Youth & Young Manhood has to be the velvet underground & nico of its time. Terribly underrated but will get the high praise it deserves in years to come.
As they got older and hung up their partying shoes and stopped taking drugs and started familys. Their sound in turn became more refined. They are not playing hard rock and roll anymore because they aren't rocking and rolling. They are taking care of familys and dealing with life struggles. Hence the more refined sound that emerges from that. It's got nothing to do with selling out. Wether you like their new albums is a different matter.
I just bought their first album this summer and love it so much. I was pretty young when it first came out. It's a shame it took them so long to get the notoriety they deserved.
Saw Kings of Leon in their hometown of Nashville, TN last night (10/16/09)! While their music has changed a bit, they are still rockin as hard as ever and very appreciative of their success. THEY HAVE NOT SOLD OUT. just sold alot more records -- congrats
i dont understand how people can hate on KOL! every song they make is amazing. they put so much hard work into it, by far they are the best band in the world.
My all time favorite KOL song; love the studio recording. If you listen closely, you can tell they had fun recording this one. Listen to the background at one point in the recording. Caleb is enjoying singing this song. That's what it is all about.
@Romans10Verse9 THANK you. They are artists! Artists explore, of COURSE they're going to change!!!! they're not even sell outs, they the opposite in fact. All they consider is their art. And you're right, people probably would still complain if they sounded the same as they did back in the start. Personally, I LOVE both sounds, and it's like having two perfect bands in one!! what's to complain about?! they're not sellouts. Just artists-brilliant artists
If there was one song that I could personally sum up Kings of Leon in, this would definitely be it. I don't know what it is, but it is just THE classic KoL tune in my opinion.
my favorite part is the fact caleb is rocking 'ray bans' wayyy before they became popular...how is possible the followills are always 2 steps ahead of us all. arguably the best damn rock band of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree. The same argument came up against Bloc Party, fans cant expect bands to stay identical, they don't control them. I much prefer the KOL's old stuff, same for Bloc. But I don't see why it matters why bands change. Its not like they're taking away their old songs.
i think its a brilliant performance - i love the lazy quality to this song - its a drawl man - the dynamic is spot on- i would say he had a blast on some weed - he's too mellow for coke.
@Romans10Verse9 I like it when bands change and while I wasn't a huge fan of Only by the Night its still good new music. Each Album of theirs has debuted a new style maybe not a complete renovation but they haven't given us the same old tracks each outing. Overall I'd say Im still a fan of these guys, they're just great and they play circles around the next best mainstream rock band.
No, they just made it just a bit different, but it's still Kings of Leon! So stop wining. If you don't like the new albums, don't, but stop being such a baby about it. And this is for all you people who keep wining. Pick some other band!
its not like they sold out or they dont make good albuns anymore... its just that life goes on, things change, people change, music change... we can somehow still enjoy this era
What's wrong with playing a song slow? It's easy to tell if they're out of tune. You've got to please the crowd though, maybe it's been a long day and people are tired, it's good to mix it up and play around with the tempo. It's THEIR song so I don't understand how they can ever play it "wrong" (The whole tuning thing could be a mistake/lack of communication and has nothing to do with playing it "how they choose")
People just need to calm down...why are we fighting!? It's ridiculous, it's the same group. So they changed their style? Big deal. It's called reinventing, they've always done so. Since their first album they've been changing up styles, so what's the problem this time around? We all know they're going to change again...we don't know if it's for better or for worse but they will change. We'll see who the true fans are with their future albums...whether you're an old or new KOL fan.
the new stuff is for the new fans...just wait till the live shows when they play their stuff...see who the real fans are...the old kings will be back some day
Its good that they change their sound up from album to album, song to song. It makes em interestin. Or else they would be like Red Hot Chile Peppers and Muse. Theyre both great bands but i mean a lot of their stuff sounds the same and you get bored hearin the same type of music every song you listen to. But KOL changes it up, not one song sounds the same as another. theyre just amazin
@jverlander35 i agree with you but if you watch one of the interviews with Nathan the guy asks him why they've decided to change the style, and Nathan says: "isn't that the whole point of making albums"
@zeke2014 Nathan was right. How can a band keep making always the same music? They'd get boring soon. I think they are doing well trying to change their style and music, even though it means lose old fans.
@Romans10Verse9 You could not even say that this band is bad, they are the best band to come out the states imo. I agree with you thou. SHUT UP AND ENJOY THE MUSIC!
@ala709 totally agree i dont really like like there new stuff that much and always turn the station when i hear use somebody because i cant stand it anymore. but thank god for youtube.
you can't compare Bloc Party to KOL. amazing albums I admit every album doesnt sound the same but how generic and boring would that be anyway? and when you see them live they play songs off each so its all good! i read an interview with caleb the other day and he said that after they released aha shake that they needed much bigger sound, thats why the last 2 albums have "bigger" songs if you get me? still all 4 albums are so great! asif youth and youngmanhood&ahashake heartbreakwe'rerecordelive!
Personally I like kols earlier stuff better than the strokes youth and young manhood is just a teeny bit better than is this it. But both albums give an amazing feel of nostalgia
@ala709 yeah, it's pretty lame to discriminate against a fan because they're young :) and Trani is one of my favorites too. I saw them on Long Island this past September, and most people there had NEVER heard more than half of the set list, BUT they were still into it... so I try to look at it like okay they're coming for Sex on Fire and Use Somebody, but aren't they still fans? And what if they get into the older stuff as a result? Not all bad :)
@JackEllis94 "Look hard"? Like I give a damn about how I look on the internet. I didn't even say anything threatening to you so explain how I'm "trying to look hard"? The way you said that made it seem like you were attacking me because of the order I listened to their music in. I'm not having an argument with you here. If you disagree with what I said originally that's fine. I'm done filling up the comments with useless argument.
Youth & Young Manhood has to be the velvet underground & nico of its time. Terribly underrated but will get the high praise it deserves in years to come.
I CANNOT GIVE BACK MY LONELY LIFE
please back to the old KOL. they're awesome anyway .but i faall in love with this KOL :(
this is my favorite song they have
As they got older and hung up their partying shoes and stopped taking drugs and started familys. Their sound in turn became more refined. Well said to be ignorant enough to say they sold out I mean literally just don't even make a comment if you're going to say something stupid like that
im agree! im 14 and have listen to them since i was 12
I just bought their first album this summer and love it so much. I was pretty young when it first came out. It's a shame it took them so long to get the notoriety they deserved.

I like their older songs like this one. They're still great though. Great live performance.
I think this is one of the GREATEST shows from them
My all time favorite KOL song; love the studio recording. If you listen closely, you can tell they had fun recording this one. Listen to the background at one point in the recording. Caleb is enjoying singing this song. That's what it is all about.
GOD, I HOPE SO!!! youth & young manhood is the best album i know. still i don't know ANYONE who knows this album but me. SO sad
Same here.
@Romans10Verse9
THANK you. They are artists! Artists explore, of COURSE they're going to change!!!! they're not even sell outs, they the opposite in fact. All they consider is their art. there is nothing like youth and young manhood
@marnick1982 undoubtedly one of the best tracks they have ever published.. i prefer the other version though.
my favorite part is the fact caleb is rocking 'ray bans' wayyy before they became popular...how is possible the followills are always 2 steps ahead of us all.

@marnick1982 Coudn't agree more with you, amazing song, one of my all time favourites as far as rock/indie bands go.. so catchy : )
I agree. The same argument came up against Bloc Party, fans cant expect bands to stay identical, they don't control them. I much prefer the KOL's old stuff, same for Bloc. But I don't see why it matters why bands change. Its not like they're taking away their old songs.
Se ve q estan bien pasados jeje esto es rock n roll y no jaladas del vive latino charanguero!!!..
they have much improved since this period.. listen to their 2008 glasto performance of this song... kicks ass over this version
i think its a brilliant performance - i love the lazy quality to this song - its a drawl man - the dynamic is spot on- i would say he had a blast on some weed - he's too mellow for coke.
@MalphasDezidend i completely agree
@omfgwtfbirds yeah i know, but this show was in Europe.
@Romans10Verse9 I like it when bands change and while I wasn't a huge fan of Only by the Night its still good new music. @natashab17 true about the ray bans.....alot of hipsters were wearing them in 2006 and 07 ....you know when a style reaches the midwest its over used.
me too
lol anybody else noticed how stoned Caleb is in this vid?
it's probably because they wanted to look better, the reason stuff is in style is because it looks good.
thank god caleb's looks changed! lol
@Romans10Verse9 You could not even say that this band is bad, they are the best band to come out the states imo. I agree with you thou.

you can't compare Bloc Party to KOL. amazing albums I admit every album doesnt sound the same but how generic and boring would that be anyway? and when you see them live they play songs off each so its all good! i read an interview with caleb the other day and he said that after they released aha shake that they needed much bigger sound, thats why the last 2 albums have "bigger" songs if you get me? still all 4 albums are so great! asif youth and youngmanhood&ahashake heartbreakwe'rerecordelive!

Personally I like kols earlier stuff better than the strokes youth and young manhood is just a teeny bit better than is this it. But both albums give an amazing feel of nostalgia

@JackEllis94
"Look hard"? Like I give a damn about how I look on the internet. I didn't even say anything threatening to you so explain how I'm "trying to look hard"? The way you said that made it seem like you were attacking me because of the order I listened to their music in.
I'm not having an argument with you here. If you disagree with what I said originally that's fine. I'm done filling up the comments with useless argument.
Wy the fuck does everyone care about what they wear or how much more popular they are? Jeez they still make great music... thats all that matters
i have changed way i dress of course lol so have my parents but who can blame them
honestly i dont think its how they sold out, its more that they dont make as good albums anymore
ya know why is their so much dicussion over KOLs attire? theyve earned the right to do whatever they want so everyone should just chill
