  • It's the end of October and the weather has definitely turned cold. Winter is coming to my greenhouse so today we are going to talk about how we can help keep the soil in the greenhouse warmer so that we can still be sowing and growing seeds for our winter vegetables. We're going to be using propagators to do this, so I'll be showing you some of my favourite unheated propagators and telling you what features to look out for and I'll be showing off my new purchase, a vitopod heated propagator with grow lights.

I found your channel almost 2 years ago when I wanted to learn more about growing in a greenhouse. I immediately became intrigued and thoroughly enjoyed your personality! I now have a greenhouse of my own (named Willie Nilly for fun) and have spent the first few months getting organized and planting some microgreens, spinach and a few other plants. You also peaked my interest with the Hotbin composter, which I also indulged in earlier this summer. I used to plant a garden each year, but look forward to extending the growing season and discovering what I can grow in our cold midwest winters.
Thank you and Kate for sharing your experiences and knowlegde with integrity, compassion and humor.

Hello from Portland, Oregon! Long-time listener, first-time caller...
What I love about The Kitchen Garden channel: Everything! But specifically your laid-back conversational style combined with expert gardening tips. I'm always entertained while learning something new.
Why I put up with listening to Eli waffling if I'm not from the UK: I wouldn't call it "put up with," more like "thoroughly enjoy." And just between us and all of You Tube, if I weren't from the US, I'd want to be from the UK.
Favorite content: I love the general updates about what you're currently working on in your greenhouse and garden. It's full of timely reminders and motivation to try something new.
What I'm doing in my garden this coming year: I'll continue with lots of vegetables from seeds, started in our greenhouse and transplanted to our raised beds, but I also have big plans (hopes? dreams?) for creating an English cottage garden with lots of flowers and some edibles.
Thanks for all the great content, and may I add: fantastic tee-shirt modeling and lovely new haircut! All the best from one gardener to another.

You are educational, delightful, funny, warm and a nice way to start my mornings. I bought a greenhouse shortly after watching you insulate with bubble wrap. I am excited to use my greenhouse to extend my season this year and start early next year. Plus it looks so lovely sitting in my garden. I have tried the hoop tops on the raised beds and am trying a pallet stand for my strawberries in the spring. I get so many ideas from you. Also I would love both of your signatures on your old gardening knife! I don’t have one, but think it will inspire my family members into helping put seedlings in the garden with me - too fun tool! Vitapod giveaway. I'd use it either in my greenhouse (most probably), or indoors, depending on how cold of a winter we get. Narrowing down what I'd sow in it is impossible! Tomatoes, cucumbers, tender annuals - so many things! Love and appreciate all your content! I think I found your channel in the summer of last year. Having attempted to make a video or two myself, I know how hard it is to think and speak and do things and manage the technology all at once, and that's really not easy - and then there's the editing and uploading time, so I massively appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating useful and entertaining content, and making it available for free. I like how we are roughly doing the same things at the same time of year, like growing garlic, so just when I need tips about something, very often you magically come up with a video on that topic! But I enjoy the garden and greenhouse tours and more generally chatty videos too, as I also watch videos to relax. Thanks for doing this live video, it was fun! :D

T-SHIRT & HORI HORI Well considering I’ll be 37 tomorrow I’m definitely passed the 18 year minimum. Oh and Kate’s right by the way, you really should sign the Hori Hori, that’s a major part of its story. I started watching a few months ago(maybe more now, I can’t remember. I think it was around when you did the video on understanding fertilizers) and I got hooked and subscribed after 1 video. I just love how you guys approach things, without taking it too seriously and appreciating the good with the bad. And all with a great sense of humor! Life needs a great sense of humor! Actually, if it wasn’t for your video on how to get peppers to ripen faster I would’ve ended up with quite a few green peppers! Right after watching that I went outside and trimmed the leaves away to expose the sun and got rid of the tiny ones. My husband thought I was nuts(he’s probably not wrong, just not for the reason he thought). They started changing by the next day! You were like my pepper miracle😂. All jokes aside you guys have created an informative and entertaining channel(it’s harder to be successful at both than people realize)! I do only have one complaint though; I find myself wishing your videos were longer… you’re just too entertaining 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you!

I’m from Washington, originally from the Willamette Valley in Oregon, and where I live now (central WA; 90 miles east of Seattle) is two zones colder. We just finished putting up a Climapod greenhouse, and I was looking around for videos to help me get the most from it, and I found this one, and love it! You cover everything I need to know and very well; we also have friends who have lots of advice, but videos are the best visual for me. We haven’t heated the greenhouse; I haven’t figured out how I want to set it up yet-we put it on a wooden foundation, and are trying to figure out, stupidly after the fact, how to protect that foundation for the life of the greenhouse before I start heaping gravel and/or dirt up against it. So we have lots to do. But in the meantime, I can get our tomatoes, squashes and greens going much, much earlier with what I’ve learned so far, so thank you!! So I guess to answer your question, I’ve been subscribed for maybe a month now? Not very long, but it’s certainly helped me out! (And, being of Scottish heritage, I love all things Scottish-we’re planning a trip over the pond in a few years!)

T-shirt and hari-hari please. We have been suscribers for nearly a year. First I got my husband's old phone, and had his you tube account. Then came the time to finally upgrade my phone 📱, the internet was passing me by, in the old poor 📡 phone that we got free. So I have my very own UA-cam account, woo hoo!! My husband hears me starting your videos and asks, "is that Mrs.Doubtfire"? I smile and say yes, and we hang on your every word. We enjoy learning, and love your approach to practical gardening. As you and Kate work together for the common goal of growing your own food and have an enjoyable space to relax and spend time in, my husband and I do the same. We see our outdoor space as our rejuvenation for our soul's and our mental health. We are in Northern Michigan and our weather is very close to your weather currently. We start our plants indoors on heat mats under grow lights on a rolling rack with 6 shelves (We just graduated to this setup this year). In the past plants were started on the chest freezer, kitchen table and dryer top, in other words any water resistant flat surface. The upgrades proved to reap huge rewards as far as a large increase in garden harvests. As far as another reason why I enjoy your video's, my father's side of the family is Scottish and I have never had the chance to meet any of the family members who may still be in Scotland. I would believe that my great grandmother would have sounded like you, so I am enjoying the calming sound of your voices. Keep up the great videos, and we will continue to keep watching.

I'd be using the Vitopod for getting a head start on next years planting as a little cold here and I start about a month behind but also for some of my more fussy carnivorous plants .
I joined about five months ago when looking for ways to stop dreaded slugs munching their way through my garden and greenhouse. I hit subscribe about 5 mins into a video as I knew that this was my sort of space to hang out. My favorite content is when you show the things that haven't gone to plan. Seeing someone make mistakes and learning from them really helps. I've had garden disasters and sometimes need the reminder that we 'all' do and we learn, adjust and move forward.

    - I would use the Vitopod in the house to get tomato/pepper/chilli seedlings off to a good and early start, and possibly flowers for our hanging baskets. I do have sunny windowsills but the seedlings still stretch dreadfully so the addition of grow-lights would be amazing. The propagator being heated will allow me to start things earlier and maximise the season...

I have been watching your channel now for just over a year and subscribed instantly. I look forward to watching your new videos as they come out but I have watched older ones as well. I decided to start growing vegetables not so long ago and have been getting bits and pieces together. I am at this moment in time looking to getting my first quad grow and having a try at tomatoes and peppers. So if I was lucky to win the vita pod it would be to start my peppers/tomatoes. I would be putting them indoors as my greenhouse doesn’t have electric in it yet.
Your channel is one of my favourites along with Jessie at plot 37 and Toni at simplify gardening. Your videos really got my interest going and have helped me get my confidence up, so thank you and look forward to your next one.

    Vita pod Give Away
I have subscribed to your channel for over a year now I cant wait to a Sunday to see what you have got for us all to watch. I was lucky enough just to get a new greenhouse last year so it was a learning curve some success and some failures but you have taught me if you don't try then you don't know and wont learn. Your advice has been so vital to helping me and explained so simple and in an interesting way that makes gardening for me so enjoyable. As I have no electric in my greenhouse I would try Vita Pod in my garage with grow lights to see how it does and try and get a good start to the growing season as am in Northern Ireland and get something similar climate to what you get. Please keep up the good work and I love the updates on your growing and love the reviews you do as I never knew about a Quad grow system before but will defo know try it after seeing your results. I love the fact it is weekly with you and we you let us see how things are growing and what to do at what time of year its a great help for novice gardeners and not like other channels where they flood you with technical jarken and information that a long time gardener knows and it just confused me and nearly puts me off gardening you speak to people with respect and give us information in a fun informative way love the videos and blogs keep up the good work and thanks a million.

Still use it as a cold propagator because its really sturdy and useful for cuttings which stay moist in there. Vitopod giveaway:
I would use mine indoors as my greenhouse doesn't have electricity in it. It would be a major help in starting off peppers and tomatoes for sure in the spring time. As this year I tried to keep seedlings warm with hot water bottle which helped somewhat but it's just not the same as a vitopod.
I subscribed to your channel in the beginning of this year I believe when we were in lockdown and I spent lots of time gathering informations of how to grow certain things. Since I subscribed your channel I learnt lots of things and tricks. I really enjoy the garden tours and the product reviews such as vitopod and quadgrow. You inspired me to buy a quadgrow which I did end up buying this year to grow my tomatoes and I saw the difference and it made my life easier rather than ending up over or underwater my plants. So thank you very much for all the videos keep them rolling :)

Vitapod will be so great to help speed up things and make the germination a bit more reliable. I have been following you for a few months. I live in South Wales. I finally got an allotment plot a couple of months ago. The videos I most enjoyed were the ones where you showed how you use your greenhouse trying to get as much as you can out of it. Early next year I’ll be starting off my chilli peppers. As usual, I have more seeds than I really need so I’ll be taking over the utility room as a propagation space. This year I started late and my seeds germinated way too late. I had to resort to getting some small plants and grow them on instead. I vowed that next year I will be prepared.
I’ve learnt so much from this channel, I only subscribed during 2021 but I’ve watched nearly every video. I have plans to organise my greenhouse better and make it work for me over the next year. I grew a mountain of basil for home made pesto which has been fabulous. I have garlic in the ground, turnips for Christmas and a real plan to make my own hot sauces and spicy ketchups. Without the channel, I’m pretty certain I’d be bumbling around as before with stunted or leggy plants and feeling quite disappointed with my growing season. Far from that this year as I got a better grasp of the nutrient needs of my plants and watering routines. My peppers survived the scorching temperatures with some ad-libbed shading and I’ve made some pretty fabulous pizza sauces.
One thing’s for sure, I can’t wait until those first seeds go in the soil next year. I can already feel that it’s going to be a good one because I have a plan - something I’ve never really got to grips with before. Thanks Eli and Kate, you’ve been proper inspirations.

I have been watching a lot mint gardening videos for years and when I discovered you in your garden I absolutely fell in love when it comes to my favorite part of your channel I am not 100% sure because I love all of it especially the greenhouse and the conversation I also enjoy the raised garden beds and the way you guys built them. I would likely have it on my windowsill, although I could potentially have it in our small hand-built greenhouse, but I love being able to keep an eye on them easily when they are inside and watch things growing day by day :D
I'm very new to gardening and growing, only getting into it since lockdown last year and I've definitely caught the gardening bug! At the time, my mum and I were looking to buy a greenhouse, so the first video I watched (and when i also subscribed) was your "Which is better polycarbonate or glass greenhouse?" video. In the end we managed to get my step-dad to actually build us a little lean-to style one, half wood and the top half from polycarbonate sheets. Reminds me.. I still need to give it another couple coats of paint haha.
I have been finding trying to start plants from seed to be the most fun, challenging and exciting thing and I keep wanting to see what things I can grow from seeds I've taken from fruits and plants, as well as tricky things for a bit of a challenge. I seem to have a thing for fuchsias, and I have managed to get a cutting of one of my favourites growing on my windowsill, which I'm going to attempt to try and make into a 'standard', but what I really want to try is to see if I can cross pollinate some and try to grow the mixes from the seeds! I think the propagator would be brilliant to try that out!
This past year I've just been using some seed trays with clingfilm over them, and the top half of plastic bottles as make-shift propagators, so having a proper bit of quality kit would be just fantastic :D Fingers crossed!

I subscribed to your channel earlier this year and just love watching your videos and what you do in the garden, you always seem to drop so many nuggets of information into each one. I particularly like how you help with those sort of problems and points in a gardener’s life when we think oh no what have I done wrong, or why me! You calmly explain and I think phew, it’s not just me and this is what I can do. Love the humour too, (outtakes on insta are great). I don’t have a greenhouse, although I take in what you tell us just in case, one day🤔, but did managed to grow peppers properly a a couple of years ago in bit of a heatwave and attempts to start indoors this year rather than the chilly shed failed dismally! Teeshirt and Hori Hori Give Away please. I have been a subscriber for a year now. I found your channel when I was looking for greenhouse info. I live outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the US. I loved learning about your new greenhouse and your interior use. Some day I hope to build my DIY-vintage window greenhouse. It will include your folding staging(brilliant!) and angled brace shelving that has the board to turn the triangle into a storage area. Many US you-tube channels I watch are from the south or West coast high dessert. You teach me about compact gardening in a climate colder than mine. It helps me learn to successfully grow for my climate. I have 4 raised beds and 1 in-the-ground bed. This summer was my second growing season. I grow lots of veg (tomatoes, beans, peas, peppers, greens, etc) and flowers for the pollinators.Your accents and dry humor keep me coming back. I could just listen to you speak - the garden info is a bonus. I would be honored to win a tee and your old personalized knife.

T-shirt and hori hori: I subscribed sometime during the pandemic. I used to live in several acres, which required trees and bushes to even approach a dent in the landscape that approached a garden. After moving to town, I embraced perennials with a passion, day lilies, bearded iris, bulbs, etc. Now I am in my fifties, and I am starting to grow a few more “useful” plants which include vegetables and perennial food crops (apples, peaches, pears, raspberries, rhubarb, asparagus, walking onions, etc.) I love to watch your channel for two reasons. 1) My eldest daughter works at a “big cat” sanctuary. When the animals are happy, they chuff at her. I love to listen to your enthusiasm when you also are “chuffed” about something. 2) I have greenhouse envy. I have long term plans to build a greenhouse that incorporates a couple of my mother’s stained glass window creations. These are two renderings of my children…priceless! For now, I start seedlings in my basement with grow lights. Anyway, love your content! Best!

T-shirt and Hori Hori: I am currently building my first greenhouse using reclaimed windows. I found you yesterday by luck when doing a UA-cam search looking for greenhouse tips. I've only seen a couple episodes, but it's cold and rainy today so needless to say I'll have a lot more viewed today, unless my boss is reading this then I'll be cold and wet from working really hard today. I've been growing a few tomatoes, squash, and peppers for a few years. I have a two year old granddaughter that loves hanging out with her Papa in the garden. I have to keep an eye on her because she'll pick everything and eat it right there. Unfortunately I had to have several large trees removed due to them dieing, but that gave me more sun so now I can grow more stuff. We are so excited about our new growing opportunity and my one year old granddaughter that will be able to join us in the garden next summer. Love the videos.

Eli and Kate. I would love to be the winner of your signed (by Kate and Eli) hori-hori, and another shirt (I have a short-sleeve Kate and Eli Kitchen Garden shirt, but I could use a long-sleeve one for winter).
    But why pick me?
Actually, I have no special reason to be chosen (or to win) over any others who love your channel. We all appreciate the time and effort, both you (and Kate) put into your productions.
For my part, Sunday’s are special to me, and your videos are something I look forward to every week. Watching and listening to your videos during Covid, I have gotten to sort of spend some good times (however vicariously) with like-minded folks, without having to worry about getting so much as a sniffle. And I appreciate the fact that for non-Scottish listeners, like me, you slow down a “wee” bit and soften your Glaswegian accent for us.
Your videos are easy-listening and absorbing for more reasons than that, of course. They’re very professional, well-edited, and get to the point of what you’re trying to impart. And you make the listener feel comfortable. Unlike so many know-it-all UA-cam videos that I’ve seen, your down-to-earth, and sometimes humorous, manner of presenting your message and experience is very refreshing.
And to be honest, I’m rather picky when it comes to judging people. Politics here in the U.S. has made me so, I suppose. But you and Kate come across as just normal, down-to-earth folks, and it’s just so nice to see “normal” human beings when I turn on my iPad.
I’m sure you guys have your faults, and you’re on your best behavior while filming, but over the years, I’ve developed a sense for figuring out who is being disingenuous and who is not. And you guys have easily won my confidence.
(So do I sound like Mr. Rogers? You’ll have to Google him and find out, haha.)
Anyway, if I don’t win the brass ring, you can always mail me a postcard from Scotland, and I’ll be perfectly stoked (that’s Californian for “well chuffed”).
    Stay safe, and thanks again.

    1. Will be used to start my peppers also, started them indoors this year but they were a bit leggy due to lack of light. Still I did end up with a fair crop. I would use this in my greenhouse instead now.
    2. Subsrcibed in Feb 2020 when I moved house and had space for a greenhouse. Found your video on buying a greenhouse very useful. I love the grow along parts that give me things to focus on, like over wintering pepper plamts which I am also trying this year.

I use heat mats in my house. I put a piece of corrugated cardboard between pad and plant tray to keep from overheating tray.

Vitapod Giveaway - Also your giveaway too. I subscribed to you a few months ago. We only started gardening this year, when we moved into our bungalow in Prestatyn, we never had a garden before then. So it our first garden. Believe it or not we managed to grow cucumbers, courgettes, peppers and tomatoes this year from plug plants successfully, both inside the greenhouse and outside right up to beginning of November. We also grew strawberries from plug plants as well. It’s been so great that I would like to start growing from seed in the next year. Due to your recommendation and through watching your video I have bought the quadgrow and the veggie podgrow too from Greenhouse. I found that I absolutely love gardening and watching the plants grow. My husband does the heavy lifting as I can’t due to Osteoarthritis everywhere in my body, but I can do a lot sitting down. I love your videos as you make it seem that anyone with the will to grow veg can do it.

Hey Wendy, thanks for dropping by, your plans sound great and wow you’ve had a fantastic year of growing. I’m well impressed. Unfortunately this video is a few months old now so I’m afraid you’ve missed the competition, sorry 😢

    Vitopod give away.
I would use the vitopod in my greenhouse, I would use it to germinate my chilli pepper crosses that I made this season. I’ve been watching your channel since early lockdown in Covid 2020 , your quad grow inspired me to buy and they have been amazing this season with a bumper harvest that all goes into my Dorset devil chilli powder that I make and share with family and friends- roll on next season 👌👍chilli rules 🌶

😂 Yeah I always found it that the chillies did way better in a quadgrow than in an actual chilli grow
      Go figure

I would love to use it in my greenhouse. I could get lots of veg and flowers started off in this. Looks amazing 😁
I have been watching for a few months now, but only subscribed today. I love how simple and fun you make everything. I only have have a greenhouse and a few beds for planting too. You have shown me that I can still grow so many things with the space I have. Thank you x

it's surprising what you can do with a little bit of space... granted I'd love a bigger, sunnier garden but it's still really exciting... Just about to sow onions for the first time :D

Hi Eli and Kate. Came across your site just coming up for a year now before my first ever greenhouse was delivered in January 2020. Binged watched all your ptevious videos. Hubby thought I had left him as he never saw me for weeks sitting in another room watching You Tube 😂 Would use the Vitapod indoors as unfortunately I didn't put power in my greenhouse, something I now regret. 😔

To be honest, sometimes power in the greenhouse is overrated D: I use it more for the radio than anything else :D

If I were to win this amazing giveaway I would set up a solar panel at my allotment and use it in the polytunnel.
