Hey just wanted to say that I bought my first car like a year ago, 1999 Ford explorer sport, and these videos have helped me so much in fixing the 20 year old car. I am very glad that you guys made this library to look through because I've used nearly every video on the explorer you've made to fix my own. Thank you so much.
First, thanks SO MUCH to 1AAUTO for the great parts and videos to help out we DIY'ers. My power driver's window regulator repair wouldn't have been possible without them. So now...my key won't reliably unlock the driver's door, nor will the FOB. I should add this has been going on intermittently for several years but is now getting much worse. The door unlocks maybe 1 in 50 attempts (yes...I'm the goofball standing in the parking lot clicking my FOB over and over and turning the key in the lock...for 10 minutes). The FOB and key do unlock and lock all other doors just fine. It's only the driver's door that will not unlock reliably. I've lubricated all door locks and internal, mechanical components, even got the child safety locks on the rear doors to work properly again. But the driver's door lock is still a bugger. I checked for the frayed/broken/shorted wire in the driver's door wiring harness/cannon and all looks good there. Based on what I'm reading, this sounds like a power door lock actuator but would like some input before buying the part and attempting the repair. Thanks to all, especially 1AAUTO!
I just replaced the Lock Actuator on the Left front passenger door on my 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. Great video, but on my truck I didn't have to remove the 3 screws on the lock mechanism. I just pulled the bottom of the actuator up towards the window and the hook came out of the lock mechanism, real easy and saved a step. Easy to install the new actuator as well. Thanks, keep the DIY repairs coming. Always learn a new repair on UA-cam.
+steve rice Thanks for watching. If any of our viewers needs to make this repair, we carry the auto repair part shown in this video on our website. Here is a link to them: www.1aauto.com/1A/DoorLockActuators/Ford/Explorer/1ADRK00009?UA-cam&CTA+Comment&UNXlQi-_a1k
These videos are why I will purchase my parts through you. Please continue to do these videos and save us from the stealerships. Great work guys! We really appreciate you.
I am glad people like yourself do these. it is very helpful. The only advice I would give is do a voice over for all of the audio to equalize the sound. I had it playing on my TV & my wife got mad at me because the sound would jump up so high all of a sudden while she was watching the voice her fav show. Thanks for making this thought.
@Matt Freda Thank you for watching. Unfortunately we do not have a video for your application. We will keep this repair in mind for future videos. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
@RonBronson Yes you would. That actuator has a pretty big hook that hooks to the latch. As the video shows you need to move it around quite a bit in order to unhook it from the latch.
That's correct. You may also want to take the door panel off to see if there's a bend rod in there that could be causing the lock to only come up half way.
I owe you a debt of gratitude. I watched this video and was able to change the actuator myself. I also used another video in this series to change my door latch on '00 Ford Explorer. My alternator went out on it and I was able to do it myself with your help. I can't thank you enough. You saved me hundreds of dollars in labor bills. Many thanks...
Worked perfectly on my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac and I also did not have to remove the door latch. For the rivet i knocked out, I just replaced it with a bolt and nut. Took me about an hour.
+T Slice Thank you for watching, as well as the update! We're glad to hear of your experience, and hope to work with you again in the future! 1aauto.com
Do you by chance have a alarm system on the vehicle or a key fob to unlock and lock the vehicle? If you do, you might have an issue with the security system in the vehicle. If you don't, you might have an issue with the master switch on the driver side.
Ordered a pair of the actuators for my '00 Explorer since neither lock would pop up. As it happens BOTH of them had broken off the little pop rivet holding the actuator to the frame and had fallen into the door well. Seriously - a pop rivet for something like this?? Anyway, video instructions were spot on and both doors took me about 90 minutes (no surprise the second door went quicker after experiencing the first). Thanks for the help!
@strickmans Usually they will just stop popping up when you try to unlock the door. Typically when they go bad you can hear them trying to pop up, but nothing happens.
You may have a door lock actuator that has gone bad, typically that's what happens when they fail. We carry new door lock actuators on our website for many vehicles with FREE SHIPPING. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
It sounds like you might have an issue with the latch itself and not the actuator. With the door open, you should try spraying some penetrating oil like PB blaster or equivalent into the latch area and move the handle back and forth on the outside and pull up and down on the lock tab on the door panel
I just opened the bracket that holds the actuator a little with a screwdriver and pulled it out and wiggled it out at the hook,..and it was out,..without taking all those guts out (tracks and things),..unplugged it,..and now just have to put new one in !!!
I already had to replace the actuator module in the console next to the steering column. What a pain! Had to take the entire console apart and it's awkward to get to its screws. A key clue is that the cruise control won't work because its circuit is routed through this actuator.
@cotaman7 Yes it'll make a noise. If the actuator looks like it's trying to pop the locks open but doesn't, then you may need a new door lock actuator. We carry them for most vehicles on our website 1aauto.com.
hi, 1st well done video, I have a question, I have a 04 Lincoln LS and im having problems with the driver door, the door close well but the lock doesn't work, what that can be? and if you are selling that part in your website.....thx.....
I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. I just replaced the inside passenger back interior door handle. It had been broken for years. The thing is though, I still can't open the door from the inside. The handle works fine and I can hear the latch moving and I can open the door from the outside just fine. Also, I just noticed that this door doesn't lock. I have no idea if it started happening just after replacing the interior door handle, or if it hasn't been locking for a long time. This is my play/camping vehicle for kayak trips, so it gets abused, rode hard and put up wet. I don't pay attention to little things like door locks, haha. I am also pretty good at replacing interior and exterior door handles, as I have found these break when you get close to 200,000 mi (I've replaced almost all of them by now).
The latch may be stuck, or there could be a latching rod that may have become disconnected inside of the door, that would cause it not to open. You may have to try to remove the door panel with the door closed, so that you can reach inside the door and pop it open by hand. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3383
Thank you for your video's, they helped me with a power window issue on my 98 Explorer Sport...Another issue I am having is the power locks won't work. The fuse is good, the driver side or passenger switch will not work. I don't have a fob to try.
How does one know if it is the actuator, or the door handle that needs to be replaced? I have a floppy door handle right now. The door will not lock from either the key fob or the inside lock/unlock button. I watched your other video concerning the door handle, but now I'm not sure if I need that or the actuator.
Great demo!! I do have one question.. The rivet you replaced with the screw and bolt. Did that come with the new accuator or was supplied by yourself? If so.. should I just find a screw and bolt combo that will work. Do you know the size?
Installed the new actuator and snapped off the safety light fixture that connects to the hinge, not a big deal, nice being able to work on the car with the front door opened, not worrying about the battery, after installing the actuator, it didnt work, after two days of removing and reinstalling, I unscrewed the lock piece that screws to the rode lock, once that was off it worked, when i put it back on it didnt, i cut the piece in half, the lock pin screwed up higher and did not jam,
I'm not sure what is wrong with my door because in a sense, it "half locks." I have a 97 ford explorer xlt & the door will not open whatsoever. I have the panel off even though it is shut, and I've tried pulling the "bar" that opens/unlatches the door from the locking mechanism and it still continues to stay shut. What would you recommend to do to get it open?
We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows this repair. There might be a cable inside the door that connects the two, that may have gotten stretched. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
On my wife's explorer the door "locks" the lock rod goes down but you can open the door with it locked. Of course the alarm goes nuts but I'm wondering if this is the actuator or something else?
Is there any chance you could do a video showing how to replace the actual latch that you loosened by removing the three screws? I have to replace mine in the driver's door of an '01 explorer and I can't figure out detach any of the rods that are hooked into it. I could probably remove the actuator linkage after watching this video but there's no way to remove the lock knob rod, the link to the door lock cylinder, etc. The bends are too tight and the amount of rod that passes through the attachment point(s) is far too much to get them out. The must be a trick to removing the rods from the latch but I haven't been able to find a video of it anywhere. Thanks!
any tips for the clips in the control panels? my fingers are killing me. also for the clip attached to the window track. for some reason I cant get that off.
I have a 2001 ford explorer sport and I think the actuator just went. I use the keyless entry and I don't hear the locking mechanism on the driver side door like I do on the passenger side. Its pretty loud so not hearing it go off and unlock the door isn't normal. Do you think this is the actuator? If so, will it be similar enough to fix as in this video?
You may want to see if there's power going to the actuator when the switch is pressed. If there is, than the switch may be bad. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
I just bought a replacement actuator. There are multiple copper/gold hooks that came with it. Am I just supposed to use the one like you used with both O rings and all the other ones are useless?
Hello. I broke the door handle to my sport trac and i am replacing the handles, with your videos seems as a simple fix but now that I have replaced them the door still does not open. Could it be another issue?
There's not really a specific bolt size to use. basically any bolt that will fit can be used to make the repair. Have a great day. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
I have a 2000 eddie bauer explorer. The drivers door wont lock all others do by remote or manually. I can hear the drivers lock clicking but it will not lock. What can be the problem. Thanks
I couldn't really hear the audio during the part of the video where you were replacing the rivet you had drilled out with a bolt, but did the replacement actuator come with that replacement bolt or did you have to buy that separately?
I had the same problem with my truck and I got in the panel and found out my rod that goes to my lock cylinder was unhooked and causing it to not lock all the way down. Make sure everything is in its place and check the rivet on the actuator to see if its still holding strong.
Thank you for the video! Question: I have a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac and I recently replaced my door lock actuator for the 2nd time in the past year. I can lock all of my doors, but I cannot unlock my drivers door from the key fab, the interior lock switch, the key, or the keypad. I have to enter through another door, climb over the seat and use the inside door handle to open the drivers door. Someone mentioned online that they were missing the spring that goes from the lock inside the panel to the lever. I can't find anywhere online that shows the spring and where it goes/part no. Do you know if there is supposed to be a spring or why this may be happening? Perhaps you have the part I need? Thanks in advance! :)
+Dawn Burton You may want to remove the door panel so that you can see inside of the door. You may have a clip that has broke off of the latch rod that connects to the door handle. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
Thank you for the reply! I discovered I can open my drivers door by turning the key to the right while lifting up on the handle. Obviously I'd like to just hit the fab or use the keypad to unlock the doors and be able to open it from the exterior. Perhaps it's the latch itself.
I`m not sure if this is the part I need to replace or what, but my door won`t latch closed. I think the spring for the latch itself went out. I own a 2007 Ford Taurus SEL. It has been terribly cold where I live -25 wind chills. And I do not have a garage, nor do I know anyone who does so I`m a bit stuck. Any ideas?
If the door latch hits the striker on the body of the car and doesn't grab it and hold the door shut, the latch might be stuck in the closed position. You should be able to open them back up with a flat head screw driver. If you're not sure how it should look open the other door and take a look at the latch. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
I have a 2005 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer. Both the driver and passenger door lock switches, and also the FOB intermittently will not lock/unlock. If the FOB unlocks, the switches work......adversely, if the FOB doesn't work, the switches don't work either. Could this be an actuator problem, or something else? Also, sometimes when the FOB won't work to unlock, the lights on the mirrors and the interior will light like it is unlocking, but they don't actually unlock. Any suggestions?
Hi I have a 1997 explorer and my driver side door will only lock and unlock with the key remote and the passenger door button, not with the doorlock button on the driverside. I changed the button itself and nothing happen, do you have any suggestions? thanks
This is all good and well. but i didn't see it work with the remote door lock...my switch makes no noise when i try to lock/un lock the door Manually or with the remote ???
You may want to check the wire harness between the door and body of the car for a broken or frayed wire. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
You may need to purchase one separately. You can get one at your local hardware store, or even Home Depot or Lowe's Hope this helps you out. Have a great day 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Would this fix my passager door? My problem is that when i use keyless entry the passenger button wont pop up unless a bang the door a bit and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt lock or unlock?
If it seems to be an intermittent issue, take a look at the wire harness that runs between the door and the body of the car. There may be frayed wire in there which could be causing this issue. If there is, repair it and you should be okay. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
I have wierd situation. From the drivers side door and passenger door,my doors will NOT lock using the power lock system. If you go into the trunk and use the power locks there, it will lock and unlock. Could this be the actuators? Or possibly bad wiring?
If there's a way to spray some WD-40 on the inside of that latch, that might help to free it up for you, so that you can pull the rod from the inside of the door and pop it open. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
My problem is multiple, I need to replace the door latch, replace the lock actuator and THEN, find the bad ground wire that goes to my power windows so I can make THEM work as well.
If I had a simple diagram as to where the power window wires go, I could fix that, then just need a simple diagram as to where everything goes for the door handle, latch, wires etc
So my 01 explorer driver's side door has a floppy handle and it locks, but doesn't unlock unless you open it from inside. It's like it doesn't get pushed up all the way when I hit the button or turn the key. Also, my passenger door won't lock at all, but I can still hear something working when I push the button. Is this what I need for both? Really don't want to take it to a shop.
+Brenna Berkner You may have to take the door panels off and inspect the driver's side for a broken handle, or the rod may have fallen off of the door handle on the inside of the door. On the passenger's side you might have a bad door lock actuator if it is power to it and it does not work. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com

@ToddB987 Supplied it myself. You need something 1.5 or 2 cm long M6 thread with 10mm bolt and nut head size.
great video heads up did not need to take the 3 screws out of the locking mechanism to remove the solenoid

Please make one. This the assembly seems to be a more common problem than the actuator with the Explorers.
The door lock actuator may be weak and might need to be replaced.
+Desiree Broadnax You may want to take a look at the latch on the door to see if it's jammed. Hope this helps you out
There's not really a specific bolt size to use. basically any bolt that will fit can be used to make the repair. Have a great day. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
I have a 2000 eddie bauer explorer. The drivers door wont lock all others do by remote or manually. I can hear the drivers lock clicking but it will not lock. What can be the problem. Thanks
The issue could be with the switch itself. Those vehicles are known for having poor switches on them.
You're welcome. Have a great day. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
I changed the button itself and nothing happen, do you have any suggestions? thanks
I bought a new door lock actuator for my 96 Ford Explorer but it didn't come with the bolt and screw to put the new actuator on. What do I do?
This is all good and well. but i didn't see it work with the remote door lock...my switch makes no noise when i try to lock/un lock the door Manually or with the remote ???
You may want to check the wire harness between the door and body of the car for a broken or frayed wire. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Could you do a video for changing the back door actuator not rear hatch door but drivers side rear door on a 4 door explorer
Please can you help me....My 98 acura tl 2.5 is immobilized for the factory alarm system...what can I do to disable it or bypass...Help please...!!
You may need to purchase one separately. You can get one at your local hardware store, or even Home Depot or Lowe's Hope this helps you out. Have a great day 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
What bolt was used to replace the rivet that was originally holding the actuator in place?

Thanks!
1aauto.com
The door lock actuator could be getting tired. We carry new ones on our website with free shipping in the lower 48 states. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Any videos of how to replace the door jamb switch?
+Jblalock1982 Thank you for checking us out. At this time we do not have a video showing the door jamb switch replacement. You may search through other UA-cam videos to get this replaced. 1aauto.com
I am replacing a worn Door Latch Assembly... so I will need to remove the actuator, too, as shown in the video?
thank you
You may want to see if a rod or cable has become undone from the handle inside of the door. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
What size drill bit for that ribid extraction,..I don't want to exceed the hole of the door ? Thanks in advance !!
Start small and pay attention. Good Luck
