  • John from 'To the garage' shares a recording of his lightly modified Jaguar XK8 exhaust note. He believes it to be the best sounding exhaust note on any car. But then again he is biased. its his car.

    Back boxes are replaced with straight through stainless as are the boxes just before the axle

    I had the full Adamesh setup with both, the rear section aswell the over axle part. Sure it sounded very masculine but it was too "in your face" for my taste. As soon as you touch the throttle, the car starts to bellow. It just never shuts up and i felt very conspicuous. So I kept the over axle kit and fitted the standard rear pipes. Now it sounds very nice without being too tiresome.

      Thanks Monsieur Ruhe . I am going to do some research before making my decision. I do hear you on this. No matter which approach I take the squashed over axle pipes have to go. Once I saw them I couldn’t believe it. Plus it’s a really effective usable power and economy gain. So your set up is in the running👍 are your rear boxes jaguar originals?

    I'm now thinking of getting a 4.2 xk8 just to do this same exact mod, I've heard it with the stage 1 exhaust, but now i absolutely am convinced the stage 2 over axel pipes are the way to go

    Excellent video John .
    Nice sound.
    If I may share what I did to my coupe. I replaced the catalyst to a more "free" ones. Have no problem with the MOT emmisions the sound is amazing roar of a V8 and the most amazing thing is that the car improved on the average mpg consumption .
    Keep those vids coming mate.

    Hi John, I just purchased my first 99' XK8 convertible. I grew up at R.A.F. Chicksands(early 70's). My dad used to take me to car shows around the area. Our favorites were the 60's Jag coupes. I told my dad I'll find a Jaguar someday. I would like very much to modify the car but it's in excellent condition. I like a modified exhaust but I'm going to leave it alone. Our Colorado laws have changed so running free flow cats is illegal now. They have to be CARB compliant. I'm going to have the suspension rebuilt front to back instead. I do enjoy watching your videos because they are very thorough. I just retired from the elevator trade(30 years). Now its time to play and tour with the bad cat. I did enjoy your segment on this subject of exhaust mods. Happy Trails!

    Hi Diogo. Thanks for Watching.
    very minor resonant drone at approx 65 mph in top gear. However it is bearly appreciable and you can easily speed up 5 mph or change down.
    In sport mode it does not occur at all.
    Most of the footage and commentary in my 'XK8 Review. the best V8 sportscar?' video, is shot at 60-70Mph on motorways.
    I know the sound replication via a microphone is not completely accurate but it will reassure that with the top up and cruising, the sound levels are pretty low.

    Hi John, lovely sound. I have a 2001 convertible, but still with the original exhaust, which. I must confess, is just too quiet! Forget tracks. What you need to do, is bring it up to the west coast of Scotland. Fantastic driving roads & few cameras or radar. Plus the scenery is fantastic! Have to say though, east coast a bit different with average speed cams etc.

    • @ToTheGarage

      Good morning Andrew. From a performance poit of view I have a set of straight through Stainless over-axle pipes and straight through stainless tail pipes. this just leaves the two cats and the shared centre box in place. I also have a K&N pannel filter in the original air box. There are links to these in the descriptions of some of my other XK8 videos or via my website www.tothegarage.co.uk. Cosmetically it has extra brightwork. (headlight and taillight surrounds, door handles and mirror caps). I feel as standard they are way too quiet for a high performance V8. but aside from that they dont NEED mods, its just personal taste. I will be lowering mine by 25mm, Moving the front number plate and a few other bits in the near future. The C70 is a fine choice and in many ways the more sensible choice. However 5 minutes behind the wheel in the big V8 cat and im sure I know which one you will WANT. Even if its impossible for me to predict which one you will BUY.
      Check its cold when you get there. See if it starts easily and from Cold. walk a way from a hard to start car as it may be low compression. If the windows are slightly ajar then the battery is/or recently was, flat. (dead easy to resolve but if the seller doesnt know how then its a good barganing chip) If the ABS/traction control light is on, it could cost you £700 plus for a pump if its not dodgy sensors. Early cars are prone to minor rust bubbles on rear wheel arch edges and a square pattern of light rust in either footwell. Anything more than this and a stone chip or two would be unusual and could be signs of old repairs.
      Have a great test drive Andrew.
      I, (and Iam sure other subscribers) would love to know how you got on.
      Best regards
      John

    Hi John, or actually anyone who has the adamesh exhaust installed. Any of you had an issue with registration of your new exhaust? Not sure exactly how it works in UK but in Switzerland where I write from, permitted noise levels are quite strict. I called Adamesh and asked if the exhaust has EU certification, to which I got a response - no. Any of you guys have an idea about the noise level of stage1/2 at 50km/h ?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Daniel
      We don't have to get our exhaust systems sound checked in the UK although there is a maximum legal level. Our only annual check is the MOT and the Adamesh stage 1 and 2 would not warrant more than a comment or advisory (louder exhaust) at worst.
      So afraid I cant help. I do have a stage 1 and 2 that I will be fitting in the next couple of weeks and can share the static Db sound levels with you then. But I have no reliable way of checking at speed

      I honestly haven't had a chance to do any pics, video, or audio either but my brother and I have some plans for the 3rd & pre drunk on the 4th to document everything fully. We're going to delete the hi beams and put 2 ram air funnels in the openings cramming O² down some 3" piping. The system will also include a filter just under the body panel at the original filter box location. And will be Tee'd in but will have a low pressure check valve to prevent a loss and insure she's breathing every cfm she can. Plus side wet weather I can plug the funnels and still have a functional CAI.
      In the lo beam location I'll fitting a pair of Cree 7" lights with hi/lo/driving/signals and white to Amber switchback angel eyes around all 4 openings.
      I'll include pics of that also.
      Love the channel, so far all those tricks with the key, ECU, and gearbox have all worked in the j8.
      By the way, an H-pipe where the resonator is will drop the tone a bit and should lean towards torque.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  3 роки тому

      HI Chris👍 Im assuming you mean XKR. and not an S Type R (Im forever miss typing)
      The stage 1 and two will cost you about £550 total and fitting is a more challenging question. I would suggest that your local exhaust place (kiwi fit or similar) might quote you £100 and then charge you twice that when they realise the XK8 is not an easy car to do an exhaust on. Also they are not used to finessing tail pipes into position, They will just hang it. I would take it to a trusted Independent Garage who will take more care and pride. As a pure guess It could be anywhere from £100 - £300 to fit.
      Assuming they are not trying to retain the old system. I think the quickest it could be done is 2 hours. But it could easily take 4. (which is how long it took me in real time. Remember ive done it twice before / but equally im quite fussy)
      However as I have never paid anyone to fit one, it would be more interesting to hear from some of our fellow subscribers about how much they have paid.
      Anyone prepared to share?

    Your exhaust sounds really good. I have an 04 XKR and had the original large centre muffler removed and an X-Pipe installed instead. Much more depth of sound with more rumble but I'm looking to go for straight through rears deleting the over-axle pipes but leaving one small muffler in place still. Not sure which yet / or which is which (need to research it more). Lots of people have done similar setups and some have complained too droney etc at motorway speed. My X-pipe has made a huge difference but to be honest the sound of yours is the type of sound I'd like to achieve. Mine's a coupe, so I should really record it as it's hard to really tell I suppose, it sounds ok when I floor it windows down...till the whine of the supercharger kicks in and any rear noise is harder to determine. I know it won't be the same as yours with my intended setup but I suppose I just want to experiment first and see how it goes. Leaving one small muffler in place on each side. I want to get some new springs H & R ones to lower her 25mm all round. Freight to New Zealand is as much as the product itself! Had my car just over 2 years now, had a few typical issues when I got her, cruise control switch stuffed, battery dodgy causing all sorts of erroneous errors. Needed a fuel injector...ouch off comes supercharger, needed seal kit from UK, that hurt the pocket! I still have a couple of issues, after an hour and only occasionally my trans goes into limp home mode in 4th or maybe 5th gear (6 speed), restart fixes that straight away. Guessing electrical something or other but that could be one of heaps of things from what I've read so far. Also DSC fault but no biggie still drivable, again restart clears that...I replaced all ABS sensors to no avail, maybe a reluctor ring or wiring but can't retrieve a code. So that idea shelved for now. Like your videos mate, keep then coming.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  5 років тому

      Hi Trevor. Thanks for the kind words and interesting input. I have just commented on another subscribers enquiry who has the limp home mode on the gearbox (see comments on secrets of the XK8 / R episode 7)
      I think on an R the interior sound will always be dominated by the Supercharger Whine (an intoxicating sound in itself)
      I Think that deleting all the boxes is not really an option for road use as it would render the car pretty antisocial.
      I think I would delete the boxes prior to the axle as you already have a non standard centre section and definately get replacement or delete over axle pipe as that is worth up to 15hp over the standard flattened unit. having your only boxes at te very back will minimise effort and expense if you decide that they (or the sound) needs tweaking / replacing later.
      The site below has some good pictures of various exhaust set ups on XKR's
      www.eapj.com/indexservice_exhaust_upgrades.html
      I look forward to one day seeing/hearing a video clip of your x piped beauty.

      @@ToTheGarage Thanks so much for your help John. I read that info on Billy Z's. Mine is a bit different in that I wasn't doing any manual shifting at all, it's in drive only. It's quite a rarity actually as it only happens on what I call long drives (over an hour is long to me with my bad back). The last time it went into limp home was coming up to a roundabout that was at the top of a hill...I didn't really need to brake as the incline was quite steep so she slowed of her own accord. Did brake eventually to a complete stop giving way to traffic. Then that's when I noticed the sluggish slow start like the car is overloaded...it's a horrible sensation actually as you start off in like 5th gear I believe. That's when I looked at the dash and noticed the words gearbox fault. I don't drive too far so it's a little on the backburner as it's not constantly troubling me. The DCS is annoying mostly. I purchased an OBDII from the states that bluetoothes to app on your phone. It didn't provide much info but I don't think I've tested it well enough as yet. My tests were parked - plugged in obdii and looking for old codes. I'm guessing any old codes keep clearing or the codes are not being logged to memory and only appear while driving. I need to plug her in and do a decent run I guess and view the live data instead to see how that goes. This is the second OBDII I've bought as this one seemed better being live to app etc. That exhaust link shows exactly which one I'm after being the half under axle for 525. I have been considering have my local exhaust bloke fabricate it but it won't be stainless nor have mandrel bends. I'd prefer stainless of course. We all know how restricted that over axle squished pipe is currently...that seems to have been an afterthought perhaps of Jag to just cram it in that space somehow by squeezing it. One 'mechanic' told me it made no difference as the exhaust volume was the same...my thoughts were different, the shape determines volumetric flow efficiency and this is obviously restrictive hence less efficient. I'm no scientist but I'd like to think I'm not that stupid either. Needless to say, I haven't used that mechanic again. Back to the trans, that same 'mechanic' said they are sealed for life and you just replace the whole thing etc etc...you know where I'm going with this. I have been thinking of having the filter and pan changed as I'm not sure if it's been done on my car. I have seen it done on youtube by a shop in the UK. If I had a lift I would attempt it myself. When I do go manual it pulls and changes very well and smoothly up to the 4th -5th change. There is a thud or clunk that happens under load in this step, I don't know if it's a bearing or what, it seems to come from the rear. It kind of seems to be a slight slip into that gear during the thud or clunk sound. I don't generally push her in that range now. I must say this does not cause the limp home scenario either. Thanks again

      Thanks for the Story Trevor.
      Yes its amazing how many people tell you the trans is a sealed unit that can't be repaired.. The reality is its just as serviceable and repairable as any other auto box. The legend comes out of Jaguars statement that the ATF oil should not need changing for the life of the car. (which turned out to be rather optimistic!) then not providing an easy way for the average owner to change the oil.
      Any decent transmission specialist would be able to diagnose and repair any fault you have if it is not just lumpy Oil.👍

      I have an 00 XKR. I deleted the center muffler with an x-pipe about 3 years ago. Liked it. But decided to go for a Minas Gallery (California) exhaust, aftermarket intake & filter. Much faster with much louder supercharger whine. The exhaust itself is not louder, decibel wise. However, it is deeper. Overall, I'm very happy.

    These cars do have a proper note and sound with some exhaust. The best sounding V8 from this same era though is any Mustang 4.6 V8 weather 2 valve or 4 valve!

    Not bad! All V8s should be unmuted! Iv a 2001 wj jeep grand cherokee 4.7 V8 with sports pipe! Heaven for me would be the xkr, red, open pipes with the supercharger whine!!!!!!

    IMO, too loud, all you hear is the fart-box and no engine whine, just overpowering exhaust. Jaguars should have less babble and not the glass pack muscle car note. Thanks, just my 2 cents.

    Does anyone know the diameter of the 97 jag xk8 exhaust pipes? I was told it was 2.5" . I purchased an x pipe for the center delete and 30" glass packs to get more of the modern xk sound and performance but since getting cancer a year ago I have got to depend on someone else to work on my jag... not happy with that but thats not another story... if anyone can help with the size from the cat backwards it would be greatly appreciated!

    Not the most refined, a little dated and shallow. The later model XK's, the 4.2 and the 5.2 supercharged XKS are much better.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  3 роки тому

      Agreed. Its very difficult to get a realistic sound recording of how a car sounds to the driver. An interior lapel mic picks up little beyond a small amount of wind noise and induction roar. And yet The driver perceives the exhaust as well.

    Beg to differ. Two poorly recorded examples I preferred: ua-cam.com/video/iC6X-xgwqso/v-deo.html [MGB V8 with headers, 2 glass packs, 2 resonators] and a 67 Sport Fury convertible with the built-in resonance advantage of being one of the longest cars ever built! ua-cam.com/video/ANckGilNHVI/v-deo.html
