- Do you want improve your photo by making an object standout through a creamier bokeh and a narrow depth-of-field? You may not know that you don't need a Photoshop subscription to do it. Pixelmator Pro can do the job just as well. That's what we are going to be showing you in today's video. Also, we will be answering what is the better tool for creating narrow depth-of-field: Pixelmtor Pro or Affiniy Photo.
Another great video thanks 😊
Thanks for the good review! 🙂
As a Pixelmator Pro user, love your channel
Glad to hear it! We love Pixelmator here too!
Great tutorial. Making a mask image is something I am seeing for the first time.
Yes only Pixelmator Pro seems to be able to support this.
@@takebetterphotos8132 I don't know, but in PS you can edit the mask as a channel so it is not necessary to do what you did here. But I no longer use PS so this great,
@@takebetterphotos8132 I tried your method on one of my photos and noticed it creates a blooming effect around the subject especially when the Bokeh amount is cranked up. Looking back at the video I see the blooming outline around your dog. To avoid this I use a different method with Gaussian blur.
Hi Lysander I didn't realized you replied to this post with the bloom sideffect which I pointed out in a future video. Still getting used to UA-cam studios comment section! Yes it is an unfortunate side effect which is really an issue with the masking software as Photoshop doesn't have this issue.
Such good tutorial. Thanks. Is there a complete and thorough image editing course in Pixelmator Pro? That'd be quite handy!
Glad to help. I don't know of any full tutorial for the latest version. But if you just want the basic concepts here is an older one ua-cam.com/users/liveu_5m7OFpguo?si=iBcWCdPFPXfX-NfK
@@takebetterphotos8132 Ah, thanks. Will take a look, not a lot shoulda changed.
Excellent video. I wonder what options there are to integrate AP and PP ? For instance, that mask you created as an image, probably could be used in AP, so that the AP bokeh could be used. Of course I wish each app would allow the other to be a plugin - but I'm thinking there must be optimal work flows between the two - especially to exploit PP AI. I wish there were a way to cut and past from one app to the other, instead of having to save intermediate files - and which format to save ? png ? or psd ? I think they both support psd ? I'm just thinking out loud. I have the same challenge with Luinar NEO (which I think is completely over priced). Can't make plugin on Apple, might be apple to on Windows ....
Hi I actually replied to this very good question but I just realized it wasn't posted. Anyway I managed to think of a work around. The best way to interoperate (given that Affinity Photo doesn't support image masks and you want to use the AI masks of Pixelmator while the bokeh of Affinity) is the following: (1) Make the AI selection in pixelmator and save the mask as an image (2) In Affinity add both the mask image and the original image as layers (3) Apply the lens blur live filter in Affinity and add an adjustment layer to the lens blur filter (4) Create a selection from the mask image (5) paint over the adjustment layer mask to replicate the original mask image. I'm doing it this way knowing that Affinity doesn't support mask images. Hopefully that helps. Maybe I'll make a video on it.
@@takebetterphotos8132 It would be helpful to make a video as I'm having a bit of trouble following your process. I was thinking more in terms of sharing files. So I opened a jpg in Pixelmator Pro (PP) and I created a second layer, then did a ML, then exported as a Photoshop (PSD) and opened in Affinity Photo (AP) and the layers were preserved from PP. Then I tried another experiment, to open a new image in AP, and place the psd with link option. Then I closed AP. I modified the photo in PP and re exported to the same PSD, hoping AP would recognize the new PSD version when I opened the saved AP file. But no, it still used the old PSD version. Hope this makes sense to you - Your approach is to share the "mask" my approach is to try to share the "layer", so that it can be modified again if needed - Pedro
Oops sorry, my process did work. I made a mistake. Modifying and reexporting the "layers" from PP, is recognized as an updated link when reopening in AP - I need to play with this more :) - Pedro (which is not my real name, sorry, I don't trust social media)
I’m new to your channel and Pixelmator (and photo editing too). Any advice for online courses or playlists?
Hi I actually don't watch other videos I learn through trying out the software and the user guide which I recommend www.pixelmator.com/support/guide/pixelmator-pro/
