    I have been storing things for years, even when I lived alone. My husband thought I was INSANE, until Hurricane Harvey and now even more so. We have friends who are medically unable to work and get out, so I try to help them now and again.

    Yea! She’s back! Welcome back Kimmy! My husband and I got our tax return yesterday. Every year we take 1/3 of it and go to Bjs (it’s like sams or Costco) and stock up on things to help us for the next 6 months. It really helps! Thank you for showing us things to grab!

      That’s a great idea! I took a lot of my stimulus money since the pandemic and would stock up at Aldi every now and then. $200 there will get you quite a bit.

    I started off with $5/week and I would replace or even rebuy something if that particular week had something listed we don't eat. I am finally getting a stash at home and feel more comfortable in being able to stay home if needed (snowstorm) and not have to worry about feeding us. The only thing I don't have because I have no room presently are the big buckets of flour or sugar. I'm working on it. My husband and I are on a fixed income so if we can do this, so can anyone. Have missed you Kimmie. Was starting to worry!

    One thing I’ve learned this year is that I overstocked-my short term storage. I thought we ate a lot more than we actually do. I’m cooking a lot right now and freezing meals to use things up before they expire. I think I should have maybe put some of that money into long term instead. So it’s important to see what u actually can use. I didn’t realize how many times a week that we got 2 meals out of a planned recipe. I’ve cut back on planning 7 meals a week cuz a pot of soup, or chili etc seems to be going further than I realized. That’s a savings on the food budget right there.

      A LOT of things have "best by" and "use by" dates, not expiration dates. They will last longer than the date unless they are liquid dairy, fresh meat, or dairy. It's great to have freezer meals, but don't stress yourself out trying to cook your older items in the stockpile to beat a date on the package. The "best by" and "use by" dates are about peak flavor or texture. You still have time to use them as long as the package isn't compromised.

    • @toni3470
      @toni3470 2 роки тому

      I often use things years past the date on the package. No flavor difference. I look for signs of spoilage (bubbled or bent package, bugs, etc.) Mom raised me that flour goes in the freezer for 48 hours so those microscopic bugs are killed. (She was born on a farm that bought flour & sugar once yearly, by the barrel, to feed the multigenerational family.) Works for pastas & corn meal, too.

    I LOVE WINCO!! Check out their loose bulk items! For example, instead of buying onion soup mix in the packets in the box, I buy it by the pound and add a tablespoon or two to my meatloaf, burgers, etc.

    A friend of mine plans the meals in his house on a 2-month rotation basis, he then looks in his fridge/freezer and pantry as to what he has, what’s going out of date so needs to be used, but also what’s in his garden as he grows his fruit and veg. And amends the meal plan accordingly. That way when he goes shopping he only buys what he needs for those 2 months. He has found that over a year it has saved him at least £800 if not more, he has now been doing this since he decided to be a stay at home dad 5 year’s ago.

    I've found most markets have their weekly adds available on line. I only have 1 market available where I live. So when I know I'm going to the nearest cities I shop the adds and plan my trips that way. Monday I lucked out and was able to get 4lb bags of cut up frozen boneless skinless chicken breast pieces for $4.99 each. But it was only at that 1 store. The best by date was 2-16-22 what a steal.

    We don’t have lot sales where I live. But I DO love how you look all around your community & took pictures of prices. So smart! I have been *trying* to get my ideas organized & I have used my GoodNotes on my phone to jot down prices when I don’t have paper, and have also taken a few photos of prices-this is my first time in 22 years of “housewifing” that I have had to actually pay attention to the prices because they change so fast! I used to have them memorized for staples & could easily see if a sale was worth it. I also get online & check store ads for places nearby that I don’t get ads for. This is really helpful for me, too! Thanks for all of your great videos! 💜

    We have been seeing the prices go up here in SE Oklahoma. I started years ago at stock piling items I use a lot of. We don't have many grocery stores to shop at but when I do see things on sale I buy several. I like to go to Aldi's to get canned goods. We will also go to Sam's from time to time. The meat prices here have gone up so much, that I have to watch to see what's on sale and put some in the freezer. Last spring my husband caught some wild pigs. We kept two female piglets and fed them all year until Dec when he butchered them. My freezer is full of pork now. One of my favorite recipes is using 2 cans of cream of chicken soup and an envelope of dry Hidden Valley dressing mix. I mix them together in the crockpot and add boneless pork chops to it. Cook on low for 4-6 hrs. It makes a nice gravy, so I tend to double the soup to 4 cans and 2 envelopes of dressing mix and then serve it over rice. My son loves the gravy it makes.

    Yay, Kimmy you are back. Ty so much for your advice and tips you give. Oh and the recipes. I live in a rural area of southwest Louisiana and when I go to Sam's I always buy in bulk for three months, hate driving all the way into town to get to Sam's. But, I now a member of Costco so I will go to Lafayette, LA and got to both Sam's and Costco. One thing I know for sure is to buy for six months not only for myself but my three cats. This will happen once I get into bigger house, no room in this tiny house. Again ty and God bless you and your family.
