A Day In The Life of a Postmates Bike Messenger

- I use Postmates 'Get It Now' delivery service every couple of weeks to order lunch when I'm jonesing for some food that's not within walking distance or I have a limited amount of time in between meetings. I have much love for the PostMates couriers who bring me things that I wouldn't have gone out and gotten for myself. So when they asked if I wanted to spend an afternoon as a courier myself, of course I jumped at the opportunity. TechCrunch writer Ryan Lawler spends the day working as a bike courier for San Francisco startup Postmates.

This video is a few years old when PM was very new and I can update what it's like to ride a bike for Postmates. I work mainly in the Palo Alto but have been as far north as Redwood City and as far south as Sunnyvale.
1. You're not going to get a one on one orientation. It is in a group. There were about ten other people in my orientation and three of them that week although I had to wait about three weeks fore the orientation and another five days or so after that as they did a background check. They seem to add people at a slower rate than their main competitor, I'll just call them "Floor Crash".
2. That annoying tone on the app is gone now. It's got a bit more of a Buddhist chime thing going but still gets your attention.
3. You don't do test jobs. You just go out and learn on the job. Support is good and they'll help you out if you contact them on your app under the help button (which also allows you to call or text customers with questions or updates).
4. There was some problem with Postmates phoning in the order to Sushirrito. They don't do phone orders. You always have to get in line there. The line in Palo Alto isn't as bad as that SF line but it can be a long wait. I get a lot of Sushirrito orders because, and this is an educated guess, lots of delivery people skip on Sushirrito because it takes too much time and cuts into your earnings. That is the exception, every other restaurant starts making your order while you're out delivering the previous job and so there's no waiting. This video makes it look like you spend a lot of time standing in line when you really don't now...unless you keep taking Sushirrito jobs (and Sushirrito has no line on rainy days in Palo Alto I've noticed).
5. The guy is using a messenger bag. That is really not very good. You'll notice his trainer has a basket on his bike. I use a big basket on the back mounted on a rack and a smaller one up front. Bungee cargo nets you can buy on Amazon are awesome for holding stuff down. I tried a messenger bag at first, basically because I wanted to pretend I had a bit role in Premium Rush, and it is no use for pizza and lots of other foods you don't want at an angle. Messenger bags are for messages. I would love to have seen this guy get a big order from Philz or Starbucks. He'd have been in huge trouble. I hold coffee in one hand on a tray, its the only way you can prevent it from spilling. Train tracks and potholes are horrible if you try to keep them in a basket.
6. Customers can see you (either as a car or bike icon) on their apps, like Uber. It helps them anticipate when you will be arriving so some of them will be hanging around outside waiting for you. They'll also know when you're being an idiot riding around in circles trying to find their address. Stanford campus can really give me nightmares as far as finding places although I'm learning.
7. This guy is wearing jeans and a cotton shirt. If you're going to do a lot of deliveries on a bike I highly recommend something a bit more sporty because you're going to sweat. Maybe in SF its cooler and you don't have to ride as far as Palo Alto but I'd be dying wearing what he's wearing. Go with moisture wicking fabric all the way.
8. During lunch and dinner rush, and other hours when they're low on delivery people, they'll activate "Blitz Pricing". You can make 20 bucks an hour fairly consistently when that's going on, maybe more like 12 or 15 otherwise. Tips sometimes take a long time to show up (some customers don't bother to answer any PM stuff on their phones once they get their order? PM takes a while to figure out the percentage because they have to view the receipt first? I really don't know).
9. You don't have customers sign anything on your phone. You get an itemized receipt from the store after you pay with a special PM debit card that you take a picture of, enter the total amount and send in.
10. It's not just restaurants. I've bought cigarettes at a tobacco store, all sorts of stuff from grocery stores, cat toys from Petco, chargers from the Apple store, you never know what will come up.
I really enjoy it. I ride for a competitor also and they both have their pluses and minuses but I'm the type of guy who's just happy to get paid for riding a bike around. One really cool thing about Postmates is you can just hop on and deliver anywhere PM operates. I'm definitely going to take my bike up to SF some weekend and try it out up there. I can really tell I'm rounding into better cycling shape and hopefully that will show up in some of the results of some races I do on my road bike.

Yeh and one thing I was thinking is doing this in a metro area in a vehicle could be crazy from one stand point. PARKING, unlike a bike you can lock to something and go, a car has to be parked and in Seattle I am sure you have to pay which does not make it cost effect. Even if you drove into the city and parked your paying a lot for it. I dont know if they do deliveries outside of the Seattle/ Bellevue area, but it would be nice if they did. I just signed up, but not sure if it will work for me or not for extra money. I will not quit my day job. ;-)
David Pearl - When Postmates was new I asked about the Los Angeles area and they did not 'offer' bicycle jobs in that area at that time. Do you feel like they make bicycling an equal player or are other modes higher on priority? Just curious to see if things have changed in that regard.
David i live in the palo alto area too and i was wondering if you have to be 18+ to work for them. I only have 2 months till im 18 so do i have to wait?
And now they don't do orientations, or test jobs or anything. It's literally just sign up, and you get in. lol
I'm a delivery guy and from my experience comes this story of a delivery that I made in Williamsburg, Saturday night. It was some where near the factories . I knocked the door and this guy opened it. I told him the price and he opened the door wide telling me to put the package on the table. I walked in and placed it on the counter and saw, way to many blow up dolls sitting at each seat at the dinner table. He gave me a fifty and said keep the change. It was a 23 dollar tip so i left the place with out a word.

It was the most difficult decision I ever made to leave that pizza on the table outside the front door :(
working both as a delivery driver and previously as a cabbie; sometimes you have customers with disabilities that need help, it can be sketchy and typically is pretty scary but I still do it.

Dymez187 its not worth it. I did postmates in a car and did probably 20 dropoffs and only got tipped 2 times. Even delivered in the rich parts of town and they dont tip. I made like 6-9$ per delivery depending on distance and wait time. I could probably get like 2 or 3 deliveries an hour. Its enough to pay for the gas you use driving around and that its lol. Its a rip off especially since people dont tip

Uber is 100x better. U don't have to wait in lines or even order for the customer. You get to the place and pick up the order and ur gone. Pick up and go and deliver easy. In a few trips I've made 50 to 60 bucks, plus uber gives incentives on top.

Gotta say that cellphone battery drains when the app is running !!! Overall its a good side gig you can jump into anytime. The beauty of the bike is even though I never tried it - you don't have to worry about parking
I want to talk about my bad experiences delivering with gig companies, mostly occuring my first year doing food deliveries in 2018. First off i had it all wrong with the bike setup and how to carry food to customers. The worst idea was to carry a cardboard box bungiecorded to a rearpannier rack. One of my biggest disasters with the box was adelivery, in which it fell off my bike with food inside! Since I don't touch food I had to give a customer a bag with exploded food inside, thankfully it was only bare chicken wings, could you imagine if it was lasagna?! I didn't distance myself from the box for several months though, and did unfortunately have an explosion of stacked Mexican food in styrofoam after hitting a speed bump.
Then I had some bad flat tire experiences. One of them happened while delivering an expensive Thai dinner. The meal hadtve been over fifty bucks. So I'm not even a quarter of the way into my delivery, and I get two flat tires after cycling into a road construction area, so I had to walk my bike all the way back to the restaurant and tell them I couldn't complete the delivery. I wonder if customer even got the order, probably got the refund. Thankfully that time I had money for a taxi, but an episode a month earlier while on my way to a delivery in the same area, basically stranded me many miles away from home, since I didn't have a tire lever! So on this earlier episode I'm on a sidewalk for an hour or so and a person helps me out by lending a flathead screwdriver to pop open the tire. This doesn't work, so, since the busses were all done for the day, I figure I'm going to have to walk a bike 11 miles or so back home, but then I find the tire lever in a hidden pocket of my backpack, and am able to air the tire and get myself home slowly, since the tire keeps going flat after a mile of riding. It was a big hassle, but not as bad as walking a bike. During this time they would send me out on deliveries clear out to Riggs Road, and I live in Mesa, a bigwhopping marathon run distance. It was wonderful exercise, but for the money, not worth it. It would take me 2 hours some days to ride back home on my bike after deliveries.
Then there was the time I got the bad idea to perform orders on two opposing delivery platforms at once. I remember this one night of running side orders, since I was racing my heart out to finish deliveries, but as I passed an accepted delivery opportunity closerby, for one a little farther away on another platform, I found, when picking up the delivery, the customer resided even farther in the opposite direction. So I'm hustling quick to get the delivery done, so I can finish the other one, which is now far away and already 40 minutes old, and I pedal quick for it. Still , when I get the order, two hours have already gone by as I give it to a disgruntled customer. The lesson I learned from this trouble: don't accept orders from different delivery platforms, just focus on one platform per day, or you'll run into the running late delivery problem.
This wasn't even the worst of my experiences. By far my very first delivery with a gig economy platform ranks as probably one of my worst ever! So I ride to a fast-food joint to get an order and find out the card the company gave me doesn't work at the register, so I try calling the company, but they don't have a support line to help out with ongoing orders, so I'm stuck. Then a nice lady actually came up and paid for my customers order, so I wait, and take the order to the customer who resides 6-7 miles away from the restaurant. I get to the customers house and they tell me I'm missing an item. So I ride all the way back to the restaurant, 7 miles away, pick up the item and pedal quick back to the customer, but on my way back my bike suffers a flat tire a mile away from customers residence, so seeing im not too far away I ditch the bike and run the final mile to the customer with last item. For one order, that lasted almost 2 hours, I cycled 21 miles, and made 8 bucks! 😂
The weather can also throw punches out there while you're delivering. My worst experience would have to be a pizza delivery I went on, and as soon as I left the restaurant, I got hit by a torrential downpour, I mean waterfall cascading down on me from the clouds. I cycled two and a half miles to the customer through the crazy rain, the pizza, which I thought protected inside my food bag, got wet! I think the actual pizza inside the box also got wet as well, the water having soaked through the cloth and heavy plastic lining of my bag to soil it. I know I didn't get a tip for that order, and the customer had been the only nontipper of the day! My cell phone got almost ruined by the moisture from water droplets and it made my GPS nearly inoperable, the phone kept closing and reopening the guidance program and caused me a lot of troubles, until I got to the address, and of course the rain stopped when I reached the house! Lol. The wind can also throw an anchor against you and I try not to go out on deliveries if the wind is over 15mph, since it really can zap away all your power reserves and cause you to grind on the pedals.
Now though despite all my troubles, I've gotten good at cycling deliveries and can make 20-40 an hour. Experience only leads to better in this job, but the bad, is alot of times too much for many to cope with so they quit.

he's such a noob haha.I'm messenger for PM, it's good money on the side, but currently I make minimum wage. It's not bad, keep a level head on the job, accept the next job as your dropping off the last one, and over time you'll how to avoid sushirito at peak hours. I ride for two companies, good exercise, I'm fast, and I make enough money for myself. The big thing is actually not use a messenger bag, i use a big back pack, I've seen a pile of people use racks. If you work in SF, get some gears. Some guys use roadies, some guys use hybrids, whatever floats your boat.
If I had one piece of advice, I'd say take your time. It's dangerous to ride fast and you won't save that much time. Slow down, and stay safe.

I hardly ever carry food.. but not to long ago on the way back home from a ride i stopped at a local pizza joint and carried two large pizzas in my bag.. i was worried they would shift into one big pile of cheese & sauce.. but actually when i got home they were perfectly intact. I think its bc while riding they rested in a normal position on my back, they werent vertical very long.. lol.

Where do you begin your delivery?
I worked for them for one month, but they fired me when my ratings dropped to 4 out of 5 stars. Here's what you have to know before you start:
1. DO NOT accept CASH ORDERS. When Postmates reimburses you, the IRS will tax it as earned income.
2. If you have to run to the ATM to withdraw money for a cash order, the ATM fees will not be reimbursed.
3. Make sure the order will fit in your bag.
4. The Postmates app drains the battery. I had to recharge it at Kinko's every 1.5 hours.
5. Write down the customer address/number when you get it. if the battery dies, you won't know where to go.

Hi: For as long as I have been riding my bike, I have a question . . . not related to messenger but to bikes. I always seem to have a lean to the right side. When I was younger, I thought it was because I was riding used bikes and the bikes had a lean. But, it is clear it is me because no matter what bike I ride, I lean to the right. And when I ride no hands, I have to lean my upper body to the left to balance. What is that about? Are you perfectly centered on your bike? Thx. what am I doing wrong? What can I do to correct it? Do I have to amputate my left leg to balance? What is wrong with me? thx.

If you can't ride a bike in traffic and talk on the phone at the same time you probably shouldn't be a courier. Having one hand occupied should be no issue...

I just realized at 0:50 , this app used to tell you where the dropoff location was before accepting the job. Now in 2015, it doesn't tell you where you are dropping off the food to. It annoys the shit out of me since some jobs require you to travel over several miles via a freeway just to drop off someones deli sandwich....The pay for some long trips isn't worth it.

He's making 1986 money which is fine if your rent is $250 a month. Normal messenger work involves picking up several items before delivery the first item. This is really not messenger work, you are a food runner on a bicycle risking your life for someone's lunch while not being compensated for standing in line. If you get seriously injured your rate of compensation will be based on a very low level of pay. In the race to the bottom this seems to be the leader.

2020 update: no orientation you get accepted same day and the beep has been replaced with this really stupid slow chime.
When I was messing we used to make money delivering legal documents, blue prints, ad proofs, etc. And we got waaaay more tags than one thing at a time. I guess the industry really has tanked. Delivering food always sucked on a bike too.

One hand it, use a front rack, a trailer if the order is big enough. Personally I prefer using a rack over anything else.

I think that it's much better to use your vehicle to do courier deliveries. I made as much as $1350 a week as a independent courier driver.
That's true but you also have to worry about gas and miles to oppose with a bike all you have to do is move through traffic.

I don't work weekends at all! I do all of my hustlin during the week. I get paid 62% per stop.
Me personaley I hate postmates it is a big investment scam I left them for Washington Express. With postmates you get NO BENEFITS NONE WHAT SO EVER. My opion I'm not no one slave people can go out and get there own food that is just lazy. If you freaking fall and bus your head open tough luck. Postmates is the worst company in the this entire world. With the company I am with I make a 100 dollars a day so yeah. Fuck postmates.
