As someone who sweats fairly heavily, a completely waterproof jacket is a guarantee that I'm going to be soaked from the inside. I've had little success with breathable jackets even at moderate efforts. I don't focus on staying dry but rather on staying warm. I use jackets more for wind proofing, to minimize the cooling effect. I use various weight Merino wool tops to keep my core warm even when I get wet, and especially Merino wool socks to keep my feet warm, because as Coach Morgan said, it's inevitable they get wet. (Wear the shoes with the best wet grip as well - not all soles have the same traction when wet). My goal is to avoid hypothermia, in the rain or in the snow.

If it's warm enough, which varies by person, just embrace getting soaked to the bone; it's not going to kill you. But below about 45F & raining, I usually put on a light rain/wind jacket shell, hat, and waterproof socks. Speaking of which... Showers Pass makes the best breathable WP sock, which I find better than SealSkinz. It's also wool-lined, so if water does seep in from above it'll still feel warm-ish and won't stink as much later. Kind of expensive at ~$50, but cheaper than having two kinds of shoes.

I second embracing the wet! I find that the one thing I can't do without in the rain is a visor to keep the rain out of my eyes, and waterproof gloves because I have mild Reynaud's. Down to about 10°C I find that a truly waterproof jacket is more of a liability -- it may keep the rain out, but it also keeps the heat AND THE SWEAT in! Unless it's really cold and windy I'd rather just get rained on. And let's face it, if you're doing it right you aren't coming home dry either way. 😂

Rain jackets are useless cause you will get drenched in sweat anyway. Go shirtless, it's feels great, try it. I'll still wear a hat to reduced rain in my eyes.

@@thespecialone7632 Mostly useless, yes. But on a long run in freezing rain, notsomuch.

Randy Sun, claims to make breathable windproof, waterproof socks but I haven't tried them. Cuteness overload with that pup.

  • @robinmitchell1109

There are waterproof socks for runners that work really well. Merino wool socks dry much faster and help a lot. Trail (or hybrid) shoes drain more quickly and have better grip. If you know you are doing long runs in the rain prepare your feet with Vaseline or other stuff as wet feet rub more. Gortex shoes are good if you don’t submerge your feet. You can use gaiters to stop rain getting in your shoes but again, not if submerged. Rain jackets have different levels of waterproofing and breathability so need to check carefully. Some rain jackets expand at the back so they can go over a pack which helps as well.

I'm in the seattle area and i enjoy running in tights and shorts, then wool socks (like darn tuff), and then i wear a reflector with lights on it because visibility is always good haha. i'm heading over to the winter video now, something i struggled with last year! great info

I have a pair of waterproof trail shoes, and they will keep my feet dry but arent good to run on asfalt roads.
And as previously mentioned; a completly waterproof jacket will make you sweat like crazy, so you need a shirt that will transport the sweat away.
And I think your dog just made your cap a bit more breathable... 🤣

Love your point about puddles. Just let it happen and get wet. I have a half marathon race on Nov 6th and forecast says rain and I know it will also be chilly. My first race in the rain. I just bought a Janji RainRunner. I want to do this the right way and keep warm and not so wet. I was going to spray my shoes but decided not too. Thank you for a very informative video and love your puppy.

Continental rubber on sole so you’re confident you won’t slip. Peaked cap, keep hands warm and avoid having to stop at traffic lights wherever possible so you don’t get cold.

For waterproof shoes, I just go with a "gore-tex membrane" pair of trail shoes for wet/winter conditions. Keeping my feet pretty much dry and still being breathable.
Of course when it´s pouring down or one steps in deep puddles, the water will still enter from the top of the shoe anyway.

I've had my fair share of races in the rain😅🌧🏃‍♂️ . Wet feet is bad, but also your running shoes are going to need plenty of time to completely dry, even if you stuff them with paper or whatever. Hopefully where I live it doesn't rain the whole week, so I can go to the swimming pool that day and then run the next day.

Speaking from rainy England, completely waterproof running gear is pointless. Firstly, fully waterproof coats won't breath fast enough and you'll end up soaked in sweat. Secondly, if it's raining that much your legs, feet, face, neck & chest will get wet anyway. Man up ffs!

For anyone who is curious. I have waterproof vessie's for work and they're great for relatively sedentary wet activities, they're waterproof and breathable, however they completely suck ergonomically and my feet hurt after just going for a 40 min - 1 hr walk, so I would never recommend them for running.
