Here's some good advice: Dont think you're better than everyone else, you're as strong as the weakest link. Be humble. Help your buddies. Do what you're told and do it well. If anyone needs help with a task help them. Train daily even after hours and dont be a shitmagnet.
I'm 40 and a permanent resident. Forces are now recruiting permanent residents, so I decided to give a shot. CFAT was very basic, and I qualified for officer roles. I honestly think armed forces is where I actually belong. I'm fit and very disciplined. I was never a 9 - 5 office guy, the software office chair that I was warming for 17 years. Now, finally a chance to redeem myself. I hope things go smoothly following the CFAT exam. My only worry is the timeline it takes for someone to get recruited. They told me 6 - 18 months. A commander at the recruiting center said PRs can expect worst case scenario because they have not pledged loyalty to Canada.
its been 5 months now. how was the recruiting process ? I also a permanent resident but i joined the reserves. for me the process wasn't that long, it took them 4 months to get through my application . if you're still waiting for your application i hope you get in soon.
Don’t wanna shit on your parade hope you heard from someone since. However, 6-18 months isn’t for the recruiting process but only for the background checks. You might have to wait another year and a half possibly before you even get to BMOQ. Best of luck.

Great advise!, I am 42 years old and I am now just deciding to join. I go for my Force Evaluation November 21, 2019. So with the help of CF members and the UA-cam video's they have made, I can gather what to expect from the whole process.
I know you probably know this already, but make sure you never let your age get the best of you. I know guys that are early forties going through basic/qualification courses right now and they're trucking through it. Embrace the suck as you'll learn they like to say
AndrewRodden dont worry about the force test. It’s seriously a joke. I’ve never heard of anyone failing a force test. Make sure you’re prepared for the CFAT though, because that’s what determines what trades you can do. The better you do on that the more options you have.
Stumbled on your videos while researching information about life in the army. I’ve considered joining before and got my CFAT done, but stopped after that. I’ve been finding my civilian life rather unfulfilling, and once again plan to apply. Loved the force’s videos you’ve posted, hope you’ve continued to find success!

The last two, I worked with in the last week of BMQ. The way they are in the video is exactly the way they are in real life. They are blunt, straightforward, and from what i could see hold there candour of the utmost and are just great people to work with.

The school is an incubator for viruses and bacteria because you have people coming from all over the country in an extremely confined space, spreading sicknesses your body may not have been exposed to before. As a result, everyone gets sick at least once in basic. For example, my platoon of 60 had 30 people sick by first aid week (week 3), and I was sick for about 4-5 weeks of the course. I am a fairly healthy person and I have never been sick like that in my life. So, to prepare yourself, bring lots of tylenol, advil and ***HALLS*** (I can't stress enough how important these are). Your staff will probably allow halls. You can also buy these and fisherman's friend at Canex. Cepacol is best if you want to numb your throat. Now, go to the MIR only if you must, for example, get antibiotics.
@@tintinwu4627 BMOQ=basic training. No you can take the course in either English or French. Knowing both languages just makes it easier to socialize with your military colleagues.

Here at CFLRS in Quebec going through BMQ rn, going on week 2 lmaooo. Do what your told and when your told and you’ll do fine. Always pay attention and be careful ! Listen to your instructors instructions !
Was in the original platoon with the guy (can't remember his name), but I still remember him encouraging me in runs and rucks, awesome dude. I also went to TRP and did BMOQA the same time as him. TRP wasn't too bad, but waiting for weeks was NOT fun. My advice to people going into basic is to wear mask even when you're not sick. I caught pneumonia from another candidate since I just didn't cared enough to wear a mask around her.
I’m starting the process to meet with my local Saskatoon recruiter tomorrow! My top three roles are radio tech, construction tech and rangers; for a reserve position, so I can still work my civilian construction work and being able to build a strong physical and mental character from basic training as a CAF Reserve member, as well as the valuable in class training for whatever role I’m best able to fill I don’t have any university degrees so I don’t think I’ll be able to fill a officer role in 2022 but being enlisted will be enough for me I’ll keep in mind my main reasons close to my heart for wanting to join the CAF throughout the training to remind myself why I need to get through it
The amount of sickness in the Mega is so gross. Two different eye infections, shack hack and gastrointestinal sickness. I didn’t get gastro but numerous people on my course did. Seeing somebody puking on the toilet was something else.

I am thinking of going into law and becoming a legal officer, hopefully (for Canadian Military). Can I get my undergraduate and law degree paid for by the military (and then proceed in becoming a legal officer for the military)? Btw very helpful video!!
Expect to fail every inspection for any reason. It is just a game, don't take it personally. It is literally a shit test. Passing inspections doesn't matter, just do exactly what the instructor tells you and dont think about it too much. If you make a mistake there is no excuse, just say no excuse and staff will respect you. Its just a game.
Josh, I know you've probably seen tens if not hundreds of U.S. basic training videos. What are the biggest differences between our (States) and your basic especially discipline (yelling, hazing, etc)?
The most immediate and noticeable difference is that Air Force, Army, and Navy all do basic training together. This is because of the unification of our branches in the 60s. Otherwise it is size, history, budget, equipment, and bilingualism. Smaller size, smaller budget, a history of loyalty to the British Empire (saying thank you is met with "Don't thank me, thank the Queen!") and always working alongside allies (we train with that philosophy, Canada has never fought a war alone). Plus you have to get yelled at in two languages, which is especially confusing if you only speak one of them. The fundamentals I imagine are very similar. Our small arms platforms are mostly the same M16=C7, M4=C8, M249=C9, M240=C6, GWagons instead of Humvees, German Leopard 2 tanks instead of Abrams. Abusive hazing is pretty much on its way out, the CAF is training smarter in more recent years.
@@JoshBortolotti don't forget the length of time. Canadian Basic Training is vastly longer than our American counterparts. I think closest in length is the USMC. USAF is laughable at 6 weeks...
Take the stairs now, it will help you in the long run. I lived on the 10th floor and there is no access to elevators until graduation day. The first two weeks are going to be awful, and that's the point. You will get used to it sometime after the first two weeks and then its just a matter of keeping focus on that goal. You will get sick, bring any kind of non-drowsy cough / cold medicine and a multi vitamin or vitamin C supplements. We were pretty much taught how to do everything but the lessons on cleaning and housework type of stuff is very much glossed over, please do it now, learn how to make your bed, learn how to fold clothes / towels, iron, and shine shoes. Day 1 I had to help a guy make his bed at 5am, not the best way to start off BMOQ. Finally, everyone will say this and everyone means it, don't take it personally. No one hates you here, its all a game of Simon says. Simon is usually just a funny french guy who was told to yell and be mad all the time, don't worry about it, do what they say/ask and then laugh at all the dumb shit when you can. Oh also, if you do it in the winter or close to the winter, for the love of god bring the winter socks, goretex socks, ice jacket, extra gloves, the neck gaiter, and big fuck off amount of hand warmers!

It all depends. Do you have a bachelor‘s degree? If you do you just need to be able to prove where you went to school get transcripts in any additional paperwork your recruitment office asked for. Definitely contact your local recruiter
Watching this in prep for BMOQ at start of May. I feel like I should be fine in regard to relations with others, drill, ect My main worry is leadership during missions and tactics. Is there any general rules of thumbs that I should consider when mission planning? Thank you very much

Drill test was Monday of Week 5. It was about a 6? You spend a lot of time learning it so it's just a muscle memory thing. After that you wont really do drill until graduation.
Hey Josh, was hoping to be able to ask you some questions directly about BMOQ, maybe some more specific advice re: kit inspection tips/tricks (ghost kit) and usual stuff to look out for that maybe you missed the first time. I'm coursed for BMOQ March 9, and in the meantime apart from working out I was thinking of maybe making some sort of 'holy grail' training/tips booklet and kinda having it be the product of a few different waves of successful candidates.

That being said, from 'out here' it's hard to know exactly the reason everything needs to be the way it is, or the little stuff that helped that maybe you learned by trial/error... I guess what i'm going for here is to make a booklet that can run somebody through the details, the prep, the unofficial list of stuff to bring...
@@daft9inety6ixer57 I also included information in the description as well. I have to say I'm not sure a booklet would do any good because these standards can vary dramatically. It is completely up to your specific staff what they want. The inspections are set up in such a way where they slowly build upon their expectations for you to evolve and adapt. It's organic, and your platoon mates will spend a great deal of time figuring out how to do it. I do not want to discourage you from trying to create any "holy grail" of tips, just know that the training is expertly designed to teach you the best methods while you are there. But if you would like to ask me any specific questions, feel free.
@@JoshBortolotti I've heard similar from friends, and with the new changes that have been/will be made to BMQ/BMOQ i'm sure it won't do me much good either come to think of it. I hear the weapons drill will be a little easier (you'll be able to drop your mag etc), have you heard anything else about changes?
@@daft9inety6ixer57 I have not heard about any changes to drill. I know that they were experimenting with ways to make training shorter while still covering all necessary components. Trimming the fat off of the scheduale if you know what I mean. I did Mod 1 in Summer 2018 and Mod 2 in Summer 2019, so I'm now officially out of the loop regarding changes.
Do good in school and have some interesting extracurriculars. Pick an occupation and degree you are interested in. Perhaps even apply to a regular university somewhere in the country. Indicate that you have done this and that way if there is no spots in RMC open, you can still get into the ROTP program. If you do get into RMC then just decline the regular university offer.
Learn to swim! I doubt you’d be able to join in most positions if you can’t. I know the us navy has swimming courses for individuals who struggle in the water, but you have to be able to swim and tread water.

Not necessarily, depends on where in Canada they're from. The difference is more notable when you have a Canadian and an American speaking side by side.

@@TheEpicDartfish typically they will want you to finish your VIE to show commitment. It's not a one size fits all approach though, situations can be different.
Well I don't know you personally so I couldn't direct you in a particular way. All I can say is look through all of the information available online, and inquire with your nearest recruitment center on the aptitude test, which helps filter your intelligence and personality traits towards better suited trades. I thoroughly investigated lots of other trades before picking the Infantry. If you are looking at joining your nearest reserve unit, then you may already be limited to what trades are available to you. Go talk to them personally.
@@katerinakiriakakis1584 Sections really need to support the IC being evaluated. 21C needs to be johnny-on-the-spot with the ADDREPs. ALWAYS request transport IF it's available, because if you dont you WILL hike the 5km to the objective. Nav team needs to get cracking on the sandtable and time estimates. No mission is supposed to go according to plan, some curveballs will be thrown at you, so the most important thing to do is follow orders. The IC needs the teams to follow the orders, as the majority of his/her evaluation is on command and control, not necessarily tactics. Destroy sandtables before launching any mission. I got docked marks because it could give the enemy valuable Intel in that hypothetical overrun of the FOB. You wont be in BIVs, but you wont get any sleep. Count your blessings. The occasional 20 min nap can help, but not at the expense of the team. My section ended up rotating napping fireteam partners before every mission. Actually figure out EVERY possible situation that could happen during rehearsals 10 min from mission launch. What happens if we get hit with arty? Suicide bomber? Enemy vehicles? Civvie vehicles? Prisoners? CBRN attack? Have legit backup everything! Nav, medic, detention, etc. Appoint a 3IC in case they kill your 2IC. Do NOT appoint backup sigs. IC is the backup sig. White light allowed for search and rescue missions! You should be loud and visible in that situation, so keep that in mind. Come up with codewords for VCPs. For us, if weapon was found: "Artemis", if explosive: "Zeus" Dont be too mean to the actors playing Eastland/Westlanders. We had a OCdt literally body slam a guy when we called "Artemis" Just a few off the top of my mind. Not to much else I can say a day out from it. Best of luck and let me know how it goes!
I am a fresh-faced recruit awaiting my aptitude test I'm just trying to get an idea what basic training or basic military qualification has in store for me my grandfather was a former instructor and I heard nothing but horror stories
Got my test coming up in 2 weeks, how long after you write that first test does the next step happen? physical is done same day too? medical? once you are done all of them is it a long wait to basic? Or does that depend on when I sign the contract?
go to the canadianforces reddit page. from what ive read, youre put in a pool of applicants and the wait is indefinite and depends on how in demand your trade is, how well you did on your testing. im applying for the reserves and basically i did my fitness testing and a bunch of paper work one day and a week after i did my health, aptitude test and interview on the same day. If you get the interview, you know you passed your aptitude test. The math portion is CRITICAL for this as if you fail it, you fail everything. i was dumb and didnt do my research and could have done much better if i knew there was a Canadian forces aptitude test APP in the app store but i passed anyway (thank god for my engineering background) and got the interview. Another great tip is when your doing the math portion and you feel thatcertain questions will take longer then time allowed, just circle in a question and mark something to the side so you can move on and try other questions while not worrying about guessing on that other question, i left 7 blank instead of just guessing cause time goes by fast
TRP : Training and Reintegration Program. This is platoon is divided in three; we have the P1, P2 and P3. Those who have a P1 patch are the people who have been injured during training; they are in TRP to heal (but they also physically train). The P2 are for the people who fail the ‘Force test’ in the first week of training, they are in TRP to train with the purpose to pass the test. And the P3 are for the people who are declared heal by the doctor and the people who have pass the force test. The P3 mean that they are ready to go back on platoon.

I’m starting the process to meet with my local Saskatoon recruiter tomorrow! My top three roles are radio tech, construction tech and rangers; for a reserve position, so I can still work my civilian construction work and being able to build a strong physical and mental character from basic training as a CAF Reserve member, as well as the valuable in class training for whatever role I’m best able to fill
I don’t have any university degrees so I don’t think I’ll be able to fill a officer role in 2022 but being enlisted will be enough for me
I’ll keep in mind my main reasons close to my heart for wanting to join the CAF throughout the training to remind myself why I need to get through it

The amount of sickness in the Mega is so gross. Two different eye infections, shack hack and gastrointestinal sickness. I didn’t get gastro but numerous people on my course did. Seeing somebody puking on the toilet was something else.

I don’t think you can go through the ROTP to become a legal officer, I’m sure there are options once you already got your bachelors though
Expect to fail every inspection for any reason. It is just a game, don't take it personally. It is literally a shit test. Passing inspections doesn't matter, just do exactly what the instructor tells you and dont think about it too much. If you make a mistake there is no excuse, just say no excuse and staff will respect you. Its just a game.

Josh, I know you've probably seen tens if not hundreds of U.S. basic training videos. What are the biggest differences between our (States) and your basic especially discipline (yelling, hazing, etc)?
The most immediate and noticeable difference is that Air Force, Army, and Navy all do basic training together. This is because of the unification of our branches in the 60s. Otherwise it is size, history, budget, equipment, and bilingualism. Smaller size, smaller budget, a history of loyalty to the British Empire (saying thank you is met with "Don't thank me, thank the Queen!") and always working alongside allies (we train with that philosophy, Canada has never fought a war alone). Plus you have to get yelled at in two languages, which is especially confusing if you only speak one of them. The fundamentals I imagine are very similar. Our small arms platforms are mostly the same M16=C7, M4=C8, M249=C9, M240=C6, GWagons instead of Humvees, German Leopard 2 tanks instead of Abrams. Abusive hazing is pretty much on its way out, the CAF is training smarter in more recent years.
@@JoshBortolotti don't forget the length of time. Canadian Basic Training is vastly longer than our American counterparts. I think closest in length is the USMC. USAF is laughable at 6 weeks...

Take the stairs now, it will help you in the long run. I lived on the 10th floor and there is no access to elevators until graduation day. The first two weeks are going to be awful, and that's the point. You will get used to it sometime after the first two weeks and then its just a matter of keeping focus on that goal. You will get sick, bring any kind of non-drowsy cough / cold medicine and a multi vitamin or vitamin C supplements. We were pretty much taught how to do everything but the lessons on cleaning and housework type of stuff is very much glossed over, please do it now, learn how to make your bed, learn how to fold clothes / towels, iron, and shine shoes. Day 1 I had to help a guy make his bed at 5am, not the best way to start off BMOQ. Finally, everyone will say this and everyone means it, don't take it personally. No one hates you here, its all a game of Simon says. Simon is usually just a funny french guy who was told to yell and be mad all the time, don't worry about it, do what they say/ask and then laugh at all the dumb shit when you can.
Oh also, if you do it in the winter or close to the winter, for the love of god bring the winter socks, goretex socks, ice jacket, extra gloves, the neck gaiter, and big fuck off amount of hand warmers!

It all depends. Do you have a bachelor‘s degree? If you do you just need to be able to prove where you went to school get transcripts in any additional paperwork your recruitment office asked for. Definitely contact your local recruiter

Scale of 1-10 how hard was drill test? And how long did it take roughly?
Drill test was Monday of Week 5. It was about a 6? You spend a lot of time learning it so it's just a muscle memory thing. After that you wont really do drill until graduation.
Hey Josh, was hoping to be able to ask you some questions directly about BMOQ, maybe some more specific advice re: kit inspection tips/tricks (ghost kit) and usual stuff to look out for that maybe you missed the first time. I'm coursed for BMOQ March 9, and in the meantime apart from working out I was thinking of maybe making some sort of 'holy grail' training/tips booklet and kinda having it be the product of a few different waves of successful candidates.

That being said, from 'out here' it's hard to know exactly the reason everything needs to be the way it is, or the little stuff that helped that maybe you learned by trial/error... I guess what i'm going for here is to make a booklet that can run somebody through the details, the prep, the unofficial list of stuff to bring...
@@daft9inety6ixer57 I also included information in the description as well. I have to say I'm not sure a booklet would do any good because these standards can vary dramatically. It is completely up to your specific staff what they want. The inspections are set up in such a way where they slowly build upon their expectations for you to evolve and adapt. It's organic, and your platoon mates will spend a great deal of time figuring out how to do it. I do not want to discourage you from trying to create any "holy grail" of tips, just know that the training is expertly designed to teach you the best methods while you are there. But if you would like to ask me any specific questions, feel free.
@@JoshBortolotti I've heard similar from friends, and with the new changes that have been/will be made to BMQ/BMOQ i'm sure it won't do me much good either come to think of it. I hear the weapons drill will be a little easier (you'll be able to drop your mag etc), have you heard anything else about changes?
@@daft9inety6ixer57 I have not heard about any changes to drill. I know that they were experimenting with ways to make training shorter while still covering all necessary components. Trimming the fat off of the scheduale if you know what I mean. I did Mod 1 in Summer 2018 and Mod 2 in Summer 2019, so I'm now officially out of the loop regarding changes.
Any advice for someone in grade 12 who is hoping to getting into RMC
Do good in school and have some interesting extracurriculars. Pick an occupation and degree you are interested in. Perhaps even apply to a regular university somewhere in the country. Indicate that you have done this and that way if there is no spots in RMC open, you can still get into the ROTP program. If you do get into RMC then just decline the regular university offer.

Learn to swim! I doubt you’d be able to join in most positions if you can’t. I know the us navy has swimming courses for individuals who struggle in the water, but you have to be able to swim and tread water.
There's no swimming test or requirements. The pool at Saint-Jean has been in reparation for years

@@TheEpicDartfish typically they will want you to finish your VIE to show commitment. It's not a one size fits all approach though, situations can be different.

Well I don't know you personally so I couldn't direct you in a particular way. All I can say is look through all of the information available online, and inquire with your nearest recruitment center on the aptitude test, which helps filter your intelligence and personality traits towards better suited trades. I thoroughly investigated lots of other trades before picking the Infantry.
If you are looking at joining your nearest reserve unit, then you may already be limited to what trades are available to you. Go talk to them personally.

@@katerinakiriakakis1584 Sections really need to support the IC being evaluated. 21C needs to be johnny-on-the-spot with the ADDREPs. ALWAYS request transport IF it's available, because if you dont you WILL hike the 5km to the objective. Nav team needs to get cracking on the sandtable and time estimates. No mission is supposed to go according to plan, some curveballs will be thrown at you, so the most important thing to do is follow orders. The IC needs the teams to follow the orders, as the majority of his/her evaluation is on command and control, not necessarily tactics.
Destroy sandtables before launching any mission. I got docked marks because it could give the enemy valuable Intel in that hypothetical overrun of the FOB.
You wont be in BIVs, but you wont get any sleep. Count your blessings. The occasional 20 min nap can help, but not at the expense of the team. My section ended up rotating napping fireteam partners before every mission.
Actually figure out EVERY possible situation that could happen during rehearsals 10 min from mission launch. What happens if we get hit with arty? Suicide bomber? Enemy vehicles? Civvie vehicles? Prisoners? CBRN attack?
Have legit backup everything! Nav, medic, detention, etc. Appoint a 3IC in case they kill your 2IC.
Do NOT appoint backup sigs. IC is the backup sig.
White light allowed for search and rescue missions! You should be loud and visible in that situation, so keep that in mind.
Come up with codewords for VCPs. For us, if weapon was found: "Artemis", if explosive: "Zeus"
Dont be too mean to the actors playing Eastland/Westlanders. We had a OCdt literally body slam a guy when we called "Artemis"

It all depends on makeup of the unit you're in. Some do and some don't.
Got my test coming up in 2 weeks, how long after you write that first test does the next step happen? physical is done same day too? medical? once you are done all of them is it a long wait to basic? Or does that depend on when I sign the contract?
go to the canadianforces reddit page. from what ive read, youre put in a pool of applicants and the wait is indefinite and depends on how in demand your trade is, how well you did on your testing. im applying for the reserves and basically i did my fitness testing and a bunch of paper work one day and a week after i did my health, aptitude test and interview on the same day. If you get the interview, you know you passed your aptitude test. The math portion is CRITICAL for this as if you fail it, you fail everything. i was dumb and didnt do my research and could have done much better if i knew there was a Canadian forces aptitude test APP in the app store but i passed anyway (thank god for my engineering background) and got the interview. Another great tip is when your doing the math portion and you feel thatcertain questions will take longer then time allowed, just circle in a question and mark something to the side so you can move on and try other questions while not worrying about guessing on that other question, i left 7 blank instead of just guessing cause time goes by fast
Depending on your trade if it's on high demand it might be a few weeks or months. If it's not then it'll take longer.

What is TRP?
TRP : Training and Reintegration Program. This is platoon is divided in three; we have the P1, P2 and P3. Those who have a P1 patch are the people who have been injured during training; they are in TRP to heal (but they also physically train). The P2 are for the people who fail the ‘Force test’ in the first week of training, they are in TRP to train with the purpose to pass the test. And the P3 are for the people who are declared heal by the doctor and the people who have pass the force test. The P3 mean that they are ready to go back on platoon.
