  • How old is Casper? How old can gators get?? How do we know how old gators are? That’s the neat part, we don’t! Listen and find out why!
~You can come swim with me and Casper! If you want to come join you can book online now, go to www.crocodilechris.com Let me know if you want to go! Observation and photos only at @evergladesoutpost and tour participants are separated from gators by safety fence. Remember all the gators you see me working with are rescue nuisance gators, caught from the wild as big as you see them now! The state kills 7k-8k each year. We volunteer our time to catch & rescue them and bring them to sanctuaries, unpaid. Wetsuit by @cressi1946

Hi Chris, I love your videos! I know we all love Casper, but I'd be interested in a video about female alligators, specifically mama gators! What time of year do they lay eggs, what's common behavior for a mama gator, and how long do the babies stay with their mother? And, will a mama gator ever eat her babies like other species do?
Thank you for the great videos, and for keeping us all educated on these incredible animals! 😊

Yes in Belgrade zoo we have alligator Muja ❤
Muja (Serbian Cyrillic: Муја; pronounced MOO-ya)[1] (hatched 1937) is an American alligator living in the Belgrade Zoo and is the oldest known alligator in captivity. Having arrived at the zoo in 1937, Muja has lived through both the Axis and Allied bombings of Belgrade during World War II, as well as the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999.

Chris, your videos are so interesting. I could listen to you talk about crocodilians all day. I agree with you about trophy hunters. They are disgusting. For some reason they think they must kill all predators. And it doesn’t make them look like a big strong man. It makes them look pathetic. I have a question. When you run your hand along Casper’s back, what does the skin feel like. I know they have those bony plates but curious about the skin around them. Please hug Casper for me. He is just so adorable. Love from Tennessee. 🐊

Thanks for always coming in with the educational videos man! I live in Beaumont, Texas and there’s a reptile zoo/alligator farm here with a “Legendary” 92 year old alligator named Big Al, who supposedly is the largest alligator in captivity in the State of Texas at over 13 feet. This makes me wonder if he’s actually that old or not!

I love that you acknowledge anecdotal and empirical evidence as being as valid, if less weighty, as documented evidence.
Discarding pre-'method' evidence is actually very unscientific in the way it curtails the growth of knowledge. The people who dismiss this information out of hand are laudably trying to be logical but failing to be scientific.
I only just discovered your channel, but already love it.

A lot of guides are educated by other guides and their dads and so on. They don’t know they don’t know, and don’t research. They just operate on faith of the “oral traditions.” and assume the science falls in line, and no one corrects them. Not their fault, but definitely misinforming. Thank you for your approach. Ive been loving this the last few weeks. Like I went from Shark Week to Gator Days 😂

There’s this guy named Masaru who’s a spear fisherman in Japan that has a UA-cam channel, and a guy he knew had a gator for 20 years. When the guy moved, the licensing for gators changed in Japan, so he had to euthanize the gator. It was 12’ long and looked pretty healthy (maybe the bottom jaw was a little short? Not sure); Masaru skinned, cut up for meat, and stuffed the head for the guy. It was pretty interesting to watch. So they can get pretty big even in 20 years in captivity, but I’d imagine they need whole prey and a good enclosure with access to sunlight. I’d imagine wild alligators might have a hard time getting all the food they need especially during certain years due to weather or even natural disasters.

That is a great topic. Indeed, with studies that commenced only about 50 years ago, some myths were busted i.e. growing throughout their lives. I've seen some big ones (about 14 ft.) in the South Carolina swamps. I was well-protected from them and at a distance. Yes, some have said that these creatures can live 150+ years, but it can be attributed to only folklore. The truth of the matter is, up until a few decades ago, no one cared about these animals. They were considered "worthless varmints" infesting the southern swamps.

Such a great video, very good way of explainign things. But I was wondering about this captive held alligator who was undersized and couldn't open his mouth. Is it possible to improve such animal's health in any way, I am sure there is less stress for the animal now than it was before, but besides that, for an example the mouth opening lenght, is it possible to improve that?

at least 6 years 😂😂. we can really only make educated guesses by looking at the enviroment they come from and how rough they look. and usually when they are really old there are some signs, but nothing that can make anyone close to precise. its really just not reliable enough to try to make an estimate.

Hear me out on this one. Obviously Casper would eat Chris. However, it's possible that action would induce some level of stress in Casper. Seeing how its Chris who feeds him often and Chris goes into the water with him after he feeds. I believe this routine for such a long time if broken would induce stress in Casper, but I could be wrong. Consider this scenario. If you had a big fake tree log in that enclosure, and half of it was in the water the other half stuck out and it was something Casper was always around for years, if you suddenly removed the log would he would feel uncomfortable and stressed that his environment has changed?

You could probably make an entire new branch of science just actually investigating what native ppl know. Like that's not even cryptozoology bc 1) it's a broad category and 2) science really didn't take those claims seriously before, so there really hasn't been any research. But we've seen things like the history of the Franklin artic expedition, or even the coastline of Australia forming being known by natives and recently recorded by science.
