    the person who chucked this is probably the typical modern day person walking around complaining about being " Broke", complaining about the economy...and not even SEEING the money right in his hands. Sad generation we have today. That is why your videos always make me smile. Glad there are still smart people like you out there. Merry Christmas! :)

      jklfds85 , can’t blame people today, cause we live in a consumer society. There’s a new shiny thing just around the corner. But with age we can see the value in an older life that has been shined and buffed up.

      Condition is everything, getting $700 for the whole group is what I'm guessing. The Flying Yankee streamliner might be around $200, the Virginian Caboose about $300, the rest of the cars and transformers another $200. The rusted track and switches are worthless.

    Thank you for rescuing those treasures from the dumpster. Someone lovingly accumulated all those pieces & sadly they were dumped by possibly an heir. I also was into N & HO gauge trains as a kid (okay, as an adult too). Never liked Lionel that much because the scale was all over the place. I now see the beauty in their construction & durability. Not much plastic there. Good find, Deek!

    That is so cool! Some one probably saw the box of trains and wanted to clean house. So they chunked the trains and did not even look at the trains inside them. That is a very REMARKABLE find!!!!

    What a FANTASTIC find! I find the coolest things, sometimes, dumpster diving. Sad the things people throw away because they are too lazy to find someone that wants it and they just dump it in a landfill. Great for the people that find it and save it! Loved this video!

    I'm jealous of your score there.
    That bridge is the same as one missing from my Pop's train set I inherited. My sister had asked me if all the set was there and I had to reply the bridge was not. We got the set working and ran it under the Christmas tree this year, first time it had been run in over forty years.

    Wow! What a fun find! I kept exclaiming every time you showed a new piece. They're so beautiful. I especially loved the bridge and building; I'd display them as art. The passenger car! Wow! Thanks for saving and sharing. I haven't dumpster-dived in a long time so it was a vicarious thrill to see this!

    The silver streamlined train is the Flying Yankee which is a prewar model and could be worth a couple of bucks. But honestly despite many of the comments condition is everything and these are in pretty poor condition overall not worth that much. But still a great find. Thanks for sharing.

    I had that exact locomotive, several of the cars, bridge and trestles; received for Christmas around 1965. The freight cars and loco are actually in good shape, but you have your work cut out for you with the passenger set. The track, transformer and switches you probably want to discard, easily replaced with new stuff. That terminal is definitely worth restoring, as is the signals and other rare items. "O" gauge is a good way to go.

    I have that auto hauler in my collection. It's supposed to come with 4 cars, but when I bought it 2nd-hand from an antique shop, it only had 2. Otherwise, it was in good condition and a great find! Still, I can't believe somebody would actually junk a set of vintage Lionel trains. That's an awesome piece of Americana you've got there! Like they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure!

  • @UA-51
    @UA-51 6 років тому +3

    Y'know, Richard Kughn (former president of Lionel) found his first train set in a trash can. And that set him up for building more layouts, collecting trains, and eventually saving Lionel from bankruptcy. Even had a place for his entire company called Carail.

  • @BulldogsFL
    @BulldogsFL 7 років тому +5

    Good score. The Prewar 115 station and Flying Yankee streamliner, along with the Postwar Virginian N5C caboose, are probably the most interesting items. The 275W ZW might be worth a few bucks too if it's workable.
    "Back in the day" it was common to see stuff like this on the curb all the time...simply old toys then, not collectors items.

    It's definitely already been said, but the Flying Yankee (silver passenger train) is quite the find indeed!! Some day I wouldn't mind finding one of those myself, but my favorites don't come my way as often as if like, but hey, I just have to keep looking. I'm always on a tight-ish budget, so I've learned how to fix stuff myself, and now I'd never have it any other way, with al, the joy it brings me.

    Clean them up and get them to a train show...there are some nice pieces there and no matter what you are
    told, some one is ALWAYS in the market for these vintage Lionel trains...face it they just don't make them
    anymore and that increases their value...GOOD LUCK! Get this book..."Beginning Guide to Toy Train Collecting and Operating"...it will tell you EVERYTHING you need about cleaning and possibly selling what you found. Author is
    John Grams!!

    Great score! My Dad got a Lionel Santa Fe diesel freight set with all the tracks, the truss bridge, switches, and bubbling water tower for Christmas in around 1950. It was kept at my Grandmother's house and my brother and I played with it when we were kids. We got our own set with an orange DT&I switcher and a red, white and blue mail car similar to the one you have.
    The tracks and bridge can be cleaned by soaking them in Evapo-Rust, and it won't hurt the paint. Actually, leave the bridges rusty, real railroad bridges always are. I wouldn't try repainting any of those; patina is good but definitely clean them carefully!
    I envy you.

    I collect vintage ho trains. I came across a box like this with old Hornby trains beyond salvage of repair.
    I went to my local art store and bought a canvas frame. Then I set out an interesting loop using some old flex track that I glued to the canvas.
    Next I glued the engine and a nice line of rolling stock behind it to the track.
    Stuck it up on my wall near my main working layout as 3D art. It looks pretty cool and it gets positive comments from friends.
    The background on the canvas is painted sky blue so the train looks like it's hanging out in the sky.
    Terrific dumpster find 👍

  • @13thBear
    @13thBear 7 років тому +1

    That is one lucky find, my friend! Lots of cool trains. I would advise you, if you are selling it, to do no more that clean off the obvious dirt and "skunge" and let the buyer fine-tune the pieces after they take possession. If you're going to keep it for the great fun you'll have, clean it up to your satisfaction, repair what you can repair, have an expert repair what you can't, and build yourself a neat train layout, either as a permanent layout in your basement or spare room, or as a temporary set to run under the Christmas tree. If you have the room, a more permanent layout can be a challenging hobby and only get more fascinating with the passage of time as you learn more and do more with your trains. Have fun no matter what you decide!

    They say don't fix antiques because most are worth more money when not fixed, but I can't argue about trying to fix it up. I have picked up numerous amounts of old Lionel and marks trains from the 50's, 60's and 90's. I got an old marks engine to run, I bought a 1990's Lionel Santa Fe steam freight for 30 dollars at a flea market in perfect condition with the original box I put it on the track and it ran perfectly

    Nice find, even though the condition of some is poor, toss nothing. The Yankee was one of the first departures from extremely toyish trains, and more realism. That and the ZW transformer are worth your time and effort. There is a lot of fun there. To help you out in depth for repair to parts ID, try O gauge Railroad Forum, or Model Train Forum, they are likely the two largest, freindliest, and most knowledgeable (and free! (Very Important)).
    The best thing you can do is have some fun with them, that's priceless.
    Avoid solvents, alcohol, and cleaners till you research each. Oil (automotive!) them before you play. Lots of videos on that here. Diluted Dawn, fast drying and fresh oil. (still be careful, Dawn can mess up lettering paints & ink too)
    Building a micro house with an RR theme would be cool. Re-bending some track into a micro layout, fitting. That Scout could handle 17-19” diameter curves, nearly half of the dia. of the stock track. A bender can be made from wood, L brackets & washers. Despite being bigger, by not focusing on being to scale, O gauge can often fit in a smaller area than most N or HO, and with huge wheel flanges, won't derail if you sneeze. (There are scale O offerings too)
    Thanks for sharing D, I'm jealous.

    I have a bunch of American Flyer and Lionel trains in my mother’s basement. My grandpa was quite the collector. What I have is the leftovers from what he didn’t sell. He called my mom one day and told her that he had sold them. My mom was pissed. She knew I loved them. He had a train board that hung from the ceiling in the basement and a massive shelf that held engines and cars. When we went to visit, that was the first thing I would go to. Good times......

The silver tin streamliner and 2 cars are known as The Flying Yankee and was made in the late 30's..there should be 2 smaller things with 4 wheel that go between the cars called vestibules. The big transformer is a ZW and is worth from 75 and up depending on condition. The bridges are 10 dollars each, the station is a good one but needs to be restored - you might get 50 bucks for it. Holy crap, what IDIOT threw them out? Great job saving them! I have several of those pieces and with a little cleaning they will all have at least some collector value. Rusty track has virtually no value, but all the rolling stock, transformers and accessories have value. Clean the plastic parts with mild dish detergent and water, but keep it off any rusted metal. Use a cloth and for the stubborn dirt a worn out toothbrush. Be careful around any decals or stickers like on the ALCOA hopper. WD-40 is good to remove light rust from the metal parts. Good luck and find them a good home.

    Hello Derek,
    A nice find with the larger boxcars the articulated passenger cars, the typical roof corner-broken SP cabooses, and marker-broken 23x scout loco. Its odd to see a high-end transformer with a low-end loco. The Virginian caboose caught my eye, and I'm presently seeking about 7 girder bridges for my layout. The big ZW transformer. It might be repairable, but you can by a new one with much more reliable electronics and a built-in on/off switch. The station looks like a repaint resto project so it will never be priced like a original unit. The O gauge track is unsalvageable (been there, done that) as that center rail will be full of shorting issues. The trestle bridge is another resto project
    All that mouse urine? Bad corrosion and mask up to prevent Haunta Diease, a very bad respiratory infection, ask a Korean War vet!
    I wonder where the original loco went? A 671? 2046? Maybe a 746 was the original steam?
    Keep your eagle-eyes open! Going into the basement and run my 2046 and pull a string of 20 boxcars!

    Did you ever clean this stuff up? It'd be really neat to see this as a little mini project on your channel, maybe even fix it up to running condition and find a way to incorporate a loop of track in a tiny house... It'd certainly be decor with character and a story

    I have a very similar train set in great condition with all working parts and original box.....years ago Contacted a hobby store and they were only going to give $50.00. I declined and just run it under my Christmas tree every year..

      Worth far more than $50- hobby shop was banking on you just wanting to get rid of them so they could flip them for a profit....

    Glancing through what you have I will say that with some cleanup you do have some decent pieces in there. I'm with two model railroad clubs in the area I live in and we have been donated items that look similar in terms of dirt and conditions. Careful cleaning with some gentle dish soap and warm water and they were in beautiful shape. Great job on finding the Flying Yankee model. Also looking at your find, that solid blue Virginian caboose seems to be a scarce find that would be worth giving a little extra attention to. If you ask around some of the hobby shops around your area you could probably find someone that can rebuild that ZW transformer. Again what you found is something that I go nuts over, the diamonds in the rough that just need a little TLC.

    You could contact Bob Bomboy in Danville PA - he heads the Saturday Trains program & has a video on UA-cam - to see if he would like you to donate to him the stuff that nobody else is interested in.

    OH WOW!!!! What a GREAT find!! You are SO lucky!! And the person who threw these marvelous trains out was a fool! Sometimes a stupid heir to a home will just "dump out" the contents. It's so sad. :-( I've found many things in dumpsters, etc. We're certainly a wasteful society. :-( I have a lot of trains now, but would have given my eyeteeth for just ONE small set of trains as a 50's poor kid!

    A Lionel train set! I don't know what it is worth but if you have the patience to clean it and rewire the electric pieces, it might be worth something. I would probably place the set in the late 1940s or early 50s. I got a set on my first Christmas in 1948 and the engine is very similar to the one you have. I still have all of the rolling stock and the track. This is worth a little of "mad" money or the beginning of a new hobby.
