Halo CE, 2, 3 ODST, and Reach will forever be remembered as some of gaming's best. Halo 4, 5, and Infinite don't hold a candle to the collection of absolute bangers that Bungie put out.
In fact, I genuinely feel like if Halo hadn't been established by Bunige as a beloved, blockbuster series, 343 would've been toast after their first game. Without the Halo name they have nothing

What kills me is that there are still droves of morons who refuse to stop defending 343 here, endless excuses to justify them doing a shitty job over and over again.
Really annoying because the gameplay was fine but there’s no progression, no maps, it’s boring. At lease forge is releasing sometime this decade.

What makes it even more embarrassing? 343 had to actively program this in. They are fully aware couch coop works just fine on Series S/X and could easily work on PC. They effectively just commented out the feature for... whatever idiotic reason.
The community didn’t "do it themselves" The code for co-op was made by 343, is in the game right now, and works, but for some reason they’re not releasing it

Developers also underestimate how many married people or people with kids need split screen. My wife and I are still stuck at CoD Black Ops 1 because it is ridiculously hard to get split screen to work on hardly any game. We also play on MCC and play through the campaign. Do they expect families to buy multiple xboxes and multiple TVs and us all to sit in different rooms to play together? It's ridiculous.
I know those are completly different games but split screen is a huge part of why I love Mario Kart or other racing games.

You should also consider Brawlhalla, Rocket League, lego games, Black Ops 2 and 3. Also Overcooked is a fun party game. All of these games support 4 player split screen 👍

The Halo trilogy and reach were a huge deal for my sister and I. We spent hours every day playing those games on split screen. It's honestly sad to think that's not even going to be an option for kids these days.
Same. I grew up playing Halo splitscreen with my older sister. We played through the Halo 3 campaign dozens of times, and I probably played through The Storm, Floodgate, The Ark, and The Covenant at least 50 times with my friends from school during sleepovers. I was one of only two kids in my class who had an Xbox, so the only way my friends got to experience the amazing Halo games was through splitscreen at my place. It's sad to know that so many kids today will not have that opportunity

I’m a bit older, my memories are of LAN parties in my friends basement on two massive TV’s (they didn’t have flatscreen then) with two OG Xbox’s playing Halo 2- 4 player split screen with one team per TV playing TDM or CTF of Blood Gulch… good times.
If they actually committed to split screen, you guys could experience that too. That is what makes us sad (as in those who are Muta’s age,) we want you younger guys to experience that too. It’s really special.

The fact that you can literally glitch into the thing we've all been asking for anyway truly shows how incompetent 343i really is. The code basically exists, yet they still chose not to fully implement the feature (probably because they can't squeeze a battle pass purchase out of it)

I think they just decided not to spend resources testing and bug fixing to get it 100%. Which is, as you said, incompetence.
Technical debt may be part of it too, but management definitely carries a majority of the blame, especially since they induced the technical debt in the first place
I’m so done with people trying to defend 343’s scummy business practices, which sacrificed much of Halo Infinite’s potential. I’ve tried to be patient with them but this is so abhorrently inexcusable. I have no faith in 343’s ability to carry this franchise forward.
I’m amazed that with 343’s track record, people still think they can be redeemed. Literally every single product 343 has launched out for the Halo name has been riddled with both small and major problems but the fact people are acting like the games have absolutely no issues at all is just wild.

@@uhoh6706 Halo 4 wasn't riddled with many problems. 343 even went above and beyond to do server maintenance every couple of months to keep the game running.

@megaman37456, no Halo 4 absolutely was riddled with problems. Sure, the game was fine purely from technical standpoint, but the game was missing tons of game modes, file share basically didn’t work, theater mode was busted, the entire art style and sound design deviated so far from Halo that it seized to be a Halo game aesthetically speaking. Not to mention shit maps, massive aim assist, no de scope, perks and load outs, the list goes on. It’s a terrible game.
As someone who's been with Halo since the beginning it breaks my heart seeing how little 343i cares about the treasure they're in charge of. How fitting that the studio is named after a character from the games that was thought to be an ally but then ended up betraying everyone.
Xbox has been horrible at managing studios for over 7 years now, ironically the same time we have all been waiting for games to release. Infinite had bad vibes since the beginning and I think deep down none of us are surprised. The whole studio seems to be in turmoil. Not something you like to hear after being handed a billion dollars.

There are so many Mad MAD MAD Modders out there creating insane mods for the Haloverse and keeping the franchise alive while 343 actively killed it over a decade. From Software proved that staying true to the formula with Elden Ring IS IN FACT a successful method to make Bangers but 343 always tried to copycat other Franchises and jumped on the Hypetrain. This is why they Failed.
343 went Disco then died with it.
Halo infinite was kinda (I say this very loosely) a return to form. But that doesn't mean anything when there's less content than the games it's now trying to emulate
A perfect example is the current modding project Halo Reborn, it looks amazing man. 343i management was too busy trying to copycat other franchises taking fragments of their formula trying to make the next "big thing" that they forgot the formula to Halo they forgot what made Halo, Halo. Bungie gave them the red carpet treatment with the perfect path to go down and instead they chose a cliff. It honestly feels like with some of the decisions that 343i have made they genuinely hate Halo and want it to fail, choices that we see as obvious they are seemingly oblivious to or at least acting like they are with their actions.

I like that even when a game like Elden Ring isn't perfect, it is at least great enough that the community can save their debates for more interesting things like enemy design or gameplay speed. Halo Infinite's mistakes with content flow are so bad they basically paused longstanding community wars over stuff like advanced mobility. Even the growing debates about its campaign quality are hard to focus on when "good" or not the campaign doesn't even have co-op or a level select yet.
I like how Battlefield 2042 blamed their failure on this game that is also currently being heavily ridiculed

the last couple years have practically been the years wartime shooter games died. infinite had very little promises fulfilled, vanguard is regarded as 1 of the least impressive cods ever made, bf 2042 has gone down as 1 of the worst games in history. wartime shooters have definitely been failing big time

As someone who was introduced to Halo CE when it came out through couch co-op splitscreen at my cousin's house down the street it really pains me to see how far this series has fallen. I've been with Halo since the beginning. I was 4 years old when CE came out and it was my first game where I could play with my older cousins without sharing a screen. I loved it so much that I was the one who wanted to drive all the time, so I'm the one who did the warthog run.
That experience was unmatched until Halo 2 and 3 came out and I enjoy them with my younger brother and then my older step brother. Halo created memories that I'm thankful for that I still remember 20 years later. I even remember a specific match of team snipers on Sand Trap where I went from being trashed talked by this one guy to eventually becoming friends with him over Xbox Live.
343's games have NEVER left that kind of impact on me, and before anyone says I'm blinded by nostalgia just remember that I was around 15 when Halo 4 came out. I liked it on my first playthrough, and then I played on legendary and hated it. That game came out 5 years after Halo 3 (The peak in Halo's popularity and relevance), and 2 years after Reach ( The last good Halo game) If people can claim I hate 343's games because of nostalgia just remember that the gap between Halo 5 and Infinite was MUCH larger than the gap between Halo 4 and the actual good Halo games.
I don't hate 343 because I'm a Bungie fanboy (I don't even play Destiny, and I've only tried Marathon once) I hate 343 because they somehow managed to turn Halo into one of the most reviled game franchises of the modern gaming era. They spent so long trying to change Halo through "innovation" (basically just doing what hasn't been done in Halo, but has been done to death by everyone else) instead of iterating on what worked. They don't even deserve credit for MCC being fixed on PC. 5 out of 6 games are good Halo games. The 1 out of 6 that isn't belongs to them. Fuck 343.

A company so mismanaged they took twice the time to develop a game without half the content of all previous halos (even their own titles). A company that will commit PR nightmare after PR nightmare and think they're in a position to roll out changes that they know people dislike. Halo is truly a dead franchise in the modern age, your memories of the bungie days can blind you like they blinded me for so long but the games truly dead. kids nowadays genuinely don't know what halo is, the games have less players than any other shooter on the market. 343 killed halo

As a Halo fan, the entire community has been waaaaay too patient with Infinite. They promised us before season 2 release that season 3 would have: Splitscreen, Online Co-Op, Waaay more maps, more game modes and Forge.
What are we getting? 2 maps, and the confirmation of canceled split screen and forge beta to be released during the season. Not on the season 3 release date, and it's a beta.
What company announces modes in season updates now? Co-op and splitscreen should have been in the game RIGHT at the BEGINNING.
Imagine Forge (which was with every release) now being made into some beta??

When I heard that you could ‘glitch into split screen’ I figured it was someone with a computer programming background who somehow modified the game to allow split screen, which is still a very funny thing considering 343 decided not to implement it.
But I never would have guessed that it’s this easy to get to work; no third party software or skills. Just tricking the game to allow a feature that’s already buried in the game.
Laughable. Truly shows how inept and lazy 343 is, to not implement a feature that’s already in the game, and just needs some fine tuning.

343 isn't inept, or lazy, in the honest sense. they didn't somehow become crippled and develop alzheimers. They're just getting caught withholding how complete the game is, in an effort to feign growth phases. because that's what the "community" supports.
i can't say it about them in particular, but it's a lot easier to keep the ball rolling when you have everyone on board building the game. why not complete it entirely, make some software gates, and leave a skeleton crew including the community manager to address the issues brought forth by the community they... manage.

Mint Blitz did a great video of the executive level mistakes that sealed this games fate as a mediocre release. I'd highly recommend anyone curious as to Halo's current state to watch any of Mint's videos.
The Splitscreen decable kinda reminded me of something regarding the god old Halo 3 days on xbox 360, even over xbox live, splitscreen was a common thing, you'd often see people playing splitcreen during matches, denoted by the fact you'd see another person with the Same Gamertag, but with a (1) or (2) etc at the end.
I still see those a lot, while playing mcc on pc.

exactly wtf man, what happened to the days when you wanted to play mutliplayer online with the homies. guest accounts were the best shit ever and i hate that this is modern gaming. as long as the whales get fed fuck the actual consumers.
My brother and I had separate accounts even back then, and it always confused people that we were splitscreening because they all thought you could only do it with guests.
Imagine growing up playing and loving videogames, you study and become a game developer, only to work on arguably the worst times in videogame history with all this monetization bullshit and corporate intervention that hinders and kills creativity. Grew up playing and loving halo and ended up developing the games that are killing the franchise. Must be tough man.

I still buy multiple controllers for split screen gaming with my wife, son, sister, cousins, friends, whoever, because it was such an integral part of what got me into gaming as a kid; going to friends houses on the weekends or playing shooter/racing/fighting/etc games at home with my sister or friends when they’d come over, and so on. Things like this make me realize more & more that the experiences that made me love gaming & made it such an easy accessory to bond with so many others around me is on its last leg. I have most of my friends on Xbox & PlayStation, so it’s not that I can’t still game with them, but it feels so isolated & hollow compared to the memories that shaped me.
Thank you for calling out how awful they are. I love it when big creators like you and Cr1tikal speak up about how terrible 343 is doing.

This reminds me a lot of the game crash of 83' where people kept making shitty games in volume for a quick buck return on investment. I "could" see that happening again. I know there will be people out there that say it's not going to happen. But we will get to the point where enough people will not buy these horrible games.

Many will stop buying bad games but there just way too many games coming out from too many fronts. The reason it happened then was because gaming was much smaller compared to today, even if we stretch and say 99% of people stop buying AAA games, there's still AA and indie stuff, and a lot of it, it's just not feasible for another crash to happen

The worst part is that 343 thinks that we are the ones in the wrong. That we are ungreatful and have too high expectations for them. They think they know best over the franchises own fans. 343 admitted they knew the majoirty of the players wanted classic physics in infinite but they refused to add it in because they personally didn't like it. Not to mention how soft the devs are at 343 and how they censor anyone that gives them any negetive cristism on twitter, waypoint and other social media sites. Not to mention the fact that they pay halo content creators to shill for them (which is why you see so many of them being agiasn't fire343 despite the majoirt of the community wanting it)
If you aren't williging to listen to the majoirty of your fan for your franchise you don't deserve to be handling it. 343 still doesn't understand halos story, gameplay focus and more. Infact 343 was heavily involved with the halo tv show and some of the people currently writing for 343s halo tried to slander the bungie devs for being sexist in there storys with cortana. Its time halo finds a new company to handle it. But I doubt anything will change because 343 and microsoft doesn't care about halo and think that we are the ones in the wrong or the toxic ones.
The narcissism in devs like 343 is outstanding. They were nothing before Halo and got too close to the monetary sun trying to milk a franchise built up by the devs who left it behind.

Its funny that you mention playing with your brother, because being the eldest of 8 kids, splitscreen is one of the major ways that we bond and play games together.

As an indie developer, as weird as it might sound I really appreciate people being critical of development studios because it gives me more of an idea of what people currently expect and want from games and developers.

I know someone who worked at 343 and the developers actually wanted this and much more. In fact, the devs are begging to get more hands on the teams but upper management is shutting them down and refuses to hire the appropriate help needed to actually work on the game.
Please understand that theres an incredibly complex and bureaucratic process when it comes to making games. Developers who love their games unfortunately arent the ones that have the final say. They can only ask and pray.
I get that no split screen sucks but the understaffed and overworked team can barely make actual content. Of course split screen would be cut first
i guess is a no win situation for them, people wont forget splitscreen
I feel this for the people who modded Bethesda games then got job offers to work for them. Genuine, free enthusiasm of these ex-modders will have to deal with zenimax, crunch, budget restraints, etc.

I remember hearing that they had an entire team only working on the Slipstream engine for the game and that they where then moved elsewhere or let go and that the rest of the devs aren't fully understanding of how the engine is coded so they are kind of stuck relearning the engine.
I never played much halo as a kid or at all honestly and seeing that Halo Infinite was going to be Free to Play AND on PC at launch I was kind of excited to try and get into Halo for once... Well I enjoyed it for roughly a week and then just felt like there wasn't much to keep me there... Halo Infinite was the biggest fumble I've seen recently by a Triple A company. They had everything going for them but they launched without any content! Had they delayed it til Forge and all the other gamemodes and Singleplayer was available it probably would have kept people's attention but it just felt so barebones when it launched I had a hard time caring or sticking around for the long term...
battlefield 2042 is also a comparable fumble
try halo MCC, its almost the complete experience as it was years ago. and the price is stupidly good (almost 7 games for the price of one, + dlcs, + PVP/co-op)
(you can even get the games separately, one by one)

If I went back in time 10 years ago and told people that developers were taking over a year to implement basic game features, id be told I was certifiably insane. But here we are.
It is pretty shocking how they managed to take one of FPS’ juggernaut franchises and run it into the ground like an off-course ODST. Of course, they wouldn’t understand that reference.

I was telling my friends how not hyped i was for this game. I refused to give any benefit to 343 until they showed us their game and how this was their last chance for me to have any investment in their games how little that was. From halo 5 to now I have hated them unlike any other developer other than ea. They are incompetent as developers in general and only got big by launching off the backs of bungies masterclass in game design, only to fall flat on their face. All this has shown me how we shouldn't trust these people with any game let alone halo. Halo is now dying because of these assholes.

There was a glitch you could do on Call of Duty 2 for Xbox 360 to enable 16 vs 16 multiplayer way back in the day. First, someone on CoD2 had to create a regular mp lobby. Then a friend would start a multiplayer session on some other game and send you a invite to play. We always used the Xbox Arcade version of Gauntlet. When the person in the CoD2 lobby received the invite all they had to do was accept it, which would then essentially ask "are you sure?" Then you simply said no and it would throw them in a new lobby that allowed 32 players. It's ineffable how much fun we had doing this. At some point Activision eventually patched it, but it was amazing while it lasted.

Local splitscreen co-op is literally the only thing I am interested in when it comes to Halo. Messing around on Forge can be pretty fun, but i like co-op the most. Not being able to just do that without some stupid glitch is definitely enough to tell me what I need to know.
I had an argument with someone recently, and the first 30 seconds pretty much summed up my experience with them.
I feel like split screen coop is a lost art in games today, with games with an online only coop, if servers were to shutdown, a good portion of the experience to a particular part of a game is lost

This was actually found several months ago and has only just been getting more attention again since they cancelled it.
The fact that it is this polished while as old as it is (maybe even older), I can't understand what they had left to consider even cancelling it - and not just launch what they had - unless they haven't done any more work on it in all those months and they just didn't tell us.
Or they don't like it personally and don't see it giving them back direct value, so they cancelled it, pure business and ego.
My brother's an I were able to beat the campaign on legendary splitscreen and only encountered a few glitches. Like certain vehicles not spawning, audio just not playing, spawning issues but nothing frustrating. Had a lot of fun. Sometimes the glitches made things more fun honestly

I remember few days after it came out, I invited my brother over to play split screen…we tried for at least a half hour to find the settings but then we deferred to google. Then we were told that there is no split screen. That was a huge bummer of a moment. We’re not hard core gamers, we just want to have some fun in Halo Infinite together. Haven’t played in months.

My first ever experience with Halo was in '01 or '02, when I was 6 or 7 years old (respectively), with my older brother playing the campaign for Halo: CE. Ever since then I've played every Halo game I could co-op on split screen either with my siblings or with my friends. Split-screen Halo is way more than just a game mode, it is an experience, a lifestyle for some of us.

• EA BioWare released Anthem that outright bricked consoles and was abandoned within months
• EA Dice has been on a downward spiral since Battlefield 1 Turning Tides, releasing the Apocalypse DLC in such a buggy and down right unplayable mess for a month. Battlefront 2 and BFV both went a year without meaningful content with delays after delays, not to mention barely any communication from the community managers during that time and their launch controversies.

I stopped paying attention to Halo in February, only to come back 2 weeks ago to see that its in the exact same state. This is beyond embarrassing. It’s a little more complicated than “343 bad developers trash”, I’m not defending 343 as a company, I’m defending the devs who are over worked and only employed part time, the nameless higher ups are the ones we should be focusing on, they just want money and don’t want to take their time. The devs are just very mismanaged, I garuntee you they want to make a good game, they are just not getting the support needed.

Muta, I'm loving the love for Watch Dogs 2! Seriously it's unironically one of Ubisofts best games, alongside AC2, and 4 for me.
AC Unity is also another great game that got panned (for good reason, it launched half baked). Ubisoft has a lot of dogshit-barely average games, but every once in a while they make something amazing
Ive also heard Riders Republic is good.
But yeah WD2 along side rayman legends are two of Ubisoft best games.
I played Cyberpunk for the first time a few months ago and I really enjoyed it, to the point where I even put in the time to get the Platinum. Granted, it was on the PS5, but I really didn't come across any major issues besides the game crashing like 4 to 5 times in those 80 hours. Of course, it normally shouldn't have been crashing at all, but given the state it was in when it came out, that was still a huge improvement. Glad to hear CD Projekt Red is still focused on fixing it.
It's a fantastic game that had a terrible launch. Management screwed the pooch but to their credit they've been trying to make it better. It honestly should have released in 2021

Ubisoft literally stole the watchdogs 2 story/ setting and main character from me and my bestfriend, Demetrius Tipton who is the likeness of Marcus Holloway. They invited us to an event for "For Honor" back in 2014 and stole everything from us, hack.our emails etc. Even the deathball came from watching my friend do tricks with his yoyo at the event. They have no original ideas.
That's something I've never quite understood from some fans of either certain franchises, or consoles, or movies, etc. They feel like "real" fans should always be okay with whatever they get from said franchise, even if it's incredibly mediocre or downright bad products, instead of calling out bad practices or said bad products in order to make that franchise they like so much better

Been there done that within IT, really burned myself on that having to argue and threaten to quit to get paid. Quit that "job" as I got burned out and got a new job fully employed. While I am paid lower, I am assigned a company car with all fuel expenses paid for and as per contract I get 3 salary increases over the span of the next 2 years. Much happier with this job as I am not treated as a robot expected to know everything day 1. Also actually getting paid on time and not having to resend documents because the the corporately retarded managers at the staffing agency not doing their fucking jobs properly as they *constantly* lost track of my documents.
Subcontracting is a cancer to multiple industries imo.
I had one of the biggest tv's out there on the XB360, a 61 inch was pretty insane for that time period. We would play Halo duel screen, Tiger Woods golf, Guitar Hero. There was a lot of local social gaming back then where we would all pile up in the room and have competitions. We played the first Assassin's Creed...ah the memeries.
I was super excited when they surprise released multiplayer, and I played the campaign and genuinely enjoyed it. Sure, the campaign left a bit to be desired but it was certainly adequate, at least to me. Looking back, campaign lacked a lot of creative ambition that every previous game had. Open world actually resulted in a very limited experience, you had literally 2 environments, outside and inside. No changes to the world, cutscenes were visually identical throughout. Competitive multiplayer isn't why I played halo, it was forge and custom games and couch co-op. With how long it's taken for them to get these staple features into the game, I gave up on it already. Honestly I refuse to play another second of any Halo game produced by 343i. They are done.
Still saying that the campaign left a bit to be desired is putting it very lightly, it felt like I missed half a game when the first cutscene popped up.
@Dman [Formerly Chuck's] Audio logs work better as a supplement to the main story, doesn't matter the genre in my opinion, however, they shouldn't be a complete replacement to the main story, I hated when they did that same thing for MGSV Phantom Pain.

I really enjoyed Infinite, but if a game development studio can't respect split-screen, something that's very important to me as someone who grew up with a PS2 and a Sibling, I can't expect them to respect gaming as a whole.

I saw the writing on the wall with Halo 4 and knew Halo was going downhill but a lot of people defended 343I. They said we just needed to be patient and willing to embrace change, and that Halo 5 was definitely going to be better, then Infinite was going to be the ultimate comeback for sure. If 2/3s of a movie is bad, it's not going to be good at the end.

I've been saying this since Reach. Taking away credits earned offline when you first connect to Live. Then making it darn near impossible to earn credits offline thanks to diminishing returns. I just wanted cool armor for my rookie, but 343 basically said "buy Gold, play multiplayer, or GTFO." It was one of the biggest insults I've been hit with in gaming.
Honestly it seems like 343 dragged a 3 month goal into over 2 years.

Totally agree man. I remember like 20 years ago now when my older brother got an xbox and halo was the first game we played. I remember it being a huge part of our lives back then and the hype for halo 2 and 3. Good times. Now Halo just feels like a product rather than a passion project.

The industry has turned into overblown half assed attempts at draining our wallets, and since the PS3 there has been almost no real innovation in an industry that fought for decades to be considered art, only to sell out to greed.
