- Michigan is Mackinac Island. This popular tourist destination may be a familiar sight to many Michiganders, but it is home for 500 year-round residents, who see an entirely different side of Mackinac than most tourists.

One of these winters where/when the ice bridge is good, I'm riding my Fat Bike from St Ignace to the Island for an overnight stay. Great times and smiling faces! Plus, Ann Arbor's own Brian Bailey!
I’m proud to say that I played basketball against the Mackinac Island Lakers when I attended Whitefish Township School in Paradise, Michigan. The gentleman named Andrew Doud was one of my competitors. He was a great basketball player! He could dribble and shoot the ball like nobody’s business. He made a vast improvement from his 8th Grade year to his 9th Grade year. On the court we were serious. Off the court we had good times. I’m so glad that I came across Andrew on You Tube!!!!
I would love to live there!!!! But where do they work to make a living in the winter?
Love it💖
Question for the residents .. Don't you have to be nearly a millionaire to be able to afford to live there?
It would be funny if they had cars hidden away in secret garages that they pulled out and drove all Winter. But then when the tourists arrived, it's all horses and quaintness.
Why in the world are snow machines allowed? They are noisier and smellier than cars? If everyone is getting around in the summer why does it change in the winter?
For people who live on the Island year-round, it's impossible to get around without them. There's typically at least a foot of snow throughout the winter, and some very steep hills from the docks and downtown up to many homes. During tourist season, no cars maintains a quaint ambiance and adds to the tourist draw, since cyclists essentially have the roads to themselves. But once winter hits and the vacationers are gone, snowmobiles are a necessity!
Visited in April and it was the most dreary dull uneventful place I've ever been. you've been warned about the off-season.
This is amazing. I was fortunate enough to be an employee with Brian Bailey at the Chippewa Hotel for four years. It was a pleasure. He ran a terrific business.
Spent a week there last September. Great experience. They say there are about 600 horses in the summer. Grand Hotel was magnificent, they serve a buffet lunch, dinner that was great.
Went for spring break in 2019 really wanted to go to the island but the wife was too afraid to fly in a small plane. Coming back when the ferrys are running for sure. I may move to mackinaw city when I retire.
Spent some time in St. Ignace and the Soo, very cold and desolate in winter ❄️.
I was there years ago. So serene and beautiful
does it mean 500 people only?
Yes. Only around 500 live there year round. A lot of tourists and people may stay there during the Summer.
