  • As a beginner, you're bound to make mistakes in your Carbide Create designs. In this video, I show how to use a Whiteside 6210 surfacing bit to take 1/10th of an inch off an alder guitar body blank using a pocket operation. The effective result removes the burn marks left from running the spindle into the work, allowing me to continue to cutting out the guitar body with Shapeoko 4 XL.

Once I finish my current projects, I’m hoping to do a longer start-to-finish CNC guitar series 🙂

Hi, how did you arrive at a .015 cut depth for the 6210 bit? Importing the tool database from whiteside into vectric lists a maximum cut depth of .25. i'm about to get my shapeoko and am trying to wrap my head around how to select proper feeds and speeds for the bits I'm getting. Thanks!

Hey Dustin...I think it's important to differentiate what's possible vs. what features Carbide Create has. In this case, because I wanted to "erase" this mistake, I only wanted to go down as far as I needed to but no further. Since I guessed it to be 0.1" to remove, I wanted to go in several passes. So by going .015 at a time, I could evaluate after each pass and stop if I didn't actually need to go as far as I estimated. I don't remember exactly, but I feel like I might've done 3-4 passes, and if so, then I took off 0.06 instead of 0.1.
To your actual question about the true maximum, the 6210 bit should have 0.25" of blade, so if you were going slow enough or the material was soft enough, then you could do that in one pass. So you can likely go MUCH deeper than I did, but for what I use this bit for, I'm never trying to surface anything that uneven.
      Thanks for watching!

Thanks for sharing. 30-45 minutes to take off .10"? That's kind of surprising.

From what I read, that bit isn’t meant for heavy cutting. So I went very shallow. It was about 10 mins per depth, so had I been a bit more aggressive, the time would’ve decreased accordingly
