    Boox Page and Poke 5 devices represent the latest edition of Boox's 7" and 6" portable eReader devices. Traditionally, Poke was usually quite a good choice for a portable reader, while Leaf has had a turbulent start, with Leaf 1 not having an identity and not being that good, and Leaf 2 making massive improvements across the board but lacking performance. Page is basically Leaf 3, and Poke 5, is well, the latest iteration of the Poke devices. So let's see if these iterations bring anything worthy to the table, and how they compare to each other.

    Voja, thank you very much for another great video 👍.
    I've been using my Poke 3 every day for 2 ½ years, love it dearly and hope that it will last for a very, very long time.
    The Poke 5 is a stark step down from Poke 3 and 2 and I don't understand how this happened.
    Despite the large font, I prefer to read with a small, light 6-inch notebook (I stretched an elastic band with Velcro as a hand strap around the lid of the old adhesive cover you showed, which works brilliantly.
    The sewn cover is still in perfect condition for me).
    I really hope that Boox doesn't leave 6 inch lovers out in the cold.

    With the Boox Page, I have the Leaf 2 white and I actually really like the front buttons placed close together, makes it easy to slide your thumb between them and you can feel the ridge that separates them. The Page seems awesome. The buttons are super nice for a dedicated yet portable reader, then my 110gram Inkpalm5 (also with nice physical volume buttons for page-turning) is for true pocket-portability that just makes the middle-ground Poke 5 (and 170 gram Boox Palma) an unnecessary size for me.

    Help! lol. I have looked at a gazillion videos and more confused than ever.
    I am a musician and looking for the best e-reader to read and organize my PDF's for live playing. I've had a Surface Pro 7 and screen is just too small for my aging eyes. I use Drawboard for PDF manipulation and organizing, which is ok. Simpler would be better. E-Readers are just so much easier to read, but the ones I've seen are small and not sure about PDF organizing (Setlists, master files, etc...)
    What would you recommend?

    I kinda wish the Page was an 8" and the buttons were a bit separated, like my old Forma.

      I checked out the Meebook M7 as an alternative, but unfortunately, it would be a size downgrade to 6.8", and the extra bezzle on the bottom as well as the side kind throws it off for me, formwise.

    The web browser on my Supernote is terrible, so I purchased a basic Kindle only to discover that it's probably the only other e-ink device out their that has a web browser worse than Supernote's... obviously I should've thought it through. I only need to google scripture references while working with my Supernote and was considering the Poke 5 but now I'm not so sure, I'm certainly not planning on spending much to gain that functionality but need something other than my current iPad Mini whose screen burns my eyes out first thing in the morning.

  • @os2baba
    @os2baba 8 місяців тому +1

    I just love my Poke 3 and absolutely detest the Leaf 2. So I bought the Poke 5. Just got it. Preferred the Poke 3 case. Honestly can't see the difference between the Poke 3 and the Poke 5. But thankfully, despite having similar internals to the Leaf 2, it's not sluggish in the least.
    The only problem I have had with it so far is that unlike the Poke 3 and every review of Poke 5, including yours, I don't have separate cold and warm sliders for the frontlight. Instead I have a brightness and some weird color adjustment. It's pretty bad. No idea how to get the separate sliders. I don't see any way to do that.
    Edit: Heard back from Boox. This is something they did in firmware 3.3.2. IMO it's a definite regression. It's a significantly worse implementation.
    I was going to give my Poke 3 to my sister and keep the Poke 5. I'm going to hold on to my Poke 3. I just discovered that I got navigation buttons in some firmware!!! There is literally nothing in the Poke 5 that is an improvement.
    Now if you don't have the Poke 3, then the Poke 5 is easily the best book e-reader to get. I totally disagree with this review about the ergonomics. I think one of the best things about this reader is the 6" size. I can put that in my Jeans pocket which I can't do with the Leaf 2 or the Page. I also disagree about the benefit of the larger bezel in holding the Page/Leaf 2. It's much easier to hold the Poke 3/5 in one hand, very similarly to how you hold your phone. It's incredibly light. The Leaf 2/Page is a much more awkward device to hold in one hand. I read novels. Never read Manga or PDFs. They are both terrible in reflows on resizing the fonts. And the bigger Leaf2/Page does nothing to fix that. For PDFs, I have no choice but to use my Galaxy tab for optimal reading. And I don't particularly like reading on the tablet.

    • @os2baba
      @os2baba 6 місяців тому

      @@user-ru8xu5im3d yes. I'm sure the 10.3" is a good size for PDFs. For me it's too big to read novels. Which is my primary reading. But if PDFs are the main reading sources, IMO, the Page 2 (size) is not good enough.

      I was going to to replace my Poke 5 with Page because people say it is better to hold in hands. But after your comment, I am convinced that Poke 5 is better. I value more the fact that I can put it to the jeans and read everywhere.

    • @os2baba
      @os2baba 4 місяці тому

      Yes I'm sure a 10" reader would be good at PDFs. But it's too big for reading novels. I don't really like my Samsung tablet. It's too heavy for me. And I never carry it out of the house. But for reading my photography books which are mostly PDFs, it's perfect. While an e-ink tablet would work ergonomically, it doesn't for photos.

    All Boox products phone home to China and the company processes data in accordance with Chinese law.
    The fact that you consistently fail to note this is disconcerting.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  10 місяців тому +16

      No they don't, and you really should inform yourself more thoroughly before you go on with public accusations of such sort.
      Your data is sent via the ksync process, only if you are logged in and using the Boox account. This is normal, as you choose to use their cloud services, and the device needs to communicate with the cloud server for synchronization purposes, as that is what you instructed it to do. The same thing happens if you choose to use Google Drive as your cloud sync option, except then your data is sent to Google, or to Microsoft, if you choose the OneDrive sync option. That is how cloud synchronization works.
      If you are not logged into any service, nothing is being sent anywhere.
