And another great instalment about this car. It’s turning into a really big project, and a very interesting one too! I’m really enjoying watching it: thanks a lot!
When the car came to us the gearbox was empty so we filled it up on the last video & road tested, and then we have done a gearbox service so its had a full flush in theory having had 2 oil changes.
Scary how an amateur has handled this engine in the past. Who the hell doesn't change the gasket when taking the rocker cover off? And the oil in both the gearbox and diff. Just unbelievable! I'm glad this car is now in your hands. Oh by the way, you forgot to mention about checking the oil filter for particles in the vid, you just binned in lol.
I'm after some unbiased advise. In the manual of a c220 couoe it states the recommended oil for it is 228.51 . But everyone selling oil is telling me 229.51. Why ???
Mandatory top end rebuild, fuel injectors serviced more than spark plugs, multiple places where the block is bonded together with sealant that can likely all leak, headbolts snapping off at the heads on the early ones (hopefully all have been sorted by now)..... Give me an M113/133k ALL day! M156 is still a wonderful thing, just a very scary thing hahaha
What, if any, can help the cams live longer? More oil changes, easier driving, etc...? Nothing is more cringy than seeing dirty engines on YT, and the tech appearing oblivious to it.
Regular oil changes I would recommend every4k And regular driving as mad as that sounds, I don’t think these m156 like to be sat still al the oil drains off the cams and buckets. I might do a m156 buyers guide
I would like to see all of your team wearing eye protection while working underneath vehicles on the ramp. It’s basic common sense and will prevent any objects going into your eyes. You can get over glasses protection.
Why can’t Mercedes improve the materials used for the camshafts and improve the oil flow? Mercedes is supposed to be a quality motor manufacturer but in view of the faults that you are finding it looks like they need to improve a number of areas in their production. They are not alone as per Range Rover engine failures.
Now I know why Matt always has gearbox service done. Top job guys.

Just done my transmission service no magnet or overflow filler pipe . You could send me the spare if you like😅
Nathan’s 🔥
are these as reliable as the old v8 like the m113?
unfortunately they are not, nothing will ever be as reliable as the m113, best v8 MB built.

Horrible music
Plastic valve covers... Abandoning quality and long life. Shame on Mercedes
Diff and trans fluids were horrible..
