I really, really love how all this early, wonderful concept art is being rediscovered and even turned into models. These things held me spellbound back in the 1970s when I was a kid - I've go gray hairs now, but I still LOVE seeing this stuff. Congratulations!
Thanks Viceroy. I do love a concept drawing. It inspires the rest of the design in ones head. Also adding the details is great fun just kitbashing and making it your own. More coming soon. Thanks for checking it out :-)
Do you prefer the "model-for-filming" look (under studio lighting, like ILM, ready to be filmed) or "ship-as-appears-on-screen" look? Or something in between? Always fascinating, those creative choices are. @@APmodels
You are 💯 % right. That was the first that came to my mind when I saw it. It's a new Sand Crawler concept so the Jawas will be happy this Christmas. And the lower panels at the side of the caterpillars are to low. That makes the vehicle a non all terrain transport. But the weathering technique is realistically perfect, interesting and cool.
You are so right. I do spend little time on the final shots. I'll be working on that for the future no doubt. Thanks for checking the videos out Lensflare Dave.
I'm going to have to look into that later cutter! All these years I've been drawing onto making tape and carefully cutting out tiny stencils with a razor!
Have a look at one of my previous videos, it may help. Laser cutting masking is at 6.25 onwards. Thanks for checking the videos out. ua-cam.com/video/z_Cg9ngscKY/v-deo.html
This is what star wars is really about, this is for me a perfect vehicle from the star wars world not the Disney crap that has followed, 77 to 83 nothing else matters.... Amazing model.
Thanks man. I do love the way it looks in reality. Some of the concept drawings were not used purely because of how they translated into 3d, this one works really well in my eyes. Thanks again.
It is an interesting concept, fortunately the production went for a more iconic shape, I Always remember the anecdote of a tescher that told me the experience of going to a cinema to see the empire strikes back, and he got really impressed by the ominous movement of the At at,
This is amazing, and I’m sure therapeutic for you, a chance to make something one of a kind. Honestly these vids are my favourite to watch on UA-cam. You are a true master and make many people happy to log on! Thank you.
Thank you sir. I think it does have some kind of BSG feel to it. I try to keep the painting in a SW painting style. Much different to most modern styles, but i think it was the genesis of modern model painting. Thanks for checking the videos out :-)
A fantastic video and channel, great to see this design brought to life like this. I totally agree with you about Johnston and McQuarrie's influence on the original trilogy, I think McQuarrie got the lion's share of the credit while Cantwell and Johnston were maybe slightly less publicised, even to this day. Your work is perfect here, I'm looking forward to watching all your uploads!
Weldon 3 or Weldon 4; qualifier: if you have tight joints. 4 is less viscous so will penetrate joints deeper but takes longer to fully dry. 4 will also have less hazing. 3 is a bit more “consumer” friendly. 4 you’ll need excellent ventilation and organic respirators; always a good idea even w 3. We’ve used 4 for everything from acrylic turntable covers to scale models.
Absolutely beautiful Andy. I can see how the attention to detail really sells the paint job. It certainly looks more like a Sandcrawler than the final AT-AT. My only query is the aesthetic - I'm not sure about an Imperial vehicle looking grungy. I'm sure that they would have lots of minions whose job it would be to keep things like this clean!
Hi spacedock. Yeah, i thought about that for a while myself. Should i keep it more new looking, but eventually decided to do the same kind of weathering as they did on the AT-AT. I think for the next one i'll try a slightly less battered approach to see how it compares. Thanks for watching the videos, i really appreciate it. :-)
Oy, that got my attention. Nice. Got kinda dizzy on the intro 😉. Coupla questions? Q1) what thickness acrylic/Perspex did you use? Looks like mix of 1/8 &1/4” (3mm/6mm) though looked like some was thinner, perhaps built up styrene? Q2) any thoughts you can share on how you did the angled edge joinery? Our laser gets here in a few weeks, thinking of making some angle jigs for fixed edge angles to see how it works, we’ll see. In the meantime gonna be a long night, heading over to Fusion 360 to model this thing, thinking 1:22.5 scale 😁 Thinking it’d look nice cut out of SR-MDF as well. Cheers, nice work!
@@APmodels survived the 60’s and 70’s, so was a bit nostalgic of old TV special effects. Got a lot of her drawn up in 360 last night. Think we’ll be going w SR-MDF for our version. That way we can keep the weight manageable in 22:5 and can can use the angle jig on the little J Byrnes saw for the miter cuts if the laser doesn’t “cut it” (bad early morning Dad joke). Still gonna try a angle jig on the Epi when it gets here. I recognize the Johnston sketch, gonna go back through the ‘ol book collection and see if I can locate any others for detailing. Might use a bit of poetic license and take some details from some of his other sketches he did while evolving the AT-AT. Gonna be a bit of a break from building Foss/Robertson inspired LDCOs (Large Dust Collecting Objects per the wife). Don’t make uTub vids; haven’t posted any full builds on The RPF since my son built the 22:5 Stormwalker from Leviathan years ago. Think this’ll make a good build blog…a bit of sawing/lasering , a bit of 3D printing, a bit of brass machining should make for an entertaining holiday build. Thanks for the inspiration 😉

Beautifully painted, and a great finished model. Perhaps a bit more wear and tear along the track covers which I think would have been really worn and battered. I'm a fan of your work now, newly subscribed. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Dave. I think you're right. I could have gone in harder to start with, but i like to creep up on these finishes slowly just in case i overdo it. No doubt after a few weeks on the shelf it will get another going over. Thanks for checking out the videos, and thank you for the subscription.
Hi there. There will be no files as this doesnt exist in this form as an STL. Its all acrylic sheet. At this size 3d printing flat surfaces doesn't give the finish of the acrylic. Buut if you fancy a kit, just let me know and ill sort one out for you. Thanks for checking it out.
It seems to have been inspired by an amphibious tracked armored vehicle, which is great because those are some of the largest and whackiest-looking real-life vehicles ou there.
This channel has been around for 15 years and I'm only just discovering it now? I feel like a RIGHT IDIOT!!! 😆 Good news for me is I now have 15 years worth of great videos to catch up on!
Very nice model but the pointing hands are way to much. The weathering i think is to much too. In the Star - Wars time they should have new materials that didn't rust.
Just wait a bit and it will be in a disney production. They recycled almost all old drawings from real artists so far, instead of investing in new stuff.
Yowza... that looks good!
From how it looked with just the primer to where it ended up is just fantastic. A masterclass in creating a 'used universe' model.

Awesome, this should still be a vehicle in star wars.
Love it! It is like a large version of the G.I. Joe Cobra tank.
I was thinking the same thing its a Cobra H.I.S.S tank
Wonder where GI Joe got the idea?? ;-)
Best weathering I've seen. Looks like ILM work.
Thanks, im trying all the time to get it more like my childhood favourites. 1970/80's ILM is a style which i just love.

Has a very Hiss tank vibe to it. Love it!!!
So basically, it's an Imperial Sandcrawler?
Yeah i guess so. Concept sketches just have that kind of influence and style.
Whe I see it I can feel the heavy weight and the hard, un-penetrable structure, like a Imperial vehicle should be. Congratulations. Good job.
Yeah, like a tiny sandcrawler. War Turtles and Chicken Walkers
Hey the Jawas had to get the sandcrawler from someone. It was probably abandoned by some empire's years ago, so the Jewas snatched it up.
Wonderful work, and not going to lie, I prefer it to the screen ATATs
Thanks @volaim70. I think it looks pretty mean as well. But i do love an AT-AT. Cant wait to get some shots of them all together.
Ohhh this little master work needs its own photoshoot with propper light and all.. Nice job!
