My teen just watched The Lord of the Rings Trilogy with me recently, and she was struck at how much Tolkien's work has inspired other books like the Harry Potter series, for example. She said that the concept of horcruxes in the Potter series was a direct rip off from Sauron and the One Ring.
I disagree with that sentiment. I think the various similarities you point out about Harry Potter is rooted in mythology and made up creatures. But Harry Potter is STILL a great story.
I would substitute the words "direct rip off" and replace them with the words "primary source of inspiration" because even Mr. Tolkien, as wonderful a storyteller as he undoubtedly was, was inspired by various stories and whatnot before sitting down and conceptualizing the Lord of the Rings universe.

What would be cool is if they made a game where you could play as him in Middle Earth. Just slicing through enemies with his mace. Increase his power though through the game and end it with max power and the ability to take out an army with ease. Sauron is not supposed to be the protagonist. They shouldn't have made a show where all the other characters are nasty in the extreme, and Sauron is the only likable character. Also the only competent, strong male character at all.
Melkor did not adopt the name Morgoth, or in full, Morgoth Bauglir "Dark Enemy - The Constrainer", it is Sindarin Elvish and was bestowed on him by the Elves of Middle Earth.
@@gpwnedable No, it is Sindarin. Morgoth Bauglir is Sindarin in form, shown by its Welsh-like appearance, rather than the Finnish/Latin appearance of Quenya. I cannot recall if Feanor knew Sindarin at the time, I suspect not. Feanor's original was Moriñgotto or Moriñgotho in Quenya.
@@muttleyjones2 Moriñgotto or Moriñgotho is in another of Christopher Tolkien's compilations of his father's unpublished works. However, it does not change the fact that Morgoth Bauglir is Sindarin.
@@urseliusurgel4365 You do know what the unpublished works are, don't you? They are the rough outlines of a story that isn't the finished product. The published work states that Feanor named him Morgoth after he slew the two trees and Feanor's father. Since they were in Valinor and had no contact with the Sindar at that time, it isn't Sindar.
The Nazgul did not "don" the humans' rings of power--they had had them as men, then the rings were later put aside under Sauron's control. Sauron had the Nazgul enthralled--he didn't need to use the rings to control them any more. The nine rings of power were not present with the Nazgul.
sauron is kind lord always look into the stars and universe to prove others that middle earth can be like valinor that nothing dies in middle earth but his master is seeking destruction and death
Thankyou. I tried really hard with the pronunciations, did tons of research and listened to a expert to learn how to pronounce the words of the Black Speech.
If Sauron ever had a son of his own, I had liked him to have his father's old name as Mairon. Would be pretty perfect. So the 3rd Dark Lord would be Mairon son of Sauron. It doesnt have to be a biological son but an adopted. Or the Chosen one to become the next Dark Lord.
04:00 f _... took up the name 'Morgoth' ..._ No, he didn't. He always called himself 'Melkor', and so did Sauron when he seduced all of Númenor to Melkorism, the cult of Melkor. He received the name 'Morgoth' by the elf Féanor after murdering his father and stealing the Silmarils.
Its so cool from you to guide new viewers with the story of Sauron, thank you. I'm so tired of other videos just throwing hate to "the rings of power" just because Sauron was shown from another perspective before going back to being evil. I mean there other scenes in the show as well that are beautifully performed such as the chants of female dwarves in the cave..that got me chills, not to mention I got to see the dwarves cave and I'm so glad I got to see Numeror when this land existed.
I am pretty sure the criticisms for Sauron's story arc from the show goes beyond just being a different perspective. I've seen some really good adaptations of where characters and events were told from a different perspective as well, but they were done to still work with the existing lore. The problem with this reimagining of Sauron is that it also affects characters and events that led up to the story that it's supposed to be a prequel to. For example, Galadriel didn't have a hand in Sauron turning evil, because if she did, then her roles and actions for the next thousands of years wouldn't add up. That's a big misstep in the writing, as it involves two central characters from the whole story. Sauron being in the form of Halbrand would have been fine, had they not chosen to make it so Galadriel would be responsible for him turning evil. I think the show did some things well. I personally liked the dwarves a whole lot, especially Disa. She just had an air about her that made her a really good dwarf lady. Queen Miriel was exceptional too, IMO, and I enjoyed the Harfoots even though apparently a lot of people didn't lol So I think it's completely fine to enjoy the show. But I can also give credence to the criticisms and I think it's important not to dismiss them as shallow opinions just because it doesn't coincide with how we feel.
Tough crap. Tolkien made the books and the writers did what thry did to be spiteful. They release the rings of wokeness on the anniversary of tolkiens death
Melkor rabel against Illuvatar and pick up the name Morgoth? Man...... Explain people that Melkor is god of darknes who was cursed by the elves with name Morgoth! Sauron was MAYAR just a bit lesser spirith from VALAR and he was Melkor's right hand....... missleading content in this video. Guy dont know the subject he took 👎👎👎👎
I used to like this stuff as a kid but listening to all these adults arguing about Tolkiens made up elvish is hilarious. Better to have knowledge and understanding of the original Indo-European mythology of gods v demons. The Ramayana is a good start.
Gollum’s wife, Ilonel (?). Where did you find this, please? I only find mention of an elf wife named Undómiel. I’m puzzled. “Execute him”?? When was Gollum ever executed ??!
Virtuous and uncorrupted, just as Eru had made him...If Eru were a timeless and omniscient being he would know that Morgoth would fuck up. That suggests that Eru was incompetent or at least lazy.
In Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Return Of The King, Gollum didn't tripped and fell into the Cracks of Doom along with the Ring, Frodo Baggins grabbed Gollum and threw him down to the Cracks of Doom while trying to reclaim the Ring in another struggle and eventually and nearly threw himself down there too but clinged on to the ledge while Gollum and the Ring fell into the Cracks of Doom and perished.
I wish they did Morgoth first before going into this series. That would have helped explain the history of Sauron. Besides we already have like 4 or 5 movies of Sauron as the villain in one form or another.
I mean kinds true but not really I agree definitely should have went on morgoth and then the rest but as far as 4 to 5 movies true but not true I better statement would be we got semi acquainted in those movies but we never true get anything good or saw anything truly good from sauron scene wise there needs to be more

Not only is Rings of Power not canon, but in many cases is the exact opposite of what Tolkien wrote. Never ever refer to Amazons abomination.

@@johnkamadeva4747 I couldn't agree more. Morgoth managed to escape from the Halls of Manwe the first time the Valar caught him, which is why he was imprisoned in the Void the second time around.
Melkor was not initially loyal to eru. Right from the start of the song of creation he was weaving in his own tunes and sowinh discord, laying to waste the designs of the other valar following erus song. And he didn't take up the name Morgoth that was the name Feanor gave him after melkor stole his silmarils and ran off to middle earth. Jeezus. At least read the cliff notes before deciding to make a video
He didn't took up the name of Morgoth it was given to him by Feanor by cursing him for stealing the silmarilions. And for the record the Tv sires are not even considered canon at all due to its messed up writing etc. (and most Tolkien fans and P.J fans agree on that fact)
That is very interesting character of sauron ever shown, he's going to be in death battle and I think his opponent will be the Lich King (world of Warcraft), I don't know what his capabilities are but I believe if the matchup is happening on season 9 it's going to be quite interesting
Sauron had many names: Mairon, Annatar, Artano, Aulendil, Gorthaur, and Zigûr and as Sauron prohibited his acolytes from ever speaking his name aloud. In a way, he was perverted by Melkor into being the baddie he became. He was all about his appearance whether it was powerful, generous, or wise. As a side note, Sauron was the same as the Balrogs, both Maiar when they were created by Eru Iluvatar. Until he discovered the dissonance that gave him power, he was at the same rank as Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast and the other unnamed two Istari. Given how many times he deceived the most holy, high-born, royal and wisest of all Eru Iluvatar's creations, he must have had a remarkable power to persuade and seduce and in so doing, harness the power of creation in all its forms. Such a being is worth discovering no matter how many putrid things he did. It also demonstrated the balance of Middle-earth, the yin/yang of creation.
Having now listened to this again, I find a lot of things not quite right. I'll start with something simple: learn how to pronounce Westernesse and Sindarin, please. As part of Tolkien's prodigious legendarium, he made several entire languages, Westernesse, or common speech, and Sindarin among them. The Lossoth of Forochel also had their own language as did the Dwarves, but Professor Tolkien didn't flesh out this one for us to learn, When you've at least gotten the pronunciation correct, learn some Black Speech. At least the Ring Poem, please. If you're going to nerd this out, Sindarin and Qenya are the basis of the Black Speech. Learn that one and you've learned the other. Please.
Reading LOTR, Silmarillion, etc ... & even GOT, & also watching the media- movies, shows, etc... made me realize that i know way more about characters, wars, geography, and so on ... about these imagined worlds, than the one i actually live in, & am a part of, that it sparked a whole new interest in me, for history, maps & geography, important people..... In my own life/reality. This realization was profound, & changed me, & opened me up to so much more to learn & experience, & i swear, increased my knowledge, in general.
Melkor never took the name of Morgoth. He never named himself like that, not even once.... The name Morgoth Bauglir was given to him by the elf Feanor after Melkor, with the help of Ungoliant, destroyed the 2 trees of Valinor, killed his father, Finwe, and stole the Silmarils. Morgoth means, in Sindarin, the Dark Ennemy of the World. Melkor always thought he was the rightfull King of Arda, not its ennemi. From the Silmarilion, Quote: "At Formenos Melkor slew Finwë and ravished the treasury of Fëanor, including the Silmarils. Then he passed over the icy Helcaraxë, entering once more into Middle-earth. He had struck swiftly and surely. Fëanor cursed him, naming him Morgoth, and by that name he was known ever after to the Eldar." Melkor never used that name, although he knew that it was how the Noldors named him. Another misconception here. Sauron participated in the crafting of the 9 and the 7, but he was totally unaware of the 3. He became aware of the 3 only after crafting the One. But the elves saw his deception, and removed their ring ( Although it has never been made clear if the elves wore those rings before the One was created.) But one thing is for sure, Sauron never saw or touched the 3 rings the elves had made. Darn, get your Lore right... please.
And in spite of all Sauron's machinations, he still fell before the power of Narsil, Gondor, Rohan, & the Elves. TWICE. I admit I would've loved a Thranduil vs Sauron one-on-one. Galadriel kicked Sauron's ass in a pissed off moment. I suspect Thranduil is equally, if differently, powerful.

Morgoth was the real villain
Too bad Amazon took a massive steaming dump on Tolkien's work. Disgraceful and demeaning to OG material. Amazon's RoP is a terrible fan faction.
Wow..an immense amount of lore in one video! Amazing!
What would be cool is if they made a game where you could play as him in Middle Earth. Just slicing through enemies with his mace. Increase his power though through the game and end it with max power and the ability to take out an army with ease. Kind of make it like a Middle Earth skill tree system where when you level up, you get a point but the skills tremendously help you once purchase one.
Id play
Yea close as we get to any of that is the middle earth shadow of Mordor and shadow of war between sauron and celebrimbor
@@deenisburgess7973 Both series top notch but the only issue was both of them finished pretty fast, i'd love to see a game like that with Sandbox rules
Battle of middle earth 2 RTS style you can play as either side and conquer middle earth.

So, basically, Sauron was disembodied, a bit like Voldemort at the start of the Harry Potter series and the ring of power was a bit like a horcrux.
Except LOTR is first, so Harry Potter did a copy 😺
Sauron is not supposed to be the protagonist. They shouldn't have made a show where all the other characters are nasty in the extreme, and Sauron is the only likable character. Also the only competent, strong male character at all.
Melkor did not adopt the name Morgoth, or in full, Morgoth Bauglir "Dark Enemy - The Constrainer", it is Sindarin Elvish and was bestowed on him by the Elves of Middle Earth.
Quenya. It was given to him by Feanor.
@@urseliusurgel4365 That's not what Tolkien wrote in the Silmarillion.
If you pay attention he says Sauran can't be killed by fire arms.Did I miss something like guns in lord of the rings?lol!
Morgoth was definitely the ultimate evil of Middle-Earth; Sauron was his shoe shine boy.

Thanks for explaining all of this about The Lord of The Rings I really appreciate this
Hold on, the figure that appears as a man in Jackson's LOTR, Is the Witch king of Angmar He leads the ring wraiths and Sauron's army
The Nazgul did not "don" the humans' rings of power--they had had them as men, then the rings were later put aside under Sauron's control. Sauron had the Nazgul enthralled--he didn't need to use the rings to control them any more. The nine rings of power were not present with the Nazgul.
This guy is a lord of the rings villain icon.
sauron is kind lord always look into the stars and universe to prove others that middle earth can be like valinor that nothing dies in middle earth but his master is seeking destruction and death
Just be sure to never use Amazon's lore as canon to the LoTR's saga.

_... took up the name 'Morgoth' ..._
No, he didn't.
Not Toklien not canon......
If they just had a movie called Sauron done WELL without all this WOKE crap it would be a blockbuster
I thought the Númenóreans, had fought against Melkor. Not with him.
Well the rings of power made him an incel also it doesn't take place in any time period of tolkien's work
Virtuous and uncorrupted, just as Eru had made him...If Eru were a timeless and omniscient being he would know that Morgoth would fuck up.

Do NOT ever make any reference to Amazons mockery of Tolkiens work when trying to discuss middle earth lore. Not only is Rings of Power not canon, but in many cases is the exact opposite of what Tolkien wrote. The Amazon show runners and producer are not Tolkien fans, nor are they versed on middle earth lore. They just paid for the right to use the Tolkien brand and created a story that was not Tolkien. Never ever refer to Amazons abomination.
Thank You for an Interesting presentation.. I’m off to purchase the Silmarillion!
Hmmm title seems too over-exaggerated for Sauron don’t you think, The Devil who tore apart Tolkien verse? Lol a title like that alone would only go to the OG Dark Lord Melkor/Morgoth since he is the ultimate villain of Tolkien verse aka Legendarium not mention he cause way way much more devastating chaos and destruction in his wake on Middle-Earth than Sauron ever did
I’d say Morgoth is literal Devil himself while Sauron is like the Anti-Christ
Sauron is but a shadow of his master,Morgoth.
@@Rellana1 true but he is still not the devil, Tolkien made it clear that the only devil in his works is Morgoth alone
@@johnkamadeva4747 I couldn't agree more. Morgoth managed to escape from the Halls of Manwe the first time the Valar caught him, which is why he was imprisoned in the Void the second time around.
Im just here to say Rings of Power is trash and should be thrown out, never to be heard from again.
Vengeful entity not devil . Morgoth or Sauron. Just a dark side of divine being . Envy , hate and other mortal sins of others .
Blossoming farts in the wind. Hobbits and elves and Aragorn took him out.
Yeah cause sacrificing people in a pit doesn't mean your evil, it's just another form of control is all.
I regret reading Sauron's wiki beforehand because this video is verbatim.

That is very interesting character of sauron ever shown, he's going to be in death battle and I think his opponent will be the Lich King (world of Warcraft), I don't know what his capabilities are but I believe if the matchup is happening on season 9 it's going to be quite interesting
What in the fuck?
This does not count as a backstory or Origins the show is trash meant to destroy the franchise
Rings of Powertrip is an Abomination.
Please.
Great video! Rings of power is utter garbage however
confusing Utumno and Angband.... geez!
You should repeat things more and use a computer voice
What is the name of the game you are clipping in the video?
If it's not written by Tolkien then it's not relevant.

Reading LOTR, Silmarillion, etc ... & even GOT, & also watching the media- movies, shows, etc...
made me realize that i know way more about characters, wars, geography, and so on ... about these imagined worlds, than the one i actually live in, & am a part of,
that it sparked a whole new interest in me, for history, maps & geography, important people.....
Fëanor cursed him, naming him Morgoth, and by that name he was known ever after to the Eldar."
Melkor never used that name, although he knew that it was how the Noldors named him.
Darn, get your Lore right... please.
GOOD VIDEO, the detail is nice.
That said, in the first thirty seconds - "...based on the Peter Jackson trilogy of films." What about the books.
