Man, you've gotta get some rice growing in there! It's amazing how quickly new life just shows up when you have a water source. We're in the middle of Phoenix, but our landlord refused to fix our pool for about 6 months. At first, it was just mosquitoes, but shortly after, we started seeing dragonflies and all sorts of other insect larvae in the pool. Raccoons, skunks, coyotes and even had an owl for little while. Makes me wish we could create more greenspace in our cities

Very true we had a pool that sprung a leak halfway up once it drained to that point we ended up with thousands of tree frog tadpoles in the pool. And then thousands of tree frogs in the backyard as they grew up.

The energy Kevin gets when actually talking about his water plants after the build vs. the pond building experience is tantamount, I love it. I love this beautiful, EPIC pond, and Kevin knows how to leave different industry experts to do their thing. Instead of trying to deep dive ponds, he put a pond expert UA-camr front and center and that's game recognizing game. It's truly EPIC. Way to go, Kevin - this was SO worth the teasers and wait to see. PAPYRUS?? LETS GOOOO.

In the Seattle area I would go to new development sites that had wetlands and collect amphibian eggs before the wetlands were destroyed. I’d put them in my pond and watch them grow into frogs or salamanders then release them back into areas that were protected. It’s a lot of fun! Plus more biodiversity in you pond is always cool.

Hey Kevin, fun fact: if you wanna do some fully underwater gardening (mostly inedible plants but absolutely beautiful) you can go get some anubias or bucephalandra plants, tie them on a piece of driftwood or a rock, throw them into the pond and in a few months to years you will have a beautiful underwater bush! You can do the same with java fern (microsorum) as well. They can sometimes if they get big enough even grow their leaves out of the water and live like that no problem. Or if you want a more cold-water kelp-ish style you can look into some egeria densa or hornwort, they grow incredibly fast and propagate easily and you can feed the excess to for example chicken. Also as for me personally - I always LOVE to see some mosses growing around the waterfall - they need a lot of moisture to be happy and healthy but they are so beautiful and really decorative. I love everything about water features and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as us aqua nerds do!

We had a man made pond at the house I grew up in and one of my favorite memories from that house is sitting out on the deck on a warm summer night listening to the chorus of frog song and watching the fireflies. Amazing pond! Plant some edible bananas in the basin to shade the patio/ basin! You might need a bib liner from where the final waterfall flows into the basin to direct water to it, but bananas can be planted in gravel as long as the roots can get into the water. Or maybe that moist corner you showed. Also nice that you didn’t do cliff hangers…

You'll have to keep an eye on those plants in the pond if you don't have something to eat them eventually. I know the water lettuce looks REALLY cool once it spreads, but it can become invasive REALLY fast! My mom got some and it sends out runners (kinda like strawberries). She gave me a bunch to bring back to the farm with me for one of our ponds that needs some help. Unfortunately, something ate it all. (I suspect it was the cows.....they'll eat anything green!) But, I'll just get more from her again in the future. ;)
I loved that you used the bio-balls with the filter. I've seen those used with salt water tanks, but not with ponds. However, it makes total sense to use them this way. They will help build your ecosystem in no time!
With everything you've accomplished in the past year, it will be interesting to see what develops this year. You've already made mention of several things, so I'm looking forward to future videos. Bravo! EPIC project with an EPIC outcome!

Look forward to seeing it fully planted out.

Looks great! You should grow water spinach (kangkong). Super delicious! I am going to try an grow water spinach next year.

To me, the pond screams TROPICAL. So topical fruit trees would look great set up in a food forest system...

The rain water holding tank is a great canvas for a local artist to paint a mural on.

That is a beautiful pond, I’ve never seen that type of a gravel filter underground pool area. You might need some shade come spring/summer over the fish and for the blue heron’s in SD. They can be kind of relentless, the only thing that worked well for us was a floating alligator decoy. Good luck with the pond, they are a lot of work but definitely rewarding.

It looks so good brother! Can't WAIT to see what she looks like towards the end of summer as it gets settled in and the growth naturalizes/fills in with the space and your yard.
You and Ed did a great job, really just excellent execution on this project.

This is just beautiful!! (swoon) I love the sound of the water. It sounds so relaxing. I know the birds are going to love it. The butterflies will too I'm sure. And the bees. The list of benefits you added by installing this pond is long. Would be the perfect way to start your morning and end your evening too. Love it! Great job. I hope you plant some flowers for color as a backdrop to add even more beauty.

I was already jealous with the rain water tank, and now this? Oh well. I'll just plant some more trees instead. :) So cool, Kevin.
