- The Amazon Kindle is the most popular e-reader in the world. This Kindle came out in late 2022 and is still tremendously relevant. The Boox came out in the Spring of 2023 and is the new kid on the block. Both models have a front-light 300 PPI screen and look similar visually.

"For Kindle, You are stuck!" This made me buy Boox Poke 5 and I don't regret one thing! So many ebook format options to read and rent! Thanks for the great comparison.
The Boox Poke 5 looks perfect for me. I use three apps for ebooks and couldn't find any devices that would easily allow me to use all of them until I stumbled across your channel! Great comparison too

I understand that you were switching between many apps on the Poke, and even watching UA-cam, which are things that we won't be doing a lot on this kind of device, but 7-8% battery drain in 15 min is a lot of battery usage! Assuming that was how long it took you to record this video, you would only be able to read something for about 4 hours using the same backlight setting. That's worse than reading on a phone?

You know, in lieu of something like the Freewrite series of epaper typewriters, I wonder if this would be a fantastically more cost-efficient, productive-yet-super-portable alternative. Just connected a BT keyboard to the Poke 5, and you got yourself GDoc, Word, any number of writing apps in eink. The screens the same size, but you can also use it for other things (which I know the point of Freewrite is to be totally distraction-free, but you could just Airplane mode the Poke 5 and just not download distracting apps to make sure you don't get notifications and what not).
This video was the final sign for me to order the Poke 5 and I just did. One thing though, I will just use it purely for reading. I don't need it for social media and YT.
A couple years ago, I came to same conclusion, but did know about Boox. So I bought a cheap android phone, did not put in SIM card, but 1T micro so. I hotspot it to phone to use to keep my phone safe & uncluttered. I put my music, pod casts & kindle app & kobo & epub. I did the same with used A7 lite tabs. When I am not using it for Google maps, I put screen on greyscale & low light & power save. I am sure I don’t get as good a battery life as my dedicated reader, but not bad. I also did same with old iPad mini. Have a few Apple Books too
How about a showdown between the Poke 5 and the M6???? Can't figure out which one to get.
Is there any difference between the poke5 and leaf2 besides size and the buttons? Are either water resistant? Basically just looking for an e-reader with e-ink display that can use kindle, nook, and hoopla.

Great work on this. I'm leaning more and more on picking up an Onyx.
They both last week vut obviously kindle will last longer. Any android based e paper eill have significantly reduced battery life (2-3 day) but dince it can last for a week doesnt make much difference
Good review but you should also have done other e-reading apps and cover battery life with and without wifi on. I keep my Kindle wifi off unless I am downloading and charge about once a month.
Shouldnt this be compared with the meebook m6 instead?
So same screen same size means we can use Kindle cases with that open turn on feature?

Looking at the kindle app on the Boox, I feel like I would be more tempted to not have a dedicated E-reader if the android apps were more optimised for E Ink screens. Or more likely, they had a mode that imitated the interface of the actual kindle devices. But they’re probably not going to do that because they obviously want to give you a reason to buy their hardware.
I find it odd you consider the onyx to be something other than an ereader. To me, it's what an ereader should be, with kindles being a functionally limited version

Probably the biggest reason I wouldn’t buy one though now I’ve heard it, is the lack of Android OS updates. I try to keep my devices for as long as I can. I replaced my iPhone 6 with a 12 Mini. So that was 6 years. My iPad Air to my new Air was I think 7 years. They did lose iOS support for the last year or so but with an E Ink device, you wouldn’t get any security updates even. So for me, they need to sort that out and get at least 5 years of full updates. But I’m not sure if even android phones get that support. Only Pixel phones probably get that kind of support. So that’s a big problem that Android needs to solve.
@@christill for standard book formats, you don't need the latest android version. Eg. The latest version of Moon+ reader pro works on any device running android 5.2 and above, which is around 7years old at this point. Updates being a necessity for reading compatibility is a nitpick, because all reader apps will work for years, and bluetooth, wifi aren't going to change that much, so getting your books into the device and reading them won't be an issue for 5 years at least.
Where I do see an issue is that it lacks security updates, which can be easily remedied by using a throwaway google account for integration purposes and avoid using your main credentials on a boox device(as people report that it phones back to Chinese servers with god knows what).
Note - I am basing this on my ownership of Boox Tab Ultra C.
Are you really reading on a normal display?
Because that's what it's all about in the first place - namely an eye-friendly display that you can use to read outdoors without any problems too.
An e-ink tablet like the small Poke 5 is not intended to replace a normal tablet/smartphone (although there are now other calibers, such as the Boox Tab Ultra/C), but primarily a device for reading, which, however, has full freedom of reading offers (which normal readers just don't offer).
But you can also use it as a normal tablet, for example on the balcony/terrace/garden.
The performance allows it and the e-ink display is far superior to normal displays.
There are also ways to protect your data.
I've got a Poke 5 on order from Good e-Reader store. I've got a Libra 2 as my primary and various kindles. I bought the Poke 5 because I don't want to be stuck in a particular ecosystem. Look forward to being able to browse my library whether it's Amazon, Kobo, Google Play Books, B&N, Overdrive, anything. The flexibility comes with a price it sounds like, in terms of fiddling with settings and such, so this is definitely the nerdy e-reader if you want a 6" (yes, I know it's technically a tablet!).
I've heard some content creators who own previous pokes complain about NetGally not working properly on the Poke. I have a Nova3, which is a 7.8" note taking device, I gave my parents a Poke2 and a Poke4 Lite, the Poke4 Lite had an issue with installing Scribd (which Scribd or Boox give you a solution by just googling it) The Kobo and Kindle app work well in the 3 devices (albeit having to use the browser to buy books in the Kindle store because it doesn't allow you to buy them through the app) And unlike other tablets and phones the PlayStore doesn't upgrade the apps continually so you need to enter the store quite often to keep the apps un to scratch or they glitch
I think you will like him. I've been using and loving my Poke 3 for 2 years - and if it broke I would buy the Poke 5.
The Poke 3 is my main reader, but I also like to use it as a tablet on the balcony - the e-ink display is superior to the other displays, especially outdoors. And the performance is also very good for this.
How is your experience?
On the Kindle and Kobo you can turn black/white for nighttime reading.
Can the Poke 5 do that?
I have onyx poke 2 and I love the size and everything but the battery is just terrible. I hope they will fix that. I have both Kindle and onyx but I'm using Kindle more because it stays longer.
How long do they last? Do you keep wifi on? Asking because I was considering one of these android e-readers to replace my old kindle but if the battery life is bad then I guess I'll save my money.
What size sd card can I put in it because even on the site it doesn't say?

I thought the Boox Poke 5 had a Carta HD screen, versus the Carta 1200 on the Kindle. Is that wrong, or when you kept saying this is the exact same screen, you meant the same exact manufacturer (Carta)?
I replaced a 2012 Kindle paperwhite with a poke5 when the battery gave up, The major issue I have is the power on time being around 30 sec, while the kindle is instant on.
I think there's a way to configure sleep mode in the settings. Don't have the device myself but saw this mentioned when I was looking at the Boox Air3 C (also android based)

How good is the reddit, discord and web blog reading experience on the poke 5? I really need something to do my Game design research on and Kindle's browser just doesn't cut it, android apps dont work and my phone exhausts me.

DEALBREAKER: I buy and read kindle books. I bought a book poke 3 but the page turning is horrible. There is stuttering, screen bleeds. It’s just really bad for my eyes and no matter how I update the Boox, how I tweak the screen settings. It just won’t work smoothly. It seems like the Poke 5 is still the same here so I have to pass and stick to my kindle oasis. Thanks for the side by side review.
I notice in this video how clear the font is on the Kindle compared to the blurry/cloudy fonts on the Onyx, even when both are technically 300ppi. I don't care how many more things other than reading books you can do on the Onyx if it's going to be THAT "cloudy". Just look at the difference man! It's obvious to say that people buying these devices have problems reading on phone/PC screens and are looking for a pleasant blurriness/glare free experience.
Yeah it's cool that the Onyx can work as a e-ink tablet too but I can't oversee the cons over the "prose" (pun intended). If I wanted a tablet to watch series I'd have better options in the market. Besides, F*** China... there are serious concerns over these Chinese devices phoning Chinese servers every time you open an app on them (be careful) but ofc they deny it saying "It's anti Chinese sentiment" yet they don't comply with user's global security/privacy standards... but hey, that's what happens when you live under a dictatorship, if you're the one in power you can do whatever you want. I wouldn't recommend these Chinese (Onyx, Pocketbook, MeeBook...) devices to anyone concerned about his/her own privacy.

Oh I just figured out that it has an inbuilt audio and the users can listen using a Bluetooth speaker or headphones

Hi, new subscriber here. I am currently using a Kindle 10th gen, but I am planning to switch to a Kobo Libra at some point. I've read that the first Libra was released in 2019, and the Libra 2 was released in 2021. Do you think we can expect a "Libra 2E/Libra 3" sometime later this year?

why buy boox tablet which has a poorer b/w screen on that price? Just for the reason of reading book?
Honestly with the pages turning like that, I'd rather have a Kindle for Kindle content. And it's the same on most "Android" based eInk devices and apps. Where Android isn't really optimized for eReaders. Sure it works, but it's always a lesser experience than just an eReader or an LCD/OLED tablet.

Honestly, I prefer the massive amount of increased functionality over page turn animations. There's so much more I can use an android ereader for, it makes a kindle a waste of money for me.
The kindle app just doesn’t work on ebook readers. It lags and page turns stutters. Meds my eyes up so I have to stick to my kindle.
Personally, I feel we are trying to compare apples to oranges on this one.

Many mentioned poor battery life in general of Onyx Boox. Pocketbook HD 3, Touch Lux 5, Basic Lux 4 are similar weight and form factor as these.
I just bought Onyx boox poke 5 and now I'm worried about the battery! Do they sell batteries for it or I will just throw it away when the battery becomes so poor ?

I just don't get why you would use 90% of the features on the Boox. The ecosystem switching is cool but UA-cam, internet browsing, watching videos? Why? Most people have a phone or computer or tv that does all of those things much better. I would guess the majority of people purchasing an e reader want to read for the most part which is why they're buying an e ink display instead of just using their phone to read.
True, but as someone with an ereader phone who is 'watching' this video right now, because as stated this is mostly a 'talking video' and lots of the videos I watch are like that, I can confirm that some people will use 'all that stuff', or at least watch the option too.
Granted I did go for a black and white screen party on purpose with the Hisense because watch/listening to youtube on my Boox Air C yeah... the colour wasn't there yet for videos even on just an occasional glance at the screen for reference basis while listening to things because it was just too wrong for me so I'd prefer to just not have colour in that case. Good for coloured note taking video not so much.
Although I am curious if the Ultra Tab C is fast enough for watching lectures with coloured power points. That could certainly be interesting and useful for note taking.
I see then you reading news sites on this or searching some information on wiki/other site. But this device will not be as main device for that.

Foreign country content. Kobo and Kindle require foreign addresses, vpns, and credit cards. Can be a major hassle. With an e-ink android tablet I’ll be able to use book apps that don’t require any of those loopholes to get books/magazines rom other countries that I don’t currently reside.

@@schoolaesthetic i got m6 and only problem ive found is yellow light. level 1-2 is too orange for me🥲. My eyes hurt every time i use this level. Other than that is really good.
Kindle on my poke 3 and poke 4 are very slow. If you mainly read on kindle just stick with kindle. The only thing good on the poke devices is neoreader. My leaf however is a savage. And why does audible not work on the poke 4?
Maybe cause I’ve been with Kindle for nearly a decade now, I just like the Kindle interface. I really LOVE my Paperwhite 11th gen and with Kindle Unlimited it’s even more Amazing along with using Libby to get more books. My only hope is that Amazon does a Color E ink display for when I read manga that would be so cool!

How come there's no talk about battery life on these? Yeah the Boox can do all kinds of things but it's an android tablet. Will be doing things in the background that will drain the battery faster even if you keep it in airplane mode.
No, it's an e-ink device, which is more battery friendly, I read every night and I have to charge my Nova3 around once every week and a half or 2 weeks, and it has a whole lot more stuff going on than the Poke, my dad charges his Poke4 Lite every 2 weeks and he reads a book a night.

If you only understand & speak one language, maybe kindle could be for you but if you are multi language speaker then you would need apps. It's just you that you don't need apps...

The thing is that Kindle is a single purpose device and has its vibe -- it's a book, read me! Whereas Poke is just a generic tablet with no mojo. I'd rather preferred a beefed up ebook reader with some customization and smooth scrolling, than a generic tablet. And I suspect battery life will be abysmal compared to Kindle.

If you want a “reading” experience, go with a traditional ereader.
You want a tablet experience…use a phone or a traditional tablet.
For me, it's simply not enough formatting options on Kindle. Android does allow custom readers with extensive formatting options. Plus I love my Tachiyomi, kindle cannot do that.
It is a traditional ereader. With my onyx device, I read content from amazon, kobo, Google play books, plus I view pdfs, office docs, CAD drawings, sheet music, and other documents.
I honestly don't see why people would buy a kindle after owning one.
