    I had a Realistic Navajo 23 channel CB with a d104 power mic.. about 500 ft above sea level.. back in the mid-70s in So. Cal. I had a great time as a kid especially talking skip on a few occasions from California to Texas to Ohio and Florida in the span of a half hour..

      Just started watching Andy, and He too, informative.
      Enjoy watching and learning from you younger guys who have the CB bug also. May the airwaves once again scream with voices of new friends, and old one as well, asking for a breaker. 73's my new friends. Hope to QSO one day 😂. 107, The Village Idiot, Scott. 27.165 AM/27.385 LSB Dallas (Garland), Texas USA

      @@andykirby This is a really good video. I would like to make a suggestion though Even though your loop works good the efficiency is quite low probably less than 25% on the other hand a simple wire dipole put into a inverted V configuration operates at 98% efficiency and has a much broader frequency range and added bonus is when the angle between the legs is adjusted correctly you obtain a perfect 50 ohm match to the transmitter. You can easily install these in a couple of minutes flat by using a fiberglass telescopic mast overall electrical length of the inverted V is approximately 17 ft 2 in on 27.305Mhz You only have to go up about 8-9 ft in the air and the antenna acts as the guidelines for the mast. I have used this type of antenna for decades I have been an amateur radio operator since 1966.

    • @kq6up
      @kq6up 2 роки тому

      @@ke4uyp I don't think the efficiency is that low on the higher bands.

    • @ke4uyp
      @ke4uyp 2 роки тому

      @@kq6up Hi Chris there is indeed a significant difference in efficiency I have been using EZNEC antenna modeling software for about 15 years and you can clearly demonstrate the difference in efficiency. Using this software here is some examples. The difference in actual input impedance and reactance is so dramatic it causes the radiation resistance to be extremely low and this is directly proportional to efficiency.
      27.3Mhz Inverted V Apex of the antenna at 8 and 1/2 ft above ground Impedance = 57.24 + J 8.38 ohms
      Top of loop at 9 ft above ground
      1m diameter Loop @ 27.3Mhz Impedance = 1.423 - J 1289 ohms

    Nice one Andy, liking this with all the CB stuff your doing, keep them coming mate..
    I think we really need to get CB blowing up again more than what it is. I personally think with what's current on going it is going to come to the point where we will be communicating more via CB and I got a feeling with the Government and their agenda with possible lockdowns ahead CB Homebasr & Mobile will be a good thing for us to communicate and keep us busy and sane.. 😁👍🏻

      @@johncrouch8988 It's been a very long time since I checked the regs / laws about HAM rigs on 11m, but as I recall (circa late 90's early 2k's), it's only illegal if the rig is *capable* of transmitting at higher power when on the CB band - meaning that if the rig has an internal manufacturer fitted limiter that prevents it transmitting higher than about 3.8W, ie "4 watt max" legal power, then it is actually permissible under UK law (and possibly other countries too). Back when CB was still licenced, you would also need to have a CB licence, as the HAM licence does (or didn't) cover the 11 meters band. The technical details about what does and doesn't count under law was complicated enough for most not to even bother in the first place. I remember about 20-odd years ago there was at least two manufactures who released HAM rigs that had a switch (either physical or software) that would change the rig between "HAM" use and "CB use exclusively, almost like it was operating as two separate transceivers in one box (which it was to some extent I suppose...).
      Strictly speaking, any DIY antenna on CB is also illegal as the law states that to build antennas or modify a transmitter (which technically an antenna will do...) requires at least a "Foundation” licence in the UK. Don't think the authorities would bother to come knocking these days, just because you stuck an old DB27 antenna on the metal patio table in the garden as a ground plane...
      Quite frankly though, no body really gives a crap anymore, not unless you are being a total dick and causing problems / RFI. A properly tuned ham rig and basic antenna, even if a mobile mag-mount whip attached to garden furniture, and you are unlikely to ever have an issue, unless some long bearded, furry toothed "Guardian of HAM" old fart, decides in his wisdom that "Thou shall be PUNISHED!" and complains to Ofcom and any other governing body that will listen.
      The reason HAM is dying is because of the cranky "old guard" set who mainly form the collective userbase, so quick to judge and bitch about something / someone, that it just ends up putting of any new blood from becoming an active member. I for one ditched it long ago, and it's even WORSE now!

      @@theuntidyworkbench7444 It's still illegal to use anything other than a bespoke CB radio, certified under ITU regulations for CB use. A Ham Radio transceiver, modified to cover CB frequencies is illegal for such use as it's only certified for use in the Ham bands, even if it is dialled back to 4w which of course it won't be as the main point in using one is for the extra power available. Who says Ham is dying? Foundation licence allocation is a strong as ever.
