I thought you weren’t supposed to keep CPD and Danio erythromicron together for breeding purposes because they can crossbreed. And we’re supposed to keep the crossbreeds out of the hobby to keep the lines true(?) I’ve seen a store selling the crossbreeds of these two for twice as much

"I do a lot of water changes because it's an active substrate" - can you explain that? Wouldn't an active substrate contribute positively to the water quality?
Also, what are the chances in a scenario like in this tank that you get crossbreeds? Erythromicron and margaritatus are really closely related, right?
They rarely cross...but are able to. They're just shy, and they eat their own fry heavily, so unless you try to cross them, its rare to see ...but they do look cool.
As for active substrate.... that means active vs. Inactive (or giving off ammonia, nitrates and nitrites due to organic matter. So you need to establish good bacteria in your filters and substrate/plants and decor to handle that constant leak of biological fertilizers...which the plants all love (and algae does too). But the for the first month to 2 months of using active substrate, you need to help out the system and get rid of excess Dissolved harmful chemicals for shrimp and fish. So thus more water changes until the substrate off gassing and dissolving plateaus

Your celestial pearl danios are so rich in contrast and colors. Do you have any idea why some, like yours, look so pretty and others are a lot more pale? Are those just natural variations (e.g. depending on where they were caught), or is that already a result of breeding?
It's been a while since this video came out. But, still useful. Per the Myanmar situation, I had been unsuccessfully trying to breed them. I finally have a system that works. An egg trap system. I actually saw an egg get fertilized using a macro lens. I'm hooked.
I just got back from hurricane Ida and my fry which were... (Poor vocabulary) stuck to the glass like plecos, are now free swimming after hitting that tank with green water before evacuating. No new food for days. Day before yesterday someone came in and threw some powdered food at them. Today there's like 6 fry free swimming over like... A lot of eggs.
I have a machine which works. But I'm down to 6 breeders, and one extra male in another tank. Exciting times, but feels like a lot at risk.
I'm going to make another larger egg trap and stuff it with java Fern and hopefully get my Congos to breed. They spawn like almost every day, but the yoyos and pentazonas eat them.
Nice system! Sounds really healthy. And if you live down in the sunbelt of the USA, You should be able to make green water in the windows of your house, year round!
@@Fishtory yes, I actually do it outside until frost, then I listen to complaints until spring. For some reason I can never get other cultures working. The infusoria will populate, but never in clouds like I see. Sure, I can hatch baby brine, but that's not really a culture that keeps itself going. I'm thinking about buying some vinegar eels just to have some diversity.
And I was wrong.... Or things developed. I can't count all the free swimmers and larvae(?). Holy crap I think I have a colony if I can just keep this one generation alive.

Hi there!, I'm planning on getting CPDs toget them to breed in Myanmar's warmer temperature in a densely planted pond setup(They're from the cooler eastern region). Whats the warmest temperature they were in, and how well do they fare with water flow (I'm using a wavemaker padded with a filter sponge sheet on the intake slots to prevent fish getting sucked in)
They dont like much of any flow...they love dense vegetation and leaf litter with mild tannins ... and can withstand 80 degrees for a while... however breed at the start of the wet season when the cool rains make their water 68-74ish....i breed mine around 72 or 74 after having them in a tannic and more acidic environment for a few weeks...then put low tds, cool water into a 50% water change
@@Fishtory the rains aren't that cool down south, and the main purpose of the wavemaker was for thermo regulation by evaporative cooling and circulation for the dense aquatic plants in the pond. The pond consists of of 2 X 2 4' by 3.5' sections, with only gentle flow in three of the four sections. What would you suggest to substitute for this system?
Gosh I was worried that my water hardness and pH was too low ( pH is around 7) , I bought them yesterday as an impulsive shopping ( I know it's wrong ,should have done research first ) and put them in my soft water tank with espei rasboras and neon tetras ( plus brigittae rasbora and panda Corys ) , so I was reading they need hard water and I was panicking that I had made a mistake .
Oh they'll be totally fine :) they like a bit of minerality but actually do well even in low ph (they tend to live in limestone lined creeks and rivers, but then in the wet season, leaves and plant debris is all over as the water rises and the fish move into flooded forests too)
@@Fishtory thanks a lot . I was really panicking and didnt really wanna take them back to the shop ( also I don't think they'd take them back ) . You reckon they can tolerate little tannins of catappa leaves that I sometimes put in that tank ?
