This video brings back great memories. I grew up in Paradise, MI. My school in Paradise was Whitefish Township School. We played basketball, quiz bowl, and volleyball against Mackinac Island. For basketball, we stayed in Mackinac Island’s gym. We used sleeping bags. After the basketball games, we went to the dances. I made friends from Mackinac Island that way. Many great people come out of Mackinac Island.
I was a teacher in an inner city school for over 20 years. Of course a school in a small area will work because they focus more on the students! Smallerl areas tend to care more about their children's education!
Man my heart goes out to you . For years now I've been hearing more and more former teachers talking about why they gave it up ; especially in the city because the kids just didn't have respect for the teachers . I hope that wasn't your experience , though .
Mr. Wasso shedded some light on a person who grew up in Paradise, Michigan like me. For many years I thought that all schools had dances with each other. I remember going to the dances after the basketball games. During those times I didn’t know that the wonderful experiences were unique. Mr. Wasso’s words made me grateful for the wonderful and unique experiences! I’m proud that I had those unique experiences!!
Absolutely love Mackinac Island. Although I grew up in Grand Rapids, I've been on the island several times over the years. I now live in Tampa, FL and can tell you that Mackinac Island is one or our nation's great untold secrets and getaway spots. The fall colors there are without parallel and the fudge they make in the main-street shops is the best you ever had!
I have autism, and I only went there twice, but I love it. First time I went was 13 years ago, I went with an old friend from high school who worked for the ferry business, and we went to a restaurant on Market Street, which is pretty much Main Street for the village, and we even hiked on the street too and went back to the mainland. Second time was actually earlier this summer, it was with my parents, we rented bikes and circled one lap around the island, went to some different restaurant I went to, and visited shops on the street and left for the mainland. Next fall will be my third time, with my parents again for another bike ride around the island just to see fall colors. But spring is my favorite time of year because of the blossoms on the trees, and some beautiful ground flowers too, and there's also lots of time left in the year before you have to deal with bad winter weather again, and last night when I went to bed and fell asleep, I dreamed that I was riding my bike on the island.
Flatlander but fell in love with your island when we visited many years back. Had a room above a fudge shop and ahhh the aroma. (Fudge, my second love. My first love are horses). I loved hearing the clippity clop during the day but especially at night. We had hoped to visit again, but life has a way of making changes we don't anticipate. Maybe one day I'll get to enjoy the best fudge ever made and hear that clippity clop during a quiet evening.
Absolutely great job. Thank you, always wanted to see the winter in Mackinaw. Now, I know we can visit. Would be a great experience. 🍻 God Bless Everyone
I've been going to Michigan for vacation since I was born. Crossed the bridge many times and went to the island a few times. Absolutely beautiful up there.
I served on the Coast Guard cutter Mackinac, there was another cutter in the Great Lakes called the Mackinaw, the island is named Mackinac, believe the straits of water are the Mackinaw, 'ac' vs 'aw', a little like Smith and Smyth, eh?
Numerous visits over the years, most memorable was a three-day weekend at the Grand Hotel with my young bride. Cool watching the work maintaining the island.
My girlfriend lived on the island for two years, said it was an amazing place to stay. Make sure you don't just hover around market Street. There is so much more to see.
Lived in Michigan all my life. Michigan is absolutely beautiful in winter time. Up until the *cough* hit us, there were so many things to do and see in the winter...Traverse City Tip up Festival is just one of many...sigh...
@@yourfavoritepolarislander1460 I would love to be able to see the place in the winter time . Would you know by any chance if any of the hotels are open in the winter and have a fireplace ? Geraniums!!! That is one of the many beautiful things about this island that I remember from my one, all too short, vacation there one August in the mid- ‘80s. Very pleasant memories. :) AND, I’m pretty sure that the hostess is from Angola, Indiana.
My mum ,Janet McCombie whom I am named loved the movie ' somewhere in time's and made an exact replica of the character Jane Seymour played . It was the white tea length dress with the white elbow gloves- 5 inches tall and perfect. Antique lace . Mum worked on the dress over 3 years searching for antique lace and fabric. The doll itself was designed by Cathy Hanson . I'm mentioning all these details because my beloved mum passed away 11 years ago on Oct 18th . I'm an only child and mum had fond memories of the island and went to nursing school in Highland park in the 1950s. She wanted me to visit but I fear I'm too late. Covid has changed our lives forever and I believe our world is going to see even more. I want to donate mums special creation to the Grand Hotel. Maybe someone can contact me ? I miss mum so much.
They have a ''somewhere in time'' festival each year celebrating in a period correct attire...my heart goes to you, miss my mom too, I too have a doll from my mother that has been in the family since the early 1800's, I often wonder what to do with it when I go home. Maybe, you could write the grand hotels management and ask if they'd be interested in that beautiful doll...the worst that could happen is you will get to keep your mothers beautiful creation, and that's not a bad thing.
Janet McCombie How beautiful that you have such a precious memento of your beloved mother. I spent my honeymoon at the Grand Hotel during the “Somewhere in Time” special weekend that is usually in late October. We got married on 17th October. It is such a beautiful island and we loved our stay there. Had hope to go back for our 25th but wasn’t to be. I've been fascinated with this place since I was a young kid. I would love to spend Summers there because I'm in Georgia and it gets hot here as it gets cold there in the winter but no way I would spend the winter there or anywhere in Michigan. Today is the beginning of the second week of November and I'm in a bathing suit working in my garden at 8:30 AM. I don't like cold weather at all.
Went in July 1992 - first time in 20+ years, said natives, that several nights dipped into freezing temps 🥶 and during the days high 40s to low 50s. We had to buy jackets! Beautiful vacation otherwise.
Visited the island a few years ago, what a neat place. If you wanted to walk around the Grand Hotel they charged $10. I gladly paid and it was worth every penny, amazing place with the worlds largest front porch. And I have to say, the reporter is a real cutie!
I've been to the island a couple of times. The one thing I always wanted to know is how do the people get their groceries to the island? They don't have a Kroger or a Walmart store to shop 🤔.
Also people can shop off island and just take the ferry back, and don't forget Amazon! You can get it delivered but it will cost you! But most familys just have a very well stocked pantry that they rely on during the long winter.
I don't think I saw anybody wearing a mackinaw in the entire piece. Maybe I wasn't paying attention. I discovered these heavy wool jackets rather late in life. If you're out moving/working/hunting in the cold, they're tough to beat, and for hunting, they're silent, you won't melt a hole in them from a stray spark around the camp fire, they breathe, they shed water, ...
Why? A person who likes to use the "toys" of snowplowing vehicles, check out the snowplowing at the National Parks here in the United States. One example is the "Going to the Sun Road" in Glacier National Park, Montana. On the "Big Drift Area" it has been as much as 90 FEET deep of snow and rock debris from avalanches. That's just from one winter season.
For people pushing a wheel chair in the snow has to be ruff living in snow plus the metal wheelchair is colder than what people don't know it's reverse in the summer time the metal from the wheelchair gets hotter than what any one else feels.
Enjoyed biking around it a few times last year when we took our UP trip. We found the construction dock and lots of tire tracks from there into the back roads, so we figured they allowed construction vehicles on some roads.
Curious about shopping for groceries, gas for the snowmobiles, feed for the horses, and are there any restaurants open for the residents? Is there a doctor or a pharmacy, etc?
I lived on the island and it was the experience of a lifetime. I would fax my shopping list to the IGA in St. Ignace and a shopper would assemble my order. Then fly it over and deliver it to my doorstep. I would mail them a check and they would fax me another order sheet (s). Each category on the sheets would offer the different choices in each food like...Jif, Skippy, Peter Pan...then crunchy or creamy and I just circled my choice. It was amazing and so convenient.
During 5he deep winter they would create an ice road from St.Ignace to the Island...they formed the road using Christmas trees after Christmas and lined the road so that in a whiteout situation you don't go out into The Lake. They use a track machine pulling a sled full of hay for the horse stables. One year the man that was first across to line the road and last across when ice breaker would reopen shipping lanes...he was bringing a load of hay across and went across a bubble under the ice and the whole rig went through. They eventually found the machine but he was not in it. The currents between Huron and Michigan are very strong and they figured he was carried off in the current. The waters are hundreds of feet deep in that area.
They have all of the necessary municipal departments in Mackinaw Island and I believe a State Police Post as well. Small hospital also. They allow motorized vehicles for police and fire and in some cases you can get permits for construction equipment like a dozer or loader. Debris from demo is taken to barges where they haul it off or deliver loads of materials to the Island and then Drays (wagons) are loaded and teams of Percherons (Clydesdale type horses) pull them to their destination. Awesome old school man power does the rest.
Just catch a plane over from St. Ignace. Or if the boats are running, go over and go door knocking. Construction crews everywhere. I would introduce myself and describe your experience in the trades. More than likely with proper background checks, someone needs you. The biggest obstacle for you would be housing. You're probably going to have to hotel it on the mainland, Mackinaw City or St. Ignace, Or do a short term rental also on the mainland. Most companies will pay for your daily boat fees if you are experienced and good worker. Since most contractors come from mainland, you might check internet or local paper for want ads. Good luck.
Yoosta be a yooper. The island was always awesome. I was there last in 2019 after the Macinac Bridge walk and was disappointed. Employees on the island were like begging for tips no matter what they did. Didn't used to be that way. Decided then I would not go back. P.S. a yooper is someone who grew up in the Upper Peninsula.
Once a Yooper, always a Yooper. I was born in Marquette, Michigan. Even though I live in Chicago, I still think of myself a Yooper. I hope that you think of yourself as a Yooper too.
What do you think has changed that the workers all over the island were begging for tips ? I mean , yes , the economy has been getting bad ... even before covid . Can you explain a little bit more ... do you mean every counter you were at , had the tip jar ? ... and that it didn't always used to be like that ?
During the winter time Mackinac Island is vulnerable to theft. When I worked for the State Police years ago come to find out they actually stole the huge chandelier from the Grand Hotel. Like you would not be that is possible.
I guess that hotel is closed in the winter ? I mean how else could they have stolen a massive chandelier ? Were they ever able to find it or the theives ? or no . I would love to see that island in the winter and stay at that hotel . I think it would be cool if they had horse-drawn sleigh rides in the snow . Can you tell us anything else he said about thievery there ?
@@gardensofthegods -- Thanks for the follow-up. The chandelier theft was literally nearly five decades ago. To my understanding the chandelier was never recovered. The bigger mystery was how in the heck did the thieves get it off the island? AND where did it end up? I can’t imagine a pawnshop willing to accept it; but who knows? Hardly a big enough mystery to write a book about or dedicate your life to investigating. But . . . . the answers are somewhere likely hanging high or embarrassingly up in someone’s barn.

The only car ever allowed on the island was for one shot in the movie when they show him in today’s time arrive today the Grand Hotel. Best love story movie ever. Watch it with your Wife/ GF.
@@badapple65, the police chief and the fire chief have their respective vehicles to use on the island. It's been than way to back to the 1950's, or the 1940's, etc to whenever.
Snowmobiles allowed, are scooters or motorcycles allowed in warm weather? It’s hard to tell now days if a bicycle is electric or not that could work right?
Why dont they put construction workers up at the hotel, that they are working on?? It seem like a waste of time, effort, money to get them back forth on a boat.

What happened to business this year due to COVID? Just curious. I used to live in Michigan.
Looks like paradise to me
Very nice to see these conditions still exist.
Such a bubbly personality she has
I've been there one time back in 2019 it was a beautiful experience!
Visited the island a few years ago, what a neat place. If you wanted to walk around the Grand Hotel they charged $10. I gladly paid and it was worth every penny, amazing place with the worlds largest front porch.
And I have to say, the reporter is a real cutie!
I love the island. have always wanted to cross the ice bridge. one of these years
Its not always safe to do so. I never recommend it to tourist. Most locals don't. The only people that advertise it is news channels.
I've been to the island a couple of times. The one thing I always wanted to know is how do the people get their groceries to the island? They don't have a Kroger or a Walmart store to shop 🤔.
Ken Blackburn Family owned market in town and I suspect some have gardens. Everything has to come by plane or ship.
Also people can shop off island and just take the ferry back, and don't forget Amazon! You can get it delivered but it will cost you! But most familys just have a very well stocked pantry that they rely on during the long winter.
Hit the IGA in St Ignace
Hi friend! You have a wonderful channel & I totally came to support you♥️♥️♥️♥️
great video, nice narrative
I’d love to live this way but🇨🇦 , looks great to me still ! 🤓
It’s THE BEST in the winter. Everybody is MUCH friendlier in the winter.
Looks great!
If this young lady is an example of Michigan ladies, I'm ALL in! What a beauty!
A very very pretty girl.
Wow, haven’t been there in the winter since the 1980 or so. Seems like things have changed a bit.
Can you please tell us and what why you think it's changed since the 80s ?
Fudge. Nobody said anything about the fudge!
Have to wait for spring for fudge.
Or taffy
Pasties up in Naubinway...yummy!
Went there 40 years ago with my little girl, who now she’s 49
I lived in Armada MI for 6 yrs. Was kinda like am island. Other than my wife, people were kool!
Absolutely love the island would love to live there anybody go to work pick me
The school looks fun!!
Just when I thought that it wouldn't get better.
why is youtube suddenly recommending this to someone like me from the Caribbean lol. Seems like a cool place though :)
Road plow for Mackinac Island sounds like a DREAM gig
@@exmichigansnowskier2150 wow that's crazy ... 90 ft. snowdrifts .
@@exmichigansnowskier2150 you've got some bizarre aggression there.
For people pushing a wheel chair in the snow has to be ruff living in snow plus the metal wheelchair is colder than what people don't know it's reverse in the summer time the metal from the wheelchair gets hotter than what any one else feels.
Pretty, Young Lady. 😁
Enjoyed biking around it a few times last year when we took our UP trip.
We found the construction dock and lots of tire tracks from there into the back roads, so we figured they allowed construction vehicles on some roads.
Rubber tired wagons’ tracks?
Frank Dillingsly that’s amazing - how creatively convenient!
Frank Dillingsly pretty scary to know when the ice road is safe and not safe.
Lovely for the visitors but a tough place to live. Expensive for everyone.
Somebody did say it's expensive to live there
" You sorta have to get along" Pretty much how one lives in the UP!
I want to go there this weekend
I'd like to work there over the winter. Does anyone know how I could work there
Just catch a plane over from St. Good luck.
So did you get a job there?
Men marry women with the hope they will never change. Women marry men with the hope they will change. Invariably they are both disappointed
its a give and take arrangement, just don't take more than you can handle, 33 years and we are very happy that way
Awesome environment.
Hallo very nice 👍👍
Clicked because I saw Maniac Island. Still cool
Patrick R “Maniac” island. HAHA, was that an intentional slam??
Thanks for your explanation.. good job.. sw Michigan grandpa type guy..
Jenny Dushell? Is that the correct name of the host? She is terrific!
Me when I see a motor vehicle on the island: wait-
ThAtS iLlEgAl!
I loved my trip to Mackinaw Island 🌴
It's Mackinac genius, not Mackinaw...
@@dansmolen1618 genius...lmfao.....its both...they spell it both ways...look it up genius....certainly makes you look like a foolish idiotic dumb dumb!!!
Actually it is Mackinac. Then there is Mackinaw city. Same word spelled differently specifically for 2 different cities.
I’m from Texas, never heard of this town, not sure why it’s own my feed, but seems like a fantastic place! I would love to visit some day
It’s beautiful in summer
Have you seen the movie “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour? Filmed there at the Grand Hotel. The only car ever allowed on the island was for one shot in the movie when they show him in today’s time arrive today the Grand Hotel. Best love story movie ever. Watch it with your Wife/ GF.
It's a great place to visit
@@badapple65, the police chief and the fire chief have their respective vehicles to use on the island. It's been than way to back to the 1950's, or the 1940's, etc to whenever.
Is this where the Mackinaw Peach got its name?
Snowmobiles allowed, are scooters or motorcycles allowed in warm weather? It’s hard to tell now days if a bicycle is electric or not that could work right?
In the warmer weather only pedal bicycles , your feet, or horse and carriage . No electric bicycles are allowed.
Why dont they put construction workers up at the hotel, that they are working on?? It seem like a waste of time, effort, money to get them back forth on a boat.
Because those hotels are very expensive. They are closed for the spring fall and winter and they are only open for the summer for tourism
Maybe because they want to go home to their families like everybody else.
@@kathyyoung1774 very keen observation. And exactly that. There are a lot of alcoholics that live year round and some in Forman or lead roles stay Mon. thru Fri. and hit the bar after 5 n close it down every night. Wrecks havoc on the pay check.
What a great life
