- Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time we bear witness to the end of an era. I grew up playing Xbox 360 and tons of Halo 3 and today marks the day those servers finally go offline among the various Halo titles of that era. Nothing lasts forever but it's always amazing to remember those times and look forward. Thanks for watching!

They knew. Rip Halo.
I still remember when the Starry Night trailer dropped and the hype train began in 2006. Halo 3 still has some of the best marketing for any video game, the post war style interviews with veterans talking about Master Chief, and then 'Believe'. There wasn't anything like this before, this was when gaming broke out into mainstream. I was twelve years old when the game dropped, I didn't have a 360 at the time so I had to go to my friends house to get my Halo 3 fix, and of course he had the only 360 on the block so it was common to show up and watch a few 3-4 player split screen matches on a tiny ass box tv before it was your turn. Great fucking times, and once I got my own 360 and a Live account, Halo 3 and CoD World at War were the usual two in the disk tray.
One of my favorite memories is my first coop legendary run, it was on a Friday after school, we just got back from the store with bags of doritos and Halo 3 mountain dew in hands and spent the whole fucking day playing Halo 3. We completely lost track of time, ended up getting stuck on The Ark, just before Miranda's freighter arrives and ended up spending the whole night getting our asses kicked at that checkpoint. Eventually we finally got passed that point only to notice the first sunlight creeping outside the window, so we called it quits there. I fucking love Halo 3, it'll always hold a special place in my heart.
I never had an OG Xbox, I was never a massive fan of the series, but GawdAMN I'm impressed by how dedicated of a fanbase the series has spawned.

even as someone who's never played halo 3 or any of them, but this does feel like the end of a massive era. halo 3 is a legendary game, and it's sad yet understandable why it's coming to an end.
god speed, halo 3.
Damn, Muta... this takes me back. I was a freshman in High school when this came out. I remember all the homies talking about how they were gonna fake being sick so they could skip school and play it all night and the next day. When everyone finally got back on Thursday or Friday (depending on their level of commitment lol) we were all talking about the game and how awesome it was. I missed out, unfortunately, as I didn't have a 360 by then. Luckily my parents hooked me up with one a week or two later with all the games a young, doe-eyed gamer could ever want.
This reminds me of all the midnight releases we had at our local GameStop too. It was the same crowd every time. We were there for Fallout 4, Skyrim, Farcry 4, etc. I miss those games. I miss those times. I miss those friends. Life has a funny way of moving forward; it seems so slow and monotonous when you're young. You can't wait to grow up and do all the cool things adults can do. When you're older it feels like you're always begging for just a few more minutes before you have to leave and white-knuckle your 2-hour commute to a job you hate.
Thanks for the nostalgia tears and melancholy-flavored lump in my throat.

I never got to witness the 'golden age of gaming'. I never got to play OG Halo 3. Heck, I first played Halo CE, my first 'actual' game aside from some small indie games on my PC (never had an Xbox) in 2011. But I got so hooked into CE that I was forever a fan.
I yearned for YEARS to play Halo 3 on my computer. So, when MCC was announced for PC, I was beyond the moon.
When I finally played Halo 3, I got to experience that joy first hand. And Immediately understood what all those people meant when they extolled the virtues and brilliance of Halo 3. Even if I didn't get the 'vanilla' Halo 3 experience, I can say from the main menu music alone in Halo 3 MCC that it is indeed special. An almost trance or heaven like experience. What a crescendo on which to lay to rest the original trilogy.
Out of all the Halo games (which are great in their own sense), I found Halo 3 to be the greatest. The gameplay, the scripting, the environments, the music, the gunplay, the balance of difficulties, the story. All of them blended and mixed so nicely, that even Halo Infinite just can't match. Maybe it's the 10 years of fine tuning. Maybe it's the juggernaut status it has in gaming. Maybe it's my own silly head. But Halo 3 genuinely transcends gaming and becomes an _art_ .
An expression.
A passion.
A _beauty to behold_ .
A Van Gogh of gaming.
_Sublime_ .
As Muta said, It's is a hallmark of its generation, and well deserving of the praise and love it still garners.
It is not just legendary.
It is _Mythic_ .
Not even watching, cause I will cry. But the memories that I hold playing this game at the sweet ages of 9-16 will stay with me forever. Appreciate you Muta, and the Halo community for making my life somewhat more bearable.

it's not even about graphics anymore, its about monetization. I doubt many people will remember this time fondly, every game is made expecting it to be your second job or to be disposable enough so that you quickly jump to the next game after you spend hundreds of dollars. If we want to have fond memories of gaming, we should push back against dlc, microtransactions, subscriptions and the new kid in town, nfts.
@@javierortiz82 I dont really mind DLCs at all but yea microtransactions and other stuff just suck but hey they’re corporations what can ya do
I found my Legendary Edition pre-order yesterday and back then they asked for a $10 deposit for the game to reserve a copy and that $10 would go towards the rest of the game's price when you pick it up. I was able to keep at least 2 playlists consistently running. Social Slayer was usually most populated, 7 on the 7th had enough, Rumble Pit and Action Sack is where I usually kept my systems. The remaining players could use the bots to finish those last achievements.
Yesterday I was sick all day, I kept tearing up every time I started to think about it, I had to put the game down, cuddle up with the fiance with the same pizza place I've been going to since Halo came out(which is in NY and fucking incredible) and watch Dinosaurs, the abomination she only now has discovered. Afterwards I went back downstairs, loaded back up and started playing, knowing I'll never do this again.
Joining lobbies with randoms or discord groups where we all started talking, many crying as they played what they knew was their last game.
Switching game to game as the servers quickly went down, trying to squeeze out every second of this possible. In the end, I'm left with a wealth of video essays of those who grew up as I did, love Halo as I do. I do have one struggle I know many of us share:
Those who didn't share these experiences who say things such as: "Can't you still play the new version?"
Yes we can. That's wonderful, but it doesn't stop the heartbreak. My best analogy is:
Imagine a childhood home that you've spent half your life in. You've moved out and into a home of the same style, even painting the walls the same. It's been 5 years and your parents are moving somewhere else in a week. You can visit any time, seeing every little detail your grew up with.
The week is at an end. A new family has moved in. You can't ever go back inside. Those memories will never be re-experienced, they are but only memories. Nobody has died. You have somewhere better or similar. Yet you can't help but cry. It's simply sad.
This is the only way I can think to relate to people who don't get it. Chances are, they will never come close to understanding why most of us are so sad. No matter how trivial something is, when you love it so so much and spent an overwhelming amount of time with it, it's gonna hurt. I'm only happy I was able to share these years with all of you.
Halo 3 did so much for us. So let's raise that decade and a half old Game Fuel, a greasy, oozing slice of pizza, and seek out new memories in Halo.
The ups, the downs, and the 3 beeps how'd that guy kill me WHAT THE FUCK YOUR MOTHER'S A WHORE.
Cheers I'll drink to that
I never got to experience this era but I already feel nostalgic for when games just worked day one and had lots of content, but I did get that retro era gamer hype you give off, cheers
This was...a nice video. I remember getting Halo 3 and Metroid Prime 3 for my birthday. Those were good days.
Can't believe it's over. I remember playing it for years in custom games with all my friends
This was a huge nostalgia blast for me I remember all of this vividly and had the same game experience you did! Thanks for the vid!
I stood in line for Halo 3 in my freshman year of college. I dropped out of college that same year because I couldn't stop playing Halo 3. I love this game... it's sad to see it go.
I remember when halo 3 came out. I was 6 but me and my older cousins were playing halo 2 just waiting for halo 3 and when it came out it somehow surpassed the hype we had. Somehow the graphics, the music, the content all were extremely good. It might always be my favorite game of all time. It changed everything. It was as perfect as perfect could be. I have kept playing halo 3 through out the years. Last night playing was bittersweet. I was in a match where everyone just stopped killing each other and we met in the middle and we were teabagging to end an era.
Halo 3 was my life growing up! running home every day to hop online to hang with my friends! I have so many memories that I will forever cherish and will always live on! Thank you Microsoft, The OG Bungie team, and every fucker who played Halo 3 online during those times....you guys made a huge impact in my life and I wish nothing but joy in your life
I really miss life/gaming in 2005-2010.. things were simpler.. people stayed in lobbies and could have fun with alot of people..
Man. Friday and Saturday nights, me my brother and a couple friends would pitch in to order pizza and we would take turns playing on legendary. Then getting annihilated online and hoping to run into a blue flaming head. What a great video, Muta. Thank you!
Nice nade bro...
Anyway, I'm from the same era and went through the whole blade UI on 360 nostalgia trip. You captured it so well, though you did forget every one blessed with a microphone suddenly becoming an expert on Hannah montana lyrics and singing/screeching when they're not upstairs with your mother.
(also "Fat kid" was one of my favorite custom games)
(long story ahead):
Around the same time I was playing midnight club 3 dub edition Remix online PS2. The "club" system on there was extensive and you had a whole community of drifters who would "meet at the D-track" or go to "Krispy" (one of the most technical tracks you had to know if you wanted to compete or get any form of notoriety). You had to have a name for yourself in the community to even get in let alone work up the ranks.
I remember my first time running into the drift scene watching these guys race around a seemingly dumb/ez track (what I learned to be THE D-track). And dumb me challenged a club leader (Lucky 7's club) to a drift race. absolute decimation would be an understatement, me running auto transmission, improper tire, and no tuning to friction bias/drift/factor. I was schooled so hard, but that was the day they "let me in the scene" and taught me how to really get started.
I got straight to work, tuning/practicing/ setting up my car. It took me about half a year, but I remember finally coming back and there was the lucky 7 club leader again. I challenged him to a race. And BOOM win, it was like winning a boss fight in dark souls. It was ever so slightly, but of course you had to do these races in front of other members and such. It was from that moment forward I was "part of the scene" and had I place I could hang out online. I don't think I've ever had that experience again and I miss the online world/friends/ scenes we formed along the way. Then again, it also seems to be the way becoming an adult goes...
The end of a great era
Some my my strongest memories of gaming are the hundreds of hours I would pour into Halo Reach with my friends. Getting back on for the last night made me far more emotional than I really expected. We all knew it wouldn’t last forever but it still hurts to see it end. I’m thankful MCC exists so the games won’t die just yet.
Wow, I just finished replaying the Halo 3 campaign last night with my cousin. We're going through all the campaigns right now.
We will never forget Halo 3
