    As a tofu hater 😅 I have to say that part of it is when it’s in a square that puts me off lol but I’ve found when I tear it into pieces, the texture feels less like an over cooked egg I guess because it has more surface area to brown? But just a note for other tofu skeptics lol
    Can we also get some more tempeh recipes in the future?? Love your recipes and love tempeh so that would be a great combo!

    With sweet and sour if you want a thicker sauce more similar to from a takeaway pop the ingredients in a separate pan and once they’re bubbling add a cornflour slurry (cornflour mixed with water) and it will thicken up and have that more orange-y colour 😊

    I went from tofu-curious to a tofu lover in just few months and I'm excited to try these recipes! My ultimate tofu trick is to freeze it first - it lets out so much water when defrozing and it is super easy to press. Yum!

    A well-seasoned cast iron pan works as well as a non-stick, will last a lifetime, and is better for the environment! Non-sticks need to be replaced every few years

    My favorite way to prepare tofu when putting it into a saucy stirfry is to marinate in salt, pepper, and a bit of oil and soy sauce after it's diced. Then I toss it with corn flour and bake at around 180C for 20 minutes or so - it makes the tofu a bit drier which means it soaks up more of the sauce and has a bit of a chewier texture than when pan fried 😋

    After cooking the smoked tofu, how long can I keep it in the fridge and how do you best store it? After cooking, can the tofu burger be frozen for later use?

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  Рік тому +2

      I would store it in an air-tight container for 2-3 days. And yes it can be frozen!

      @addamhewitt Рік тому +10

      Well I've been vegan for 3 years and love tofu. If you think tofu makes a man girlie, then that's your opinion. My opinion is it takes a real man to show empathy, to show kindness, and to care enough to eat tofu instead of meat. But if you think I'm a soy boy, then a soy boy I am, and bloody proud to be aswell.

    I can't wait to try these recipes, they look so good! Two things I thought when watching. First, the tofu press. Make sure the pressure is applied like the one in the video. I made the mistake of buying a visually similar unit except mine has four flaps that are part of the top. They are so difficult to catch on the sides when there's a block of tofu in there, which is the entire point. Second, I always freeze my tofu first, even for a tofu scramble. It give the tofu a pleasing texture, preferable for a texture-eater like myself.

  • @cheeckychicken
    @cheeckychicken Рік тому +2

    Hi, being fairly new to trying to eat more plant based meals I'm curious as to how much tofu you allow per person. I've looked at the blocks but they come in different sizes so some guidance would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

    • @lilajohnson4633
      @lilajohnson4633 Рік тому

      I personally eat about 100-125g of tofu per serving, usually as a stirfry so there are other veggies and rice with it as well 😊

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  Рік тому

      If having it as a main part of the dish about half a block is good for one person! Most blocks are about the same amount - 400g or so. I usually put in one block for me and alex. For example in tofu scramble where the tofu is the main event. If it’s a dish with lots of other veg and things going on then a block would serve four, because you’re making up for it with other ingredients! But having said all of that, if you’re trying to eat high protein then upping the volume of tofu is a good way to get extra in!

    I love your videos and recipes but I am so tired of white vegan/vegetarian chefs/influencers appropriate and "elevate" food from POC. Tofu was not invented by white vegans/vegetarians, or as a meat alternative for them. Tofu can taste good without pressing or marinating in BBQ sauce.

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  Рік тому +1

      I hear you but I hope I don’t come across as trying to imply I invented tofu or am trying to take anything away from POC. I love tofu in all its forms and love to share the many ways that we can enjoy it. It’s great if you’re vegan and vegetarian or a meat eater, and of course it has been eaten for centuries by meat eaters. I am coming from the point of view as a vegan remember, so it’s a staple in my diet to get enough protein and nutrients. It’s delicious and has so many ways to cook that I simply wish to share this ❤️ I just want those who haven’t tried it, or haven’t enjoyed it, to find a way to include it in their diet if they’re trying to eat more plant based foods

      @@MadeleineOlivia Thank you so much for replying, it means a lot to me. You helped me become fully vegan (2 years!) and like I said, I love your contents. I hope you didn't think I was personally attacking you. It's just frustrating to see so many white chefs/influencers capitalize off of appropriating food and ingredients from other cultures and (unintentionally) make their followers believe that "tofu is bland" or is "a meat alternative." I once brought homemade mapo tofu for lunch (I was a meat eater then) and my white vegetarian colleague came up to me and told me that "it defeats the purpose of eating tofu (if I cook it with meat)." I unsubscribed one of my favorite UA-camrs this year because I heard her say "I know tofu is the most hated protein IN THE WORLD but I can show you how to make it taste better" in one of her videos :( I hope more of you would collaborate with vegan chefs from other cultures and explore their cuisine that way (and not in the manner of a White Savior).

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  Рік тому +2

      I am so happy that I helped you to go vegan! Of course didn't think you were personally attacking me, I truly appreciate the feedback. I would absolutely love to collaborate with vegan chefs from other cultures, but unfortunately I haven't ever collaborated with any other vegan chefs at all! I can blame it on being very busy, and also living where I do in Cornwall that this has happened, but I would love to collaborate more in the future! I personally have never thought tofu bland, or as simply a meat alternative. I absolutely love tofu, and cooking with tofu, so naturally that'll show up in my videos. I adore foods from all over the world, and it is what inspires me to create how I do. I view it as my artistic expression. I really do love how foods from other cultures such as tofu are now available to us in the UK, in a way maybe they weren't years ago. Because now we get to enjoy them too! I really hope that this is the way my videos and recipes come across, and you can understand where I am always coming from. Appreciation, rather than appropriation.
