I absolutely love growing tomatoes 🍅 I was caught off guard one year and the temp dipped early low at night, so I gathered the tomatoes up, and put old Christmas lights around them on their cages , then covered them with a sheet. It worked! Lol. It also looked quite festive on my patio for a couple of days 😂. Love your videos, so keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing the progress of your tomatoes
🤣🤣🤣🤣 that’s a unique solution
So who is out sowing tomatoes?
You can share your pics with all of us from your Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #GrowAlongWithEli
Their outside from December in bottles with other plants that have popped out but tomatoes still nothing
I am doing a second round as insurance. I have a habit of killing plants in the hardening off stage 😢 lol I guess if by some miracle they all survive , my neighbors can share the joy. love how thorough you're being, loads of details 🎉
Ahhhhhhhh
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I have tried tomato growing so many times. The closest I got were about five berries that had split because of the wet weather. I love your relaxed style, just like you are talking to friends and giving so much valuable information. Like your previous commenter, I am so happy to find a Scottish channel and someone who understands the peculiar timing of everything. Thank you so much for sharing. (new subscriber!)
We love to have all the new Scottish folk with us 🥰🥰🥰
Ok let’s see if I can help, cause this is a bit older now.
Last year I grew heaps in the garden… yup we were sick of tomatoes…
So maybe try this playlist… it has lots in there that might be useful but will defo be interesting (who doesn’t like a good nosey) 😂😂😂
ua-cam.com/play/PLjhUBZdMh-4nPzdffSSKzEX1vAvEJpn8g.html&si=DTSyopuvNKbo9w6C
I use the top our fridge to germinate our seeds. Warmest place in the kitchen.
You know, loads of folk use the top of the fridge, our fridge is way to high, I can’t reach 😂🤣😂🤣
I love that you literally drank "compost tea" on camera. Thanks for sharing your information. I love hearing about what you are doing in the garden.
I don’t think many gardeners have survived with out getting half the garden in their tea at some point… and not the deliberate kind either 😀😂😀😂
I’m so chuffed. I already ordered dwarf tomato seeds! I will plant them as soon as they arrive!
Grow along with Eli, here I come.
Wooohooooo what cha order Norma?????
Thankyou for your video's. I moved to Scotland from south east England many moons ago but have only just started to grow things again due to my increasing herd of lettuce piranha's (also known as Guineapigs). I found over the last couple of years or so that the growing seasons are quite different and really appreciated your knowledge about when to grow certain plants as any experience I got when I was young is now invalid due to different growing region.
Glad to be of help
Worth remembering though that your season might be completely different from mine. So worth keeping your own weather and temperature records. You’d be surprised how different the areas in Scotland can be
Loved the vlog Eli and yes I will be growing along, i have sowed mini bel, Tom thumb, gardeners pearl and ola polka.. especially loved the bit with Kate, subscribe and comment tee-shirt 😀
It’s going to be so exciting to see how we all get on
Feels so calming to watch this video, as if I'm having a cuppa in your garden with you. Thank you!
I’m so glad Flourish, that is the point, we want you guy to just chill and enjoy our garden with us
My tomatoes have just come up!
woooohooooooooo Do you grow them outdoors? Not sure how Bristol sits weather wise... closer to us rather than down south?
I got my greenhouse a month ago and I have a space heater tonight. I have a freeze warning. It’s holding up nicely so far. Expected temps by 2 am 30° and right now my greenhouse is 67.3° (my starts have been down to 50 by now so we’re 👍 ok!) it’s 49° outside. You’ve been an enormous help and watching your channel is one of those things that makes me happy! 😁
Ohhhh I’m so glad we’re helping Carly 😻😻😻
Hi Eli, I've been watching your show for so long and I'm not sure I've ever commented - shame on me! Although most of my tomatoes are up and growing a few have failed to thrive so I'm starting them again because I really want them. My guess is once they're all planted outside for a month or two there will be very little difference. My parents were both born and raised in Glasgow so your voice brings lovely memories! Here's to getting a new crop off those new tomatoes. Thanks so much, Audrey
Hey Audrey, I had no idea you followed us… I was watching you on Tony’s live stream on Monday thinking “bloody hell what an awesome woman”….. chuffed to find you here too 😀😀😀
You don’t know where in Glasgow they were from do you? Accent the same as mine?
Hi Eli and Kate. Well I decided to grow with you and sowed some tomatoes about 8 days ago. They are just germinating. Like you said we dont get a lot of warmth here in Scotland. Hot days are quite brief! Our site is also very windy. I did laugh about the compost in the tea....yep been there many a time. My best one was last summer on a rare hot day, I left my gin and tonic on the table to go and check my plants, came back to find a bluebottle doing the backstroke in it! Ugh. The joys of gardening. Have a lovely weekend both of you and thankyou for another great vlog.
hey at least the alcohol will have killed any germs!!! 😂😂😂
Saturday I just did the Ola polka and have my other toms just begin to grow as had start them again.
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Eli and Kate, picked up lots of useful tips as usual. You guys are great!
Thanks so much! 😊 So glad the videos are being useful :D
What's your growing space? You in a city garden like us or something bigger?
Uh oh, I’m in northern California and can’t put my tomatoes out until late May-early June and I’m up-potting mine today. Last year they just weren’t far enough along by the time it got too hot so I was trying to get a head start. I may be learning a lesson this year😅. Glad to see you’re trying them outside this year! Can’t wait to watch the progress! Oh, and I love the ending reminding us to like/subscribe 🤣.
Oh I learned that lesson too…. Toooo many times I put stuff out in May and a frost killed it 😂😂😂
Heading to winter her in Australia.
Can’t wait to plant tomatoes come Spring.
Thank Eli and Kate, love your videos 💕
I still haven’t 100% got my head around the growing seasons in Oz , learning loads from you guys 😀😀😀
I gave up trying to grow tomatoes outside years ago but last year I found myself without a greenhouse or poly. So I had little choice but to try again. To my amazement they turned out fab! I'm going back to a poly this year but will be wishing you luck and following your vids closely.
Sometimes necessity just seems to be the best thing for making it all work!
Can’t wait to hear how it goes for you this year.
Beware: I grew the Little Red Riding Hood tomato last year and it grew big. My plants in pots got up to 3.5 - 4 ft tall. And branched out a lot. The ones I had in my GreenStalk tower didn't get as big. Maybe the more room they have, the more encouraged they are to grow!
Nice plants though, fairly prolific.
But my favorite dwarf is Aztek. Beautiful little plant *a true dwarf* with gorgeous golden yellow fruits.
Fab video Eli! Looking forward to watching this, I had full germination on my Scottish yellow toms today, there were 4 this morning and when i came down from my office after work all 6 had appeared!! woohoo!
Jen
Scottish yellow? Please tell?? 😀😀😀
@@eliandkate Heritage variety from the Heritage seed library. you only get a few, might have some left to send you if you dont think its too late and you have room? I dont know much about them yet though, need to do some research lol
I’m excited, I wanna know more!!!!!
Hi Eli I'm a bit of an inexperienced gardener but I'm going to try this I'm in the Outer Hebrides so it does get very windy but I've got a wall that offers some protection. I also have a small polytunnel that I got last year and grew most of my tomatoes in there. I have sasha's altai, gold nugget, sungold and latah all growing in the poly so I'll keep some of them for outside. Good luck 👍 everyone hope we get some sunshine 🌞
Oh good luck…. A wall will be brilliant, it’ll bounce heat back at them
Hi I'm a new subscriber this was such a great video I'd love to grow more plants myself so I'm looking forward to learning with you xx
Welcome to the gang Beverly
Hopefully we can inspire you to turn your garden into a little paradise
I most definitely grow along with you. I am located in the Midwest states here in America. I love to watch your videos.
Yay exciting 😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks for your great videos! I really enjoy your videos. I grow my tomatoes in big black pots cause they like the heat. Against the greenhouse they would get the additional heat that builds up in the greenhouse as well. I’m in Idaho but my daughter is a university student in Edinburgh and we’ve been there three times.
Oh now that’s interesting LeAnn… what school is she at here (or what is she studying… wonder if she’s one of my students 😂😂😂)
I have family in Boise 😂😂😂
Thank you for another fantastic video. We have just sown another batch of tomatoes. We love the cherry types, so have red, yellow and chocolate varieties this year. Best wishes for a great growing season, from Arbroath
We’re big cherry fans too… I grew the indigo blue cherries for years. My absolute favourites
Hiya, you have said in the last couple of sowing videos about tomatoes to use a propogator with ‘vents open’ to keep the warm humid atmosphere they like. I’ve always thought it was vents closed until germination where you open the vents to prevent damping off??? I’m finally trying quadgrows this year 🙌🏻
Yay for quadgrow .
Hmm vents are one of those things people will always have their own way of doing. If your propagator is in a warm spot, you’ll notice it will be all steamy and have condensation. You want the vents open to help let “some” of that out. If it’s cold, obviously close the vents. You are master of your tomatoes 😀😻😀😻
@@eliandkate I use a Geopod and it’s vents closed for me - that’s what I’ve always been told. Like you say, each to their own. Happy growing!
Ahhh is the gripped the big heated propagator like my vita pod?
You don’t quite have the same issue with the big propagators as with the smaller ones…. No idea why… maybe just the space?
I’ve just ordered some Vitapods and checked out all your videos. Many thanks
Is this you getting ready for next year Ellie?
I will sow my House tomato seeds later. They will be going against a south facing wall along with some Moskvich which I sowed a month ago and are already quite large plants (still indoors) I’m also growing 4 varieties in my greenhouse.
Oh a south facing wall will be awesome
Interesting video, thank you. I grow tomatoes outside, in pots, on my top floor balcony, every year, about 25 plants! I know far too many, but they all get used, turned into sauce and passata etc, even freeze some whole to be used in cooking. They do really well
Only too many if you don’t use them 😂😂😂
Where are you Dorothy ? I tried growing on my balcony but it didn’t get enough sun ☀️
@@eliandkate I’m in Rochester, Kent, live in a townhouse on 4 floors! No real garden, but an allotment, don’t grow tomatoes there, cos of blight etc, but 4 floors up, nothing ‘gets them! Still using passata from last summer. Only sowed my seeds this week
I use the ‘black flower buckets’ that the supermarkets use for their flowers
Oh that’s a great plan 😂😂😂
Brilliant informative video as usual Eli. I grew a yellow cherry last year outside as apparently the birds don't steal them. Got to say it was a success. They weren't a bush variety but the birds did ignor them😁.I've got a few small Tom's this year for hanging baskets etc, fingers crossed for you 👍
Now birds….. something I didn’t think of 😬😬😬
@@eliandkate I did put some netting over the red ones outside which did the trick. They were bush variety but i put them in a huge bed and as you mentioned the size pot determines the size of the plant. It was over 4 ft before I nipped the tip but it produced way longer than the same in the greenhouse!!!!
Oooh sowed my toms yesterday including House so will grow along with you please. Also did Baby Boomer, Sungold, Shimmer and Cocktail Crush in case the dreaded blight strikes again. Let’s get us some fab tomatoes this year!!🍅🍅🍅
Can’t wait to compare your house growing experience with mine
So far Baby Boomer 4/5 which surprised me as old seed 2017. House 3/5 all others 5/5
I will sow my tomatoes this weekend, but different sorts. I bought a few varieties that didn't get blight last year in Germany. Last year I lost all my tomatoes to blight.
😢😢😢😢😢
A boosh tomato are they eli? 😂 Enjoy the seeds! Fingers crossed they give you a great harvest! 🍅
Listen Leek boy, don’t even start or the Welsh jokes are coming out.
@@eliandkate leek boy 😂 I drink compost tea all the time. I've gotten used to it now 😂
😂😂😂👏👏👏👏
@@eliandkate I did put 5 seeds of each in 🤔😂
Yes same here also in my Bottle garden only tomatoes have not popped out yet
Bottle garden?
@@eliandkate Yes i planted a about 20 seeds from 15 vegetables most of them already started in bottles from last winter December in 20cm of snow except Beans Gherkins and tomatoes
By the way the forecast for Sunday here is Snow 🤣
Great video. My tomatoes are 1 inch high and living in a winter sowing milk jug.
😍 How long have you got until your weather warms up?
Very interesting i have tomato plants growing already and have potted them onxx
we do too but since these ones won't go out in the garden until June, there was no point starting them off early 😂
Sounds like the growing style of the latah would suit a hanging basket 🌏🤎💙💚🍃🌿🌱🍅🍅🍅
I did wonder about that but I’ve not seen anyone try it… they seem to be growing unpopularity though
@@eliandkate Might be an opportunity to do a compare and contrast between a pot and a hanging basket. 🤔
Well we’ll see if anyone is trying it out 😀 could be very interesting
Excellent information, just what I needed. Hoping to have a bountiful harvest this year from seed to harvest for the first time! I just need to remind myself to not over water lol
Nope… no overwatering this year! You can totally do this!
Hey Eli. Love watching your videos and your garden looks amazing. I'm growing tomatoes 🍅 plants along with you now. I live in Australia where it gets very hot all the time so we can grow tomatoes there just about all year round here. Thanks for showing au all your beautiful garden.
I always get jealous of folk in your neck of the woods then I’m reminded that all that sun and heat beings it’s own problems
Thanks for reading and reply back to my message. I forgot to write the names of the tomatoes I'm growing this year. Tomatoes names are Honey bee sweet golden and also growing Roma VF tomato. Seeds are from the Mr.fothergill's packs.
No probs Sabrina, I read every comment, and if I can, I try to reply to them all too… except the negative ninnies of course 😀😀😀
Wow that's awesome that you do that and very nice of you as well. Thanks again and can not wait to watch your next video. I get so excited when I see that you have posted a new videos.
Just editing it now…. Shhhh don’t tell anyone…. But it’s the April garden update and walk around 😀😀😀
Hi it's Carol from Oregon USA here and I was kicking myself for not sowing my tomatoes yet. I have run out of space and I can't put them out until the Mother's day holiday. Our last frost date is April 28th but we never know and it's been really really cold this year compared to the last 2 years. I still might try to sow a few and make the space.
Oh no…. Ok Carol I’ve got my fingers crossed for you 😍😍😍
This year I'm doing Suncherry Premium (which I did last year), then trying out Sungold, Cherry Falls - Which I'm going to try in a hanging basket), Current Red - Which I'm interested to see how small they are! and Big Mama! Which are supposed big be really big plum toms, great for making sauces.
Guessing you’ve already got yours sown?
@@eliandkate The Suncherry I did a couple weeks ago but all the others I only sowed yesterday 😁
I'm a beginner to growing tomatoes, and I only have a cheap small greenhouse, the types with poles and a plastic cover,it's the 3 of April just now,and I've looked up the last frost date on line and it said the 17 of April, but I've already started growing them indoors,so would it be ok to put them in my wee greenhouse during the day,and bring them back in the house at night?,any advice would be very much appreciated🙏,,I'm so glad I've found a Scottish gardening channel! This is great!👌😍👍 ❤
A lot of folk do that… it gets called the tomato hokey cokey
Basically you want it to be warm for tomatoes so above 10c minimum.
If it’s warm enough for that put them out… then bring them back in once it cools down.
It doesn’t get warm enough for me to put tomatoes out into my greenhouse until the end of April and not in the garden until end of May or beginning of June.
I’ve only just sown mine this year 😁
Do you have flowers on the tomato’s in your greenhouse already? So cool! And what are the plants to the right as you walk in the greenhouse?
Assuming you’ve not finished watching… you’ll see the flowers and tomatoes in the plants and the plants to right are the peppers, you’ll see them too 😀
#growalongwitheli
😍 indeed 😍
We get good tom crops outside, south Scotland.
Lots of folk do, all about if you can give them a nice warm sunny sheltered spot.
👍👍👍
I've sown before middle of May before and had a crop
I’ve heard folk say May used to be the standard for doing tomatoes in the UK, before greenhouses we’re so common
Hello, I am growing along. RotKappchen but the seeds haven’t arrived yet. I hope they come soon. I am growing sun gold too. First tomato growing in years. It is all very nail biting 😬
Where are you Tumblyhome?
I am in Norfolk U.K. near the north norfolk coast
Where my greenhouse is from 😂😂😂
If your toms don’t come in the next week, drop me a wee email 😀
@@eliandkate ok will do, but I have big hopes of Postie delivering the goods on Tuesday.
Iam in glasgow i sow them inside at march take them outside by june.
That would be the perfect world John, but I just don't have the space, the greenhouse is already full of huge tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and all my seedlings... but this gives us some fun things to test 😀
Iam growing ten variety of them this year hopefully we gonna bless with good weather this year.
I've still not sown my tomatoes yet either 😑 or cucumbers or Brassicas or pretty much everything 😬
Really, I caught some of your Indra pics and you looked rammed with seedlings 😬😬😬😬
@@eliandkate flower seeds lol I've only sown peas and leeks and some flowers seeds recently - done some chillies and sweet peppers but that's it really 😬 got more space this year and less organised
The toilet rolls are sweet peas - I'm growing them for my mum and her boss too
🤣🤣🤣🤣 isn’t that always the way??
Elli love your chairs where did you buy them?
It was actually Kate who bought them so I'll check in with her and get back 😀
Hi Libby, there are lots of companies who do resin/polywood adirondack chairs, we got ours from here www.tectake.co.uk/janis-garden-chair-800814 they are much easier to keep clean than the wooden ones we used to have, and they don't need painted every year, so one less job for me! K.
I have my tomatoes started but do you think I would be successful with starting aubergines now 16 April as my first seeds did not grow?? I will probably keep the gines in my conservatory. Thanks 👍
To be honest I think it depends on how long your really good hot weather lasts. Aubergines are like peppers, they like warm sunny days and their fruits take time to grow and ripen.
Have a look for the details on the variety you are growing and look for the amount of days they roughly would need as a season, that should help
Thanks for the video 👍🏻So we do not pinch out the “sucker” leaves on determinate tomato plants like we do on the indeterminate varieties?
👍🏻🇨🇦
Nope, those are the side stems that form the bush. You tend to do this on indeterminates because they are so big and well it would get unwieldy and take extra energy.
I have seen folk in warmer countries like Italy grow them with one extra stem though… guess if your weather and garden are flabby enough you could…
Friends that kill their own tomato plants and have to rely on Eli and Kate's spares!! 🙋♀️😂
😂😂😂😂 you haven’t…. I thought they were all doing great????
@@eliandkate Just the brads 😂
Ha ha ha just as well I kept you a good one
@@eliandkate You're a star! Do you want me to come get it so it's not using valuable greenhouse real estate! 😂
You are always welcome to pop round, you know that… still want the blueberry?
What size of pot do you recommend for tomatoes in a greenhouse
They are big plants so ideally as big as you can, at least 12 inches wide
I'd like to join in - I'm growing Orange Hat (cherry & bush) Tomatoes . . . May I?
😍😍😍😍 of course

had any luck growing heirloom tomatoes?
Yup I’ve grown a few varieties over the years. I think Marmande have been my absolute favourites so far.
This year will be a wider test for some heirloom and some of the newer varieties. Got Black Krim growing this year for the first time… looking forward to trying that
@@eliandkate I've planted some black Krim and some of those 'Brad's Atomic Grape' Toms. Be interesting to see how they turn out.
Oh I liked the brads atomic last year. Didn’t get any ripe ones from outdoors but those were late plants
I totally said out loud…”stop Eli you forgot to label that third row of seeds!!”
Yay!!!! I knew I could rely on you!!!
