As a Deliveroo rider, I can say one of the most important things is not risking a really expensive bike being nicked! And flat bars are better suited than road bars.
That's a fact! Which is why I decided to get a bullshit but not so bullshit frankenstein fixie bike (it has some really good name brands and would look amazing if the owner had care for it). So we're doing all the works lol, to cleaning, sanding, lubing, change of colors, cutting the bars, new tyres/chain/Sattle and I'll be like new!😊👌
1. Dependability. Being able to fix and replace parts quickly and cheaply is key. The city bike was nice but that treaded drive system and the one piece proprietary stem/bars will have you out of commission after one incident. 2. Weather. Riding in the snow all day on a Canyon Aero with no clearance for CX Pro's and fenders? No thx. 3. Position. Do you really expect us to believe that you took someone's pizzas and put them on your back whilst riding in that terribly aggressive position?? ahahahaha. City bike wins here. With all the stop and go of traffic, you'll rarely reach speeds where aero matters for long enough to notice a difference. 4. "Lockability". Sleek satin paint and carbon wheelsets will scratch and crack after all the damage your lock will do over the course of only a few months. In this line of work, it isn't always the fastest who earns the most, it's the fastest on average. Hitting 45km/h+ but succumbing to constant flats because of your paper thin ultralightweight tires or having your incredibly delicate 11spd chain snap after all the wear and tear will put you at a disadvantage vs the guy with the more humble, utilitarian setup.
I work for Deliveroo in London, just to say I guarantee with the angle of those bags on your back (which were almost at 90 degrees) the food would have either spilled in the curries case or the pizza would have slid down to a mush at the bottom of the box. Would highly recommend the attachable box for the rear of the bicycle. Also I ride a road bike and find it to be really good for my area, although it is not as expensive as your one. Felt like there was a bit of product placement but who cares, I enjoy GCN's videos a lot!! Keep the videos coming, maybe do an UBER eats comparison?

As a courier for several years here in Toronto Canada I can tell you from experience that a mountain bike with road slicks and a rack is one of the best ways to go for working in this job. I also know others who swear by riding fixed gears with cut down bars. But as I have learned for many more experienced than me having gears is a must if you want to do this job long term; also having the proper clothing and repair kit is a must as well as a good quality lock( 1 bike stolen on job)
Great video, loving how the editing makes the routes look like complete nonsense for us Bristolians :) I did see a GCN deliveroo the other day on Whiteladies, had no idea it might have been one of you guys!
First delivery & a kid is sporting a WB shirt!?!? What a coincidence! :O :) Then Si asking if the guy wanted a selfie ...the dude's look was hilarious. :D!!! Great video!!
I might be saying what many have already said or thinking, but in the courrier world food delivery guys are not really seen as messengers. There is definitely a hierarchy and any seasoned courrier/messenger would sneer at the idea or putting any kind of food in their bag (except for their own lunch). As for Delivroo, Uber eats, etc; their business models are very questionable vis-à-vis treatment of their workers and the legality of their operations in some countries. Great video in any case. Thanks guys
I don't care, if other messengers look down on me or think, they are better than me, just because they don't deliver food. I moonlight for Foodora and wouldn't be able to work a "real" messenger job at these hours. I like the job, I get some extra exercise and I like exploring the city or finding the best/quickest route. The customers are happy and my employer is happy, because I am fast and do more deliveries per hour or shift than the average rider. I am also a road cyclist and I would take the challenge from all the first class messengers anytime.
Provided I could get mor cardio in my bike rides, instead of just learning how to wheelie and bunny hop, I do believe bike courier could be a great job for me (Not just to entertain the fantasy of making a life out of a bike at my age). Great video, GCN! CHEERS!
Hi Simon of GCN. When would you ride a cyclocross bike versus say a hard tail mountain bike for your daily "go to" bike? That Trek Crockett looks absolutely stunning. Cheers.
Should have given us the stats at the end of the day for abit of a laugh... how far u went, how much u earned? And how many calories burnt or somit.. but good vid.. I'd love to try it being in London but too vain and think I'd look too much of a tit wearing that massive Deliveroo backpack
I hope there was plenty of good footage obtained for the next GCN Bloopers video! ? This little adventure seems like it would be a perfect setup for many oops :D
As a cycle courier I am not impressed by the product placement for shitty Deliveroo, As for what bike to use as a cycle courier its based on cost of maintaining the bike which is why cycle couriers often using single speed bikes.
Hi Dean, Thanks for the comment, however, we can’t speak for Deliveroo - but we enjoyed putting our cycle courier skills to the test in a busy day of filming. We met many riders while we were out on the streets of Bristol and the majority of the feedback was positive. They loved the flexibility in choosing their hours, the variety in the job and the fact it kept them fit. For some it fitted well around their other commitments too. Thanks, GCN
I work deliveroo in bristol - we have a LOT of hills I average 900ft elevation in 3-4 hours I'd love the simplicity of single speed but its just punishment when working 5+ hours at a time
Dean Porter bro, I've been using the same derailleur system for more than a year and the only thing I replaced was the chain. If you know how to fix your shit it won't cost a penny. Maybe 3 euro for a multi tool. Using singlespeed for work is retarded in my opinion. Not efficient, fucks up your knees long term, and it's more fashion then anything else.
Megadeth6633 in London I disagree, it's not as hilly as Bristol so if single speed and fixed gear are different, with single speed you can freewheel whereby fixed us where you are likely to have knee issues in long term use of fixed gear use
I'm very happy that you guys did a segment or a video of Bike messaging. I worked into cities in the US Seattle Washington and San Francisco California. Two of the most Hills cities in the US. And these two cities you have to have clips on your petals. The guy with the town Bike won't survive a shift in San Francisco or Seattle. In my opinion I have over six years of experience. Work in the cities with Bike. The cyclocross bike The best option. But the Bike wasted a lot of space you could put a front rack on that bike and Save your back. But my main bike I used to go to work is a track bike because it's easy to maintain. And the gear ratio on my bike is a 19 in the back and in the Front I use a 26 gear ratio. You could go fast and you could climb up the steep hills fast. If I had alarm morning view the bikes I will use. I will use use cyclocross bike A town bike or a mountain bike what has flat bars to put on A front flat rack.
Sorry my Rant is not over yet. In conclusion I want to say that I'm going up hills with 15 salad Salads and your back that's when you switch with Bike when I rack. A lot of people do this in the industry. One week that we use our fast bike carry everything in their back the next week you use your bike with the rack to give your back arrest. And when both of those bikes are broken. You use your track bike because it's easy to maintain. And I might rant. Thank you to everybody. I feel that my job is taking seriously now. Very hard work very dangerous. Thank you for putting our spot on my industry very appreciated.
Flat bar road bikes are ultimate when it comes to city riding. I bought a Diamond back insight 1 and I modified I put a whole new campanolo drive train with a standard crank and news wheels on it and I slammed the stem and put clipless pedals, and wider handlebars with barends and 32mm 4 seasons tire. This mad the bike just as fast a budget road bike but way more nimble and it can handle rough roads ( which is what you really want that and speed of course.)
I’m a bike courier we make about 20$ an hour In Houston ( very small community relative to LA or NY) and that’s one day of work bud. Don’t have to be a doctor to have a nice bike for 50 hours of cycling a week
As a Cyclist living in Bristol, I despise Deliveroo riders. They forever cut red lights and jump onto pavements. That said, good video - I'd go for the crossbike I think
hi Nick, thanks for the message We don’t and can't speak for Deliveroo - but we enjoyed putting our cycle courier skills to the test in a busy day of filming. Hope to see you out riding some day. thanks, the GCN team!
I don't work for Deliveroo but I do jump red lights and jump onto pavements at every opportunity, its called "trying to stay alive", do u actually ride a bike?
I work for jinn cycle couriers, I use my rigid mountain bike because a cup drink in your bag would empty instantly on a road bike. The bag angle is everything!
OK, so i'm just gonna keep commenting as this video goes along here... just ignore me. Dan, the skinny jeans are most assuredly -not- looking good with the pockets filled... they look like those WWII pants that the German and Italian officers used to wear - puffed out at the top, lol. What an unfortunate way to earn a new nickname, 'mussolini.' But that bike was nearly perfect (probably with Speedplay Frogs and easy-to-walk-in shoes it would be perfect)
Matt's technique seems to work for older pizza slices. A fresh pizza pie would have had all the toppings and cheese slide at that angle. Matt has a nice bike, but is only a second-rate (hopefully lower-cost) old-pizza delivery rider. (And now I'm wondering if that's just the way pizza is sold for take-out over there on the island. We buy pizzas by the fresh, gooey pie here in yank land.)
If you want to find out the best, or preferred, type of bike for a cycle courier you should take a trip to the European Cycle Messenger Championships in Vienna next week. The world champs are in Montreal in August this year, so depending on your budget.
It's definitely between the cyclocross bike or the town bike for me. It relay depends on where your riding and how secure the place is that your locking it. I do a fair bit of commuting through town and I end up on my old mountain bike with a pair of slicks but could relay do with a pair of clipless pedals for the climbs.
Global Cycling Network Haha I'm an ambassador and been deliverying for them since 2 years in Paris now, and I really want to know how Matt did delivered his pizza in such a good shape with that position haha 😀. I've used multiple bikes for the job (almost 15 000km with fixed gear but also cyclo-cross but my favorite is road bike with 28mm gatorskin and a front rack 😁. Really enjoyed the video !
+Hope J That's because it wasn't a full pizza, it was just a slice in a small box. I know the rest of the food was a mess considering it was at a 90 degree angle.
They would look awesome! With U-lock hip pouches and cargo shorts/trousers, they'd fit right in with the fixed gear courier scene ;) and don't get me started on skidding down those hills!
Good job boys! I ride with my specialized diverge for deliveroo. I chose a gravel bike cause it's comfy and still fast. I did 8000 kilometers from January to mid April in that job in the streets of Berlin,Germany. I reckon for the most courier riders that bike would be to expensive. Did u know that there is an adjustment inside of the bag that stabilizes the food when u go in a more aero position? That's why road bikes in general aren't a bad choice for the job. See u on the roads. But now on the ones in Adelaide!! :)
Big fan of the channel here, and of course I understand that you need to make money, but it is disappointing to see that a company like Deliveroo is getting this much space here. If you ever speak to bike couriers, or indeed read some of the online reviews, it is pretty clear that they are one of the least popular employers in the business for a reason.
+Lars Rehm thanks for the message. We don’t speak for Deliveroo - but we enjoyed putting our cycle courier skills to the test in a busy day of filming. Lars Rehm to be clear. We spoke to lots of riders who say they love working for Deliveroo - it was a good way for us to look at one of the ways bikes are being put to use.
I work for deliveroo in Edinburgh using a cross bike and I think it's great. most nights I'm making upwards of £10 per hour and the flexibility is great. the only down side is that we are technically self employed. PS if your thinking about working for deliveroo up here's my rooferal code you'll get £50 if you use it. - roo.it/MI50625
Can't be any worse than my local deliveroo lot: riding on the paths, running red lights, swerving everywhere, hopping curbs, no lights in the dark, the wrong side of the road. And that's just last week. Considering they're technically professional cyclists (in that it's their job) they aren't flying the flag for cyclists well.

Global Cycling Network Hey, not dissing deliveroo, this was a good video and I hope it helps some viewers find good employment. I know some riders who are great and get just as annoyed as I do by the poor conduct of some of their riders. Definitely admire the hustle of those who do it properly and put in the work without putting others in danger or riding like a cock. It's a shame that the minority of cocks is still out there though.
Samuel Mumby stop expecting cyclist to ride like car drivers this country needs new road legislation to take into account that cyclists are a) as vulnerable as pedestrians and b) as harmful to others as pedestrians, so why they are classified as "carriages" just because they use the same road as cars is a mystery to me. Other counties show how it should be done, a car breaking the rule puts the life of others in serious danger and still everybody speeds, a bike jumping a red light or escaping traffic onto the pavement because cycling infrastructure is not sufficient is doing no harm to anyone / at most endangering himself. And don't start citing the one incident where a person was run over on the pavement by a cyclist do you know home many people are being knocked over by other pedestrians and die every year? Get your statistics right!
iBot1978 The simple fact is, whether riding on the road in a vehicular manner or like however you think cyclists should behave they definitely should not be riding dangerous and putting anyone at risk. I've had to pull my son out of the way of a deliver rider before because they hopped on a path, didn't slow and weren't looking. This is unacceptable. Yes there should be better legislation and infrastructure but for the time being cyclists should focus on obeying what laws apply and (most importantly) not riding like cocks.
I used to live in bristol 5 years ago and i had a bike. cycling in bristol was challenging because you almost can't escape the hill! those hills are quite steep too
Okay 1, 80% bike messengers can't even afford a bicycle that you guys ride, even the grey one , it's still really expensive. 2, the way you guys riding with that bag really tight to your body, gonna make the food messed up.
Dan was playing the hipster roll very well, although he pulled a rookie mistake. He left the safety tab on his front rotor!!! Might as well left the reflectors and size sticker on also!
you guys advertising deliveroo is sad. people are striking everywhere, get fired for speaking up and not paid wjat hey worked for. deliveroo would let you die in the streets, they dont care for you. i had to drag them to court for they still owe me money. they will pay you less or wrong on a regular basis, and you have to complain and keep close tabs on the amount of work youve put in, always run after your money. here in germany we have so much shit going on. while they dont even supply jackets or lights. if you care for fellow messengers, dont support deliveroo. i get that working on your bike is fun, but there are better employers. dont work there, dont order there, and pls, dont advertise for them :(

the one thing i never could wrap my head around was how the delivery bags and attire were purchases rather then standard uniform. so you actually had to pay them money before even earning any to begin with. kinda sneaky to be frank.
finalbattle777 You get the starter equipement for free, I got my backpack, windproof jacket and thermal bag for free. You don't really need to pay to start earning.
"Think of the curry. Think of the curry" lmfaoo😂😂😂 That's definitely going to be in the back of my mind when I'm out riding my fixie, because these NYC streets are horrendously packed with traffic and the short cuts have horrible pavement. Hopefully this uber eats gig with be fun as these guys lol.
Oh dear, you've obviously been paid by Deliveroo to make this RECRUITMENT ADVERT. Deliveroo underpays there staff, they earn less then minimum wage and work extremley hard for their money. They are currently facing law suits regarding this matter of modern day slavery. Disappointed that GCN is endorsing Deliveroo. #Slaveroo
Depends on the situation I'd say, some might be struggling but as a deliveroo rider myself, I'm making 10-15£ per hour which is more than any other job I've had before now. Pretty good for a student I'd say
Let us know if you think Dan, Simon and Matt should be full time couriers 👇
Only if I can replace them as GCN presenter.
Well, only Dan did not get fired (read your contracts guys). Wellcome to the club Dan !
Cl3verify
The contract doesn't actually enforce the uniform, just the trainers and bosses always say to. We have people wearing all sorts where I work
Global Cycling Network How many deliveries did they make each??? 🤔
It must be a city by city thing in this case. In Lyon (France), they are legally forced to wear the brand and they can get "fire" otherwise.

First delivery & a kid is sporting a WB shirt!?!? What a coincidence! :O :)
Then Si asking if the guy wanted a selfie ...the dude's look was hilarious.
Yet another reason to love GCN. Great video lads.
how much did you get paid for the deliveries?
10p per delivery
@@BlazingBigJointz no, right?
Usually £4 but they do incentive shifts where that can £5,6,7,8 per delivery.... Can earn old long onbusy shifts
Provided I could get mor cardio in my bike rides, instead of just learning how to wheelie and bunny hop, I do believe bike courier could be a great job for me (Not just to entertain the fantasy of making a life out of a bike at my age). Great video, GCN! CHEERS!
also you should of adjusted those bags properly so the food is always horizontal, just be thankful it isn't your actual job.
should've / should have*
I used to ride for deliveroo, it’s an actual impossibility for the bags to be horizontal and comfortable for a long period of time
I bet with a bike rack you can keep em horizontal
Here comes your hot dough with a side of Cheese and Ham and Sauce.
Forever Computing xD
Matt is hilarious, gotta love his customer service. I couldn’t think of anyone better to receive my food from than hum
Hi Simon of GCN. When would you ride a cyclocross bike versus say a hard tail mountain bike for your daily "go to" bike? That Trek Crockett looks absolutely stunning. Cheers.
With GCN drifting from training to entertaining, this one is really good.
Cross bike is the best for the job shown.
Should have given us the stats at the end of the day for abit of a laugh... how far u went, how much u earned? And how many calories burnt or somit..
but good vid.. I'd love to try it being in London but too vain and think I'd look too much of a tit wearing that massive Deliveroo backpack
Crazy Life : I've see deliveroo riders using boxes clipped to the back of bicycles. Maybe give that a go...
+Crazy Life more like how many wrong turns they made :-)
Colin Pettit need to swallow my pride 😜... but would look strange on a full carbon jobie :)
Crazy Life : True...
I hope there was plenty of good footage obtained for the next GCN Bloopers video! ? This little adventure seems like it would be a perfect setup for many oops :D
Still my favorite video after all these years!
As a cycle courier I am not impressed by the product placement for shitty Deliveroo, As for what bike to use as a cycle courier its based on cost of maintaining the bike which is why cycle couriers often using single speed bikes.
Hi Dean,
Thanks for the comment, however, we can’t speak for Deliveroo - but we enjoyed putting our cycle courier skills to the test in a busy day of filming. We met many riders while we were out on the streets of Bristol and the majority of the feedback was positive. They loved the flexibility in choosing their hours, the variety in the job and the fact it kept them fit. For some it fitted well around their other commitments too.
Thanks, GCN
I work deliveroo in bristol - we have a LOT of hills I average 900ft elevation in 3-4 hours I'd love the simplicity of single speed but its just punishment when working 5+ hours at a time
that being said a lot of the more expierienced riders do run singlespeed/fixed for the extra challenge...nutters. :p
One of the most entertaining videos you've done in a long time. Congrats boys.
I will use use cyclocross bike A town bike or a mountain bike what has flat bars to put on A front flat rack.
cheers for the feedback!
How many deliveries before you've earned back these fancy bikes? Think about that...
JVV I don’t wanna think about that 😂
Well done GCN for providing free advertising to a company that exploits its workforce wherever it emerges.
Nice video guys, but I find it highly unlikely that people who work for Deliveroo for extra cash can easily afford £2000+ bikes
I’m a bike courier we make about 20$ an hour In Houston ( very small community relative to LA or NY) and that’s one day of work bud. Don’t have to be a doctor to have a nice bike for 50 hours of cycling a week
They should do this sort of stuff more often. It's like top gear but with bikes instead of cars!
As a Cyclist living in Bristol, I despise Deliveroo riders. They forever cut red lights and jump onto pavements.
That said, good video - I'd go for the crossbike I think
hi Nick,
thanks for the message
We don’t and can't speak for Deliveroo - but we enjoyed putting our cycle courier skills to the test in a busy day of filming.
Hope to see you out riding some day.
thanks, the GCN team!
I don't work for Deliveroo but I do jump red lights and jump onto pavements at every opportunity, its called "trying to stay alive", do u actually ride a bike?
Great video! Looking forward to seeing the next challenge.
Brakeless track bikes!
where? Not on our show!
Only for those who have a death wish.
I work for jinn cycle couriers, I use my rigid mountain bike because a cup drink in your bag would empty instantly on a road bike. The bag angle is everything!
Holy cow - is that Dan's flat, or the GCN headquarters? What a view.
I don't believe pizza pies are very widespread outside of murica
If you want to find out the best, or preferred, type of bike for a cycle courier you should take a trip to the European Cycle Messenger Championships in Vienna next week. The world champs are in Montreal in August this year, so depending on your budget.
"do you want a selfie?" LMAO
It's definitely between the cyclocross bike or the town bike for me. It relay depends on where your riding and how secure the place is that your locking it. I do a fair bit of commuting through town and I end up on my old mountain bike with a pair of slicks but could relay do with a pair of clipless pedals for the climbs.
How did the food not come out a mess???🤔
skills!
Smooth pedaling, steady core, relaxed shoulders. GCN class!
Matt must just be a very good pizza boy!
+Hope J That's because it wasn't a full pizza, it was just a slice in a small box. I know the rest of the food was a mess considering it was at a 90 degree angle.
this is my fav gcn video in quite some time
the problem riding such flash bikes in the city is how to lock them safely?!
Lock the the frame with the two wheels.
“So... do you want a selfie or anything?” 🙄😂 I cringed
Why didn't you guys use fixed gear bikes?? Squandered opportunity.
Can you imagine our boys on fixed wheel?!
They would look awesome! With U-lock hip pouches and cargo shorts/trousers, they'd fit right in with the fixed gear courier scene ;) and don't get me started on skidding down those hills!
yeah exactly ! they should have tried a fixed !
Something tells me they can't ride fixed! Such a missed audience.
Not sure if you know Bristol but trust me with these hills you wouldn't want a fixie!
Great guys. More of this type of challenge and you could be the TopGear/GrandTour of the bike world!
what is a catso chicken curry? doesn't sound that great to be honest! too many furballs. id much prefer a katsu!
Customers are NOT that happy to see me.
Spit out coffee when Dan was adjusting his knackers hahahah
Riding with jeans jumbles mine too lol
Big fan of the channel here, and of course I understand that you need to make money, but it is disappointing to see that a company like Deliveroo is getting this much space here. If you ever speak to bike couriers, or indeed read some of the online reviews, it is pretty clear that they are one of the least popular employers in the business for a reason.
+Lars Rehm thanks for the message.

thanks for posting your boiler plate response under my comment , too ;)
Lars Rehm to be clear. We spoke to lots of riders who say they love working for Deliveroo - it was a good way for us to look at one of the ways bikes are being put to use.
I work for Deliveroo in France (with a road bike btw) and I love it ;-)
I work for deliveroo in Edinburgh using a cross bike and I think it's great. most nights I'm making upwards of £10 per hour and the flexibility is great. the only down side is that we are technically self employed. PS if your thinking about working for deliveroo up here's my rooferal code you'll get £50 if you use it. - roo.it/MI50625
That guy's face after Si asked him if he wanted a selfie was priceless!
You needed to go full Fixie, come'on what kind of hipsters are you?
Can't believe how far I had to scroll for this
Now that's serious cycling. A bit like Texas Hill Country in the winter. Cheers!
Hi Samuel.
thanks for the comment,

Hey, not dissing deliveroo, this was a good video and I hope it helps some viewers find good employment.
It depends on how you pack the food, but the closer the box/bag is to you the less it moves around
I love gcn! it's like top gear in its good years but with bicycles .
Amateur....I didn't see there was a non revolving door. lol

Christian Morgenstern deliveroo pays me great. It litteraly pays me 4 or 5 times the money i made working in the grocery store
Did Deliveroo pay GCN for this? That's what people want to know.
"Think of the curry. Think of the curry" lmfaoo😂😂😂
That's definitely going to be in the back of my mind when I'm out riding my fixie, because these NYC streets are horrendously packed with traffic and the short cuts have horrible pavement. Hopefully this uber eats gig with be fun as these guys lol.
Simon's cringe moment right there...want a selfie? facepalm
yeah that was pretty painful.
This was alot of fun to watch! Thanks
finally
enjoy!
I will have to side with Si, the cyclo-cross bike does give you more options on routes to your deliveries....Great job guys
I work for them, average £10ph... Hmmm
Media talks shit. All us deliveroo man making bank.
i make 30 euro per hour here in munich haha whats wrong with u guys earning less then minimum wage
@@coolnesfreak media talks shit they make money but let people think what they want.
At 4:57 .. those pizza sure are going to be in great shape hahaha
