Nothing beats the Lightroom workflow and cataloging. Also, I've found its HDR merge to be the best so far as well (in terms of the dynamic range and quality of the merged photo combined with CameraRAW's editing capability). However, to fix the fine details of the HDR merge artifacts, the only solution is to use manual blending, and there's not a good workflow for this. I need to manually edit all the bracketed photos to a similar brightness level and sync the editing, then export them to Photoshop, and do the manual overlay and masking. I hope there's something to improve this workflow....

The purpose of blending and HDR merge is the same-- to get more detail in highlights and shadows. You can think of HDR merge as automated merging while blending is done manually. Here is a video I did on HDR merging on the ipad, I'll see if I can make one for the desktop soon. ua-cam.com/video/mH4dgGO7rVk/v-deo.htmlsi=xNomLi5xyxZ88UEv

I learned this when Photoshop 2 was live (we didn't have layers, then and we often worked on 2-3 computers in parallel because color corrections on a single color channel of a 4C DIN A3 could take many minutes. So trigger a curve correction on machine 1, slide over to machine 2, work another image's cyan channel, move to the next. That's why photoshop had "notify finished actions with a warning tone". So you knew to which machine to turn to next). And I did it during the whole time I worked in the field (~20 Years). Nice, that the knowledge stays alive!

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132 3 дні тому

Wow that is going way back thanks for the perspective. Incredible to imagine how slow computers were back then as you say, taking many minutes for a single operation. But those must have been very impressive to do editing on a computer. I was just glad to use a computer with a GUI.

@@takebetterphotos8132 It was still more flexible than doing it manually on film. But it was a very expensive thing to do: I had a client who had (I think) 5 apple Quadra 950 for 50.000 DM (german currency before the EUR - in today's money probably 80.000 EUR... That was a serious investment and he was kind of a pioneer to go fully digital in print color corrections... Using channels is more or less the exact thing one would do it manually with fine brushes and airbrush on Film... It is always amazing to watch how far we've come!

:23 😅perfect words for most photo editing 😭---- just too many ways to do any one thing and all the different programs just make it worse 🧐 🤣 Selections have always been a drama for me even though it has improved greatly with most new Apps over the years . Truly it is never ending😊 Pen tool sounds very painstaking! The only reason I teach this is because I found the refine brush making mistakes and at least this one gave results. In spot weighted you don’t have to box faces. You can make a small box in the brightest area of interest and another in the the darkest and the algorithm will nicely balance the tonal range.

Does not work for me. I am guessing this is because in my picture the background has 2 colors, one darker and the other lighter than the model's hair. Thank you! You have confirmed my opinion of on1 photo raw. I don't have capture one but I do have on1 and luminar neo as well as lightroom cc, photoshop and a few others. I have been extensively trying the AI selection in on1 and i think it is the best at least for me.

Yes I do believe it is slightly better than Capture One as well by the smallest of margins.

@@takebetterphotos8132since I took a lot of firework photos on the 4th I thought I would try to do a composite with masking. I tried PS, LRC, NEO and on1. None of them did good on it. But on1 got more detail than the others but still not good enough. I tried refining but it ate up most of whatever I ran it over. Good thing is this is just the beginning. I’m not disappointed, I know AI selections will get better and better. Still leaps and bounds from the old days. Ugh CS2 so much work and time lol

Sorry to hear it didn't do it. Perhaps luminosity masking would do a better job. The brightness of the fireworks seems applicable to it.

@@takebetterphotos8132 I did play around with that too. My background was a light blue sky for the base. The photo with the firework was dark almost black, the fire work was so beautiful and colorful. when I got what i wanted in all white in the mask, I unhid the base photo it was so light almost transparent on the light blue background. I even tried blend modes. I'll keep experimenting because I am very stubborn lol. Thank you. I love your channel!!

Wow sounds like a really tough problem. But yes no substitute for experimenting. Perhaps I'll give it a try myself. Or you can send me a link to a similar photo. Thanks for watching!

Luminosity mask in ON1 is the proper tool for landscapes.

good comparison but you should have probably included the Adobe masking features in Photoshop and Camera Raw. Also, On1 does have both a luminosity and color mask which can be applied against the super select mask. It also feathering features. One great thing about On1 is you can do more than just tone and color corrections but also all the effects like blur, glow, dynamic contrast etc on specific parts of the image via super select. .I have all those products other than CaptureOne which is so over-priced it is unbelievable.

Thanks for the valuable insights. Yes a lot of people pointed that out. I chose these three editors because of their similar point-and-click masking workflow. However I just did a Lightroom masking comparison in my last video. With regards to the luminosity mask, I find that clicking the tool resets the mask completely, as such my understanding is you can't refine an object mask with a luminosity mask in ON1 and vice versa. I actually did not know about the color range mask. I shall that try that out.

Again great video. I would love to see video - comparison "removing distractions from picture" (of course more complicated and not only simple things) On1, LR, C1, DxO. Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion. I suspect LR and Luminar Neo will win due to their generative AI. A good test nevertheless.

By default On1’s Object AI has a rather large feathering hence the halo around the palm tree, but you can adjust the feathering afterwards.

ON1 2024.5 would be great, but the update from 2024.3 does not work in my new PC

My guess is that your computer doesn't have a strong enough GPU? That's the way all software is going unfortunately.

Good comparison of this three RAW converters. However, stability, speed and natural colors of Capture One Pro are best and especially at the black Friday week, you can get Capture One Pro cheaper (up to 50%). So far, your comparison seems to be not catching all the parameters that are important for me. Anyway, I have all three programs and prefer Capture One as standard RAW Converter for my photos, Luminar NEO for portraits and people and ON1 Photo RAW 2024.5 with Brilliance AI for give good landscape photos the final look in colors. I think all of this three RAW Converters have their strengths and weaknesses.

I agree. Colors and tone adjustments of Capture One make it the best RAW converter. I'm an owner as well. I do find the though search of C1 was way slower than ON1 in my catalog of thousands of files. Not sure if its my setup or the software. They all have their strengths for sure. ON1 price is also much cheaper. I like luminar for its HDR, focus stacking, and generase.

@@takebetterphotos8132 I noticed lower speed of a big catalog with a really high number of pictures by Capture One similar to Lightroom, that I used a few years ago (no abo). My solution is to use for every project an catalog for its own and for searching photos I have a good folder structure on my SSD and use Excire Foto.

I see glad it wasn't just me. Lightroom for me didn't have the slow return of results as C1 which could take minutes for basic file searches. I'll look into Excire Foto. Thanks.
