- With optical stores closed due to the pandemic and the need of social distancing, I couldn’t get my broken glasses fixed. I decided to test out the power of learning from UA-cam videos to repair my glasses. I teach people how to repair furniture on my UA-cam channel, but in this video, I flip the tables and I show me as a student on UA-cam to learn how to fix my glasses. My hope is that this will help others repair their glasses at a time like this, but also demonstrate how you can watch a UA-cam video, get some supplies, and be successful at what you’re trying to learn. Just remember, failure is part of the learning process and keep trying!

About a week ago, the lens fell out of my semi-frameless glasses frame. I immediately called the optical store where I bought them, and they were closed due to the state of emergency we’re under in Ontario (April 2020) for the COVID-19 pandemic. All non-essential businesses are closed. So I taped my lens in the frame so I could see properly again.
I quickly got frustrated with my peripheral vision being blurred by the tape, so I thought “I can repair furniture, I wonder how hard it would be to repair my eye glasses?” I looked up how to repair glasses with a lens that popped out. I watched one video that was sort of helpful, but didn’t give me confidence to start the repair. Then I watched a video from the “eye talk” UA-cam channel and Kim Snyder walked through enough information that I wanted to try this repair.
After a little more research, I found out I needed 25 pound test monofilament fishing line (25 pound test refers to the thickness of the fishing line). I couldn’t just go out and buy it because the stores were closed so I found a spool on Amazon and ordered it. I patiently waited… well, not really… I was getting annoyed with my broken glasses. I was excited when the fishing line arrived on the doorstep - time go get into the workshop!
I filmed this repair for two reasons. One was to show the UA-cam “student” experience of trying to do something new after watching a few videos. I teach woodworking, furniture repair, and home improvement skills on my two UA-cam Channels - Fixing Furniture and Home Improvement Woodworking. I’m the teacher, sharing as much meaningful information as possible to help viewers be successful with their projects. I need to focus on sharing not only how to do something, but why, and film it in a way that makes sense to the viewers. I wanted to show in real time, how I handled tackling something I’ve never done before.
I also made this video to help others who want to repair their glasses but might be too intimidated by watching a professional repair glasses. I hope this helps at least one other person fix their glasses who may be in quarantine, where they’re not able to get to a store to fix them. Who knows, maybe this video will be so helpful, people will do these repairs by themselves going forward… ok, maybe that’s too optimistic. I think the hardest thing in fixing glasses - if you don't have a spare pair , and that is not being able to see what you are doing LOL

Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my friend Sam finally got astronomical results with it.

Thank you, this was very helpful. The way you broke it down and actually showed passes close up was fantastic. Got the pair restrung and a happy patient. This was my first restring, thanks for helping make it successful.
Once you have the length of fishing line known, trim it before putting the lens in.
And an easy way to set the length is to use the old piece of fishing line that broke.
When I repaired my glasses, I got the fishing line at my local Walmart. No need to wait for shipping. Just wait in line at the store ;)

Glad to see you being brave enough to show yourself trying something outside your wheelhouse - and failing a couple times before you get it right! That's how I am using UA-cam to learn new things. And I wear glasses, they are so darn EXPENSIVE.

As a glasses wearer I have learned to simply have multiple pairs. Expensive, but just necessary.
Furniture question - would love to see some fixing of drawers that don’t slide in and out of dressers. I know there are a bunch of different kinds but I have three dressers that needs help! Thanks for the great videos. All are very well done. Keep up the great work.

I've done this with long clothing tag barbs, the plastic bit that holds the tags on new clothes, I find a needle works better than tape
I checked yours after looking at another UA-cam video and the added part on yours is the monophilament line, replacement, however the trick is to use ribbon for the tool and work from inner to outer, so centre of glasses to outside. Excellent!

This why I always keep my last pair of glasses. I have them I my glove box so if my current glasses break while I am out, I can see well enough to drive home.
wish I had seen this video a year ago. Tryed the fishing trea thing, but didn't knew about the tape helping pulling. eden up in a mess with some glue :P anyway, still use them as backup in the shop ! Great job ! Martin from Quebec, Canada

A piece of ribbon could be used rather than tape.

thanks for the video, just tried it and it worked. My filament line was still attached but my lens popped out when the glasses fell to the floor. I had dental floss close by so I used that to pull the monofilament line up onto the indented ridge on the bottom perimeter of the lens instead of the folded over blue tape.

I've continued working, including fixing glasses, but thankfully we were never closed down completely, just limiting hours and services for a short time.
I had my full frame glasses break right above the nose pad solder is holding it together it's not a beautiful repair but an effective one for sure.

Beyond learning how to repair glasses, I also learned that some fixes take several tries and adjustments, all of which are part of the process. Now I think I have the courage to tackle my diy double door project.

Oh, no! If your glasses are semi-frameless like mine, it wasn't too difficult to fix them. The hardest part for me was getting the 25 lb test fishing line. Let me know if you have any questions... if you live near Brooklin, ON, I'm happy to share my fishing line with you. Scott
@@FixingFurniture Thanks for the offer to supply the line, but my glasses came apart where the bridge is brazed to the frame. Luckily I kept my old glasses, using them.

My partner once broke his glasses' frame on Christmas Eve evening, so simple, thinks I. I'll use Super Glue! It fixed the frame okay, but I got some glue on the lense. I'll clean it off with acetone, thinks I!. The lenses were optical plastic, not glass so he spent all Christmas with a fogged-up lense. The policy is to have a spare pair of glasses.

Somebody get this man one of those bench top magnifiers with the ring light people use for small electronics. He needs to see what he’s doing if his glasses break again.

I used a thin piece of plastic card to get under the lens wire. Just use something thin enough

My titanium frames broke 4 days ago after 8 years of use and 2 pairs of lenses. My attempt to fix them with CA gel ended up with my finger and thumb stuck together and CA on the lens. A total write off. Luckily I have an older pair that gets me by sort of and my optometrist just reopened this week so I was able to get in and order a new pair, unfortunately it will be 2 to 3 weeks before I get them so in the meantime it’s the really old glasses and lots of squinting.

I've been called Martha Julia McIver because of all the things I have figured out how to do even before UA-cam . Not trying to toot my own horn 🎺 but you have to learn to survive. I have taught my kids how to be McIvers' also and now they can't buy anything with out modifying it so it works again or it works better.

Maybe if the fish line doesn’t hold it’s possible to solder a L shape upside down. But than again maybe that (soldering) wil mess up the integrity of the lens or the frame.🤔

Question please - i have new Tommy Hilfiger semi-rimless glasses and my question is - on glass is solid and withot any movement, but left is with a little movement - it is nylon solid or little movement to frame is optional?

By the time I got through the chair I fix my brothers glasses
When I break my glasses I can fix them if I could see! It ends up me digging out old ones and getting out the magnifying glass
But what do you gotta do if u don’t have that plastic thing around the glasses?
Well then, you wouldn’t have this particular kind of glasses failure at all. And you would just super glue or epoxy a broken frame.

Buy a spare pair of glasses online (ex Zenni). It will cost you only $40-50. I’m literally blind without glasses so I don’t take any chance anymore 🙂

If you have access to your prescription always had luck with Zenni optical for backup glasses, always kept my pair from the optician as the primary pair but never could tell the difference between them and the ones I got from Zenni. (Then I got Lasik and was no longer an issue!)
