Vince actually started this song when his buddy Keith Whitley passed, but he couldn't finish it. Several years later when Vince's brother died he sat down and finished it. He and Patty Loveless also did this song at George Jones' funeral service.
Two things. 1) Wish you could have played this song with Patty Loveless and Vince Gill at George Jones's Funeral. 2) Vince Gill is easily in top 5 of all country guitar players.
Not just country guitar players. The rock world considers him to be a great player as well and he has had offers to join some very popular bands and it is why the Eagles asked him to replace Fry. Clearly, Vince is a great player. But he may be an even better man.
The original with Patty Loveless IMHO is better. Allison is beautiful on this but Patty complimented Vince better I thought. Allison blended but Patty stood out without competing.
If you go to the original video for the song (with Ricky and Patty Loveless on harmonies), there are thousands of stories in the comments, from people who have lost loved ones and they had this song either played or sung at their funerals and how it helped get them through some really tough times.

I've seen Vince sing this song at several celebrity's funerals. He sang them all so beautifully at all but one. But that one was definitely the most touching. It was George Jones' funeral, and he couldn't make it through. George was like a father and mentor to Vince. Patti Loveless was there to fill in where Vince struggled.
I had this played at my husband's funeral. It could have been about my husband. He had his demons but was a very good man. He served his country 20 years and his community 17 years. He was a very good Father to our daughters. He always did what he had to to take care of us all. One day I will see him again.
He originally wrote this for Keith Whitley, who passed in the mid 80's. They were best buddies . He had trouble finishing it, then his brother passed some yrs. later & finished it. Keith had a big hit called "No stranger to the Rain". It's in the first verse of this song. This is in NYC. Carnagie Hall He originally did this song with Ricky Scaggs & Patty Loveless.
Thank you! I was about to post the same info! I live about half an hour from where Keith lived...he's never been forgotten. Hope all is well with you and your loved ones!
Ricky Skaggs also was in the group "The Cinch Mountain Boys" under Ralph Stanley, along with Keith Whitley....so this is personal for Ricky Skaggs too.
We lost my brother at 32 to an aneurism and played Good Ride Cowboy by Garth as we left the funeral home and everyone left with a smile. At the grave sight we played Go Rest High and everyone left with a tear in their eye. Both songs fit the situation perfectly. Great reaction guys!
Vince tried to sing this song at George Jones' funeral. He could not make it all the way through. Patti Loveless, the one who sang with him in the original video. Ricky Scaggs was in the video, too. But, Patti had to take over for him. She did an amazing job. It was a very emotional thing to watch.
I’m the same way. The second the song starts, tears are rolling down my face. Home Free did a rendition of this that is amazing. Nothing beats Vince’s version, but theirs is just amazing.
Over my 56 years I've enjoyed my share of rock and metal, but I must say that Vince Gill is an American Classic. This song gets to me every time I hear it. Great choice.
That's a good song!! But, it lies like a rug. LOL Even God's Word says in Jeremiah 16:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" (NIV)
Ok, the song is phenomenal, and I really think y'all will love it. BUT, fair warning the music video is likely gonna irritate Keith to absolutely no end, which makes me wanna see it even more lol!
Growing up in the 70's and 80's, I am partial to my Southern Rock and Metal, hair bands, etc. But there is something about country music you won't find in other genres they way you do here. When it is time to slow down and let the feelz rise up, songs like this is what it is all about. Rock/Metal can have you banging your head driving with the window down on a nice day but when you need to connect, country can reach in and hug your heart like a warm blanket and give you comfort.
I really do appreciate y’all reacting to this song, but I have yet to watch the video. This song makes me cry every time. It’s done that to me since my dad passed on back on April 4, 2017. I will change the song or turn the radio off. That’s how much this song gets to me. Vince Gill was one of my dad’s favorite artists.
My uncle died in a car accident in May of 1995. This song was released in August of 1995. I remember so clearly the first time it came on the radio. I had to pull into a parking lot and sit because I was crying so hard. To this day, it still gets me.
Vince Gill joined The Eagles in 2017. He’s a legend. Also, an underrated guitar player. Also, he initially wrote the song for Keith Whitley who passed away in ‘89. (No stranger to the rain is a reference to a song of his). When his brother passed he finished it for them both.
He has one called nobody answered when I called your name. With patty loveless who was his original back up singer in most of his songs including Go Rest High
Such a beautiful song. I cry every time I hear it. Even more so, that I have lost so many family and friends in the last few years. Vince Gill is an amazing singer.
hey Bourbon Country Reacts and i like Vince Gill Go Rest High on that Mountain we play for my dad i lost 17 years on december 27 2005 and i lost my grandpa on october 16 2013 and we to have for my family
When my dad first heard this song many moons ago, he told mom that he wanted it sung at his funeral and 7 years ago we honored the request and a family friend sang it.

The emotion is even greater when he sings it for George Jones funeral. Home Free also does this a cappella, and I wonder if Vince regrets letting the do it.
At George Jones' memorial at the Opry he sang this with Scaggs and Patty Loveless and he broke down sad bad because he and George were good friends. Patty had to kiud of carry it for a little while during the performance.
The day my Mom and Dad had to bury their 1st born (my hero my brother) at the age of 39 yrs old they had this played at his services... Than we played this at my Dad's services last year...
There's another video of Vince, Patty Loveless & Ricky Skaggs singing this song at the Ryman Auditorium (totally empty). I hope you'll be able to view that on your own. You'll really get the full impact of this song then. Another great song of Vince's is "When I Call Your Name". It was his first hit. Patty Loveless joins him in the chorus beautifully. Very haunting. His voice is so velvety smooth.
In the 70's, Vince Gill was with Pure Prairie League. They sang "AMY", A few lines, "Amy what you gonna do? I think I'm in love with you, for a while maybe longer if I do.
So I always like this song but last October this song has a deep connection with me now. A week before his 36th birthday my brother passed away from a heart attack. It was so unexpected to us.
Vince Gill's song Go Rest High On That Mountain it's just so beautiful I asked you to watch Vince Gill Go Rest High On That Mountain George Jones funeral trust me it is so emotional
Recommend Vince's "When I Call Your Name" from 1990. Reached #2, but won a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance, as well as CMAs for both Single and Song of the Year.
Vince Gill has been around since the 80s. So this is a deep, deep rabbit hole. But, well worth the trip. I would suggest Pocket Full of Gold and Never knew Lonely just for starters.
You guys have got to check out Vince Gill singing "When I Call Your Name." Beautiful harmony with Patti Lovelace. Make sure you do the official video. Really enjoy you guys.
Saw Vince Gill in a small venue in Vegas years ago. Instead of doing his 90 minutes then ending, he said he was enjoying himself so much he wanted to keep going. He played for 4 hours!
I loved that. It's such a beautiful song and has helped hundreds of thousands of people in their time of need. Keith said it looked like the Grand Ole Opry, actually it was the Grand Ole Opry playing at Carnegie Hall in New York. So they had the famous circle I believe, and the Grand Ole Opry mic stands. Vince Gill has stated two things I wanted to mention... 1) He started writing the song when another Bluegrass/Country artist Keith Whitley passed away. The lines You weren't afraid to face the devil , you were no stranger to the rain is two-fold: on one side it's borrowing the lyrics of Keith Whitley's song I'm No Stranger To The Rain in a tribute to him, and the other side is about his brother, who was in a severe car accident, the result being brain damage. Though he struggled, he kept going with life until he passed in 1993, 25 years after the accident. Vince wrote part of the song after Keith Whitley passed in 1989, but shelved it unfinished. When his brother died 4 years later, he finished it and was apprehensive about sharing it, but was coached into recording it in 1995. Ricky Skaggs and patty Loveless are on the recording, and Alison Krauss sang and played live now and then. 2) One quote from Vince a while go during an interview was about learning when NOT to play or sing and the importance of that lesson. Here it's demonstrated: He played rhythm guitar with no lead guitar picking for which he is very known for, but he let Ricky play his mandolin and Alison play her fiddle and backed off from the mic to let them do their part. Such professionalism....He knows when to play, and when not to play and sing. He didn't want his picking or singing to overshadow their great voices or instruments. A true class act in my book.
Loved your reaction!!! Knew you'd love this song, it's beautifully heartbreaking. "I still believe in you" and "Whenever you come around" are also really great songs by Vince Gill.
This one played at my sister's funeral, and Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton's "When I get where I'm going" at my brother's. You are correct, played at many many funerals.
This was played at two of my relatives funerals. Our family cemeteries are on top of mountains in WV. This is a song that brings the tears for me. Til the next. ☺
@@BourbonCountryReacts Carrie Underwood recently sang Go Rest High on That Mountain at the Grand Ole Opry for a tribute to Vince Gill. It was fabulous...it brought Vince to tears.
That was Carnegie Hall. I had this performed at my brother's funeral. To lighten the mood, you need to listen to Vince's "It's Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night that chew your ass all day long". Also, When I Call Your Name.
I thought Dustin was going to lose it. I've heard this at countless funerals. I believe this was at Carnegie Hall. Keith Vince Gill can also shreed a guitar. If this song doesn't grab you ain't got a handle. Vince sings this at a lot of the stars funerals
Thank you both. One of the most heart touching songs. Vince has a number of great songs. The two of you were talking about rock being confused, and then maybe country. Allison has work with Robert Plant They recently just released their second album. Again thank you for this reaction tonight. 🙏🎶🎵
Vince Gill played with Pure Prairie League and recently with the Eagles. The first verse was written after Keith Whitley passed. A couple lines referenced Whitley's songs. The second verse was written after Gill's brother passed. Recently he added a 3rd verse. Rickey Scaggs has a song called Country Boy that showcase top musicianship from every member in the band, including Rickey on an acoustic guitar.
All 3 of them are phenomenal on their own, together they are even better. Alison has 27 Grammys to her name plus countless IBMA awards and others. Ricky Skaggs is HUGE in both country and bluegrass. He promised Bill Monroe that he would do everything he could to further bluegrass music. He has concentrated solely on Bluegrass for the last 20 years. Then there is Vince. He started his singing career with a pop band named Pure Prairie League. There is a live version of Pure Prairie League doing Aimee. He had a fantastic solo career and is now touring with The Eagles. Alison was introducing Vince at one of her shows as he was doing a duet with her; She stated that the first time she heard Vince sing she though it was a woman. He did sing this song at his mentors funeral, George Jones, with Patty Loveless. He could not keep it together vocally.
Before we did this video, I had no idea Vince was with Pure Prairie League. "Amy" is one of my favorite songs. Talk about a groove. I find myself listening to PPL's "Amy," followed by the Outlaws "Green Grass and High Tides" back to back. - Keith
You just did a reaction to George Jones singing "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Vince Gill was a dear friend to George Jones and was his protégé, when George died in 2013 Vince Gill sang this song at his funeral which was held at the Grand Ole Opry on May 2, 2013. Vince got a little emotional about half way through, it is still one of the most emotional and memorable performances I've ever seen. I don't know if there was a dry eye in the house when he finished. A singer named Patty Loveless joined him in harmony instead of Alison Krauss, here is the link ua-cam.com/video/l11oCvBxnQ0/v-deo.html
"One More Last Chance" by Vince Gill is an upbeat song. It is based on a true story about George Jones driving his John Deere to the store at the height of his alcoholism battle. Give it a listen, I think you will get a kick out of it!!
Wonderful job on the music reaction the Vince Gill is amazing and Alison krauss and Ricky skaggs of course are also amazing there's another version of this outlet out there with Vince Gill and Patty loveless and Ricky skaggs that is equally amazing and yes the general reaction to an exceptional performance of go rest high on the mountain is met with dead silence and all as it should be you've mentioned on several occasions that you really appreciate feisty female singers and I know that Loretta Lynn has come up I was one of the ones who brought her up but she's got a song that you would probably laugh until you cried for one thing about Loretta Lynn is when she writes a song she rides her life and one of the songs that she wrote and sang was you a woman enough to take my man and it is well worth a listen.
Please add Clint Black to your list. "Killin Time", "When my Ship Comes In", "Burn one Down" are all really great songs ( he has many those are just a few). He also does a cover "Desperado" originally by The Eagles which is pretty D*M good as well.
Definitely check out his big breakthrough hit from 1990, "When I Call Your Name." Other great ones from Vince: "Pocket Full Of Gold," "Never Knew Lonely," "Look At Us," "Take Your Memory With You," "Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away," "No Future In The Past," "Trying To Get Over You."
Vince Gill has never been underrated. The guys a guitar legend! In the 70’s he was frontman for the country rock band Pure Prairie League, in the 80’s the Notorious Cherry Bombs, he went solo in 83. In 2010 The Time Jumpers who I’m not familiar with and The Eagles in 2017. Recorded over 20 studio albums, charted over 40 singles on US Billboard and has sold more than 26 million albums. He has “18” CMA Awards including 2 Entertainer of the Year Awards, 5 male vocalist of the yr., 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other male country artist. He’s in The Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2016 he was inducted into the Guitar Center Rock Walk by Joe Walsh. In 2017 Vince Gill and Deacon Frey were hired by the Eagles to fill the spot of Glenn Frey. So when someone says he’s an underrated guitarist, that’s poppy squash. He’s anything but.
My husband died 13 years ago and when I was choosing songs to be played at his funeral, this is the first song that I knew I had to have played. I attended about three other funerals that same year and Go Rest High was played at every one of those funerals. I understand that Amazing Grace used to be the number one song requested to be played at funerals until this song came out and then it took over the number one slot. Don't know if it still holds number one or whether AG has once again taken over that place. I love Alison Krauss, but I prefer Patty Loveless singing with Vince on this song.
Ok I need to be honest, this Bourbon is the first, I personally, have seen you review that made me feel like "I NEED a bottle of this"!! Good Job yall!! Lol I'm definitely enjoying your channel:)
Wonderful reaction, glad you enjoyed your visit to Hotel Tango Distillery. This song was played at my little brothers funeral, there were many years that I couldn't listen to it, but now I enjoy listening to the different versions, it is such a lovely song..
My Dad has done this at funerals ever since he found the tune. I can't tell you how many times he pulled his truck up to a gravesite and popped this instrumental track into a Player and sang it.
@@BourbonCountryReacts Not so much now---(Alzheimers DX late last year). He retired after 50 years 8n music ministry. People kept requesting this, and, at times, our only CD player was in his truck! Nobody complained, either. 👍
This song is amazing, and I can guarantee you, hearing this song with Amazing Grace on bagpipes and Taps being played will break the hardest of hearts.
Vince Gill is now touring with the eagles playing guitar and singing the parts that Glen Frey would have sang. He’s extremely humbled by being accepted into the band.
Vince Gill sang this with Patti Lovelace and I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. You might want to check it out but have your handkerchiefs ready.
Loved it, loved your reaction. But I'm surprised by 2 things, 1 that there aren't more request for Vince, the man has 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other Country Male Artist and 18 CMA awards. His gorgeous high tenor is just, something you didn't know your soul needed to hear...until you heard it. He's kind of an OG. The 2nd thing is that Keith you've not heard of Vince Gill because once again out of the Country World comes another massive Guitar player, actually Vince can play just about any "Stringed" instrument. But he's actually been inducted into "The Guitar Center Rock Walk" and his induction was done by Joe Walsh of the Eagles, who he played with for a while. Vince plays on tons of peoples albums, not just country but rock, bluegrass, contemporary christian, etc. He's a pretty big deal in Country Music. This song is one of my favs, as are "When I Call Your Name" and "High Lonesome Sound w/Allison Krauss and Union Station" and "I Still Believe in You" and a ton more. You can't really go wrong with Vince Gill.
This is how the requests currently look for Vince, including yours: 5 When I call your name 3 No place that far 2 Oklahoma Swing 2 Killer Guitar Player 2 I still believe in you 1 That’s my story 1 Little Lisa Jane 1 Its hard to kiss the lips 1 one more last chance 1 Whenever you come around 1 Pocket full of gold 1 High Lonesome Sound 1 Never knew lonely 1 Give me one more last chance
@@BourbonCountryReacts That's My Story is Colin Raye. "Killer Guitar Player" is actually Oklahoma Borderline. (THAT'S A MUST.) If you do "It's Hard to Kiss the Lips," find the official music video. It's hilarious.
this was my mom's favorite song, she passed away in July. This song makes me cry but it's such a beautiful song. Have a request for ya, a country song like you've never seen before, Brantly Gilbert's The worst country song of all time. there's a lyric video and an official video, either is fine.
Ricky Skaggs was also a wiz on a lot of instruments. His song "Country Boy" has a lot of instrumentals in it and video is cool. He also did "Uncle Pen".

I'll add a vote for the mention of when I get where I'm going -Dustin
This was played at two of my relatives funerals. Our family cemeteries are on top of mountains in WV. This is a song that brings the tears for me. Til the next. ☺
Beautiful harmonies.
Completely agree. - Keith
@@BourbonCountryReacts Carrie Underwood recently sang Go Rest High on That Mountain at the Grand Ole Opry for a tribute to Vince Gill. It was fabulous...it brought Vince to tears.
He also has a beautiful song called “when I call your name” with Patti Lovelace
That was Carnegie Hall. I had this performed at my brother's funeral. To lighten the mood, you need to listen to Vince's "It's Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night that chew your ass all day long". Also, When I Call Your Name.
I thought Dustin was going to lose it. I've heard this at countless funerals. I believe this was at Carnegie Hall. Keith Vince Gill can also shreed a guitar. If this song doesn't grab you ain't got a handle. Vince sings this at a lot of the stars funerals
Vince also was in the band Pure Prairie League
Thank you both. One of the most heart touching songs. Vince has a number of great songs. The two of you were talking about rock being confused, and then maybe country. Allison has work with Robert Plant They recently just released their second album. Again thank you for this reaction tonight. 🙏🎶🎵
Vince is an amazing singer, songwriter and musician
This song was played at my Grandpa and uncles funeral. This song has always made me remember them it is very sad but also happy.
Added a vote for that one -Dustin
Chills and tears! All our Angels in Heaven at Christmas!
We played it at my mothers funeral. I listen to it a lot because she loved it so much.
This one and Alabama's angels among us were the two songs played at my 7mth olds funeral
The version live with Patty Loveless he breaks down a few times and couldnt finish, so she jadbto...Its a tear jerker
- Keith
The Reason I wanted to watch this reaction is because we played this song at my mothers funeral in 2005
You just did a reaction to George Jones singing "He Stopped Loving Her Today".
Vince started in the bluegrass, gospel then he was with the group PURE PRAIRIE LEAGUE it was awesome.
Beautiful
Agreed.
My 10 year old nephew hung himself in 96 that was played at his funeral thank you for that 😥
"One More Last Chance" by Vince Gill is an upbeat song. It is based on a true story about George Jones driving his John Deere to the store at the height of his alcoholism battle. Give it a listen, I think you will get a kick out of it!!
I've added that to our list -Dustin
Added a vote for that one -Dustin
Please add Clint Black to your list. "Killin Time", "When my Ship Comes In", "Burn one Down" are all really great songs ( he has many those are just a few). He also does a cover "Desperado" originally by The Eagles which is pretty D*M good as well.
Added those to the list! -Dustin
This was my mom's favorite song and it was the one of the songs we played at her funeral in 2008
I love love this song.. his voice is gorgeous.
This song makes me so sad! We played it at my Papaw's funeral in 1996!
Vince Gill is one of the top guitar players ever !!!
I was at one recently where this one was played, along with "I'll Fly Away." - Keith
His wife Amy grant is a big influence on my singing. She’s a beautiful artist too.
I didn't know he was married to Amy Grant. - Keith
Hotel Tango does good stuff. We really did enjoy our visit. But I can see how this song could pluck at some raw emotions. - Keith
My Dad has done this at funerals ever since he found the tune. I can't tell you how many times he pulled his truck up to a gravesite and popped this instrumental track into a Player and sang it.
I can absolutely see that. - Keith
I've seen some of those performances. He fits right in. - Keith
Vince Gill sang this with Patti Lovelace and I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. You might want to check it out but have your handkerchiefs ready.
This was at Carnegie Hall but a much better feels version is him and Patty loveless at George Jones Funeral
You should check out the version of the song with Patty Loveless
This is how the requests currently look for Vince, including yours:
5 When I call your name
3 No place that far
2 Oklahoma Swing
2 Killer Guitar Player
2 I still believe in you
1 That’s my story
1 Little Lisa Jane
1 Its hard to kiss the lips
1 one more last chance
1 Whenever you come around
1 Pocket full of gold
1 High Lonesome Sound
1 Never knew lonely
1 Give me one more last chance
@@BourbonCountryReacts That's My Story is Colin Raye. "Killer Guitar Player" is actually Oklahoma Borderline. (THAT'S A MUST.) If you do "It's Hard to Kiss the Lips," find the official music video. It's hilarious.
Vince wrote and sung this song at his brothers funeral😇😇
This performance was at Carnegie Hall. That was the hallowed venue he mentioned.
I was pretty sure I saw "Opry" written on some of the posts in the vid. Could be mistaken, however. - Keith
Beautiful!!
this was my mom's favorite song, she passed away in July. This song makes me cry but it's such a beautiful song. Have a request for ya, a country song like you've never seen before, Brantly Gilbert's The worst country song of all time. there's a lyric video and an official video, either is fine.
Added a vote for that one -Dustin
Ricky Skaggs was also a wiz on a lot of instruments. His song "Country Boy" has a lot of instrumentals in it and video is cool. He also did "Uncle Pen".
Added votes for those -Dustin
There’s a version of this with Patty Loveless and I believe I read Vince started writing this song when Keith Whitley died.
