- What do you do if you get bit by an alligator??? Well, it’s a lot more complicated than people think and it totally depends on why the gator is biting you!! I run through some of the possibilities here, but the best plan is to avoid the situation in the first place!! Never feed a wild gator, never have kids or pets near the water’s edge, never swim in gator habitat and always keep a safe distance!

Yep, plenty of gators in SC lowcountry too. I go to nearby parks and lakes to see them. Nice weather in Winter, just a bit of chill some days.
@auntdiane1578 oh ya I'm in Charleston and we have our resident six footer than hangs in the retention pond at work, unfortunately someone got snatched with their dog on Hilton head recently. They probably just stumbled into the wrong place at the wrong time unfortunately

@@stpworld saw a video of a similar idiot a few years ago. May have been the same one. It was a man with two elderly English ladies on his boat, showing his "mastery" over a huge alligator, habd feeding it chicken. I commented that he was basicly signing the gator's death warrant, and he called me Karen.

Hi chris, have been watching for a while and i appreciate the constant repetition that you use in your vids, even if they seem ramble-y to you, it just drives the point home that these giant tanks are dangerous, but not mindless killers like the rest of the world romanticizes them to be. Reptiles, amphibians and crocodilians are probably my favourite type of creature just because of how alien their minds are to us humans, thank you for your educational videos, on here and on the floridas wildest channel, best of luck on the alligator conservation and I hope you enjoy your weekend and your 4th of july :D
I love gators. One was found last yr behind my home in the river here in lower alabama. He was 12'. Unfortunately it didn't end well for him. That makes me so sad. He lived a long time and didn't harm anyone. I wish the first response of humans wasn't to kill.

Great video! I grew up in Clearwater in the early 70s and my friends and I swam in all the ponds and lakes and of course there were gators and you explained why we were not eaten. Incidentally, also ran around all summer with out a drop of sun screen!
Swimming in any water etc with alligators is so risky, so lucky nothing happened.

Great video, Chris! It was very informative. Interested to learn more about how you go about “flooding”an alligator. Chances are you wouldn’t have access to a garden hose. Always very interesting (to me) but when I then tell my partner about what I’ve learnt he reminds me that we’re never going near alligators so it’s useless information 😂. We don’t have many in the UK. I’m amazed that an alligator (Casper) is so gentle with you. It’s really lovely to watch him swimming around you

Chris, this was a fantastic video. I learn so much from you and could listen to you for hours. Question, I’ve seen videos of crocodiles grab prey, lift their head up out of the water, then slam the prey item on top of the water. Do alligators do that?
Also, I guess you’ve heard about the 13 year old teen that was bitten by an alligator. He’s fine but now they’ve set traps to catch the alligator to kill or remove it, not sure which. But the guy from fish and wildlife said they must keep the waterways safe. That angers me so much. That’s the alligator’s home and people should know not to swim in their habitat. Is it possible you could get the alligator and save it from being killed? I love crocodilians and wish people would realize how important they are to the ecosystem. I think they are amazing animals. And I just adore Casper. He is so cute. Look forward to more videos. Love and respect from Tennessee. 🥰🐊
I hate that SO much too! Fish and wildlife can’t keep all waterways safe, just stay out of them!! Why is it so hard to understand?! Gosh, I could get on a rant but I won’t! Lol
@@courtneyjohnson7341 Lol. I understand completely. I could rant for hours. Sometimes I think humans just get dumber every day. I saw a comment from some guy that said alligators are evil monsters. I told him what I thought of him and his asinine comment. I live in East Tennessee and we’ve heard that alligators are making their way up here through the river systems. The poor things have to go somewhere. They’re being pushed out of their homes because of habitat loss and human encroachment.
Unfortunately people do a lot of less than intelligent things and animals usually end up paying for the mistakes that people make. Hopefully at some point people will wise up so animals don't have to suffer for it. Maybe people like Chris who share their knowledge and experience will help people get a better mindset.
@@tammyrollins5199 I live near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and we constantly have tourists trying to pet or feed our black bears. Then if they get scratched or bitten TWRA will usually euthanize the poor animal. It’s so infuriating.
There are no gators here in SoCal, but I think I’ll have to practice his self-protection tactics for when I’m being attacked by the other wild animals out here. People.
Kidding. I just enjoy this guy’s videos and seeing how beautiful gators truly are.
It's obvious that reading the body language of a crocodilian accurately, and figuring out which mode they're in and then responding appropriately, requires a lot of skill and experience, which most of us don't have. But having some options, any options, is better than nothing. I think a lot of us have seen the video of the young female trainer in Utah(?) whose hand got bit, and we saw the different things she did to minimize the damage before she had any help. All of these videos are useful and repeated viewings can help if we really want to understand this subject.

I love videos like this. While I don't particularly find alligator's interesting (before watching your videos), it's worth watching your videos. Why? We're learning 20 years of your experience and wisdom in a few hours. And that dedication is invaluable alone.
I had in Naples a 12 foot gator (male) chase me in a territorial instance .it first surfaced, after I got on other bank ,and vibrated after surfacing then launched and crossed the area quite quickly with a lot of slashing before going back to where I was at first when I sensed it's presents in a cove on other bank .I was glad that the pursuit stopped because it was a flat bank and quite flat for 30 feet back from water and at it's speed I could've been food .I have done gator removal and that intimidated me it was huge

Chris, you are clearly a super logical and organised guy - I could see that it pained you not to be able to set this video out in neat little sections, but honestly, I think that probably bothers you more than it does us the viewer. 😄 This is super interesting stuff to learn, plus it's nice to listen to someone so knowledgeable and yet not over sensationalised, so I'm not worried about any back and forth on overlapping topics.
It's really cool to watch you interact with gators, and being so close to them with camera. In my life I generally use the strategy to keeping my distance for safety which is generally "keep at least one gator free state between me and gators" ;)
You’re not all over the place. You make complete sense. It’s in the moment decision. But as a Floridian I don’t go in lakes or ponds because I love life and I am smart.

Hi Chris Former zoo keeper here Worked mostly with mammals but occasionally with reptiles at the zoo veterinary. My question: the alligators seem very docile in your videos but I have seen alligators strike with lightning speed. If Casper wanted to get you, how would you be able to predict a strike as he is floating by? Aren't you in danger if he really wanted to attack? Great videos and narrative. Not Chris, but from what I’ve seen, I’m assuming his answer would be along the lines of “Casper doesn’t have a reason to attack me. He knows I’m not a threat or prey from prior experience”

I lived on the gulf coast for many years. I'd fish in an area that was infested with gators and never had a problem. They would surface near me because of curiosity. They're amazing to watch.

I live in South Florida, a stones throw from a massive wetlands that borders on the everglades. Gators are a common occurrence, and generally people are appropriately relaxed about sharing a habitat with them. But dang, some people are definitely too relaxed about it. Sure they're not likely to go from hanging out on a canal bank to bothering you, but oh boy some people seem to try to give them a reason

Interesting! I wanted to ask you about Toothy's bite to Chandler when he (and you and many others) were catching her for transport to Chandler's property. That sounds like it would have been a defensive bite, right? The "i think these people are trying to kill me and I need to kill them first". You said it would be immediate bite and death roll. But she barely bit him and let him go. (Nevermind 'barely bit him' still landed him in the hospital for four days lol.) So was that not defensive after all? Terratorial since you guys were in her enclosure? Or is this how you said that crocs and gators are very different? I would love an analysis/break down of that situation from you. Cause you were right there at the edge of the pond to witness it.
So you are correct that it was defensive, but it was in murky water, and she really seem to have just slashed him but not actually bit him. Like the jaws slashed across his leg and he had two deep cuts but the jaws didn’t actually close on his flesh. If they had, I think she would’ve rolled his leg right off

I have a question/hypothesis based on what you told us about their predatory curiosity as they approach: before the gator completely closed the gap, would it be beneficial to try and push yourself vertically up to expose more of your actual size? I think that for the smaller ones you talked about, some could be deterred by it just by seeing "oh that's kinda big".
