    Just a suggestion Matt, instead of using vice grips on the lines which you can split that nut or deform it and it will never seal ... Or you can get a set of what they call line wrenches which are specifically designed for brake lines...

    Did this on my 86 XJ. Picked up a 95 rebuilt booster and new master cylinder. Ended up making a spacer from a plastic cutting board I got from the dollar store next door to Autozone. Bored out the hole and ground a flat spot to match the old rod. Bent up some lines after getting 2 new nuts to match the new MC and reused the old nuts on the proportioning valve. One of the easier upgrades to the Jeep. This upgrade cut my braking efforts in half. I have 33's and it stops better than it did with factory size tires.

    I was kind of hesitant to do the swap. I found this video and after getting the info off this Video as to what models are inter changeable, I was off to the junk yard. Great instruction. Thanks for mentioning what model to pull the parts from to install in our 92 XJ.

    Never heard of them, you might want to stay tuned for my 3.5" Junkyard lift that will be coming as soon as the rain and cold goes away. And ya, 3" is noticeable.

    Currently in the middle of swapping a 96 master and booster into my 94. Excellent video.
    Edit: Finished, brakes much better

    Hey Matt. I just adjusted my throttle pedal height for my 89 XJ and took step by step picks of the whole process. I had a hard time finding solutions online so I figured one out myself. I wanted the throttle pedal to be the same height as the brake pedal because the throttle was about 1 1/2 to 2 inches lower than the brake pedal. Let me know if you want the pixs

    Just put a 98 ZJ booster on my 88 MJ, had some trouble getting the brake light contactor switch to work again, but all in all went very well. Thanks for the tutorial!

      bleepinjeep Exactly, alot of trial and error. Even had to bring the Dremel underneath the footwell with me a couple times to fine tune it. Not a comfortable experience, to say the least.

  • @bleepinjeep
    @bleepinjeep  12 років тому

    well, I'll let you know as soon as I get the new brake lines on and the system bled. Not that it doesn't stop well now... but when you add bigger tires that is a lot more weight to try and stop. Apparently some people can lock up all four tires on pavement after the upgrade.

  • @bleepinjeep
    @bleepinjeep  12 років тому

    You'll need the 95 YJ with the dual diaphragm booster. I think they were only in the late 95's. The XJ booster looks the same but I think the rod is much longer on the YJ.

    I just did this swap on my 87 cherokee chief using a 2000 grand cherokee booster and master cylinder. First off it didn't fit. I had to use a grinder and cut out a small rectangle in the pinch seam on the top of the firewall. Then either hoses fit or bolted together. So I had to make them luckly a friend cane over and took care of that for me. As for a simple bolt in swap lol.. in my case it was a full day nightmare. I love the videos though! Keep em commin!

    I had a 95 Ram 1500 with the magnum V8 in it way back when I was much younger (truck was only a couple years old at that time). I had got on it pretty hard and it blew that large vacuum line off the brake booster and it made my brake pedal so hard to press I had to stand on it with both feet digging my back into the seat trying to stop. I ended up having to shift it down into 2nd then 1st (automatic) and ground my tires against the side of a curb trying to stop before I rear-ended a car ahead of me (freaked out and forgot about the emergency brakes lol). It was about 16 years ago when I was 16 years old, I'm 32 now.

  • @bleepinjeep
    @bleepinjeep  11 років тому

    It could be the booster, or maybe a bad brake line. The MJ's had some sort of weird proportioning valve on the rear axle that you might want to check out.

    After watching this video, it gave me an idea of what I'd like to do to this 1991 model Cherokee that I have, in addition to upgrading to rear disc brakes

  • @DEFiANCE665

    Next time pull the front seat out, it helps.
    I put the booster from my old 97 cherokee in there. It works, but the pedal is ~1" higher than stock.
    Tons better than the old single diaphragm, or driving around with no power brakes like I was for a while.

    Use a 3/8 line wrench! Using vice grips on brake fittings should only be a last resort...that’s mechanics 101

    • @komoru

      Yeah, I saw that and clicked off the video. The fact that he said to break the brake line nuts with vice grips is super amateur.

    check to see if you are getting a good vacuum coming from the line going into the brake booster.

    I also wanted to add THAT I ASSEMBLED THESE WHEN I WORKED AT CHRYSLER IN THE LATE 80S AND THE BOOSTER PEICE MUST BE TREATED WITH KID GLOVES AS I WAS TOLD THERE IS GLASS PEICES IN THEM WE WOULD SHAKE THEM TO LISTEN FOR ANY RATTLING AND ANY RATTLING MEANT THEY WERE DAMAGED IN SIDE AND NO GOOD.

    Great video. I have a 90 XJ with ABS and I am right in the middle of doing this swap. Only issue I am having is that on the bottom of the proportioning valve there is an extra place for another fitting to go into that I removed. Does this just need to be capped off?

    100 centimeters is one meter (more than a yard) you were measuring millimeters. in meter has 100 centimeters or 1000 millimeters (10 millimeters equal one centimeter)

  • @vincenthardin2020
    @vincenthardin2020 7 років тому

    Did you try to put the original master cylinder on the new booster instead of having to do all of the brake line bending? Seems like trying that first would have been easier.

    You should of used flex steel braid from the master to the prop. valve.

  • @GhostFleetServices
    @GhostFleetServices 11 років тому

    I'm willing to bet on your hard lines or your soft lines being clogged. Mostly likely rusted out from the inside, and you have a restriction in them causing your brake pedal to be hard to push. (because only x amount of fluid can make it through restriction.)
    Personally i'd buy all new brakelines and run them from the master/prop valve all the way back to all four wheels.
    Before this though you could try blowing some compressed air through the lines to try to clean em up. Goodluck!

    I have a 2000 4WD XJ Classic 4.0L Auto. The break padal is hard when pressed. This has been the case since I bought it 3 years ago. I have replaced the Vacum booster, master cylender, proportional valve. Also replaced Front disks with pads and even replaced Calipers. Replaced rear drums and pads, but the problem is still there. What else coudl be the problem. The XJ runs great. There is no Engine Check light. What could be causing the had break padal???

    I know it's not normal because I have another 2000 XJ Sport that feels normal. I have also owned a '98 before, so I know what normal XJ break pedal feels like. Can the break lines be bad? How do I test for that? When I bought this XJ it had lots of rust and corrrosion underneath. It seems to have been a Winter car in Boston.

Also, could the proportioning valve be causing the prior mentioned problems? Any recommendations would help. Due to safety concerns I will put brakes(new axle with brakes) on the trailer. Got the XJ completely 100% free with a 4.0 engine is good its got 160k miles on it runs perfectly good.
