    I started out with about 20 CPD a year ago, they were so tiny you couldn't even tell what they "really" were, some were sucked up when I cleaned the tank, some by the filter, some by "who knows what" and now I have a solid group and I keep adding breeding pair to a small little 20 Gal Tall and then throwing the eggs into this 10 gal I have in another room with nothing but CPD eggs and plants.. Now I have 7 males and 3 females and they have been spawning like crazy. I keep bringing them to my LFS and the guy keeps giving me credit. People are buying them faster than you would believe. I think I'm going to keep breeding them for a while because they're so beautiful, they are in such high demand and the LFS is giving me some serious credit because this fish is currently considered one of the most desirable fish. The LFS is charging $6 ea.
    Thanks for making the video and sharing.

    7 years later and this video is still useful to me. I just got my new 20 gallon long setup for mine a group of 10 and managed to capture some eggs! Hopefully all goes well as last time I had some issues with the eggs molding over. Going to be carefully watching these little guys

      Usually the “molding” is from infertile eggs and or excess food.

    Thanks for a well documented video! I've had CPDs breed successfully in a community tank before (about 2 fry made it to adulthood), but it was all accidental... made me feel good that they like the tank enough to breed at least, but I'd like to do it on purpose some time.

    Mine took up to 4 or 5 days to hatch. My pH was around 8 and TDS just over 200. Temp ranged from 70-78 but was usually around 73-74. That might be why it took longer for them to hatch. I don't know what they are eating but I am feeding them 4 different things in hopes one of them works and the water does have microorganisms, so far so good with about 10 of them. The adult pair were laying their eggs in some dwarf hairgrass I let float on the surface in a stagnant corner. When I moved it, I noticed a few eggs fall out and got them with a pipette. They hatched in a bowl I had with the two fry I caught in the tank. I had to move them back to the main tank since the bowl was starting to build up some nitrites. I had to remove the parents, since they'll eventually eat every last one of their fry.

    great video.. i'm breeding these beauties as well at home! what I normally do is, put the breeding trio in a tank with loads of moss.. after a week I'll take out the parents and wait for fry.. this approach looks more simple. do you empty the plastic container daily? and what is the average amount of fry?

    • @LRBaquatics
      @LRBaquatics  8 років тому +1

      Thanks! The way you breed them is kinda how I breed my rainbowfish but wait 2-3 weeks because thats around the incubation time for rainbow fish eggs. But to get back to CPDs I have been emptying every other day since the incubation time of the eggs is around 48 hrs. Not really sure how many I dont really count I just know its plenty and now as shown in the video I am pulling fry and eggs.

    do you feed them anything when theyre this small? i have some fry in a separate container(they would stick to the glass in the tank then they'd be gone the next few days, i assume the parents eventually ate them). so far ive tried to feed them fine egg yolk, but i dont know if theyre actually eating anything.

    • @LRBaquatics
      @LRBaquatics  7 років тому

      I use the Sera Micron food. Being planted and mature tanks that they are raised up in provides small microorganisms for them as well and if the fish dont eat the micro food than the small organism will which in turn makes a cycle of food that doesnt sit and rot. Usually you can tell if they arent eating because you will see food fungus up or root on the substrate but if you dont see that then you may have the same type of cycle that I mentioned above going on.

    Hello , what do you think about using a tank such as the betta trio to breed these I would use 2 chambers for the separated males and females then move the eggs to the third then finally put the adults back to a main tank and raise the fry separating by size until they could join the adults

    Thinking about trying this. Got a few questions. 1. How old must they be to start spawning? 2. Have you had success with keeping about 20 of them together and then they breed? 3. How can you tell when you should put them together and that they will breed?

    • @LRBaquatics
      @LRBaquatics  7 років тому

      They can breed at a fairly small size. I just keep 1 male and 2 females together and they breed all the time. You can keep 20 of them and pick your best one for breeding and you can tell male and female apart by size. Femals get plump with eggs.

    • @LRBaquatics

      Yes but usually the parents will predate but if enough coverage or the removal of the parents in a no filter setup as long as it isn’t very deep tank. Baby fish like shallow water especially cpd since they live in shallow waters in nature.

    • @LRBaquatics

      Correct its best to raise them in shallow water no higher than a 10g. They do not free swim when they are first born, they stick to the glass or bottom and sit there for a couple days til they are free swimming. Try not to feed them to much too. Thats why I like dirty tanks so they can naturally graze.

    • @LRBaquatics

      L.R.Bretz's Aquatics wow just caught you on the congo live stream. You really are dedicated to your channel! Thanks for responding. If they dont find a spot they like, and he continues to chase her day and night, should I remove them and put them back in their community tank?

      @LRBaquatics  6 років тому +1

      The love of the hobby keeps me dedicated to it and all the awesome people in the hobby. I would just keep a eye out to make sure she isnt to stressed. You can usually tell when females have eggs in there bellies or not and will be plump. They like to breed in mosses or fine plants bunched up. I dont think you really will need to move them our not. Maybe if you can find another female and that will increase your chances.

      No, never had a issue. Prolly cause they are planted tanks and have lots of microorganisms.

      My guppies eat them up. I have heard they were a form of a gnat but I haven't seen any parents. Just the swimming larvae.
