Very interested in watching this build. I just picked up a 62 Ranchero rustbucket to restore, and can use all the tips you can give me. Love your channel.
Right, I put a 65 grill on my 64 (cause it was "better" than the dented 64 that came with the "car") and had fit issues, i.e. it did not fit without "persuasion", also the 64 headlight "doors" (weird name for those!!) won't fit a 65 grill either without "persuasion"!!
I know you’ve done a show on blasting, so it’s not like I’m giving you new info, but from personal experience I found plastic media followed by sand on the badly rusted areas to be the least destructive method. Plastic doesn’t risk warping the good metal because it generates little heat, and then when they do the sand pass they can stand back and hit the whole car with sand to pull off any plastic residue and give paint/primer a tooth onto which to bite.
Believe it or not this thing is a tip toe through the tulips compared to the 62 unibody f100 crown Vic frame swap I'm doing right now. I sealed off the cowel on my 67 Fairlane for the same reason.. didn't much feel like messing with it. It's not a problem ...it's a project ! 😀
We're talking to a buddy that is about to start that Crown Vic swap project. He moves too fast though, won't wait for us to come and film sometimes. Oddly the cowls are OK on this one.
@@AutoRestoMod I just read what I wrote and think I'll clarify a little...I am speaking to the condition of the unibody...which is roasted...and made it for me a great candidate for the frame swap. I wasn't trying to knock the difficulty of your project and hope you didn't take it that way...you have your hands full for sure.
This is cool! I have a 64 that ive been working on for a while! I did the mustang ii front end, 302, 8.8 rear end, wooden bed, patina paint job. Its just a fun little work car for me! Its a little ways back on my channel if you wanted to check it out! Good luck with yours!
Cool project. We are working on 65 sprint. Our rock guard was lost. Found a new one painted it and installed it, then the original was found. If you are interested in it let me know.
As to the cowl close off I'll give that a firm maybe. Freakishly the cowls are good on this one. I think the little Ranchero sat in the grass too long out in Texas, add to that the carpets getting wet from a leak (or two) in the rear seat pan area under the bed and poof. Rust.
Yeah, I thought about that, but the four speed that is in the rancher is perhaps the WORST transmission Ford used: The Danginham. And the 200 is -aknockin'. The 260 is in fine shape and runs out really well. Honestly, it is just easier to get it going since we are pulling the 260 out of the hardtop to replace it with a built 347. We will be doing a 200 build on the engine and passing it on to a friend who wants a 6 in his Mustang.
@@AutoRestoMod That is great to hear. I am just getting started on a 67 mustang with a 6 and want to keep it that way. Not a lot of content oh how to upgrade performance on them
Did a 64 'Chero restoration from '06 to about '10, with lots of help from my car-guy friends (i.e. I watched them work on it a lot!!). Nice now, newly re-built 200 six, electronic ignition, with 5 speed (from a 90's 'Stang) conversion (goes 70+ on freeways) and mostly stock otherwise. Runs great but wow what an absolute "Odyssey" to get it that way; it was a POS looking thing like this one. Was White, now painted Ford's "Calypso Blue Metallic" (now there's a color from the past!!). Good luck, you'll need it but it will be an "adventure". Check Ranchero USA web page, forum; they were a lot of help along the way!! :D
I might be able to help you out with a set of pedals. I still have the manual pedals in my 63 comet that has been swapped to a c4. I plan to put in automatic pedals that I pulled from a 65 falcon. There's no provision for a brake light switch, but I'm sure you could come up with something. The car currently has a switch mounted to the bottom of the steering column. I don't have any of the clutch linkage.
To me this truck sounds like it,s gonna be Col. Mustard,s little brother as in while we are here we might as well fix this also. i think this will be a cool project ,because you just don,t hardly see Ranchero,s at least not where i live.
AutoRestoMod Car Restoration Modification. just make sure it has a posi . in it i have heard that teenagers have been known to show out some. But i never did that when i was younger. lol. as far as the radio goes, i would put in a stock radio. since it seems most people young or old listen to music on their phone. but that,s just me. it will also be the coolest car in the high school parking lot.
@@AutoRestoMod can't quite remember, but think got mine from a stang parts store, new and complete to bolt in. Got the components at least for falcons on these parts catalogs like car crafters and macs!
Well, Jeff..... All I can say is..... "While your there"......lol Seriously though,,, You've done this enough to know,,,, tackle 1 task at a time and stick with it... Put Logan to work on Her and you be the teacher, as much as you can....
I've poked at it from the bottom and it is pretty sound Most of the issue is where water pooled in the corners. We will probably order the full pan and hack it up for what we need.
Please Jeff, don't blow a gasket when you are a pushing heavy cars. Take care my brother. Also, I just bought a 72 Maverick Sprint. The one that has the Olympic theme. Oddly enough the car has a factory 302 with 3-on-the-tree. Strange. ..........
Almost bought one off the dealer's lot in Rantoul, Ill. when I was stationed there in 73. IIRC, you got a three speed or a C4. The one I was looking at had a factory floor shift, that was optional. Wife wanted something else, and we ended up with a 72 Duster, and that car soured me on anything/everything connected with Chrysler ever since.......
Oh no. We have many more fish to fry. Sway bars, factory original '73-'79 disc brake install, interior, bed restoration. Lots to do. Just need to move on to some other things for a bit and put the old man back to work.
Jeff, I see a ton of time and money to get this ole Ranchero put back together... if possible. Have you thought about finding one in better shape and maybe use this poor thing as a donor car??
Well, his money is short. I can find them for $3,000 in decent shape but nothing any better that this down in his price range. Plus, we don't buy cars like normal people, we buy cars that need stuff done so we can teach it. Perverted, I know.
@@AutoRestoMod You bought this car???? for money?? LOL. :D Seriously though, I bought mine for a grand in 06, ran and drove, not well but it did, and was mostly "complete", and a CA car, not a lot of rust, but eventually, it needed "everything"!! :D
Yes. Most old cars are rusty to some degree or other. The Ranchero is 56 years old...most cars this old will have "the cancer" unless they were garaged their whole life. Lets see what your Nissan Frontier looks like in 56 years...
This one will keep you busy for awhile. Excited to follow along.

Plastic media is a good option. We're also looking at dustless.
