Classic Game Room reviews BATSUGUN for Sega Saturn from developer Toaplan, a 1993 SHMUP style arcade space ship shooter which found its way onto the Japanese Sega Saturn in 1996. Regarded as a bullet hell style shooter, Batsugan shares much in common with other Toaplan shooters such as Truxton and Fireshark with its straight forward 2D gameplay and crushing difficulty. This CGR review of Batsugun has gameplay from the Japanese Sega Saturn release of the vertical scrolling Saturn shooter Batsugun with videogame game play action.
Thank you Jose from NM for providing Mark with this game, which in turn has allowed him to provide us with this epic review.
For those still around this comment section and still curious about playing Batsugun: It, Truxton, Fire Shark and several other Toaplan games have recently made their way to Steam. All of them are the arcade versions and are emulated with pixel perfect precision!
They go for prices that are only a fraction of what the original arcade boards or some of the console ports from the 90s go for. And Batsugun also includes the exceedingly rare Special Edition of the game, which mixes up the colour palette and is generally a little easier. All games are also designed with the Steam Deck in mind (which is very much appreciated) and of course don't need increasingly rare and fickle retro consoles.
Jeez, Jose put up Batsugun AND Radiant Silvergun. The man is insane! Insane for CGR!
Oh my, one of my favourite shmups for the Saturn. Way underrated. Toaplan at their zenith.
that looks like so much fun. I love vertical shooters!!
Game over yeah!
Jose, the king of burned Sega Saturn games!
Thanks for the review! Been on the fence for this shmup awhile now due to its price and with so many other import saturn shmups in my collection, but will definitely pick this one up soon. Love the old school gameplay, graphics and music.
Jose from New Mexico seems to have an endless amount of nice classic games to give away..
It's Batsugun, It's lots of fun, It's number one and that's it, the review is done. :)
Kudos for pronouncing Toaplan correctly.
still have my dreamcast, but now I want a Saturn lol
Two options exist: José is either a.) loaded, or b.) a Time Cop who, knowing that Classic Game Room would eventually result in the salvation of all humankind, returned to the mid-'90s and started buying up all the Saturn games he could get his hands on.
Looks like fun, Jose is a great guy for donating!
Such awesome firepower. Looks so pretty.
I bet Jose must have a entire warehouse stocked full of old games and consoles!!!
Toaplan sure do know how to make great vertical shooters.
4Player Gigawing 2 is insane fun and gets pretty chaotic... And yes, two players is better than solo in shmups in general (some exceptions: R-Type, Gradius, Last Resort etc get eternal passes to awesome shmup-land). I guess the core shmup axiom is, "The more firepower brought to bear, the more funpower wrought to share."
I LOVED this game.
I'll have to try and track this down and give it a try if i find it
We should do a review on Jose, just for his overall badassness
@limaq
Iknow right?
I pray that he will never ever change the themesong.
It just makes me happy :D
Jose is a LEGEND!
it's batsugan
it's lots of fun
and i think the review is done
@OctalLord
yeah. Those two guys must be loaded. Not many people would give away their Saturn collection. But hey, it gives Mark fodder for more awesome reviews.
we live jose, he make mike happy
@4PeacexDarkness some call these shmups(shoot em ups)they can also be called bullet hell shooters
@warlord1212
This was the first bullet hell-game ( if you don't count Recca's Zanki-mode ).
Jose, Jose, he's our man!
If he can't do it, no one can! :D
The thing I like about Mark is that he treats all games with an equal eye. Most other yuppie reviewers would be complaining about the difficulty of this game. Then they would say it is too short all the while credit feeding the living hell out of it.
Toaplan Forever
Why does batsugun sound so good on the saturn? the arcade versions sound seems to lack bass or something while shooting enemies and the music also has way too much trebble. I will be importing a saturn just to play this game..emulators simply dont do it justice.
This has got to be one of the most satisfying and jaw dropping games I’ve ever played. I’m in love.
Review Jose he deserves it!
Hi, what's the tune being played in intro during the "Classic Game Room HD" sign with the red background (from 0:09 to 0:17 in this video).
Thanks in advance!
Nice review
Jose from Arizona who had to move into New Mexico!
at 2:39 the music is so wicked..
Yep, its by some of the same dudes who are in CAVE.. In Donpachi (CAVEs first game) the names in the high scores spell out "Toaplan forever" (the company behind this and a few other old gems) - they also have the whole bee/wasp/hornet thing going on here..
I love Batsugun
@TakeMeToYourLeaderZ Thank you!
If only I had Saturn AV cords I could play this game.
I have a saturn with ton of shmups, but now I want a dreamcast for couple notable shmups.
awesome game, and the music is great!
ok i randomly saw this video on the youtube opening page and i am going to write this before i see this i am going to bet a subscription that he is going to like tis game
I think jose should get his own video!
Wondering if Jose has like a warehouse in mexico full of games and old consoles!!!
This game looks awesome!
awesomeness
@LuminousPath13 Bwahahahaha! Man, what a way to put it.
Everyone has different tastes.
I prefer RS to a lot of shooters precisely because it seems to be unique - I haven't seen any game with seven shot types, nor bosses like the ones that game has. However this game looks pretty cool and I'd get it if I had the money to.
But eh, he runs the show, he makes you laugh. Give him a break.
... I can't defend him if we mention Cosmic Carnage, though.
thanks jose.
there will be a time when you are more famous than that guy who makes this show...what was his name again? ah screw him. JOSE YOU'RE THE MAN!
They should get rid of the thumbs down buttons on videos, on youtube!!!!
Can someone explain to me why all these shooters are so damn expensive? Doesn't matter what system its on, shooter games are always way overpriced. Which doesn't make sense because when you get right down to it, all these games are technically the same.
+SonGara There are a few good reasons why shooters end up fetching relatively high prices.
Shooting games are very repayable, especially if you are aiming for a one credit clear (1CC). A 1CC is when you are aiming to complete an entire game (or a single loop) within one credit, usually with default arcade settings. This goal can take anywhere from a couple months to many years.
It's important to note, also, that there is still quite an active community of people aiming to achieve a high score on many of these games, which naturally will take even longer than the coveted 1CC.
People who enjoy shooters are willing to pay what these games are going for, and this is because people who enjoy shooters are usually either playing for score, or that 1CC.
Let me assure you that if you are interested in vertical shooters, the price you may pay for Batsugun is absolutely warranted, especially if you are just getting into the genre. In my opinion, it is the perfect game for someone excited to get into shmupping, as it has a simple scoring mechanic, a forgiving difficulty, and a taste of what makes both modern bullet hells fun, as well as the tried and true formula of the 90s arcade classics.
Batsugun will keep you entertained for many, many hours, granted you are willing to put up with some of the potentially frustrating tenants of arcade gaming. If you want to get your money's worth from Batsugun, be prepared to spend a lot of time doing the same thing. It may sound repetitive, in theory, but you will actually spend much of your time improving each time you play. This is a VERY rewarding feeling. Many people unfamiliar with arcade gaming may feel the impulse to "credit feed" until the end. While there is no wrong way to have fun, this is a bit misguided. Challenge yourself and really go for that 1CC.
This is, admittedly, not for everyone. But I can't stress enough: the rewarding feeling of achieving a 1CC is something special.
If you are still interested in getting into shooters, but you're not quite ready to break the bank for Batsugun, try out Donpachi or Strikers 1945. Niether are quite as well suited to a beginner (especially Strikers), but they should serve as an indication of if the genre suits you.
I hope that answers your question!
+lightsouthaha +SonGara The main factor for Saturn shmups increased value has to do with the limited options for playing these games. For example, the reason Batsugun's value is so expensive is that the only other way to play this game arcade-perfect is to spend $999 on the arcade PCB (which will require another $500+ for a supergun setup) and emulation is still broken, so the Saturn version actually comes out cheaper and then some. I bought my copy back in 2009 for $79, now I can resell it for 3x that because there is still a demand for arcade-perfect, non-emulated Saturn ports.
lightsouthaha Wow, man! Well said, you nailed it. Myself, personally, I am 75% collector/25% player these days so I have no desire to put my games back on the market. I am not looking to get rich or cash out, I just like knowing when I get the itch for some classic '90's 2D arcade action I can scratch it. I came up on the arcade scene and remember being in love with the Saturn back in the '90's, but lacked the funds and resources to get these games.
lightsouthaha Naaah, chief, you didn't lose me, I just think we're in an era where it feels weird to look at games we grew up on as "high-dollar" collectibles when, to us, they're just GAMES.
lightsouthaha
I'm sorry about the housefire, chief. I didn't mean for it to come off like I was bragging about Batsugun, and I totally get your earlier point about the intrinsic value of shmups vs. what the use market is valuing them at these days.
For example, Radiant Silvergun is a bad joke. I tell people all the time NOT to buy that game on eBay if they want to play it. That game is soooooo overrated and its a shame the market has not corrected itself to reflect that. Not only that, but it is emulated to a playable degree, and its on Xblive and whathaveyou. Even back in the day when people were saying it was "oh-so-rare", I was calling bullshit on it. It is not rare because it had a low print run-it is rare because sellers bought up a bunch of them, and released them back to the market at inflated prices. That shit pisses me off, greedy assholes who manipulate the market to jack up the prices for used games, and I am not the type to just call someone greedy.
Judging from the bee I see between rounds, could this be a precursor to Dodonpachi?
I usually hear that this game was origin of what started the bullet-hell shooter sub-genre and was the inspiration for the Donpachi - Dodonpachi series.
Word up Jose!
Epicness
😂🤣 ITS BATSUGUN THATS IT THE REVIEW IS DONE ^^
LOVELY RIME :) 😃😄
I call these type of games:
Shoot everything until you don't you don't give a shit anymore.
@HornetFellow He sure does
I like shooting games!!!!!!!
Some games are somewhat valueable now!!! Einhander is $40 on ebay, and is a PS1 game!!! Remember, dont get rid and sell of old video games, they may be worth money in the future!!!
Damn that Jose from New Mexico.
Batsugun is rarer than Silvergun, but RSG was so over hyped ppl jacked the prices right up on eBay.
@ryanc519 He donated this game to CGR. :D
finally another shmup, whe want more shoot em ups!
@blacksixspeed He has it already, brother.
@bleedingxxaurora

Reminds me of touhou games :)
was that the guy from comix zone?
In my opinion Toaplan had the most beautiful sprites of any shmup company. Not to mention incredibly detailed backgrounds and high difficulty. Toaplan was the best...
Giga Wing is still the best.
@OmegaDeman
I hope you aren't serious about that,
The chance of having a seizure is EXTREMELY low
