A little concerned about the condition of your birds, but a good id'ing video. My quail are set to hatch tomarrow and I have no idea what breeds I ended up with
They are just molting. The heavy breathing is due to being handled for the camera. They are the lowest on the food chain, so no matter how friendly you are to them, when you pick them up, they panic and think they're about to die.
I can tell it's hot where you are. This was informative. I have 6 chicks I hatched out recently. 2 tuxedos but one is brown and one black. One all yellow but with a single black dot on its head. And three that I've been calling wild types because they're all varying shades of brown and black. They're a week old today and just starting to get their feathers.
Hello. I ordered blue scaled quail eggs to hatch. I had a great hatch of 10! My question is they are all a solid dark chocolate brown with a little white on their heads and or necks! I can’t seem to find what kind they are? Do you know? I love your video! I’ve never been able to tell males from females unless they “garble” or have no feathers in their backs. Most of mine are “conturnix” light gold with beautiful brown heads. I’ll finish your video to see what exact kind they are. Thank you! Cindie
Out of 40 or so tuxedo chicks in 4 batches, I've only ever gotten 2 that kept the pure white belly into adulthood. Most ended up with only a white patch on the chest and/or wings. I breed them with the whites to try to increase the chances but so far no luck.
Hello. I have a red tuxedo hen( Happy Feet ) 11 weeks old that I put with a with a light silver rooster ( Blue ) 6 weeks and 3 days, both young still but hope the babies look nice. I also have a FALB FEE hen ( Silk ) that is 6 week 2 days oldin with them but has not layed any eggs yet. Happy feet layed her first egg at 5 week 6 days and that was very early! I want to just pick the chicks of the screen there so cute! ❤😍 Thank you for the info
thank you for your vids.I'm learning a lot. However why are your adult quail missing feathers and look weird feathered... are they supposed to look like that when they turn adult? I have 2 quail (first quail ever) but they have feather all over and their feather go in the same directions ... are they supposed to look like that?
All of the English White/Texas A&M have a trait for the black spot on the head even when they are pure white elsewhere... Not sure if I had a pure breed but very rarely do I see one that is 100% white
I ordered from Ebay and got all white ones they died not long after hatching but they were all white. The only one that lived was a white with black spots ( snowy white with a leopard print look )
@@tgblaser what’s the diff between silver and eng white? I heard that silver and gold italian has a lethal gene so you don’t want to breed 2 of the same kind together
Claudia Gallagher i disagree with the way he houses his birds. The only reason why I watch some of his videos is because he has good information about Quail. You would think with all the research he’s done he would work to have his birds in a more humane environment.
I was wondering if the chick color indicates the adult bird color. I bought a run of coutornix wild color and ended up with a yellow chick with a blackish dot on the back of his head.
Do you have snowflake coturnix quail? I have a quail I cannot identify. Could be a snowflake. He looks like a golden Italian except the speckles are black.
Update! They are now a year and 1 month old! I keep them as pets In a giant cage in my room. (not a wire cage, it's wood and plexi glass) I have 15 more in the incubator on day 10 right now.
so this is our first year raising quail. we hatched 120 and then culled about 90 and kept the rest for eggs. we are really enjoying the quail. but it's over 100 degrees here. I've lost about 5 total. yesterday I put ice in their cages and had a fan blowing. I managed not to lose any yesterday. do you have any ideas of what we can do to keep the rest alive threw this heat wave?
@@hamdam6649 30 would give about 25 females. That is about 150 to 175 eggs a week (during breed season). Culling 90 gives a family of 4 about 20 meals give or take. Remember, these are small. My general rule is 1 quail, 1 person, 1 meal. A family of 5 needs 5 quail for 1 meal. The plus side is reproduction rates. 18 days to hatch. 10 weeks max to full grown butcher time. Once you get about 20 good girls, you can easily keep the freezer stalked.
If there small full grown I can get eggs to hatch for egg laying hen's sadly roosters will have to be re-homed beacuse roosters are illegal in the city.
Your quail are in terrible condition, panting, loss of feathers, missing toes, they look really sick. I hope you do something about that you may need to alter living conditions.
Why are all your adult birds so tatty and dirty looking? That poor females back missing feathers from being mated too often. My adult quails are glossy and shiny. Guess you're battery farming.

Yes very concerning, poor birds. Very sad to see how stressed they are
@@TexasFreeBirds bad feather quality is a huge indicator of either poor nutrition, cramped conditions, or other issues

Getting my quails tomorrow. Just too excited. Thanks for the education!

It's quite interesting that quails resemble baby chickens when they're young, don't you think?
This video is super helpful, now i know how to identify my assorted quails thanks for making this video
Your quail looking sick
he should give em a dust bath.
Adult birds are in bad shape.
Thank you!! Great teaching video!!!

Why is it that all your quails seem to be hyperventilating? They look very distressed and not well.
Edgar Perez yeah I was wondering myself
Yeah I see where your coming from, that’s weird
I wonder if it may be too hot there or perhaps they don't get handled very much. Very unusual from what I know.
Looks like they r in a small cages with no space

Thanks for showing.

A quail JUST hatched and it's definitely a english white!

Most excellent thank you very much
I think the reason why the look like they are sick or injured is because they may be shedding
I dont know, they have completely bald patches, that doesnt look like shedding. None of my familys birds looked like this.
Thanks, good one.
so helpful for me
Your quail seem sick. I keep mine in a wooden/ plexi glass cage in my room. it's about 5ft long. Take care of your pets even if you farm them
