I am such an animal lover I really wish Casper could feel love for you. Love your video's. Spent 25 years in South Florida as a Police Officer and had a few encounters with alligators and would break my heart when 99% of the time a "Wildlife" person would be called out as I worked midnight shift and invariably the guy would just kill the gator. Would burn me up because I think a lot of it is habitat encroachment and like you said "fed gator is a dead gator." Just would be upset that there was no place like where you are in /homestead I think, a place for a nuisance gator. The dept. I worked for always called out someone that would just kill them. Thank you so much for what you do and congrats to your new place you are doing around Ocala I think !! Maybe I can talk my husband to coming to your new place when it is up and running. @@GatorChris_
Great explanation. Bonding with something and having love for something are to entirely different things. This is where a lot of people get your relationship with Casper confused. Casper, doesn't know what love is, but he knows you because of the years of work that you put in him and thus it created a type of bond and mutual understanding of boundaries as a result. But like you said as soon as something happens to you and you aren't you anymore, his feeding instincts kick in, because he sees you as an easy meal. Gators are equal opportunist, their drive towards eating far outweighs anything else. This is what they are, they are eating machines. you can't change 100 million years of instinct, with 15 years of working with a gator.
Good way to put it. You reminded me I've seen someone say they don't love, but you do form a trust bond with animals. If you put in the time and energy.

Personally I think for the most part people try to equate what they are familiar with - in this case mammals which can (and do) bond with their people to a point. Reptile behaviour is foreign to a high percentage of people.. I get asked if my snake loves me.. nope... he knows me, trusts me and I am the safe warm tree that hands off his dinner- would he miss me if I were gone - nope he would just adjust to the next safe warm tree... I do love him to bits and I'm happy to be his safe warm tree :-)
Exactly, reptiles don't have the same brain structure as mammals. Their brain structure is simplistic compared to mammals. The parts of the brain in mammals where compassion lies are non existent in reptiles. This is why when I see reptile owners say that their reptiles love them like they are dogs I chuckle. No, they just associate you with food and aren't threatened by you which is why they aren't defensive towards you, because you pose no threat to them.
So interesting, really enjoy hearing you talk about what you understand about their behaviour. Did the female who had a seizure, die from the seizure or from the male attacking her? Quite sad. Aries and Miss Toothie is another example of a crocodilian bond. So interesting.
Chris, you are a gifted and remarkable trainer; of that there is no question. I'm also certain that alligators have their own individual personalities, but unpredictability would always be my concern with such a creature in close proximity to me.
That seizure and the eating story is very interesting (but very sad ofc) It makes me wonder is any factor was at play for instance like if the male alligator was eating the female with the seizure so that her corpse isn't eaten by anyone else or so. I'm not an alligator expert by any means but it just makes me wonder

When I first started I didn’t know anything and figured what everyone told me about how they’re “so aggressive and will chase you” had to have some merit, but over time I’ve realized they were wrong 😂

Hey Chris, have you thought about giving the Alligators an AAC device to get them to talk? They are already doing that with dogs to get them to talk with their owners. Basically what it is is a board with a variety of buttons that help the animal articulate itself. I dont necessarily know how the training is done but theres this one dog named Bunny that has many videos of her using her board to communicate.

I think based on what you said, their predatory instinct is much stronger than their bonding ability. They may recognize you but they do because of food, they learned to exist along with you in presence because they can get food as reward. I think that’s how they are based on how you explained.
I guess animals are a bit like people. There are some people I don’t like. Can’t really say why, but there’s just something about them that makes me not want to be around them. Advice for kayakers please….. alligators scare me, especially after my friend was attacked in her kayak 2 years ago. It was a very weird circumstance that wildlife officers had no explanation for. She didn’t see the gator. It was on the bottom and it sprang up and tried to grab her arm. Very traumatic for me as well.

Man these creatures sure are interesting. It takes a lot of balls to step into the water with a beast like this while totally understanding the nature of their instinct. You walk a fine line but what's even more impressive is the trust that can be gained from something basically built to be the ultimate killing machine. That's as good as a dinner bell for an opportunistic hunter that likes meat and isn't fussy about what kind!". Easy food that isn't energetically costly is a big win, even for us. Most of us don't scratch cook ourselves nutritionally balanced, gourmet meals 3x a day. It's just too much work for not enough benefit. And even if we do love cooking, sometimes we just order pizza because it's easier. Other animals are the same way too. But they don't order pizza. I hope...
Yes, they can live in rivers, lakes. Pawns creeks if there's water, they can be found there while they may not be in every body of water. You might as well treat everybody of water as though they have them because you never know.
Yes Chris has said that every body of water even a puddle can have a gator on it, if even just for a temporary time like in the case of puddles. They’ll use small bodies of water as a resting place when searching for a new habitat. Where I’m from in Africa, it’s the same case with crocodiles, every body of water potentially has a croc in it.

I am really interested in the variations of personalities each Gator has, as well as intelligence. Mood swings, and even some of the stuff you brought up in this video about them liking or disliking other Gators. In another video you once did you mentioned how they react to people they don’t recognize differently than they do to you. Do they respond to different people they do know differently. Like, that Gator may know Bob but they don’t like Bob. He likes Chris but hates Bob, even though no other Gator has a problem with Bob. I think they are far more intelligent than most people realize/give them credit for being. And even if its different; they obviously have some kind of social structure.
I'm inclined to believe you as you're the expert, but something else is at play with that Wally the emotional support gator. He's roaming around while is owner sleeps and while sleeping his owner is "not himself", must appear dead-like to the gator. Wally won't bite. Doesn't seem to matter what the kids do in the pool (flip him over, slap at him, etc.) he will not bite. Wally seems constitutionally incapable of acting like a gator and ever being aggressive. It's a mystery.

As I get older, I will probably slow down more and not do things that are as dangerous, but I have no plans of ever retiring from working with animals

Like, that Gator may know Bob but they don’t like Bob. He likes Chris but hates Bob, even though no other Gator has a problem with Bob. I think they are far more intelligent than most people realize/give them credit for being. And even if its different; they obviously have some kind of social structure.
I have seen them not like someone who is rough with them, so even when they know people they’ll vary their behavior based on how they’ve been treated

I'm inclined to believe you as you're the expert, but something else is at play with that Wally the emotional support gator. He's roaming around while is owner sleeps and while sleeping his owner is "not himself", must appear dead-like to the gator. Wally won't bite. Doesn't seem to matter what the kids do in the pool (flip him over, slap at him, etc.) he will not bite. Wally seems constitutionally incapable of acting like a gator and ever being aggressive. It's a mystery.
