    I have taken your advice and gave corrected my walking as I walk about 12 km per day . I can only say thank you .I no longer suffer from lower back pain after walking. I am 65 yrs and am fit and healthy. After years of walking I realised all the mistakes I was making walking. Thank you ❤

    So great. I've been confused about rotation and thought it was more generated from the hips. Oustanding presentation as usual!

    Thanks for these vids. I also got your book. In combo they are helping. I have decades of assorted balance issues and do a lot of balance adaptations, largely with my eyes. These vids help a lot with my horrid gait.

      I think when Dr. Marin points out the shadow on his shirt illustrating the rotation coming from the upper waist, and when turning the lower waist, it makes it easier to envision and with awareness, I believe this will all come into focus. I'll be sure to check myself tomorrow. Good luck!

    Hi Todd Martin, is correct the following?: to walk straightforward I have to rotate the upper waist to land with the heel, and to walk doing a turn I have to use only the lower abdominal muscles to land with the heel. What I should NOT do is to rotate with the upper waist and use the lower abdominal muscles at the same time to land with the heel, because that would cause a heavy stride (or 'over-striding', which you mentioned in the video "How to Walk Properly-Getting Started. Doctor Shows Proper Walking Technique and Posture", minute 24:18). Greetings.

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  Рік тому

      You almost got it. One clarification. You are always rotating with the waist. When you want to turn toward the forward leg, the upper waist continues to rotate in the same direction as it was during the swing through. When we walk in a straight line, we rotate the upper waist back toward the standing leg. So, you are correct that you use the lower abs to initiate the turn. The upper abs are already turning in that direction.

      @@ToddMartinMD Hi Todd, sorry for answer lately. I made the confusion between over-striding and heavy stride with the heel, a heavy stride with the heel is one of the consecuences of the over-striding (i thought they were the same).
      Still, thanks for the videos and the digital book. It's a lot of content to disgest compared to others videos on UA-cam about walking.

    Thank you - I am little bit confused. At 2:09 lower abs...so I knew from earlier video but than at 4:02 - upper waist muscles make a little move? Is that little move that I must do at the time heel hits the ground and then in the time from heel hits the ground to flat position the lower abs? Thank you.

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  Рік тому

      The little move from the upper abs takes you from the position where your heel is hovering about the ground and your rear heel is down to the position where your forward heel is touching the ground and the rear heel is elevated. That is the moment that the lower abs are engaged to transfer the weight onto the forward leg. When turning, you bypass the little move of the upper abs and keep them rotating forward on the side of the standing leg. So, you don't switch sides of the upper abs as you would if you wanted to keep walking in a straight line.

    Sometimes I try to figure out cues to help me walk correctly; for example, what do you think about "pretending to walk on a motorless treadmill"?

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  Рік тому +1

      Hmm. I am having trouble imagining how that would look or feel different than walking on level ground. Are you thinking about how your legs would force the belt to move, like what muscles are pushing it or pulling it?

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  Рік тому

      Thinking about this a little more, would the belt even move, or would you just end up walking forward and bump into the front or fall off the edge if there was no front?

    • @matteoalani
      @matteoalani Рік тому

      @@ToddMartinMDyeah, exactly, I'm trying to imagine my legs moving the belt. I mean, I could "move the belt" only with proper initiation, falling forward wouldn't cause any movement

    Plz classify upper waist and lower waist

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  Рік тому

      Upper waist-External Obliques, which rotate the thoracic spine forward and across to the opposite side. Lower waist-Internal Obliques, which rotate the lumbar spine and pelvis toward the same side while flexing the lumbar spine, posteriorly tilting the pelvis.

    Great video but I don’t really understand walking in a circle so does the movement of walking in a circle come from the lower abs?

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  Рік тому +1

      If you want to turn in the direction of the forward leg, yes, you have to initiate the turn with the lower and before the heel is placed. If you want to step forward, you initiate with the upper abs. The upper and lower abs on the same side of the body turn in opposite directions.

  • @mindsetmotivation9124
    @mindsetmotivation9124 Рік тому

    If I get this right. You pretty much use your lower core to turn more then people realize? Secondly when you hit the right foot down the left foots heel comes up as you progress thru the walk?

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  Рік тому

      You use you upper and lower core more than people realize. The combination and pattern of how you use them is what turns your body where you want. The rear heel comes up between the end of the upward arc of the swing leg and the time the heel hits. The rear heel is fully lifted at the moment the forward heel touches.

    My muscles under the chest are the first point i get pain when walking. At km 6-10 i think they are starting to hurt because they are overstressed. I thougt it is due to have the upper body straight, but it might also interfere with the heel. Thanks!
    Could you recommend some trainings?
    Maybe more walking....
    (i look to much to the ground, while walking. But i walk alot in the Mountains, so this is also necessary...)

      If you are looking down at times when it is not necessary, then you have a problem with how you are using your core. You should watch my video How to Stop the Forward Lean.
