@@pauladrianordovas7447 The proteins in the egg will stick together in a lump if you just shake them. you need something to bounce around in there to break it up. Same reason you use a whisk or fork to beat eggs, rather than a spoon.
I've watched a few of Dan's reviews, and I think the one BIG test he misses is CLEANING-- all of these gadgets look MUCH harder to clean with grooves, fins, and hinges where food can collect.
Dan mentioned in several episodes that they don’t think particular gadgets would clean effectively, like the hotdog spiraliser for example. They suggested a fix for that one, but they didn’t show them cleaning it.

i feel like the egg cracker and the juicer would be great for someone who only had one usable arm/hand.. the juicer is also great for people with weak wrists or have carpal tunnel.
That’s what a lot of convenience gadgets were originally made for! Capitalism just doesn’t seem disabled people a sufficiently marketable demographic, despite the fact that we make up roughly 20% of the population.

That egg cracker is one of the only things shown on this program that wasn't cheap useless plastic trash. It's built well, has a defined purpose, and works as expected. Would be good for someone who has maybe a motor impairment.
The egg shell cracker is great, I would say it’s perfect for people with disabilities or kids trying to help in the kitchen, if they’re like 4yo, they wouldn’t have the control to not be messy with eggs. I wouldn’t use, and most people can cook wouldn’t need it, but great to attend the needs of those who can’t
He does say some objects are bigger than they need to be for how useful they are, but I feel like that's a bit of a case by case basis? Every home is different, and even in the comments here you can see some ppl consider some things more useful than he rated 🤷
its so great that he take disabilities and dexterity into account the amount of times i see "this is useless just do it the normal way youre being lazy" like if the accommodation doesn't help you, its not for you especially with gadgets like these making sure they are usable for people with low dexterity is so important because many of them are created to make problems we face easier
Y'know, I often watch and rewatch these videos and it's always interesting. So many of these kitchen gadgets were designed for disabilities, but not with actual disabilities in mind for some. Some work, but some seem more for show. Like the bagel slicer, or the condiment gun come to mind whenever I think "Who would this really benefit?" I'm always glad to see Dan bring up the criticism and what changes would be needed to make them more aiding. The whole left hand test being a test with oil or slippery hands helps show off some major issues, and it's always good to see someone try something other than constant control tests. I can't wait for the next vid, and see what gadgets really help, and what don't.
Bagel slicers in general (NOT this particular model) came about in the 90s when bagels became a popular coffee shop food and coffee shop employees kept slicing their hands open using regular knives. There are much better, less goofy looking models that get the job done safely.
I feel like for the time comparison he should do a run after he has figured out how the gadget works. Sometimes it seems like it takes long because he's just fumbling with it for the first time
I think you might be wrong about the egg shell cracker, I would have put rubber on the handles to give you better grip and be more comfortable to hold. also it would be really good for people with unsteady hands which it looks like it was designed for.
I love this series. One of the things Dan has really shown is just how much plastic garbage is manufactured. Look at all the plastic in these defective products. And not one single manufacturer will be held responsible.
he tested one of the guillotine style once, he had a problem with the slicer not fitting NY sized bagels. So i believe the advantage in this one is the bigger tolerance with size
I have one of these fruit juicers from the 1950s So mine is all metal. No plastic. The Great thing about these Is that it will actually juice pomegranates. If you're juicing citrus, the cut side of the citrus should be facing down and towards the handle. If you position it that way you can do a half fruit without quartering it.
Couple thoughts: 1) Better, simpler bagel slicers have been around for decades. 2) I have one of those fruit juicers. It has about 10% better yield than the hand reamer. Wish it was easy to get replacement inserts.
@@JD_Wilcox I do, but only for cheesemaking, sausage making, cider and beer brewing, and a couple other things. If you do any of those you need specialized tools. There's just no reasonable way around it.
@@JD_Wilcox The only bagel slicing gadget I've seen with a smaller footprint is the guillotine thing, which often smashes the hell out of the bagel before cutting through it if the bagel is fresh, though the blade works just fine on store-bought ones. I don't know if the slicer tested in the video would be in different.
@@daltigoth3970 Hmm. That's not the definition I've been given by, among others, Alton Brown's spokescritter in an email. It was in response to a statement that "The only unitasker we allow in our kitchens are fire extinguishers." I mentioned that I couldn't make cheese or beer without a number of others, and the allowed as how yes, those were clearly exceptions to the rule. But that's a minor semantic thing. Point is, that there are some special-purpose tools which only do one thing but which no more general purpose tool can do; some of them are big and clunky. A bagel slicer just doesn't rise to that level of irreplaceability since a bread knife does the trick very well if you follow basic safety procedures.
To be fair in the first one he included the time it took trying to separate the egg before scrambling it versus the fork method, not that it mattered but still.
4/5 was super generous regardless of how long it actually took to scramble the egg. I wouldn't have ignored the failure to separate the egg, and it would have ended up with a 2/5 at best.
I have a similar juicer, but an old fashion one made of heavy metal ( insert too is metal too, so it doesn't budge unless you intentionally lift it out ). It's marvelous. Also the handle on mine operates with a squeeze motion rather than a push down for the actual juicing. Had a juice off with a friend who was pro hand juicer and not only was mine faster, I was able to get a greater yield and even more juice from their discards. Definitely converted my friend. I now have chronic hand pain and still find it less painful to use than a hand juicer.
I love that they even changed his name card at the end. And the hostage look after eggcellent. But it's also refreshing to see a Dan smile in the beginning there (and The Fashion).
I rly like how they always have control tests and usability tests because it shows how adapted the products are for people with low dexterity and even disabled people!
I've seen the batter dispenser used for Takoyaki/street foods, very efficient when handling a big batch and when time is very important. Guess they could've just ditched the mixing part lol
I think whoever designed the waffle batter dispenser designed it so the milk would go in first because if the flour goes in first your more likely to have unmixed batter at the bottom even if you use a traditional whisk that's why in my line of work we add the milk first then the waffle mix then eggs
Egg shell cracker seems really good for someone who may not have use of both of their hands. Most times cracking eggs is a two handed job so I bet that would be handy to have for some

I wonder which device is more effective: The bagel slicer or the bagel gluittine. Also, all those egg separators out there, I think the fish is the most effective for separation of the yolks and whites.
When l was a child we had a chromed crocodile nut cracker that was a thing of both wonder and terror. As a small child, there was always some trepidation and doubt, to whether it would be fingers or nuts being cracked. Was super excited to find one for sale a few decades back as, if you managed to keep fingers from being crushed in its tail, its mouth did a great job with the nuts.
I easily see a use for the egg shell cracker. People with arthritis, tendinitis, stroke victims, it’s great for people whose dexterity and hand strength has been compromised in some way.
I love hearing him talk about why a thing is or is not fit for the intended purpose. And… nooo, don't crack the egg on the rim of a bowl, crack it on a flat surface!
I like how the eggshell cracker is a 3/5 because you really don't need it even though you crack eggs every other day, and the bagel slicer, which is super niche, is 4/5.

Oh. My mom bought something pretty much just like the manual fruit juicer probably in the early 70s. I remember it from when I was a kid. It was just like that except no plastic and it wasn't rose gold.
These videos are very good, and you have caught my interest. I like designing things, and so maybe it fits my interest more, not sure, but it is very interesting! And I love Dan, he's a cool guy.
I have one of those egg seperator agitator gadgets. it is NOT egg shaped and is not plagued by the issues Dan experienced. the agitator is actually a cute little chick and the seperator works well. (im bad at seperating eggs). Admittedly I never actually use it to scramble eggs as a bowl and fork is easier to clean in the dishwasher.
Thank you so much for your efforts and for doing this Video. I watch it every single week and I bought one of your gadgets that you showed on it and it was brilliant. I watch it because I’m visually impaired and if Dan can use it with his left hand oily test then I know I can definitely use it.
I don’t have a mixing one, but I do like my batter dispenser since I can make one batch of pancake batter and easily put the remainder into the fridge over the next few days

On the first one, the agitator ball should probably be a color other than yellow too, just so it's easier to see.
Also it’s kinda gross to reach into your egg maybe a flexible rubber attachment with a bulb on the end (like a drip) attached to the top

for me two important things are missing in the tests:
1) ease of cleaning.
2) storage space they occupy in relation to how usable it is.

Liquids first whenever you go into an agitator style mixer helps tremendously.
I doubt Dan bakes. Almost all the recipes have you add dry ingredients to wet ingredients.

Super agree. We love disabled consideration. He's designed kitchen gadgets for disabilities himself, so that makes sense. Also a degree in ergonomics.

i feel like people often forget that majority of these gadgets, thought they might seem stupid and pointless to us, actually help out alot of people with disabilities.

Oh. My mom bought something pretty much just like the manual fruit juicer probably in the early 70s. I remember it from when I was a kid. It was just like that except no plastic and it wasn't rose gold.

I was surprised too. But of you look really closely, I think you can see that he didn't actually scramble it, he just shook it like twice

I have one of those egg seperator agitator gadgets. it is NOT egg shaped and is not plagued by the issues Dan experienced. the agitator is actually a cute little chick and the seperator works well. (im bad at seperating eggs). Admittedly I never actually use it to scramble eggs as a bowl and fork is easier to clean in the dishwasher.
I love how he signed off as Dan Mimosa and they even credited him as such 😂
Thank you so much for your efforts and for doing this Video. I watch it every single week and I bought one of your gadgets that you showed on it and it was brilliant. I watch it because I’m visually impaired and if Dan can use it with his left hand oily test then I know I can definitely use it.
i have the fruit juicer but it is promoted olny to squeeze pomegranate slices, and work well
Things like the egg shell cracker are great for disabled ppl (like me)
I don’t have a mixing one, but I do like my batter dispenser since I can make one batch of pancake batter and easily put the remainder into the fridge over the next few days
The egg scrambler is the epitome of a solution without a problem.
FYI. It's better to crack eggs on a flat surface then on a rim of a bowl. Rim of the bowl can actually force shell into the egg.
