This Walking Code video explore rotation and counterrotation of the core used to steer the body in different directions when we walk. This video is based on the Core Techniques of The Walking Code. To sign up for the full Walking Code Course, go to www.ToddMartinMD.com.
Most people think of the legs as the primary tools we use to walk. But the core is what guides every movement and makes them possible. The core is what tells the legs where to go. The better you understand your core movement, the better you will walk, the less stress will be placed on your joints, and the more you will keep your spine aligned.

I’m currently struggling how to walk properly. The ACL of my right knee had been torn twice and most leg and core muscle gone, had the last surgery done a year ago. Recently my knee got some weird popping and pain while walking and realize I been walking wrongly, thought walking was driven by my legs. That’s why I got much pain on my knee and my back. I have a clear plan what I should be working on after watching your video. Thank you so much Todd! Support from Hong Kong 🔥

    Brilliant piece Todd.
That circle walking at the end reminds me of Baguazhang
    (a chinese internal martial art)

Thanks. The 8 Techniques of The Walking Code are based on my anatomical analysis of the 8 Trigrams of Tai Chi which I believe are the same theory as Baguazhang. If you are interested you should check out some of my analysis which is in the Tai Chi videos I have posted on the channel

Is it the opposite? Right foot left foot?

  • @denniperez8028

It’s clear the pace to the right is left foot right foot. But what about when u walk straight to the front or turning counter clockwise?

I think you will understand it better if you start by watching this full playlist. ua-cam.com/video/YZ9bxkF0heE/v-deo.html
This will give you the basis for the system I use to describe the movements and then the other videos will probably make a lot more sense. In regards to clockwise or clockwise, they are all the same. The sequence is just a mirror image. People just tend to get used to using one side of their body more than the other, so some people might naturally step off with the right foot most of the time and some the left, but there is no change in technique. Every sequence is just done on the opposite side. I would study the Core Technique before going too much further with other videos to give yourself a baseline to start from.

@@ToddMartinMD yea but that’s my question. When I turn to the right 180 degrees I end up stepping off with my left foot and when I turn to the left I end up stepping off with the right. Wether i step off with the right or the left I don’t need to change the gait, meaning if I step off with my right my gait is going to be right foot left foot as a continue walking, right? Same thing with the left, if i step off with my left after I turn to the right I’m going to step off with the left and my gait is going to be left foot right foot. Am i right?

@@ToddMartinMD i usually walk in a straight line and keep turning 180 degrees to go back from point A to point B. I also walk around my house and I’m confused if I should walk clockwise or counterclockwise and also which foot I should step off depending if I start clockwise or counterclockwise.

Once you start walking, naturally who must alternate left-right-left or right-left-right. The leg you start with after you stop depends on what position you are in when you are standing still. Standing is not a symmetric position even though it looks like it. You will either be in the Core Technique of Lift Left or Lift Right depending on how your core is oriented. If you are standing with Lift Left, you will have to change weight to the right and then step forward with the left. IF you are standing with Lift Right, you will need to change weight to the left and then step off with the right. This is easier to understand if you have studied what the Core Techniques are. I don't know if you have done that yet.

@@ToddMartinMD that’s key, thank u. To alternate right-left-right and left-right-left in my case since i start the the right foot. But is conscious arm motion necessary while doing this?

Hi tood I think the arm swing is not only comme from rotation of the trunk but is to there is muscle like subscapularsis ters majour lats contribute in this arm swing because if we don't activate these muscle the arm is just is keep in down position like what I see your arm in high position and reaching forward because that of tip of muscle what make the counter balance betwin the contralateral leg and lat it easy swing forward I want you explain that for me

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  10 місяців тому

Yes, naturally there are other muscles that are working, but they are not muscles you need to make work. If you keep your shoulder and arm completely relaxed and walk with the proper core rotation, the arms will swing correctly. It is the same with your ankles. The ankle plantarflexors and dorsiflexors operate while we are walking, as do the quads and hamstrings, but there is no need to try and control them. Those actions take place naturally in response to the proper core movement based on ingrained neurologic reflexes.

When I demonstrate turning the left arm to the right and the right arm to the left, that is coming from the upper waist rotation just under the rib cage. You can’t isolate it while you are standing up. Lie down on your back with your knees bent. Rotate your right elbow up to your left knee in a sit up action. That lift of the right side of the chest is the rotation of the upper torso from the upper abs.
