    To be exact this technique does not give you any “more dynamic range”, but rather compresses the available dynamic range so that it could be displayed on regular monitors. For true HDR you need some of the newer HDR displays capable of producing much more brightness than SDR panels. But then again Pixelmator Pro does not support true HDR, at least not yet.

      Yes compressing available dynamic range for SDR, that's the traditional meaning of HDR. As you say the best experience is to use the newer HDR displays. I believe though that you have to export specifically for the HDR display to see the difference. I understand Pixelmator Pro will be supporting that in the next update.
