CAF Basic Training | Inspection Standards (BMQ/BMOQ)

- A brief video overview of my quarters before our inspection.
Let me break down a few of the details:
- Everyone in the platoon must have perfectly identical layouts
- Bed with tight hospital corners, 30cm fold.
- Maintain platoon standard of how the rifle is laid out.
- Windows PERFECT
- Toiletries and clothes all placed and folded in precise spots.
- Uniforms buttoned and zipped up the way you would wear it / equal spacing.
- Bathroom perfectly cleaned and dry.
- Halls perfect.
It would be a 30 minute video to go over every inspected detail. Basically every inspection is adding more details and standards to enforce. You are supposed to have things wrong and you are issued corrections for them. Just don't get in trouble for the same thing twice.
-
Dislike the video if you can't pass inspection
One dislike. Lol
@@TactDB I think this is an Officers Barrock. If NCM at least you get a bed in that barn.
failed every inspection except for CI hmmmmmmmmmmmm
I see what you did there
Ey bro is that green section?
I remember in basic when they required us to have a "desk picture" ... I found it odd (I guess it was a morale thing) and remembering one guy put up a picture of another recruits mom...
My buddy was telling me when he was in basic one guy just had a picture with a stock image of a family in it
its now since every platoon has their own standard. my first platoon in basic we had to put a picture, but the second platoon i was in after an injury they didn't care.
I remember when my shirts got better and better every week from ironing... I only ironed them once.
@@envirex That's what I had LOL
Our standard was a picture of Owen Wilson. one recruit lost points for no Owen Wilson
you dont win, you just get a little better each time.
I hear that in Cleveland's voice everytime.
I graduate on the 29th of November. Lived in Green sector, certainly don't miss the inspections. Granted my MCpl was pretty chill during the inspections, still hated the whole setup haha. Don't worry for anyone that plans to join the CAF, they will always find something wrong! Nice video!
Really?
@@gaipa2006 Yup, you have interviews throughout your course and during my last interview my MCpl said that they will always say something is wrong, even if it's perfect aha
@@SoupAhhh alright, thanks for letting me know. I have some questions that need to be answered.
@@gaipa2006 if your layout is perfect, they will start looking in places you dont think to clean. then once those are clean, they will find something else.
Ah, I remember the fan that sounds like a jet taking off.
Had a recruit with a dead fly during inspection, and so for the rest of the inspection, he had to bring the fly around in his hand to every person and say "I can not take care of myself nor this fly". Pretty fucking funny that was XD!!! Bravo 21 represent
Brilliant
how can anyone do that without losing it laughing? Bc you dont laugh, it'll make it worse on yourself.
lmao had one of the daily security inspections and they found quite a bit of dust and hair somewhere. They balled it up, threw it in a ziploc bag, and told the course senior to write a full 3 or 5 page auto-bio for his new pet mouse by the morning
I cant wait to be in that building. Thanks for the look inside.
Seeing everything already laid out and the place cleaned and the bed made, activated my adrenaline response because I was expecting course staff to walk through that door at any second.
In other words, this really brought me back - even though we slept in our cots in the middle of the armoury.
Pro tip for blue sector, if you cover the vents in the shower blast the hot water and stuff a chair in there you get a sick sauna. You can get at least four guys in there just chillin after hours sweatin it out. Fun times.
This! I served the C SCOTs for two years.
And this puts a smile on my face. 😊 Id be stoked to be training with someone like this.
Finally someone posted the washrooms!! always wondered if there were showers per rooms or if it was a communal showers. Thank you so much for including it!
We had communal showers lol but these guys apparently don’t
Very nice. As enlisted, we would have killed to have quarters like this. Good old open bay with 80 of your mates.
Thank You For Your Service 😊
Very satisfying to watch. Thank you.
You off to basic soon bro?
@@sc7244 I wish
Finally got accepted after two long years. Im so excited!!!!
Same!
Same haha
Impressively clean!
Have your phone and living in the Blue sector? Someone is having a gucci time at Basic.
No electronics taken away from our platoon. It was awesome.
Thats Charlie or Alpha Div for sure. Easy bmq with them
Wendel Noel I’m in Charlie 35 and it is not easy basic 😂😂 we were north doored for 5 days straight, inspections 7 times in a week, marked time during one inspection for 45 min straight, and we’ve lost about 15 people to VR and MIR for injuries. So don’t tell me Charlie is soft 😂
@@UbiqueGrid oh snap what's up bro, it used to be a lot harder everywhere else that's why they say that. B div was always the epicenter for hell plats. There was a B platoon that lost 22 in the first 2 weeks and graduated with 1/3 of the original platoon.
@@UbiqueGrid You had to lift your legs repeatedly for 45 mins straight?!?!? How did you even survive?!?!
Well...Thanks for posting, gonna come in good use when I take out a CO-OP.
I get sworn in tomorrow, off to St.Jean BMQ January 4th, pumped. 🇨🇦💪
Best of luck.
4 years later. How's it gone?
it doesn't get easier, you just get used to it XD. Hated that different platoons had different standards though.
Thanks for the info, planning on continuing my application soon.
Best of luck!
No privacy. But the time constraints don't allow for much meatgazing.
@Free_Kekistan_69 This is in blue sector, I was in green. The showers in the quarters have curtains for privacy in the green sector. Not sure about blue
@Free_Kekistan_69 yeah by the looks of it, you'll be waiting awhile. I waited a year from when I applied just to start BMQ, and that was without coronavirus lol. Plenty of time to stretch hahaha. If you have any questions you can PM me, I'm fresh out of BMQ so it's all fresh in my mind :)
@Kev always happy to help. Go for it!
Man.. that's how the blue sector looked like. I never thought I would say this but I miss my time at CFLRS...
Dang that’s way different set up than green sector, last inspection our staff played baseball, 3 strikes for people not having things labeled =all of your items being piled in the laundry room with everyone else’s gear 😂
Awesome Im planning in joining the Army👍
Post more of your military
Experiences or even vlog them please!!!
I have every intention of posting more of my experiences when they occur and when appropriate.
One dude in my platoon, his bed was not up to standard. MCpl had him doing about turns tucked under his sheets
Wheels on the barracks box up, thats a little weird but if you're standardized than i guess it's good.
Hey man! Do you mind if I use your footage for my channel?? I will refer to your channel in the video :-)
Absolutely!
@@JoshBortolotti Thanks brother! Collab me thinks is needed!!

Thank you for your service.
I guess long gone are the days of bunk beds and lockers LOL that's the way it was when I went through BMT 8901 nice work gentlemen
Ahh I remember those rooms and the weird zigzagging hallways and just the way the building was built in general was just weird
Memories. Was in blue sector as well
Brings back memories. BTW there's dirt or soap scum in the back wall corner the toilet stall.
Waiting for my interview... still wondering if I should got Comm n research or AESop, a bit scared of the motion sickness on AESop... BMQ will be a heavy challenge for me stress wise but I guess I will get on rails after the first 2 weeks... just hope my nerves will survive the first 2 subconscient is strong
A few days ago I got a job offer for infantry and will be starting on September 23rd but will be there on the 21 st, definitely good information to have. Any other tips would be great.
I will be uploading a couple videos soon from BMOQ offering advice. Stay tuned.
Room standards are quite different nowadays - the closet in particular has a significantly different layout. I wonder why - we all have the same equipment (minus the gas suit coveralls, we don't get issued those anymore, they keep them and only issue them during CBRN classes).
Because the standard doesn't actually matter. The staff can do whatever they want.
I tried to get into Reg Serv but my health kept me out :(
Someone was in a Hollywood platoon up in the blue sector.
I was up on the 8th in the green our windows dint open up more then an inch obvious reason of course
We had our Mcpl come in and make us do drill under our bed sheets to get us to make the beds again since everyone slept on top of the sheets after lights out
Good ol' Bed Drill!
How did you get a camera in there
I’ll be joining the reserves when I’m finished high school. Do you have any tips or anything?
I see you're in blue sector! Which floor were you on? I was on the 6th when I was there
How do you learn how to do the exact bed making measurements? Do they have a class to show exactly how to do the room for inspection?
Theres like a slideshow and they expect gou to figure it out
I'm joining the Canadian Army Reserves, cannot wait to join! In 1 years...... i cant wait. :(
I'm joining next year, dude we should go at the same time lol!
Im joining next year aswell! im gonna to apply for Armoured reserve soldier!
Don’t join the reserves if you plan on going reg force
Nothing has changed for the inspection layout since I was there in 2009
It will probably be the same when someone uploads their inspection layout 9 years from now.
The items are the same but the layout is a bit different
Where’s the DEU’s in the locker? The kit on the bunk looks pretty minimal. Easy inspection if you ask me.
Corn flake !! BMQ was fun
I'M FUCKING EXHAUSTED JUST WATCHING THIS VIDEO CAN'T WAIT TILL I JOIN
Is it blue sec.? Mine was Green on 8th fl without cel., B Div. Glad to see a CAF mbr on youtube, where are you now? Still DP1? Or pat pl?
ROTP in Calgary
found a picture of the staff of charlie 31 in my locker. probably the previous group forgot it. We nailed it on the bilboard in the green sector. Need I say what happened when the sergent saw it?
we learned that day that yes, a whole platoon's bed can infact get inside the green sector bathroom
I’m wondering do you need to bring your own stuff? Or does the boot just give you all the stuff for washing, cleaning your teeth and stuff?
You need to buy your own stuff.
So what happens if you fail inspection 🤔
Canadians have the best camo I've ever seen
We are possibly changing to Multicam
@@JoshBortolotti i heard it but i dont think so as they where going to sign a contract with Crye Precision and crye said it was a insult to offer that much for the wanted quantity tho ive heard people say there developing better cadpat more like Marpat
we invented Cadpat
Is the interview hard
I completed my bmq this past summer at bold eagle but, I didnt want to join the army at first. But now I've just been thinking whether or not to join
Did you have to do blood work and urine test when you went for your medical ? Thanks
No I didn't
Hey buddy I am just curious when you start your basic training are recruits assigned to this semi private rooms not like American movies a huge are with bunk beds and a general shower for everyone thanks for your answer I may join hopefully soon
Sergio Jaramillo Once you get there they’ll assist you without being on your ass about it on the first day there, it’s no where near like the US army recruiter gets it but it depends on your instructors you have, you will get yell at from time to time haha, depends where you’ll be located in the building because for me we had 6 people in a pod but with private rooms with doors, 3 sinks one toilet and a shower same layout in the video. I was located on the north side so I didn’t get to see the other rooms, but I tried to look when we where on cleaning duty on week 10 haha
@@og_halo5111Thank you so much I am trying to lose weight to get as fit as possible really excited to join
Heading to Quebec next month for my BMQ, nervous but really excited! Any tips you could give me?
Check out my video on Advice from Basic Training
I feel sorry for you
@@Ed-ds3hj all good brother just over 2 weeks away from graduating🤝🏼 safe to say it’s been an experience lol. Love it though definitely my favourite job
damnnnn you guys had doors? I was in green sector we had open concept with wall dividers about 4.5 feet tall.
Im planning on joining very soon, it looks like they have their own rooms, is this accurate?
Hi Josh, How’re you? I’ve a degree in communication and next year after I get my Canadian Citizenships I want to join by the direct entry officer. My 2 options would be Public affairs or Human Resources. Public affairs I heard that’s really hard and common just by internal transfer. And Human Resources I didn’t find any position for it on the DEO. Do you Know something about these 2 fields through DEO process? Great video and you’re an awesome communicator.
I don't have any personal experience with either of those jobs, but you are right, public affairs is a difficult one to get accepted to. I know, I applied.
Nothing has changed in over a decade. I was sprawled out hammer puking in your bathroom after my first weekend off btw. And again every weekend there after. Oct-Jan 2009-2010. Kaeble Platoon whattup
Hey I finished my aptitude test just over a month ago but still havent heard back for my interview/medical. How long did the process take for you from application to basic training?
I uploaded a video answering that exact question
I tried about 5 years ago when i was 45 but failed the medical :( high blood pressure and type II diabetes
hey any update how di it go
@jassindeepsingh5609 I'm currently in BMQ in the CAF (albeit reservist), but the Medical for me took about 6 months.
Where is the rest of the stuff that is supposed to be hanging in your closet? And looks odd that your boots aren't touching on the bed.
If you are referring to DEU's and non-CADPAT clothing in the closet, I wasn't issued them yet. And our platoon standards for boots was for equal spacing between each other.
What are the brown boots for? Because at the recruiting Center the corporal told me that the pair I will wear outside won’t be taken into my room for inspections
Not having to clean your outside boots would make life way too easy. Instructors decide what is going to be inspected, not the recruitment center.
You have two pairs of regular brown boots. One pair is on your feet and the other for inspection. You’re suppose to rotate the boots.
If I got the feedback survey after handing in my medicals and I have not done the fitness test, does that mean I'm on the competition list? Or do I get a confirmation 2 months after to know if they found something wrong with my medical or not to know 100% that I'm on the competition list?
Fitness Test is done during basic. And they should have indicated at your medical if something was a problem. Other than that you should be good.
@@JoshBortolotti If I had to hand in extra papers for medical assessment and visual acuity, sent those back as pdfs and they only sent me a feeback survey, I'd think that means my medical is probably done and that I am indeed on the competition list.
On one hand, I don't want to call and then end up annoying them because my medical info is not rejected. On the other hand, I don't want to be waiting 2 months just to know that they are missing something from my medical or that some blood work is not good that I don't know about that can get me rejected all along.
I'm going to be here in 6 months !!!
ISO DEMON Ahh i hope ill be there around that time too!
TraydeSlavic See you there buddy !
How did it go??
Hi, it was bmq or bmOq ? Every person has a private room like yours? Thx
As I've heard from the comments, they take away all electronics?
Also I have a bunch of questions lol
Ça dépend vraiment des pelotons haha. Sur mon premier ils nous les laissaient, mais sur mon deuxième ils étaient barrés le jour. Et on en avait le droit 1 heure par soir
0:03 We need more Bort license plates in the gift shop! I repeat: We are sold out of BORT license plates!
Um what?!
@@JoshBortolotti its a simpsons reference
Did you pass the inspection ?
Do you know if an electric razor is allowed? Also, do you have a bar of soap for show and one to use? And does the same go for deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc.? My spouse is leaving for basic tomorrow, so exciting :)
Regular disposable razor needs to be used and shown. You can keep a electric one in your personal cubby but can't bring it to the field. I bought body wash and put out a bar of soap for show. For everything else I used the "show" ones.
@@JoshBortolotti thanks so much for the quick reply! Ill let him know :)
What sector was this? I was in green sector on the 4th floor. I felt pretty lucky. It was a lot of bullshit.
Where would I keep the advil and cold meds?
In the locked white cubby
I was thinking of going the Canadian armed forces when I graduate
do officer go through exact same training as infantry in the Canadian military???
The same basic training yes.
Your personal items locker, what is its standard?
Locked.
bruh I hope thoses locks all have the same combo XD
All set to Zero!
What’s your black ankle boots for? Service dress?
DEU's yes
Question: Do you bring the clothe hanger yourself or they give it to you?
They give it to you
You have to buy them yourself at the Canex.
What does it mean when your file is on the competition list for infantry?
It basically means that your recruitment center as deemed you good enough to be forwarded to a national review board. That's when they look at all the applicants and decide who to go with.
Josh Bortolotti thank mate. Can’t wait to get in🙏
Do you recommend bringing “ghost” toiletries for inspections ?
DO it
I recommend actually bringing the toiletries you want to use (toothbrush, body wash etc) and then buying the stuff that will be out for inspections once you get there (at the canex) otherwise you might not get the "right" ones to be uniform with everyone. else.
How long does the application process take? I write my aptitude test this week
Depends on your entry plan. Couple of months to a year on average I would say.
@@JoshBortolotti im doing an direct entry plan as aircraft tech. do you know how long?
Do they teach you how to do these things
Babos123 Qwe Yes everything, the room layout the bed, all that will take a few weeks to get it to that level before you get your rifle in week 4, this is the inspection layout
Hey Josh, do they make you do pushups and situps during the "pre basic" evaluation ? Thanks
I did a couple pushups and squats yes.
@@JoshBortolotti Thanks for the reply brotha. I was 227 pounds a week ago, now I'm down to about 212. Trying to get below 210 pounds before I go. I know I'll be able to do everything, despite being a little outta shape. If you fail the forces test, are you DQ'd? Thanks again for your input and time
The one person who failed their FORCE Test in my platoon was given a 2nd attempt later on. They failed that one too, but they allowed her to do the course anyway. Considering they were already paying over a quarter million dollars for her education they probably figured it was the lesser of the evils and hoped by next summer she would get better.
@@sc7244 I tried to get in when i was older about 5 years ago around 44 or so. I was 225lbs but failed the medical standards. I had developed high blood pressure. When they measured me i was 170/110 i had no idea it was so high. I also was developing Type II diabetes. Im 49 now and im much better shape but still on meds for those conditions so i guess that would preclude me now other than being 49.
Kevin Carey Hey man, sorry to hear about your medical situation. I’m actually now posted to CFB Gagetown as part of 2RCR infantry! Best of luck, stay safe bud .
@caf i can explain my rationales for being ok with something giving scrnarios more thoroughly.
I understsnd people have different linits and ways of seeing something. Giving people other ways of looking will help them make rhose decisions more quickly giving them both safety and orace of mind.
I had a lot of discussions with Andy about it (though we got disconnected on view due to forget medicine) and saw a lot of conversations with USA , troops and higher ups.
The biggest problem for higher ups was they could do housing or attack the source so it was a big mental block for them they couldn't think through.
I don't think they had a roadmap either for a shift in direction.
How did you fold your rain pants 30×30 with the zipper showing?
You fold each leg in half by themselves. I'll be uploading a more detailed video soon detailing this kind of stuff.
@@JoshBortolotti thanks a bunch man!!!
Ah I definitely don't miss St Jean.
Everything almost the same from 2004, Gear is different, gun lockers in cubicle is new to me, man I feel OLD hahahaha!! I bet people are still bangin in the broom closet!
I think the soap in the container might have not been centered. :) Nice shacks. Cornwallis 90.
There are private showers now at CFLRS?
This was in the Blue Sector. 6 Rooms per Pod, one Shower per Pod.
Josh Bortolotti are they all private? If not, how do they determine who get private rooms?
Of course not. Probably a mixture of officer/enlisted bias with a bit of luck sprinkled in.
@@YodaSW2 normally officers get the private rooms but green section is under renovations so ncms stay in the blue
Justin Leduc thanks
What types of personal items are you allowed to bring to basic? I'll be in st jean for BMOQ and was wondering if I'm allowed to bring prescription birth control and my orthothic insoles (getting a waiver for them)? Are there any civilian things you're not allowed to have?
After consulting with my officer cadet friends, it appears that all prescribed items are permitted . As for things not allowed, I'll just say that in your Joining Instructions there is an extensive list of what to bring. Anything else you bring risks confiscation.
@@JoshBortolotti thanks!
Just bring the documentation with your prescription
That's a pretty big room.
Compared to what I thought it was going to be, yeah it was pretty big!
Those rooms are insane... 5 star resort for f sakes
How In shape do you have to be before recruiting??
Basic training won't "get" you into shape, but definitely be ready to run and do push ups
Where are the rest of your uniforms? Hotel St Jean.....
Ah life in blue sector.
For some reason, I miss bmq
No you don't. That's the Nostalgia goggles speaking.
Wheres your DEUs?
