Shapeoko xxl | Making My First Project In Carbide Create

- This is my first real cut with my new Shapeoko xxl, besides making the wasteboard and clamps which i downloaded the files for that. (Thanks to Ben Myers) “Myers Woodshop” for making those files available for download. This machine has a pretty big learning curve that comes with it. Its starting to make a little more since the more I play with the program. Hopefully I will have more projects coming in the future.

Don't apologize at all for anything you've done. I don't have a CNC (yet), so your "beginner steps" are very encouraging to a rank novice like I am!
I've been studying and learning cnc, I used one at my old job except it was a lathe. This video answered alot of questions for me. Thank you for sharing.

I'm a self taught woodworker, I've made a great deal of the furniture in our home, I'm also a crafter who enjoys working with paper (Silhouette Cameo & Brother scanncut), resin, etc... I'm super excited to get one of these to combine my hobbies. I also homeschool my girls so hoping they learn some CAD along the way with me... great job on your first project!

Great video and glad too see another XXL user out there. December will be two years with mine and I am still learning. You will go through a lot of trial and error (and materials) learning things but don't worry about it.
If I may suggest a way for you to save on time and headaches if you haven't figure it out as of yet. You saved each tool path with it's own gcode file. If you do all of the tool paths and then proof each one and are sure that they are good then save the tool paths as one gcode. This will cut down immensely on files and where you are storing them. If I have have more than one piece in a project (base, sign etc) then I save that project only to its own folder and then each gcode will be saved in the same folder. Everything is together. If you haven't started on acrylics yet you should consider it. It's another level of the cnc world alone from just wood. I am far from being a pro at this and I am always learning on this machine and program and I have received a lot of help from folks in the community. Thanks for the video and keep up the great work. One g code is all you need... just have multiple tool paths. The machine will prompt you for a bit change

Heads up, you do NOT need to save the G-Code 3 separate times. All you need to do is make sure the operations with the same bits are grouped together under toolpaths (aka the ones using the v-bits or whatever first, .125 inch bit second, and .25 inch third. Or whatever you’re using.) The machine will stop when its time for a bit change, go to the front of the table and you can change the bit from there.
To workflow like this you should have the bitsetter, otherwise using 3 different gcode files and zeroing after each bit change would be the proper way to do it.

Thanks for making the video. It was just what I was looking for. I am thinking about buying the Shapeoko XXL as well. The cutting area of this machine is just about perfect for what I will be doing with the machine. Unless there is something better around the same price that will have the same cut area? Did you ever get your crashing problem fixed? That kind of worried me to be honest.
Dennis Fawver I did, per everyone else the crash issue is interference. So I gave each part of the machine a dedicated circuit. I went about a month and didn’t use it then I had it loose connection a few times my first time back at it. Seems like the more you run it the better it is. But with that said I have a lot of things in my shop that can cause the interference. Nonetheless I still love the machine for the price!

I like it better than the xcarve. My buddy has one and it’s not as durable as the Shapeoko.
Great video I'm in the process of deciding on my first cnc will either be a shapeoko XXL or an xcarve. Couldn't help but notice the Virginia Tech hat. Do you live near Blacksburg? I live about 20 minutes from Tech campus.

You are right about the learning curve. My attempts at v carving letters are all manner of crazy. Each letter looks like the lines end in stars. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
May want to try different depths for your v carve. The new updated version is more complicated versus the old in my opinion. I still have to play around to get them just right.
What program are you running to design the sign for the cnc??

I honestly can’t remember, maybe 30 mins or less. At the time I really didn’t know what I was doing and the feeds and speeds were set at what carbide has them set at.

I manually moved the letters individually and placed them where I wanted them to go. It’s time consuming but it works lol

Which one is good? Openbuilds lead 1010 machine or shapeoko XXL
I haven’t seen the openbuilds in action. The only one I’ve fooled with is the Shapeoko so I can’t really give an opinion on that one.
What do you do regarding dust collection and noise reduction.
Russ Brenner Nothing really, ill start the machine and just walk away while it cuts. As far as dust collection, the carbide router while cutting blows the dust to the side. I just use the shop vac during the cut to suck up all the dust.
There is a graphic with generic speeds and feeds if you just google "shapeoko 3 speeds and feeds"! Should be on the carbide3d forum.
Also a spiral downcut bit would make it so you don't have to sand the surface. Just bought a Bosch one from lowes and its amazing.

You can curve letter in Inkscape which is a free program. I haven’t been able to figure it out myself so I do it the hard way. I literally move each letter and place it where I need it. I did do a video that shows this and here’s the link.

How'd you do the curve text for Popo's Woodworks

It could be that you haven’t loaded a file to carve yet. Once you initialize the machine then it will let you load your job or file that you are going to carve
Put mine together 8 months ago and scared to use it. I have a learning curb on new computer programs.
Princess Kitty I was the same way, the learning curve is steep. But once you get it it’s all down hill. It took me about a week of playing with It before I got comfortable with it. I destroyed more than I put out at first. You’ll get it, don’t be afraid of messing up. That’s part of learning! I made $3800 the first month I owned mine so it has paid for itself and then some. You have nothing to lose 👍🏻

Deprogram Minds The machine was around $1900, by the time you buy the router bits and everything you need you will probably be in it around $2400ish. But it’s a good investment and I made my money back the first couple months I had it 👍🏻
