- Oli Dugmore hears from a caller called Kevin, who claims that black people are more 'culturally inclined to use knives' than white people.
The discussion comes amid Idris Elba's claim that the government applies more ‘focused thinking’ on tackling XL bullies than on the issue of knife crimes.
His comments came after being presented with new LBC analysis back in January, which revealed that five children per day were arrested for carrying a knife in 2023, including children aged 10 - the minimum age of criminal responsibility.
According to LBC's findings, published for the first time today, around 1,500 children aged 16 and under were arrested for the possession of a knife or other sharp implements such as screwdrivers, carving forks or shards of glass over the first ten months of 2023.

Has anyone done a study on middle class black people and knife crime? Yeah probably Kevin hasn't considered that as according to him all black people are the same and share the same culture.

As a man who is mixed and grew up in 90s, pretty poor , with 3 brothers who are mixed or fully black. There is so much more to it; we haven't been arrested or used a knife. I have a feeling that it is the youth of today with drugs, nice trainers, phones, etc. London is something else entirely when it comes to crime.

The only thing he said , was about culture being a factor in why knife crime is so high in proportion. That was it.
And your analogy doesn’t work either. He never said all black people are knife criminals. So your analogy of saying all English people are ___ doesn’t make any sense.
A proper analogy with England and drinking would look like this. Young English people have a higher incidence of anti-social behaviour on holiday in southern Europe (compared to other European countries) , due to the drinking culture in English society. That’s essentially akin to what he has said, re: culture.

I grew up in Northern Ireland in the 80s and 90s, lots of people got shot, stabbed, and knee capped, none of the perpetrators were black, almost all of them were disaffected, poor, uneducated young men, who grew up in extremely deprived, and heavily segregated, housing estates. I would imagine many of those descriptions apply to the perpetrators of knife crime in London. Race is not the issue.
Rapid immigration in the later 90s and beyond has transformed society from the one you grew up in. In addition, whilst poverty generally has a strong relationship to violent crime, black cultural groups commit knife crime at a per capita rate that vastly exceeds other groups. The rapid growth in those groups have created an extremely complex issue for the UK (in addition to other wealthy economies) and this requires intelligent research and action

Although poverty can be a major driver to this kind of crime, it's a lot more nuanced than just saying that it is the core reason. Gang culture is definitely another factor which can be adopted by any race (such as the white working class of Liverpool) in London it has been adopted by the black community.
If poverty was the only factor then places like Cornwall or the small working class towns in the Midlands would be the worst for knife crime as they have much lower prospects than Londoners.
Race isn't the cause but it is certain cultures within those communities.

Also before mass immigration people in areas like south London were all white, lived in slums in extreme poverty if you had a job it would have been in a factory or down the docks. stabbing and murders where just as prevalent per capital, no coincidence that “road man” is a modern day version of “highway man” a robber who’d prey on victims around the city boundaries and would usually gut their victims like a fish.

@@evolassunglasses4673 This is really the problem. As long as it can be generalised then the real issues never get tackled properly. When we used to have an issue with football hooliganism everybody agreed that it was mostly a subset of young, working class, white men who were causing the issue.
It's annoying that we have the authorities being call out when young black men are being arrested for carrying knives only for the same people to then start complaining about all of the young black people being stabbed and how 'the system has let them down'.

I don’t understand - Why would Sangita be taken off air for pursuing the truth .
I listen to Oli's show regularly at the weekends...and he is a very impressive operator (I also tune in to PoliticsJOE). He has energy and has obviously worked hard to really know about stuff. I contrast this with many mainstream presenters who are better known and he seems miles ahead in terms of being a communicator of genuinely useful information. I admire how he still manages to engage with this caller without losing the rag. I wish him all the very best best in his career progression- I think he is much needed in this increasingly out of balance world.

They are more violent but its not because of their skin colour, its because of the culture they come from. There has been extensive studies on this matter, in the black community in London for example, the more generations of black Londoners that were born here the less likely they are to fall into violent crime. The first generation immigrants are 89% more likely to commit violent crimes.

Lots of people using poverty as an excuse for bad behaviour, does it absolve people of personal responsibility? Most people are underpaid and in the rat race so why dont most people stab each other? Also seeing a lot of people saying we need more youth clubs etc, okay so what happens if the perpetrators don't attend these youth clubs? Oli Dugmore’s ‘argument’ is terrible. Those examples he listed weren’t even close to the same level of magnitude, and most importantly, those cultures are long dead. Black people aren’t inherently going to be prone to crime, but their current culture does encourage it.

No matter how much you increase the legal penalty for carrying a knife, it will never outweigh the fear of being stabbed and killed. Consequently, the logic of deterrence does not work in this instance.

It's amazing how little information about her departure is available. It feels like a deliberate closing of ranks. This station is a broad church with many different stances taken by a number of presenters...but there doesn't feel to be too much solidarity about. I've enjoyed Sangita's excellent contribution. She's been very honest, very direct...and she has proper experience built up in the world of journalism. Nick Ferrari has expressed quite a few views on the opposite end of the spectrum from Sangita- why hasn't he been sanctioned on an equal basis?

I'm black and I think I agree with the caller on the point of it being a cultural thing. While I do listen to rap, it clearly promotes violence and it happens to be all the youths listen to. While more mature minds might not be influenced, the younger or more susceptible youth don't stand a chance.
PS: Obviously it's not all black people or even all youths that listen to that music, but if you check to see if the offenders do listen that type of music, I'm certain you'll find a correlation. It's the same in the US with gangster rap/drill, and in the Caribbean with violent dancehall music.
*sigh* We've had this talking point for 40 years now, and 30 years in this country. Subgenres of music ARE NOT THE MUSIC OR THE CULTURE, especially if those are the ones that are glamourised by mainstream society that does not engage with it except vicariously for the purpose of stigmatisation or voyeurism. This is also separate from the very REAL issue of historical and recent policies of poverty, disadvantage, inequality and managed decline (see Oliver Letwin's blocking of funding for business start ups in the 1980s, or the enrolment of black students in Special schools in the 1970s and early 1980s on the grounds they were "intellectually inferior" - language we are still dealing with now) which feeds into crime, criminality that affects inner cities and similar deprived areas with impacts on young people of ALL backgrounds. Any ingrate telling me white kids or Asian kids do not get involved in crime or knife crime does NOT live in an major town or city and should not be commenting on this issue. Address the material conditions of disadvantaged peoples - the protestations of which the "music" and "culture" ACTUALLY critiques and are ignored as it means dealing with the inequalities being highlighted.
@@JayGriffinblaze Bangladeshi and Pakistani kids are significantly more disadvantaged than black kids, but they aren't responsible for knife crime at the rates these black kids are, so if it isn't a cultural problem, what is the problem?

The credibility of LBC has completely gone with the refusal to allow Sangita back on air following her truthful words on Israel and the IDF . I have always had a lot of time for LBC and many of its programmes but the suspension of Sangita is an all time low .

I am very curious as to why Sangita has disappeared from this channel. I do hope that it is not because some unjust political pressures were prioritised over her talents as a journalist due to her doing her job better than most that i have witnessed. He gives hope, relief from frustrations, and she cool as taboot. Fingers crossed she back sooooon.

You absolutely nail it when you mention poverty.
The more deprived an area is, the more likely it is that such crimes as low level dealing & petty theft will occur. This in turn has a higher likelihood of being accompanied by knife crime. Its a sad fact that some minorities STILL experience more depravity in their living conditions! This is not cultural, it is socio-economical.
