I don't know why, but the SVD just looks so elegant. It's one of those aesthetic guns that you can't point out what detail makes it look good, it just does.
I think that it's the combination of many details that makes the SVD so aesthetically pleasing, but it's mostly due to: it's a long but slender gun, the thumbhole stock with cheekrest, the long birdcage flash hider, the PSO-1 scope and its very original reticle design,
@@Xerxes1688 Personally I love the look of it with irons. Don't get me wrong, the PSO-1 looks great, but I agree the slender profile of it gives it a nice appearance. Also, the geometry of the dust cover and receiver is just beautiful.
Yeah Dragunov kinda spoke about this rifle once, saying that he would've made it muchmore accurate but the leadership gave him some prettystrict limitations on weight, while the accuracy as it was perfectly satisfied the intended role. Great video.
I have 7 Marksman badges, 4 sharpshooter badges and an expert badge in the U.S Army and I still watch your videos to learn more about stuff! I love your channel dude! Keep it up.
Having shot one of these recently I can say it’s got the most savage recoil I have ever experienced from a gun. The wooden stock has no padding at all, and the first shot could have broken my clavicle if it had been a touch higher. I tucked it lower into my pectoral and still did not enjoy the experience in the slightest. For a semi auto the grouping was pretty poor, around 4 inches at 100 yards, some of that was down to me I guess, I felt like I had too much tension in anticipation of the stupidly harsh recoil. Compare to the M40 I shot after which with no gas system and a larger cartridge was much less vicious in terms of recoil and printed cloverleaf groups at 100 yards.
SVD, without hesitation. We were issued M14s bedded into McMillans as DMRs, but they ended up spending more time bouncing around in the back of Humvees with cases of bottled water and rolls of Cope Long Cut because we couldn't keep them running. Based on my experience, I'd take any rifle over an M14.
A few genuine Russian SVD's were available from a Montreal gun store in 1988, Checkmate Sports rings a bell but I am not 100% on that. Came in a velvet lined wood box with 4 mags, bayo, mag pouch, cleaning kit, PSO scope, the full deal. Price was $2000.00. Very expensive rifle in 1988 but also quite rare. In around 1995 they were prohibited with all AK variants. Very surprised you are able to own and shoot one since they have been prohibited in Canada for close to 30 years.
Speaking from Italy here, yes you can buy Zastava here but is also very easy to get a TIGR (civilian version of the SVD) in both calibers 7.62x54R and .308 WIN. A Russian TIGR goes from 1600€ (bare minimum box + rifle + 1 mag) to around 2600€ (wooden box + rifle in SVDS configuration + NPZ 3-9x scope with matched serial number).
I suggest cursed episodes. Take a gun and put on the worst attachments to try making something horrible but still functional. I wonder if there are any drum mags that are compatible with the SVD
For decades everyone wanted this, but since then there have been some really kick ass Sniper rifles made But it still is nice,,for instance the 338 Lapua firing Sniper Rifles the Army has
I agree with all the cons... But am sad you didn't mention removing the cheek pad to shoot the iron sights. Or even the polymer furniture. Love my Drag/NDM-86 (.308)
For me, on the Dragunov family of DMRs, you can beat the OG SVD (also the Norinco NDM-86 or Type 79) with wooden furniture and receicer lightning cuts in terms of aesthetics, but for practical use, I would rather go for an SVDS, with folding stock, separate pistol grip, stronger receiver, polymer forearm from factory, shorter but thicker barrel (this translastes in less barrel flex), for practical use.
You should collect a Tula civilian VSS for your reference collection! My understanding is they should even be legal for the average gun own (RPAL) As the suppressor is not activated on them and barrel length is full size. I am scared to go through importation process as I'm sure somehow RCMP will deem it an AK variant even though they share 0 parts in common and have completely different actions. These rifles are already avalible for civilian market in many parts of Western EU countries.
I love the SVD and the EBR. Both are just dam sexy. If the EBR was half the weight difference, it would be my definite choice, but for now I just can't choose.
I have no personal experience with an SVD, but from my understanding, the PSO-1 scope on the SVD is also a big limitation for the rifle system as a whole, 1) its only a 4x scope, 2) the range / ballistics drop markers in the scope can be extremely vague and confusing to use, especially if a target is between two of the range markers and most often even the range markers are not always very accurate either. Another thing with the SVD is that their accuracy is very dependent on the type of ammo used too, this however is not unique to the SVD.
I think the 4x magnification is fine, since the svd is not supposed to be an extreme long range precision rifle. It was designed to extend an infantry squad's range, and provide constant, more accurate fire in the middle of a battlefield. Unlike sniper rifles, which are designed to fire one, maybe a few shots at important targets far away. The SVD is more of a battlefield weapon, less of a sniper, even though the russians use them in such roles as well. Which is also why these rifles are so light compared to sniper rifles, the user has to keep up with the infantry. The drop markers are fairly consistent imo, at least when using the intended ammunition, like 7N1. Most feed their SVD's mass produced regular ball more fit for a machine gun, and then wonder why the markers are off and accuracy is rather poor.
I had a Romain psl, it's the same rifle isn't it? I mean same rnd, looks exactly the same. Got it for 600 bucks sold it for 1200. Wish I still had it. 125yrds I could shoot a lock out of a file cabinet.
Yes it perfectly doesn’t make sense. Trudeau is a capitalist and an anti-communist. Why do conservatives find it so hard to meme? You people hate communists but love our guns. Says don’t go full commie, flashes a picture of an anti-communist. You don’t even have to open a book anymore. it’s 2023 you can just look stuff up and get educated. It’s not hard to know what you’re talking about.
Different platform that was developed for different use/role. The M1D and SVT40 also predated these guns by a long ways in terms of scoped semi auto rifles, but they were developed for the role of sniper, not as a DMR / an additional force multiplier to be used within the squad itself.
In the case this law goes into place and is strictly enforced, have you considered moving your guns to another country? Or would that be like unfeasible? Of course only for the guns this ban would apply to
I would have to move somewhere like Switzerland or Czechia if I wanted an overall improvement. Moving stateside would require setting up a FTZ in order to import all of these guns, and even then I'm not sure it would work. That said, the ones affected that I hold personally can all be transferred to the same licensed business that holds all these other firearms that have since been banned here (SVT in this video has been banned since 1995). I can still access them for content the same as before.
The channel won’t change with any new gun bans as it exists outside of the civilian system. The problem with moving stateside is I wouldn’t be able to bring much of this with me. I’d have to start fresh and most of this stuff is way pricier stateside.
