest indigo!

Its pretty funny that The Professor's bottom two are also Tyler's bottom too (If his livestream comments are to be believed), he just needs Snap Back higher and he'll be completely on Tyler's wavelength lol
Edit: I'm going to the take the Ohio comment personally LOL. 😂 As a native Ohioan, Ohio is definitely not boring. Frankly, the fact that people go out of their way to rag on Ohio proves it is more memorable than places like...Indiana. When was the last time someone thought to make fun of Indiana? (Sorry neighbors)
Tyler is wise to stay in Columbus, and Josh decided to move back from California.

#12: Oldie's Station (6.8/10)
#11: Lavish (7.2/10)
#10: Midwest Indigo (8/10)
#9: The Craving (8.3/10)
#8: Paladin Strait (8.4/10)
#7: Backslide (8.8/10)
#6: Vignette (8.8/10)
#5: At the Risk of Feeling Dumb (9/10)
#4: Navigating (9/10)
#3: Overcompensate (9/10)
#2: Next Semester (9.3/10)
#1: Routines in the Night (9.6/10)
We are very different people. haha!
My take on the proctologist line in Lavish is, Much like the music video, it's a call back to the days they were doinbg Vine. It matches the level of sass from their old Vines
My top (with songs sharing spots) is this:
01. Vignette and At the risk of feeling dumb
02. Overcompensate and Routines In The Night
03. The Craving (Single Version)
04. Lavish
05. Next Semester
06. Midwest Indigo
07. Paladin Strait
08. Oldies Station
09. Navigating
10. Snap Back
11. Backslide
12. The Craving (Jenna's Version)
It's funny my first four are your least four hahah
Jenna's version is a beatiful song, don't get me wrong. Possibly it gets me more emotional than what Snap Back and Backslide "hype" me, but I think the song order is quite bad. The way it is originally makes me want to skip Jenna's version every time, I swear. I've heard different fan made order playlists and they all make more sense than the original, it's crazy
Also even though I loved Overcompensate at first, I kinda like it less and less with time
I'm going to rank including both "The Craving"s:
Vignette is one of my top 3 for sure
#13: Lavish
Love the proctoligist line and the music video. The genre of music isn't one that would appeal to Tøp fans, but is something that a non-tøp fan could stumble across and enjoy. Glad it's on the album even if it's not my taste in music and wish it got a better reception.
#12: Routines in the Night (sorry Josh)
Beautiful imagery and a good melody. Feels predictable and perhaps lacks variety in the melody. The type of music you could play with friends.
#11: At the Risk of Feeling Dumb
I love that it's direct and to the point. A message that ought to be said directly and to the point. Everything from the verse to the chorus also sounds great. On another day I could put this at #5 and honestly I'm surprised I've kept it so low.
#10: Next Semester
Feels so repetitive. The melody is phenomenal but I feel it's let down by the lack of variety in the lyrics. I was never able to get into it and feel that this could've been the song that would go on to become a hit but didn't. Glad it's well received by the fans though.
#9: Backslide
When it first released I'd said that this would be my favourite song on the album. While I don't listen to it as much any more I appreciate the lyrics and is definitely something worth listening to when you're down. A bit of positivity is shown in the music video (shifting the cycle) but another song that feels like it has less hope when compared to previous Tøp songs (for ex the way guns for hands, not today or lovely promise a way out (each in their own way)) {again this may just be me}
#8: Oldies Station
Stressed out talked about the fear of getting older. In oldies station we deal with the consequences of it (growing older) and what it entails (ex losing close friends). Your eyes adjust to the darkness as you push on though. Surprisingly (imo) lacks positivity or hope for a tøp song.
#7: Navigating
If Migrane was describing the emotions you feel, Navigating would highlight the effects of these emotions. Catchy tune and sounds phenomenonal. I love the use of time like in Midwest Indigo. If any song were to break beyond the fan base it should be this.
#6: The Craving
Both versions offer a different sound that what is seen on other Clancy songs. Raw and genuine. The single version can also be a nice reminder of how hard it is to please fans and deal with your emotions when a song isn't perceived well.
#5: Vignette
I like the concept of being swallowed by a vignette. Another song that can be interpreted either in a lore way or as is (addiction). Catchy musically. May drop down as I listen to it more.
#4: Overcompensate
The reimagined version of bandito symblolizing how it's time to tear apart this world is nice. Personally don't relate much to the lyrics but the song is musically satisfying and the ideal opening track.
#3: Midwest Indigo
For every reason you stated.
#2: Paladin Strait
A song that can be interpreted differently depending on whether or not you care for the lore for ex. the hurling storm and angry waves could represent how difficult and can be to gain courage to face our demons and fight for control (lore) or represent our emotional turbulence (no lore). Very lyrically rich, relatable and calming. Love that it emphasises the importance of relationships.
#1: Snap Back
Imagery and lyrics that reach out. Relatable themes
Midwest Indigo is easily the best on the album for me and one of the best in their discography!
Eyyy I predicted Midwest Indigo would be your favorite!
Also, the thing about the “carnival music”, do you not remember how TØP got popular with Heathens? 🙄
That line made me laugh but god I can’t unhear it now
Routine In The Night is number 1.
Anthem of the nighshift worker.
Midwest Indigo is my favourite song too! I agree and disagree with all your rankings. This album is too tight to be able to definitively rank the songs one way or the other. Initially I didn't like Next Semester, but it makes so much sense now in the context of the album as a whole, this is a no skip album for me.
Professor, you need to save your videos for 2025, only two left 😅
Clifford you should check out Bilmuri and their lyrics
All.my favs as your least favs hurts.
We disagree on everything😅 except for vignette maybe
O prof enlouqueceu
