This is a video I’ve been waiting so long for somebody to actually make. So many times have I had to explain all of these things to people when they’re looking for mice that fit them as I’m the tech guy in my group. Thank you so much for making my life easier by just being able to share this video instead of explaining it all time after time.

It's all about the shape! As long as the weight is reasonable the shape is pretty much all that matters. I also like wired because I'm lazy and don't want to ever think about charging. I love a simple mouse like the G203 (or whatever shape best fits you) maybe paracord it and install after market feet and you're good to go.

Been gaming with a mouse/keyboard for 20somewhat years now and the few times I have upgraded my mouse or been forced to replace it, its always came down to ergonomics above everything else for me. And this is not just if the mouse is comfortable for my grip but also the button placements and even the scroll wheel.. you won't believe how many sucky wheels there are.
After that I look for "features" but honestly there's so much bullshit they're trying to sell us it's unreal :P so yes a tip guide like this is great for new people and or those that are unsure.
The main thing a lot of mice reviewers often forget is that for a lot of us a mouse isn't just used for that one gaming session a day, it has to be comfortable for more than that.

Been using a simple wired logitech G203 for several years now on my personal desktop PC. I didn't need anything crazy since I'm nowhere near a competitive gamer. it fits my hand and is super comfortable. Started seeing double click issues about a year ago, but just blowing out around the buttons does the trick. The only issue I actually have is the 2 side buttons are 2 far forward for my usual grip style and I've not been able to break that habit. For my work mouse I use a wireless Logitech M705. I like using wireless with a laptop. It's shape encourages a better grip on it for long periods of time working and you can "unlock" the wheel to get to the end of long documents or scroll past 1000s of lines of text in moments. This is really useful for my work as a support analyst.

I've used a G9x (and it's predecessor) for a long time and I still consider it one of the best simple mice, then I switched to a g900 chaos, which is one of my favorite mice ever made, since it allows wired or wireless, as well as customizable side-buttons (2/4/or none) and it's ambidextrous (which surprisingly makes it feel good even if you're right-handed).
But since I got a g600 for an mmo (to free up finger movement on the KB when you need to move and jump and use skills all at the same time), I've come to appreciate it so much more than any other mouse. I use it in games, for work, for everyday browsing, and even file operations; the third top button can act as a g-shift or whatever else you need, to effectively double the amount of commands. It's honestly tied with g900 for the best mouse I've ever used, and I've since bought 2 spares (cause from experience, things I like go out of production/stock faster than I can react). If there's one thing I really wish it had, it's the flywheel that both G9x and G900 have; it's inclusion would've made it my #1 bar none.
EDIT: I'd also add, I had the g502 as well, and it (and every other mouse with rubber-ish surface) is absolutely disgusting after a some use; that rubber crap they're coated with literally melts, and mine looks like I've ripped out a few holes where my fingers touched it all the time (claw grip here). If the shell is not made of plastic (or metal) I don't even look at it anymore. Heck, I'd pay a good premium if the shells/buttons were made of aluminium or similar non oxidizing metal.

I chose a Razer Viper Ultimate, because after looking at dozens and dozens of mice in detail and doing like a week worth of research, comparing reviews and whatnot, it kind of hit all boxes for me.
I wanted something mostly lightweight, not honeycomb-shaped, durable and wireless. I had scrolling issues with my past two mice (XM1r and Roccat Kone Air Pro) after not actually a long time. Before that in the past I of course had a Logitech G203 and (surprise surprise), it had a double-clicking issue after the warranty ran out. I manually bent a copper plate in the switch to fix it for a few months, but it eventually returned.
I gotta say, I've really had it with Logitech and after buying a G930, a G430, a G203 and a G910 in the past, which all had well-timed issues after the warranty expired (2+ years, I think), I won't be a returning customer anymore. The G930 had frequent disconnects, the G430 had its leather get flaky & sticky and fall off, staining everything around it. The G203 with its double-clicking issue and the G910 has such intentionally flimsy keycaps, it's crazy. Only 2 very milky flimsy plastic sticks that hold the keycaps in place. And of course the CTRL key broke off after 2 years with no individual replacement keycap for this particular one in sight. I'm much better served with an actually durable Redragon K556 that has been a great buy and it has lasted me many years already.
I've had it with Logitech. That's why the Superlight was no option for me. It ticked many of the right boxes, but I just know Logitech from experience.
Back in the day Logitech made fantastic and durable mice in the early 2000s. Not anymore.

My deciding factor with my last mouse was optical switches. I was so sick of having mice that eventually end up double clicking and I'm not about to waste time and money opening a mouse up and replacing switches myself. The only con was that I bought a Razer and I have to deal with this horrible Synapse software but yeah, no double-clicking and having that peace of mind is great. Having embedded three Qi chargers in my desk underneath my deskmat, allows me to wirelessly charge my keyboard and mouse without any signs of cables on my desk and without the need of ever pluging in. It's awesome!
Plugged a mini-USB Qi charging adapter into my wireless keyboard and taped it underneath, so that it always charges. My mouse just lives on the Qi-charger when not in use. Only time I ever plug them in is for firmware updates.

I had the G902 and G703 Lightspeed and didn't like them as much, so I sold them. finally a review worth watching. Valid points . Hope players take it on board. I bought a Logitec G Pro hero wired one. Paid 40 box for it. It has a classic design. No fancy buttons and lights or extra weights (like G502 which is far more expensive) and this is the best mouse I've played games with. layout in hand is perfect and has the same sensor as more expensive ones . All these fancy RGB lights and buttons has no effect whatsoever on your gaming performance neither on how accurate and consistent the mouse is in tracking ( which is the most important part in gaming ) .

And the recharge dock is really nice and you won’t ever forget to charge the mouse. But the biggest pro about the mouse is how smooth the mouse moves and how smooth the laser is, mixed with the fastest mouse buttons it’s just an overall great mouee!

Features meant for gaming can also be dead useful for productivity! Reprogrammable buttons and macro buttons are both great for doing things in complicated software programs that rely on lots of keyboard shortcuts for the fastest workflow. Macros can be used outside of games for doing tedious simple tasks like copying a list of number values from a text document, using them for a calculation with the calculator app, and then pasting them into a table or another list somewhere. Provided you know the appropriate desktop keyboard shortcuts for navigating around the operating system and the specific programs you are using.
I despise mice that have navigation buttons for backward and forward history browsing, which don't let you change them, and are easy to press by accident. They can very easily lead to catastrophe if you're doing work in an odd web app in a browser, and the app doesn't have an auto save feature. Just one history back action, and it can erase all the work you have done for potentially hours.

The main things I wanted from my mouse was for it to be super light but without that honeycomb shell cus I didn't like the idea of gunk buildup/potentially getting something stuck inside. So I went with a Razer Viper (wired) cus that seemed like the best bet.
I'll be honest, I wish the side buttons were a bit bigger/protruded a little more, and I'm still not 100% loving the slightly mushier click from their special switches. I can definitely get over the mushy thing tho because you really don't notice it after a while and it's great to not worry about double-clicking.
I think my ideal mouse is the newer Deathadder cus I loved that shape and they went and made it much lighter + all the benefits of the newer switch, but I can't really justify the change for now

    The mouse I wish for:
    - G502 wireless without rgb running on AA batteries as with high endurance on G603 (or standard rechargeable lithium cells - the point is that the batt is easily bought and replaced when it dies);
    - Same rubberized mouse wheel like on the wireless version, preferably easily replaceable when the rubber coating wears down, also for the side rubber grips;
    - Hotswap switches, including the middle mouse button that is currently that annoying tiny domed microswitch - I use it often and it's risky to replace it when it dies.
    I can dream, can't I.

I usually buy budget peripherals, and have owned steelseries rival 100, rival 110, logitech g102. I bought a mm720 which started having issues. Returned it and got hyperx haste instead and it's the best mouse I have had ever. I know that I have had only budget mice, but I have zero complaints. The shape is good, no spinoff and liftoff problems for me. It's priced well and performs great. The build quality is reasonable too, no squeeks and creeks. I was skeptical that the internals of the mouse will be covered with dust in a few months but I don't see anything, says a lot because I live in North India, where dust is an issue.

Factors that I look at when buying a mouse: 1) Weight 60g or less is ideal, if it's over 70g that's a dealbreaker and I won't buy. 2) Size and shape, if a mouse is too small it will cramp my hands, if it's too big it won't feel like I have as precise of an aim as I want. No extreme shapes (sorry Kone Pro Air).
My main mouse is the G Pro X Superlight and it will take an impressive mouse to dethrone it, Finalmouse Starlight 12 phantom is close 2nd place for me.

All gaming mice from reputable brands will have good internals (sensor, PCB). What I look for now is how other factors of the mice allow me to use it well:
    1. Shape
    2. Switches/buttons
    3. Skates
    4. (If wired) cable
2-4 are adjustable with after market modding. So shape is the thing I look for.

To simplify the video, if you want an MMO mouse, get a mouse with many side buttons like the Razer Naga and other brands with products alike. If you want an FPS mouse, you need a comfortable mouse with a tight grip for your finger tips, for this go for any textured mouse with deep slopes on the buttons like the Razer Viper or other mice alike it. If you want a productivity mouse, go for the MX master 3 from Logitech. If you want a mouse to fit all needs, since i am a Razer fan, I'd go for the basilisk V3, look at the basilisk V3 for why I chose it and choose another mouse that has similar features to it if you don't like Razer.

My deciding factors for a mouse are the durability, and the amount of buttons. 2 side buttons is not enough. 12 is too many. 4 is ideal. I got the steelseries rival 5 cause it has 5. I prefer 2 DPI buttons; sadly this only has 1. However, it claims 3x durability compared to most mouse switches I have used. It isn't my perfect mouse, but it is good. My perfect mouse would have four identical side buttons, the two DPI buttons, and would be maybe a teeny tiny touch lighter than the rival 5.

I'm personally a fingertip gripper who, as of late, has become interested in finding a mouse with a control nub (like the ones found on the Nintendo 3DS for example) or d-pad where my right thumb would be (plus another on the opposite side which my ring finger could use), to mimic the kinds of joysticks found on DualShock-styled controllers (as typically used in game consoles), so that I could opt to move the character with said control stick or d-pad on the mouse instead of the WASD or arrow keys on the keyboard.
An extra button, mouse wheel, analog control nub, or d-pad in front of or behind where the left, right, and middle mouse buttons would normally be would also be nice, since my fingertip-grip style allows for me to use my flexible fingers to move between buttons as needed, much like moving between buttons on a controller.

  • @blahorgaslisk7763

Last time I bought a mouse? Oh that takes me back almost ten years. Yep that's right, I've been using the same mouse, a Mionix NAOS 8200, for the last nine years and change...
Buying this particular mouse was the result of testing a lot of mice and having a lot of problems with the quality of the components. It's all started with me buying a mouse that was the most comfortable and probably the best over all mouse I've ever owned. Now this might sound strange, but I can't recall the brand, just that the model was called M3 or 3M. It was marketed by a brand that a long time ago was known for their mouse surfaces, disappeared from the market and then many years later came back but now with a mouse instead of a new mouse mat. This mouse was large and many ridiculed it for it's size, but most reviewers ended up loving it. Even avid claw grip users were converted to use a full palm grip with this mouse and loved it.
However, while the feeling and specs were top notch the scroll wheel sensor was total garbage. After replacing the mouse twice under warranty I finally returned it and got another mouse, Steel Series Sensei sounds familiar. I don't remember what it was but this to broke twice, and in the exact same way both times, so I returned that too. I do remember swapping it in for a Logitech something that also got returned to the shop.
By now I was well known at that shop and the teller and I was going through possible alternatives. I was looking at QPAD as they had some mice that were physically pretty similar to the one that kicked off this adventure in mouse QC testing. He told me that they were decent but with my luck that probably wouldn't be enough. But the Mionix mice had almost no returns and the NAOS series were shaped almost like the QPAD mice. Well that last thing turned out to be not entirely true.
So I bought the latest and greatest they had. The 8200 had been released just a few weeks ago and the only difference between it and the old model was the colors and the sensor. So I took a gamble that the quality would be the same. Now this mouse is just slightly smaller than I'd like. The M3, or what it was called, filled my palm better and had a slight shelve that kept my pinkie from dragging on the mouse surface. The palm swell also kept the base of my hand from touching the mouse surface which the NAOS not quite manages. However it was the closest I'd come and I gave it a chance and here I am, nine years later and still using the same mouse. I just took a look at it and apart from the skids being a bit worn it still looks like new, and all the switches still work perfectly with no sign of missing clicks or double clicking. It also have very low friction and almost no stiction. The only mouse I've had that slid better had ceramic skids instead of teflon, but this is about as good as it gets with regular skids.
The only problem I had with this mouse was that it stopped working whenever I switched between machines using a KVM. Turned out I wasn't the only one and Mionix updated the firmware to solve the issue. After that I haven't had a single problem that I can blame on this mouse.
So what would I look for in a new mouse?
More of the same! The sensor isn't quite up there with the top performers today, so a light upgrade there wouldn't be unthinkable. The shape, while good, is not perfect. It could be just a bit larger with more pronounced finger groves and a shelf to keep the pinkie from dragging. Ceramic skids would be nice. A well placed "sniper" button would also be a welcome addition, though I figure those has fallen out of fashion in the last few years. As for side buttons, I have a hard time using them on any mouse, and yes I've had mice with a whole bunch of those and I concur with what's said in the video, they are just not as easy to use as you first think. I tried to learn but in the end it wasn't worth it for me. Perhaps it's worth it for diehard MMO players but other than that I think staying away from them is a good idea. But a single well placed button for the thumb that can be pressed without shifting the grip, now that I could learn to use.
Edit: I checked and I've only had the mouse for a bit more than eight years, not nine as I wrote above. Sorry about that.

My Viper Mini is on the way, ordered it 4 days ago. Main deciding factor was price (40$ for top notch mouse is excellent and i got it for even lower - 29$), sensor, weight, cable and click latency (one of the lowest)

This is why I am using Steelseries Prime wireless. Ergonomic shape for better feel for gaming and normal use. No fancy rgb. Just 2 buttons on the side. This lets it to be just under 80grams for that light feel and of course bigger and longer battery life.

I used to buy a new mouse almost every year, but back then there weren't all these gaming products available. I simply bought based on ergonomics and appearance. My last gaming mouse was a Razer Uroboros. I liked it at first, but at some point the battery ran out, the thing literally ate up batteries and the buttons started creaking. Furthermore, the software annoyed me so much that I went back to using my old office mouse. I'm currently thinking about getting a gaming mouse again, but the prices are now astronomical.

1:30 yes, I did. I checked out his channel for the first time 8 years ago thanks to his Battlefield 4 videos. He just recently announced he leaves UA-cam.

G502 like every man and his dog. proteus core for 4 years; still pretty happy. the sliders need replacing, but the buttons are easy enough to find. weights were a gimick
