      @@fallinginthed33p exactly. Mike would really guide him on placements and where to push and pull back on the harsh vocals. You can hear how much more dynamic Chester is from Grey Daze to the Hybrid Theory album. He was definitely talented l, but Mike was really able to help him tighten up everything and become the force he was.

    You should really watch her Kia Forum performance. She doesn't have any of the problems of the livestream. She annihilates every song, especially Keys to the Kingdom toward the end. At the recent NYC show she also did a crazy improvised 8 second scream during the outro of Faint that sounded so effortless and gnarly. She definitely had nerves during the livestream, but those are all gone. Frankly, even Mike sounded worse during the livestream compared to how well he killed it at the last two shows.

    Her distortion definitely is a lot looser sounding and has a lot more note to it. She's been leaning on it more for the older songs for the concerts than she did at the livestream. It has a pretty dynamic onset and exit, so it gives the harsh vocals a lot more of an unhinged, chaotic feeling.

    maybe i am wrong but it seems that female vocalists often push less and choose the "safest" approach and therefore are less prone to losing their voice. emily sounds like shes holding back and i think it is a good thing. she is 38 years old and now has to perform all this hard songs for two hours which was very hard for chester himself.
    it is funny to me when i see some comments about her not hitting 100% of the notes. That setlist is nearly impossible to perform perfect.
    nice video btw!

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  5 днів тому +13

    • @GabiBrooks
      @GabiBrooks 5 днів тому +15

      I have to say, as a female screamer I feel like it's the opposite. I feel like we have to push more because we sound thinner naturally and we usually try to compensate. That and the fact that we have less lung capacity makes it necessary to do so. I think it sounds more relaxed just cause there's less low overtones to it generally, but Emily clearly makes a lot of effort.

    • @KamoMustafaWWE
      @KamoMustafaWWE 5 днів тому +1

      I wouldn't say holding back. I would say she found what was comfortable for her and what works for her voice. Then again, the music was not written for her, so she might not feel as passionate about it as Chester was, because he felt it. She's doing the best she can with it, but not trying to be Chester. She may take a different approach when it comes to her own music and that will be found out when the album comes.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  5 днів тому +7

      It's like Chester says in THIS video! We can all learn to "relax" into our voices when screaming. We can push too... A balance is the right approach, and we all have to experiment to find our own balances.

  • @nathansmith891
    @nathansmith891 5 днів тому +15

    Chester switched up a lot of his techniques over time. Especially on the "shut up" part of One step closer. On Live in Texas he does closer to what it is on the album. He started throwing in the deeper stuff later on. I wonder if it was to give his voice a little bit of a rest during songs like that. He pretty much quit doing Crawling as the original version, and they started doing that piano version.

    I still think it sounds great, and it makes her voice feel more ‘real’ and human. To me, it’s part of her unique style.

    I´m sorry for my brutal honesty but IT MAKES ME ANGRY that people think the voice cracks are "bad, not on purpose, signs of bad singer"
    GO LISTEN TO KURT COBAIN´s MTV UNPLUGGED! Dude was cracking on every song. About a Girl (Easy Frienddddd), Come as You are (as An oooold), Where did you sleep last night (I would shiveeeeeeuuoooouooooo), Lake of Fire (Julyyyyyyyy), etc etc etc.
    I always found that BEAUTIFUL and you know what? It also means Kurt used a PROPER fry singing technique! Means the singer is singing CLEAN NOTES underneath all these filters/layers. A bad technique singer will just pull the notes from chest like Dave Grohl does ("I´ve got another confession to maaake") and that´s NOT HEALTHY, doesn´t have vibrato or dynamics, it doesn´t sound as good live too.
    So please stop judging Emily cracks, they are intentional and they are beautiful!

    Chester had such a precisce control over the amount of grit and distortion he could jump in and out of with his voice it at different hues and colors, completley confusing adept listners as to where his transitions lied, And the distortion itself was always clean and harmonically produced many pleasing edgy overtones. and often times sounded like a self-harmonizing vocal effect. The height of Chesters vocal prowess lied between 2004-2008. Between those years, especially 2007 he was an absolute war machine, afterwards Chester lost the very middleground of an aggressive clean classic rock sound. It is pretty obvious in more middle ground sections where he would masterfully execute this like faint or bleed it out, he no longer had the ability to blend those sounds as well and opted to either not distort, or go at a full distortion that sounded a lot throatier and sizzly. I honestly believe that after The Hunting Party Chester intutivley knew this and helped push for the more clean sounds of One More Light. I feel like this is where Emily is at. She has an incredible voice, but she either goes at an overly distorted mode or a sound that is pure and clean with little hues in between and without much of the carefully laced dynamics and nuance Chester at his prime sang with. And sadly the distortion itself is plagued with constriction and very dirty overtones that sound clenched instead of freed. Its honestly impressive she can do that as much as she has, but its obvious by the amount of shakiness and cracks through some songs that a fully scheduled tour would annihlate her. I still like her, and even though some LP songs could use some work, Emptiness Machine sounds amazing with Emily clearly being who she is vocally without any pressure

    If you compare the studio screaming from One Step Closer to Emily's scream, it's a bit closer, but his *live* screams and studio meteora+ seem to be a lot more fleshed out. It seems like Chesters screaming maybe wasn't as developed when he recorded Hybrid Theory. It would be cool if Emily can flesh out her scream similarly over time.

    It doesn't seem like she is using a proper fry scream, which is what you show and what Cheater does. Her "scream" seems unsafe for me, it sounds like she is just pushing more air into her regular gritty singing so it sounds more like a scream, it doesn't sound that she is getting it from a relaxed head voice. That's a lot more air pushed than what fry scream requires. She will won't be able to hold anywhere close on let's say given up and she will sound thin, cause more air = squeal and not fat scream.

    In the concert after the livestream, she actually sounded a good bit better and that concert was twice as long. Listen to more recent Dead Sara stuff. She has more control of her screaming/ scream singing there but I agree with you. She has a much looser and "wilder" approach than Chester said. I think she's an incredible singer but I also think she'll learn more control and diverse textures with her screams/scream singing. Chester had amazing technique and I'm confident that Emily will learn healthier technique the more she works with Mike and the band. From a purely technical standpoint, I think Chester had better technique than Emily does with the scream singing for sure. That song has over a BILLION and a half views. It's a seriously life changing song!
    They (LP laura pergolizzi, they/them) have written songs for Rhianna, Christina Aguilera, Céline and more.
    Also, LP does a live version of their song "One That You Love" (live on a rooftop in france i believe) which contains one single 15 second note that I would seriously pack up and dedicate my life to if I could!! Lol
    LP is another rabbit hole of awesomeness that I would say is similar to when I heard Ren for the first time. You won't be disappointed I promise!!!

    ... Hello from France (sorry about my bad english, and I am very old too, and a sub here lol) ... So okay how we say in France "tu coupes la patte d'une mouche an 4" , in english "you are cutting the leg of a flie in 4 " (you see what I mean ;) ) ...
    So please the internet should let Emily breath a little more (I read + 100 reactions about the new song and the livestream, , a lot of SH@T to read, I know Chester this, Chester that , Mr Bennington is gone now for 7 years, you all have to turn a little bit slowly this page ... We are alive now in 2024 and after ... Hey this was a 2 hour first show, that's awesome long !!! I know all this is interresting, comparisons, Scienthologie (really US this crap) and what else ? The size of her "bra" perhaps , (lol) !!! She is doing better and better, the band too, see the 2 concerts these last days in LA and NY, awesome, always 2 hours !!!
    LP was'nt even my "real" taste (I am an Extreme Black/Death/Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal fan with dissonance if possible) , but I liked them, LP, in their time, I liked Chester, but I liked (more) Layne Staley, the greatest in my taste (he had A SCREAM, never a failure in his singing too), RIP both ...
    So Emily is here now, singing, screaming ... I just hope it will go on a long time in the futur, long live Emily !!! And F..@K the haters !!!
    You are doing an super work on your channel, go on !!!
    Oh and yes Emily as a little bit the same scream that the singer of 30 Seconds to Mars, Jared Leto, I love him so much as an actor ...

    Great break down I think Emily's vocals will evolve with the band she definitely needs the right vocal coach if she doesn't have one to make sure she's protecting her voice using the proper techniques. If you listen to LP from the beginning Chester vocals was clean and not very thick but over time he grew so much worked his tail off to develop something very special and unique. Emily is at a solid starting point she sounds great now she's definitely got the goods things are only going to get better with hard work. Maybe you might want to reach out to them about being a personal vocal coach 👀👌 💯

    Hi Chris, belated Happy Birthday, your direct voice comparison between Chester and Emily is beautifully portrayed by you. A user here on UA-cam criticized Emily for not singing with the pain of Chester. I mean as I know that Chester was transferring his pain from his life on stage to the audience, he was screaming the pain out of himself. With Emily, the singing talent is also added to the singing technique. That’s why she can never imitate the song of Chester because she didn’t have the pain in her life

      the lessons are great, been in several courses. It certainly inspired me to play around with my voice in many different ways and now I'm proud of the arsenal of different tones and sounds that I have found which are unique to my voice :D I feel like Chris's approach is great mindset wise, it's hilarious to do the weird noises and exercises and it yields great results (in my experience)
      EDIT: Also I might add, he's a master at making me feel comfortable sounding bad, which is the first step to experimenting. Watching him be all silly and funny with it inspires me to do the same, which is DEFINITELY the most important thing in singing - to not judge yourself and your tone when you are trying out new things!

    Hey Chris, first of all great video as always. I think it would be interesting to do the same comparison between their distorted singing. We know Chester’s sounded great but he almost completely dropped it around 2010, so I’m curious to know if you think Emily’s technique is healthier.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  5 днів тому +2

      Great suggestion... I did talk about their distorted singing approach in this video a bit too... Basically both of these vocalists are using "sing screaming" primarily, so to discuss their screams is a partial analysis of their distorted singing as well. But you could definitely go more down that rabbit hole!

    • @NTL_0
      @NTL_0 5 днів тому

      @@chrisliepe Yeah it’s basically an expansion of that part of the video. What makes me curious is the fact that he never seemed to have problems with the scream, but he clearly had problems with the distorted singing (i think Mike explicitly said that in an interview) so something has to be very different between the two (i think?)
