I own Preston's complete Bach Organ works set, and it is one of my most precious possessions. I've done a lot of comparison listening, and return to this set of recordings. This recording is a fine example of what awaits you in the rest of the set. Crisp clear playing and sound, gorgeous organs, and about the music...well, I need say nothing about that at all.
You sound like a guy that is crazy nuts over classical organ music! ME TOO! I am 78 years old and have been in love with this amazing sound since I was 17 years old. My girlfriend invited me to sit next to her when she played a pipe organ one day. I would gladly live in a homeless shelter if I could play a pipe organ every day. This particular recording has amazing reproduction of the pedal. I am listening to it now in a medium size room with two Cerwin Vega 18" "Earthquaker" woofers. Amazing!
@@lenrusnak162 Yep, you got me right. I actually prefer piano, for its dynamic modulation ability. But pipe organ in a large resonant space, or a good recording on good speakers - well if God had a voice it surely would sound like this!!!
been searching and searching for the organist that can play the adagio at the right tempo, with real feeling and emotion, just enough rubato so that the organ "sings" but it's not turned into a romantic interpretation. It's as difficult as "o mensch bewein"' in that way - a solo singing vocal melody with an accompaniment, that needs to go straight to the heart but stay firmly in the baroque. This is about as good as it gets!! I've been trying to achieve the right balance all my life.... fantastic Mr Preston!
I can't believe that seven people have given this a 'thumbs down.' Thankfully 144 appreciate the fantastic work of this amazing organist. When our son was born in 1980 we couldn't come up with a name for him. So one evening I pulled out a record and lo and behold, there was our son's name...named after the fabulous Simon Preston!
Best overall Bach interpreter. Definitely. I still prefer Christian Barthen's rendition for this specific piece. But that is down to personal preference.
The best version ever by the best organist! Because this toccata need an organ with high frequence ( not a dark organ sound) the more the sound is thinner the more its amazing! I hope that someone has understood what i meant upthere.
Excellent! Had I been the recording engineer, though, I would have tightened up on the instrument... the acoustics of the building are a little too 'loose'... great playing from Simon, of course!!
There is no better organist on this planet than Simon Preston. If you only want the best, STOP! No need to look any further! You've found him!!! Thank you England! Thank you Mr. Preston! (How does it feel to be one of Gods chosen ones?)
it's a little Skippy and trite... and some phrases are "clipped"... especially in the pedal solo...and the adagio too... LOVE the organ... and registrations!!! still.. He's one of the GREATEST master of the instrument... with very little I don't like... is certainly made up by the much bigger picture which is WONDERFUL, his structure is amazing!!! AND what a wonderful man! I was lucky enough to play for him in a master class years ago... !
Tempi are, of course, matters of opinion. The contemporary review by Gramophone magazine referred to Preston's "unfailingly apt choice of tempo". But as I say, a matter of opinion. As a matter of interest, what was the objective basis underlying yours?
Take a few minutes off, put your earphones on and listen to Simon Preston playing this music. It is a gift from God.
RIP dear Simon. I learnt so much from you, and this performance is magnificent.

This version made this piece my favourite of Bach's organ works!
I have so many Bach favorites among the greatest organ compositions:
but THIS [exquisite performance by Simon Preston] is one of the best of them.

Just play what Bach wrote and it will go straight to the heart Bach gives all the clues about tempo. And robato and feeling.
In the Adagio your phrasing and the pulse, both in the melody and in the ostinato accompaniment, is very pleasant. Delightful. Thanks.
This is one of the most awesome Oregon pieces I've ever heard recorded! RIP Mr Preston.
Fix the typo
Wonderful. Simply wonderful.

Dear Simon,
to hear this, i break down on my knees. This is a sound spectacular. You're the abolut best!! Thank You very much and God bless.
The same emphatic enthusiasm in listening Preston's Bach. No better words could be.

Articulation and clarity of phrasing.... Hey, brilliant, and so many younger organists today lack this... punch and energy. Thank you, Simon.
This is the most inspired interpretation I've heard in a long time. Thank you, sir.
Wow, what a superb recording!

love this Simon cool man

Where is this organ? who built it? When?
Magnificent ! Can someone tell what organ this is please
The review in Gramophone magazine suggests the Sauer organ of St Peter’s Church, Waltrop.
The photo is of the Klais organ in Symphony Hall Birmingham UK.
Merci.

Technically well played, but a little too fast
A little to fast I agree

@@cymbaliv5586 No objective basis I suspect; just a couple of attention seekers probably..
I disagree.
