I watched part of the review early this morning...and spent the WHOLE DAY WATCHING it!! This is a new anime that I now like, thank you Anime America!Bonus: It almost made me cry. Now that takes A LOT of work to do.
I was blown away by this show! I always loved ballet and clasic music! So an anime like this was my childhood fantasy that I couldn't seen as a child but as an adult.
Princess Tutu was my VERY first anime actually and I loved it so very much!! I showed it to my friends and they liked it but they all had the same question about it (Which I also had at around the time) 'Why did Fakir and Ahira not become a couple?' that's what they asked me a lot because I'll be honest, it was kinda clear that they cared for each other VERY much throughout the series. The way that everything was going, I was somewhat expecting it, I was surprised when it didn't because Ahira had turned back into a duck, but I did find it very sweet how Fakir stayed by Ahira's side even when she had turned back into a duck. To me it made it pretty clear that these two had a very strong bond and even though they did not end up together like I wanted them to in the anime, it made it clear that those two cared for each other deeply and had feelings for the other.
Zodia195 Well in my opinion it was a happy ending, it was just a tad bit different then what we wanted. The city went back to normal, Muito got his heart back, Rue got to be with Muito, and even when Ahira turned back into a duck Fakir stayed by her side. Rather than bittersweet it was a...well... 'A mature Happy Ending.'
When I was little I would dance around my house pretending to be Tutu and make my older brother be Mytho and my cats where ravens. It always makes me happy when this show gets attention.
Princess Tutu was one of the first animes I watched all the way through, and I loved it so much. Being taught ballet at a really young age, this was perfect. I absolutely loved the dark twists, music, and designs of the characters. Still want to cosplay Duck as Princess Tutu.
Fakir is so sexy in that dance scene were he is being all aggressive and trying to get out his emotions through dance. omg. He was just the sex! I used to judge the show so much. Also Princess Tutu > Madoka
Would like to add that Revolutionary Girl Utena also significantly changed the magical girl world (both are heavy undoings of the magical girl and fairy tale genres.) Anyway, thank you so much for reviewing this! Princess Tutu is my favorite anime of all time because I know most the music by heart, due to being a music major and/or growing up with it as a kid!
+juvygenius We can all guess what the Top 2 will be. It'll be a fight between the classical Sailor Moon and the crazy/awesome Madoka Magica lol. The question will be what #3 will be. I can see this one being #3, but personally I'd want to see MKR, Wedding Peach, Pretear, Pretty Cure, CC Sakura, Tokyo Mew Mew, and others I can't think at the top of my head to make the list.
When I was in the second grade (5 years ago) this was the first anime I ever watched and when ever my friends asked me what shows I watch I would say " princess tutu" and they thought it sounded lame and girly so I would say "Watch the whole show then talk to me". long story short they watched it and loved it. I dont know why thats hilarious to me.
I just finished the subbed version, and I must say: The translation is spot on from what I read in the original and the voices are perfect for the characters. In Drosselmeyer's case, it's an improvement, as the original always felt like either a pervy voyeur or on the verge of a coughing fit. I never judge an anime on appearances (Madoka left me unable to do that ever again), but even with an open mind, I was intrigued by how compelling this show was. And while it got formulaic for a bit, it's one of the only anime I have seen in recent history where I liked the ending. 7/10. Give it a watch. ~ TDG
I absolutely loved the lake dance scene with Fakir and Duck. IT WAS PERFECT!!!!!! And so was Duck's dance as her true self, a cute little duck. I also almost had a heart attack when I watched this review and heard Fakir call Duck a "bitch"..... But I still ship them, all the way to where Gallifrey is in the universe. I am a Whovian, and I don't care.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing s review of this anime. When people ask me what a good, short anime with plenty of magic and great voice actors is, I send them straight to Princess Tutu. The music and storyline had me from episode 1 and I never get tired of it. I've even debated cosplaying as Duck since I have her hair color :)
I remember after watching Desert Punk and falling for Kosuna's VA Luci Christian. So much so I looked up all her other parts and found The Ouran High School Host Club and Princess Tutu as one of the best. I love this show.
Man, I remember hearing Luci Christan saying how much she *WORSHIP* that role as Tutu! I mean, whenever she spied someone cosplaying as Tutu/Duck, she hugs them X3 Don't believe me? She comes to the Anime Matsuri almost every year in Spring Texas, come over here and see for yourself XD
I watched this on Netflix I want to say, 2 years ago? Anyway this was the first anime that I watched and I'm still waiting for a rival plot twist! I LOVE THIS ANIME!
Ah, Princess Tutu... It was one of the first anime I actually sat down and watched fully back years ago. I loved it then, but I love it even more every time I go back and watch it. It's definitely, in my opinion, one of the best magical girl anime out there. It's unique, and it's second have was dark. I must say I fully agree with this review. This is one anime to not let the name and surface keep you away. It's worth it in the end.
Princess Tutu was from the manga that I read but even the anime is so different from the manga really shocked me and surprise me bcuz even I didn't c it coming.
Anime America just that "that" happened and she is that, nd he is him, but alls good when you got fanfics. cause your dreams can come true in your fan fics.
To this day this is one of my top 5 favorite anime I've ever watched and my favorite magical girl anime (over both Madoka Magica and Sailor Moon). I love it in part because it actually understands both ballet and meta fiction and it took me several watches to get every foreshadowing detail in the first act. (Even the book Fakir is reading in German is a clue!) It plays with themes from familiar fairy tales, ballets, opera and classical music in ways that a person familiar with them gets the "in joke" but doesn't ruin it for someone unfamiliar. Also the dancing is real ballet dancing unlike so many that try to have ballet (like Tokyo Mew Mew) and fail miserably often using real classical choreography (the first act finale was literally her doing the pas da deux from the ballet alone). Also the way it turns the Magical Girl Tropes and a bittersweet story that isn't a "happily ever after" for all is so clever.
So I was studying on and off for a test with Princess Tutu going in the background. I finish the first arc at 7 ish and think, "eh I can watch one more episode." The next thing I knew it was 2 am and the series was over.
I'm starting this show tonight! Before this review I don't think I would've watched a show with this name and this plot, I'm giving it a try! Thanks for showing me new anime, Anime America!! :D
I actually did underestimated the show when I first saw it, but when I watched it a second time, I did enjoy it. I ship Fakir and Duck regardless of how it went.
When I first discovered this anime show I didn't think I was going to like it, but it's a great show! I too highly recommend it. Don't let the title fool you. It's worth watching.
I think it was because I love fantasia, that it drew me to this show. I love classical music. But this show is definitely in my top 10 of Anime. I loved this show.
Well if I manage to stick around with Ouran Host Club to the end, I think I can handle Princess Tutu. Just please let it not be overly girly and magical. Otherwise I'll jump back to finishing up on my 2011 Hunter x hunter.
+Revolt Wolf I love Hunter x Hunter and Princess Tutu. Like they said first half is generic, second half is where the awesoness (and feels) kick in. Ahiru's really loveable as well.
This show is great, a real masterpiece in my opinion. I love this show so much lets just say I've watched this show 7 times, soon to be 8. Cause this makes me want to go and watch it right now. Seriously WATCH IT.
I'll admit when I first heard the name and looked at the animation I was like "Ummm..." It isn't because I'm not a girly person or anything I just thought I'd be like barbie in fact I love ballet! So I thought I'd be a huge let down... Hell no! I take back everything I ever said before I watched it I got hooked the second I heard Waltz of the Flowers in the theme song. Watch it! You will not regret it! I agree completely with every word of this review!
This was one of the anime I watch when I was younger, and LOVE IT. I wanted to show my family because they ask me what type of anime to watch but I really did not know what anime they would like.
yes i own it and i love it my little boy loves it too.... it is an anime that i watch over and over again.... it was my birthday present to myself one year...
LOL yes finally someone gives this anime it's due. One of my fav AMVs is set to this anime. I will admit though, I do forget about this anime and how twisted it gets. I won't spoil a thing, but this anime will get you crying.
the ending to this show almost had me crying
I know right?! I cried my eyes out!
+ShadowAshlee PrincessAshlee925 (Ashyloopsy) me to!
Me too!
bad ending?
+Anthimos Konstantinidis It's more of a bittersweet ending IMO.
I watched part of the review early this morning...and spent the WHOLE DAY WATCHING it!! This is a new anime that I now like, thank you Anime America!Bonus: It almost made me cry. Now that takes A LOT of work to do.

+Isabella Garcia Yeah that ending was too bittersweet for me. I want my happy endings dammit lol.

+Zodia195 I believe the ending was what it should be^^
me toooooooo!!!!
I FEEL THE EXACT SAME WAY
When I was little I would dance around my house pretending to be Tutu and make my older brother be Mytho and my cats where ravens.
Am I the only one who ships Duck (ahiru) with Fakir? They're just so cute together!!
At first I shipped Rue and Fakir, but Then Muthto goes and messes things up. But I grew to like Duck and Fakir's relationship
duck and fakir is so adorable!
Me, me! I ship them too!
I really wanted them together in the end
Damn I don't doe
Bought it on eBay at a very reasonable price and was able to watch it within two days. I. WAS. BLOWN.AWAY.
Fakir is so sexy in that dance scene were he is being all aggressive and trying to get out his emotions through dance. omg. He was just the sex!
I used to judge the show so much.
Also
Princess Tutu > Madoka
Princess Tutu will ALWAYS be better than MadoMagi in my opinion (no one kill me please)
Would like to add that Revolutionary Girl Utena also significantly changed the magical girl world (both are heavy undoings of the magical girl and fairy tale genres.)
Anyway, thank you so much for reviewing this! Princess Tutu is my favorite anime of all time because I know most the music by heart, due to being a music major and/or growing up with it as a kid!
Having shown this, you should totally do a top 10 Magical Girl Series list.
+juvygenius We can all guess what the Top 2 will be. It'll be a fight between the classical Sailor Moon and the crazy/awesome Madoka Magica lol. The question will be what #3 will be. +juvygenius
that would be awesome!
+Annette Jones

7/10. Give it a watch.

I loved this series. Not because I'm a ballet dancer and I can easily relate, but because like you said was the story being perfectly structured.
This was the first anime I've ever watched (well, realising it was an anime anyway)
It still holds a special place in my heart
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing s review of this anime. I love this anime! I watched this when I was 8 years old! And I freaking love you guys!!
Man, I remember hearing Luci Christan saying how much she *WORSHIP* that role as Tutu! I mean, whenever she spied someone cosplaying as Tutu/Duck, she hugs them X3
Don't believe me? She comes to the Anime Matsuri almost every year in Spring Texas, come over here and see for yourself XD
This was the first anime I binge watched. Left an amazing fucking impression on me.
The ending had me down in tears.
I watched this on Netflix I want to say, 2 years ago? Anyway this was the first anime that I watched and I'm still waiting for a rival plot twist! I LOVE THIS ANIME!
Dude this show was my jam! Thanks for reviewing it!! :D
I'd never heard of princess tutu until my sister found it on amazon prime but since then I cant stop re-watching it over and over again
Fun fact: the girl who voiced Duck also voiced Honey-Senpai in Ouran High School Host CLUB!
I watch this anime in Animax Maybe 10 or 9 years ago. This anime is lovely.
Ah, Princess Tutu... It was one of the first anime I actually sat down and watched fully back years ago. I loved it then, but I love it even more every time I go back and watch it. Ahiru x Mytho?
A title that transcends generations. I love it. My friends kids love it. My mom likes it. Just an AMAZING series!!
To this day this is one of my top 5 favorite anime I've ever watched and my favorite magical girl anime (over both Madoka Magica and Sailor Moon). Well if I manage to stick around with Ouran Host Club to the end, I think I can handle Princess Tutu. Just please let it not be overly girly and magical. Otherwise I'll jump back to finishing up on my 2011 Hunter x hunter.
Hunter x hunter is the BEST ANIME I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! :D
+Revolt Wolf Take my word for it, it gets very drama oriented alot to keep it from all girly. And there's always this mystery vibe to it.
Zodia195 Awesomeness, looking forward to it.
+Revolt Wolf I love Hunter x Hunter and Princess Tutu. Like they said first half is generic, second half is where the awesoness (and feels) kick in.
Ahiru's really loveable as well.
+Revolt Wolf It's definitely not overly girly, especially not the second half.
